One of the key factors contributing to the rapid growth of this sector is the growing awareness of the benefits of combining technology with education among educators and students alike. This leads to an increase in the demand for such a model, which gradually has led to a dramatic increase in the number of startups in this space that are backed by venture capitalists and investors that wish to disrupt traditional education models and make the process of learning more effective. Byju’s, Unacademy, upGrad, Vedantu, and more quickly emerged and took the centre stage as market leaders.  
There are well over 5000 EdTech startups in India that utilize IT tools for inclusive learning, assisting over 300 million students to receive a top-notch education in today’s age, and bridging the gap between the rural and urban. According to reports, over the past five years, the industry has received an investment of around $4 billion, and it is projected to grow even further, with an estimated expansion of $30 billion in the next decade. SWAYAM PRABHA: A collection of 34 DTH channels that were inaugurated in 2017 that broadcast educational content around the clock. The channels broadcast new material at different times of the day to allow students to choose a convenient time to watch.
E-Pathshala: A government-introduced portal in 2015, as a resource hub for instructional materials such as flipbooks, audiobooks, films, etc. available in Indian languages like Hindi, English, and Urdu that can be accessed through mobile devices like smartphones, laptops, desktop computers, and tablets.
NISHTHA: A National Initiative for School Heads and Teachers’ Holistic Advancement (NISHTHA) program which was launched in 2021 to create modules for online education at the secondary level. According to the Union Budget 2021-2022, 5.6 million teachers were trained through this program in FY22. 
National Education Policy 2020: It emphasizes the use of technology and digitization to advance education, particularly in rural regions. This will help bring high-quality education to all regions of the nation, particularly Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, and villages.
National Digital Educational Architecture (NDEAR): was established by the government in the Union Budget 2021-2022 to develop digital infrastructure and support educational planning initiatives. It seeks to provide a unique educational ecosystem architecture to progress the nation's digital infrastructure and ensure the autonomy of all stakeholders, particularly states and UTs.
The National Knowledge Network (NKN): is a government-initiated program designed to connect all knowledge-creating organizations, including institutions such as IITs, IIMs, universities, research labs, and e-governance institutions, up to the district level. His professional journey has been fascinating and enriching. With over 12+ years of experience in tech and he has immense domain knowledge of the Telecom, healthcare, and eCommerce industry. After ensuring Chinna is well settled in his new role, our team recently reached out to him and invited him to provide some insight into his experience working with GTX and understand the tech scenario in India from the perspective of someone who’s been doing this for a long time. 
Here’s what he had to say.
Could you give us a brief about yourself and your professional journey?
I’ve been in the IT industry for about 12 years now and also have some experience in sales. Previously, I worked with Tech Mahindra for about 8years as a project lead. After that, I moved to CriticalRiver INC. as the technical lead of testing. Now, I’m working as a Software Quality Assurance Lead in Celigo- a role that I got with the help of the GTX team.
With the experience you possess, the decision for changing a job is usually highly motivated by a strong driving factor. What was yours? 
There are actually a lot of things I consider before moving on from a company. I think the major considerations, that everyone looks at, is a chance to advance one’s career, receive better pay, and upskill oneself according to the changing market requirements and conditions. 
When I felt I needed a change, this is what I kept in mind while looking out for the proper opportunities.
What progress do you seek professionally in this role? What do you hope to gain from it?
My expectations have been different from each role that I have taken up in my career. Of course, the responsibilities I have are important, but it’s crucial for me to be given a chance to upgrade my skills in a big way. I want to be exposed to new technologies, tools, and features that are entering the markets and be in touch with the advancements we see around us. 
To put it very simply, I wish to grow significantly personally and professionally in this role.
Before landing this lucrative opportunity with Celigo, how long were you on the lookout for a change? 
It’s actually very interesting. When I decided to look out for a change, I merely updated my Linkedin profile to “open to work”. I did not upload my resume or details on any other job platforms. Within just two weeks of doing so, I was contacted by a recruiting consultant from GTX. It was commendable; not only does GTX provide Celigo with all the details about a candidate like me, but they ensure that each candidate is given a whole world of information about the company we are applying to. 
The POC (Prashanth from GTX) provided me a detailed scenario of what I can expect if I am selected with Celigo, and now that I have joined-it’s exactly what I was told.   With your experience, you probably would have a range of opportunities to choose from. What made you go with Celigo- what stood out? 
To be honest, I had 2-3 more offers in front of me while I was in talks with Celigo. However, I wanted product experience in my profile and wanted to build my skillset in that domain. Celigo stood out to me from every angle. I was very impressed by what they were providing and I noticed a lot of growth potential for each employee. 
They also keep in mind that work-life balance is important for people. All of this together made me opt for Celigo as the next step in my career.
How was your experience with the GTX team, from start to finish?
I think it’s incredible how proactive GTX is- I was barely searching for a job for two weeks before they contacted me. From the very first call, I felt well-informed about Celigo and was given the details about the company, what they are looking for, the job requirements, and more. The POC explained to me in detail about the opportunity and patiently took up any questions that I had. 
Sometimes recruiters evade questions like the pay and benefits, but with GTX that was made crystal clear from the start. Your team scheduled meetings with Celigo promptly and everything was done on schedule. 
I do recall that there was a slight delay from Celigo’s end due to a snag in the recruitment process (all of which was clarified later) but during that time too, GTX acted as a firm bridge in between, keeping me motivated and interested. This prevented any loss of interest, fallouts, or miscommunication. 
Even after I got the offer letter from Celigo, GTX regularly got in touch with me to check my comfort level and how I am doing. The process had a lot of clarity and transparency.
You’ve been in this industry for a while now, and you hadn’t heard of Celigo- yet found a wonderful opportunity with them. Do you think with the developments taking place in India- especially in Tech and IT, such impressive opportunities have sprouted throughout the nation at a very rapid pace? 
Yes. I hadn’t heard of Celigo specifically but was well aware of the industry they’re in and the problems they work upon. I think in the last few years, several startups have sprouted throughout the country, which is why we’re witnessing a growth in the impressive tech opportunities for professionals. 
Another thing that has changed in India is the increase in work flexibility- like Work-from-home options.
Would you care to comment on India’s role in emerging tech in the global scenario?
We’ve always considered the West as being more tech-forward and progressive. However, now India is stepping up big time. I have had experience working with Europe as well, and I’ve noticed that they are extremely rigid about their timings. In India, there is a lot of discipline. People go out of their way to get their work done and productivity is very high here. India is playing a big role in the emerging tech domain and working on solving some crucial problems.

