Heather Runs 12 Ultra marathons To Support Royal Marines Charity

Heather is running twelve Ultra Marathons this year to support the Royal Marines Charity. An ultramarathon is any race longer than a marathon, and Heather is running one a month.

Heather came to North Devon last weekend and members of the North Devon Branch Royal marines Association supported her on a run from The Royal Hotel, Bideford where the Combined Operations Executive made some of their plans for D day, along the Tarka Trail, past the Royal Marine Base at Instow, onwards to RMB Chivenor and out to Braunton Burrows. She completed the return leg to Bideford, in all clocking up around 36 miles in 7.5 hours.

She is doing these in various different locations across the country, each with a link to the Royal Marines. She has the full support of her team, the Royal Marines Charity and John Peel, Chairman, Royal Marines Association, North Devon Branch, pictured.

Why is she doing this? Heather said, “I am an ordinary person, I don’t have a ‘story’, I simply believe with a deep passion in everything the RMA-The Royal Marines Charity do.”

Ultra running is not just about physical capability but mostly about mental battles, determination, humility, adaptability, respect and overcoming. The runs will not be fast, may involve lots of walking, but I am bloody minded enough to finish!”

The Royal Marines Charity said: “This Charity is uniquely placed to understand, respond and react to the needs of Royal Marines and their families, helping them to overcome their own challenges, including life changing injury, life limiting illness and mental ill-health sustained on operations all over the globe. As an example, the increasing mental health support requirements of our Royal Marines veteran community resulting from the Falklands War, the Iraq War and Afghanistan is particularly stark in 2019 alone, twelve Royal Marines veterans committed suicide, an alarming and very sad increase.”

“The Charity responded in 2020 by running a ground-breaking campaign known as #Lifting the Lid, a reference to Royal Marines taking off their Green Berets and opening-up about their experiences and the stress of conflict.”

“This programme of support was praised by the NHS, Samaritans and Zero Suicide Alliance. But even with these initiatives, it is still not enough to prevent Royal Marines from taking their own lives. More support is needed, but the pandemic has had a profound impact on fundraising just as demand in these difficult times has grown. The Charity continues to campaign and raise funds, but it needs the help of every Royal Marine and every supporter of the Royal Marines Commandos.”

MP Geoffrey Cox addresses environmental concerns ​ over XLinks convertor station at Huxhill, North Devon

Public meeting to hear Geoffrey Cox' MP's response to local concerns at Alverdiscott and Huntshaw Community hall. Friday December 9th 2022. The proposal is from a company called XLinks who want to run a cable relaying solar generated energy from Morocco to the UK, but making landfall at Cornborough, North Devon, instead of Hinckley, which is the preferred location.

This will cause major disruption for years to come in the village of Alverdiscott and further afield. Major concerns were aired at the meeting regarding consultation time, re-location of the 50 acre site when there's already a substation with better national grid links nearby, and more.

Geoffrey Cox said that he would be holding the company to account as well as hosting a proper presentation of the project himself in the same village hall.

He also quoted an attendee who said, "If you were going advise somebody how to slide a planning application of this size in quickly in under the radar, this is how you'd do it."
