When he acted mentally ill – when he turned up late, when he forgot things, when his mood swerved suddenly and severely into sadness or anger, when he rambled for five uninterrupted minutes about the new series of Space Sentinel without noticing that nobody was interested – he made people uncomfortable.

No Major Glitches, Chapter 3

I didn't sit down and think I wanted to write a story ""about"" mental health when I started writing NMG - and to be honest I don't like describing it that way. It makes it sound dry, like you should read it because it's good for you and not because you like the writing, or the characters, or just generally think a rivals romance about speedrunners sounds funny. But I also can't deny that it... is about that. I wouldn't call them "good rep" because they're both terrible role models, especially Rory, but since they both experience Mental Health Shit as often as I do - albeit in very different ways - it undeniably becomes a part of how they experience the world, and how they narrate those experiences. And Rory's frustrations with how he's perceived as "a role model" echoes some of my own frustrations with being "open about mental health, but not in a way that makes people uncomfortable" while having a semi-professional creative presence in public.