It is estimated that by 2050 at least two-thirds of the global population will live in urban areas. The rise in urbanization also brings challenges in its wake – as the city population increases, it will become imperative to not only meet their demands and needs but also ensure the protection of the environment in doing so. It is known that cities are the major polluters – responsible for about three-quarters of global greenhouse gas emissions. Climate change today is one of the most prominent issues we face, and it is exigent that these emissions are drastically reduced if the planet is to be protected from increased and longer heat waves, global warming, and natural calamities. The Smart Cities Mission is led by the Indian Government with the aim to raise the quality of life in cities, using information and digital technology and adopting the best global practices, with collaboration between the public and private sectors/players.
The Smart City Mission was launched in 2015 on June 25 by PM Narendra Modi, with the responsibility to implement the mission resting with the Union Ministry of Urban Development. Additionally, each state has created a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) that manages the mission at a state level. A total of Rs. 720,000 crores has been sanctioned for this mission, covering 100 cities across the country that are earmarked to be upgraded as per the guidelines of the plan.
Here’s what this ambitious project aims to achieve.
Keeping environmental safeguards in place, the states would have the leeway to use the land for varied purposes and put by-laws in place to support the changes
The aim would be to ensure that everyone has access to housing opportunities – smart cities would thus need several more housing projects that would cater to both upper and middle-income groups
Enhancing security, reducing pollution and road congestion, and promoting the local economy are all part of the larger vision of smart cities. This would also include ensuring walkways for pedestrians and ride paths for cyclists. Further, additional options for public transportation would also be considered.
Recreational facilities such as parks, gyms, and playgrounds with swings and greenery are also part of the smart city enhanced quality of life
Transparency and accountability from government bodies is expected and desired, which means that online services and easy accessibility of services by the public, without the need to make physical trips to such offices
Schemes Complementing the Smart City Mission

