Leon glanced over at the profile of the young man beside him, the bruises and scars he had endured the passing months changed him, beneath it all the man could see the same kid that was put under his care that handful of months ago but it was slowly fading due to the cruelness in the world. They wouldn't speak, that was how most nights went after a beat down - after they had their asses handed to them and the bad guys got away. It wasn't often but it was often enough that Leon had grown to know the routine and the familiar silence all too well when it finally came around.

The taste of the beer was bitter on the telepath's tongue and he made a mental note of it, only hearing silence on Andrew's end even though he hoped it would have issued a snort or even a smile from the young man. But still nothing. He was going in deep and Leon could hear it, picking apart where they had gone wrong and why they weren't able to win this time or the next. About her. That vile woman who seemed to only ooze madness and anger and made it hard to believe that Andrew ever saw the good in her.

The clock chimed and through the silent night there was a distant crackle of fireworks, ringing in the new year. Getting to his feet with a sigh, Leon made a promise to himself (and to Andrew) in his mind - that this year would be their year, that they were going to come out on top. And as he moved, the older of the two leaned down to press a silent kiss to the cheek of the other, his beer in his hand as he hunched over the back of the couch; he made his final promise that he was going to do everything in his ability to make sure Andrew came out of it all ready for anything.