In the light of making this mission a success, the government has linked it to several other projects it has initiated. The aim is to ensure cumulative and sustained institutional, social, physical, and economic infrastructure. Some of the schemes interlinked with the Smart City Mission are: AMRUT- Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, HRIDAY- Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana, Make in India, Digital India, Swach Bharat Abhiyan, and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

Structure of Technology for the Smart Cities

A variety of user interfaces, software, networks for communication, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are used to deliver structured solutions to the public, within smart cities. IoT is the most imperative – it is a ‘web’ of connected devices that communicate and share data – such as on-street sensors or smart homes. Data from these devices are sent to the ‘Cloud’ or on super-sensitive and secure servers. This data serves as ‘fuel’ for improvements and upgrades that would enhance the efficiency of both public and private sectors while delivering economic and social benefits to the citizens and enhancing the quality of their daily lives. Additionally, IoT-based systems enhance security systems and prevent unauthorized access to stored data.  
There is heavy reliance on technology in smart cities to form the infrastructure: 1. Digital 
This infrastructure is service-oriented and connects individuals to devices and includes services such as innovation and communication infrastructure.  
2. Intelligent 
Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning are ‘trained’ to read the data generated by inter-connected devices and then identify patterns. Based on interactions of humans with their surroundings, the success in terms of impact and efficacy of policy decisions can be determined.
3. Wired 
Hardware/physical components of IT systems are equally critical to the sustained development of smart cities. The wired infrastructure supports IoT and wireless technologies, providing general access to consistently updated physical and digital infrastructure. This in turn will support productivity and human capital. 
4. Ubiquitous 
A U-city or ubiquitous city is the extension of the concept of a digital city from the perspective of accessibility to public services from any connected device.  
5. Hybrid 
A hybrid city combines a real-world conurbation with an online community that is connected to a real-world location. These spaces can serve to realize state projects of the future for the services and integration of a smart city. 
6. Information City 
The many interactive devices in smart cities generate huge amounts of data and based on the storage and interpretation of this data, the growth, and security of Smart cities can be measured.

The main aim of the Smart Cities Mission irrefutably is to boost the standard of living of citizens and significantly enhance the economic growth of the country. Since 2015, several positive changes are visible in the ‘chosen’ cities.  
There is no denying that India has a long way to go to catch up to some of its international counterparts; but we’re getting there at a good pace. If there’s anything lacking that could elevate and speed up efforts, it would the quality and quantity of readily available tech talent in our country.  
All in all, the Smart Cities Mission is underway and seems poised for success.

The 25th edition of India’s flagship event and Asia’s most prestigious tech summit, the Bengaluru Tech Summit, was held from the 16th-18th of November 2022 at Bangalore Place. Global Talent Exchange participated in the Startup Program of the event.

The theme of the 3-day event was #Tech4NextGen, a topic that has been gaining prominence and becoming increasingly relevant with India’s massive progress in the emerging tech domain.
BTS sought to bring together over 350 industry leaders from around the world, research think tanks, academics as well as policymakers to engage in discussion and explore the opportunities that lie before us and the vision as well as the path we must take to help the country achieve its goals at the earliest. Innovation is rampant and it’s essential to now put collaborative efforts on a pedestal.
Some of the important focus areas of the event included mRNA, Life sciences, MedTech, Vaccine Equity, Agriculture, Cellular immunotherapies, biotechnology, Biotech, and much more. This was also intended to serve as a platform to celebrate the different startups that are working on resolving problems that face humanity at large and are driving change with the use of technology.
In addition, the Bengaluru Tech Summit, with over 575 exhibitors, has often been regarded as a wonderful event for people to network, make strong connections, ignite partnerships and increase their awareness about the latest trends in this amazing industry.

The event was kicked off on a high note with a virtual inaugural address by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A key message of his speech was that India has been revolutionized in several ways- it is now no longer known for red tape, but the country has laid out a “red carpet” for investors. Bengaluru is now the 5th city in the world that garners and attracts the most venture capital investments, due to the large number of immersive tech firms that the area has given birth to.
“From reforming the foreign direct investment to offering the ease of doing business and increasing the production incentive schemes in various sectors, India’s excellent factors can bridge your investment and our innovation.”  
PM Modi also extensively talked about using innovation for global good and mentioned that our country is using it as a weapon to defeat poverty. Technology is highly regarded as an exclusive domain- available only to the cream of the crop or the privileged few in society. However, India has attempted- and largely succeeded- to democratize tech in order to reach the furthest corners of our diverse society.

Hon’ble Chief Minister Of Karnataka, Shri Basavaraj Bommai, was also present at the event. During his address, he announced that Karnataka would be developing six new “high-tech” cities as well as a startup park. He declared that the state would now turn its focus toward setting up top-notch universities and research centers, as part of their contribution toward supporting and boosting India’s tech industry.
CM Bommai also highlighted the importance of sustainable innovation- resources are dwindling, and the brilliant minds of society must get together to formulate solutions to save the planet- “Global thinking” is what he called it.

A major highlight of the event was the insightful sessions and panel discussions.
Prof. Ajay K Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India, talked about the  Convergence of Technological Revolution for advancing India's growth trajectory. There was also an interesting dialogue on India’s power in the emerging tech, which covered key elements like the Indian opportunity to utilize AI for good, how the “make in India” program can benefit the world, as well as data science as a significant lever that is driving semiconductor innovation in the country for a better future.
BTS left no stone unturned to take up every new-gen technology and explore its potential to the fullest.
There were also a few sessions that took up the strategic relationship between India and the U.S. with regard to the critical and emerging tech domains- cyber, artificial intelligence, quantum, 5G, 6G, space hardware, biotech, and more. These two scientifically rich communities must collaborate to build up the global science and tech ecosystem, and strengthen national ties in the process.

Internet of Things (IoT) 
This technology helps to reduce dependence on the physical monitoring of crop fields. IoT devices assimilate and deliver exact real-time information through mobile apps or other means. IoT also assists with tasks such as soil fertility, temperature and humidity detection, tracking plants and livestock, and much more.
Robotics

AI helps with predictive insights on the subjects of crop output, weather conditions, price predictions, and more – supporting farmers to make informed and speedy decisions. This real-time information supports proactivity and prevents losses. Chatbots deliver tips and information to farmers.  AI and Machine learning help livestock farmers to detect diseases and anomalies in cattle and plants, enabling swift corrective action. ML algorithms help make suggestions on gene selection too.
Big Data and Analytics 
This technology enables the easy examination of farm data, which can then help to convert it into information that can be used to advantage. The data on crop production, area, projections, irrigation, land usage, agriculture prices, weather predictions, crop disease information, and more help lay the foundation for the next season.
Drone Technology 
Drones with cameras are super-effective in cutting costs for farmers through the images they can capture in a short time, even for very large farm expanses. They can also assist with geofencing to prevent the loss of livestock, help with monitoring grazing and wandering cattle activities, and a lot more – all through GPS-enabled technology. The ability of drones to hover allows them to collect real-time and comprehensive data and images with regard to crop and soil conditions.
Blockchain 
The core attribute of blockchain is the ability to store records while keeping them tamper-free. This is very useful to address issues in the current food system – food fraud, proper supply chain, food traceability, and inefficiencies. Blockchain is decentralized – this strength ensures the proper validation of processes and products, leading to greater transparency in the market.
Blockchain technology enabled by sensors supports the safe and guaranteed tracing of animal products ‘farm to table’. This activity is critical in monitoring disease outbreaks, thereby preventing pandemics and aligned economic losses. Sensors help to monitor milk quality, pregnancy hormones, and the overall health of the cattle. 
Additionally, sensors allow cattle to roam freely, without the boundaries of fences – sensors act as virtual fences. In addition to this technology, robotics has also found favour, since it helps to address the critical labour shortage issue on livestock farms. Currently, about 12% of all dairy farms have ‘employed’ robots, and this usage is expected to reach about 20% in five years hence.
Finally… 
As India continues to grow, with internet penetration even in rural areas, given that they are the engine of growth, adapting to changes seems doable.  
India is poised and well-positioned to manage evolutionary agricultural techniques, enabling farmers to move towards innovation and better business models, all supported by Agritech.  
If the country is lacking anywhere, it’s in the quality and quantity of top-notch talent in the form of expert engineering and IT professionals who can lead the revolution that is underway.

Mr. Phani Nandula is currently working as a Staff Engineer- Data Science and Machine Learning at Micron Technology.
He has an impressive professional journey, with over 14+ years of experience, and has led several machine learning projects in the areas of Natural Language Processing, Time-Series data, and computer vision to solve challenging problems in Pharma, Automotive, and Manufacturing domains.
He is also experienced in identifying key customer requirements, proposing machine-learning-based techniques, validating concepts, and deploying solutions. He has 7 patents issued across machine learning, additive manufacturing, the power industry, and the aviation domain.
Our team was interested in getting to know him better, understanding his path, and getting feedback on his experience working with GTX.

Could you give us a brief about yourself and your professional journey?
Starting from the top, I got my bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and then did my master’s from IIT in applied mechanics. Soon after, I joined GE Aviation in Bangalore and worked there for 3 years. I moved to the GE Global Research Centre after that and worked there for about 6 years.
I then joined Siemens and was working in machine learning for gas turbines and power generation for 3 years. Moved on to Bosch as a solutions architect within the pharmaceutical and automotive industry. I have now joined Micron. I have a total of 14+ years of professional experience.
With the experience you possess, the decision for changing a job is usually highly motivated by a strong driving factor. What was yours?
Everyone has aspirations of money and a better position, but for me, that isn’t the priority at all. I am more interested in the problems that I would be able to solve. Whenever I’ve chosen a job, even in the past, I have focused on solving real-world problems be it in pharma, energy, power, etc.
I had no experience in the Semiconductor industry but I wanted to pursue the opportunity with Micron because I was very excited about what I would be working on. The industry is gaining a lot of prominence in India and I feel it would be great for me to learn more here, contribute my experience and knowledge, and be of incredible value. I am purely driven by purpose.
What progress do you seek professionally in this role? What do you hope to gain from it?
I would say I’m still in the process of figuring it out myself. The work is fast-paced in this industry and it presents its own set of challenges, but it is exciting all the same. 
All fields are different, there is certain technical jargon specific to the work and it takes time to pick up on all of it. 
I would say, at this point, I am navigating the Semicon industry and in the explorative phase. I am enjoying the kind of problems I get to solve here- it’s very rewarding.
Before landing the job with Micron, how long were you on the lookout for a change? 
Not much time at all- I’m very fortunate about that. I uploaded my CV in the first week of December and in the last week (around the 26th) I was contacted by the GTX team. They discovered the profile very fast.
With your experience, you probably would have a range of opportunities to choose from. What made you go with Micron- what stood out?
When the recruiter from GTX got in touch, I did not know what Micron was. I started talking to people, read the JD well, researched the company thoroughly, and soon realized that they’re excellent and doing some fantastic work. Since it was not a startup, I felt they would provide me with time and space to learn about the role before delving head-first into the work; this is something I really appreciate. 
In addition to this, I feel that the Semicon industry is coming up rapidly in India and I was intrigued. Although I would say it’s a risk switching to a different field, it’s rewarding and the perfect time to get in on the action.
How was your experience with the GTX team, from start to finish?
It was great. Your team provided me with all the details. I feel in such a role, it’s almost impossible to ask all the questions in one go. I contacted her (GTX recruiter) many times with several queries and she was patient and answered everything. I felt very comfortable with her, even more than I did with the other POC outside of GTX. 
I would say that if I hadn’t gotten the information that I needed, the change would be way more stressful for me. A career decision is a big one and the team helped in every way they could.
Moving forward from your personal experiences…..
Do you think with the developments taking place in India- especially in emerging tech, such impressive opportunities have sprouted throughout the nation at a very rapid pace, but there isn’t a lot of awareness about it?
Definitely, I feel awareness needs to increase. When people are on the lookout for a job change, they mostly rely on Linkedin or word-of-mouth recommendations. People restrict their search within their particular field and look closely at companies similar to the one they’re working in at that point in time- which is what I was doing first as well. 
However, it’s important to explore further. Companies are doing great work in India and you might find the opportunity of a lifetime in the place you least expect it. Organizations should work on elaborating the JDs and platforms like yours can help in this as well- to help people know that the skills and experience they possess are relevant in a newer one as well.
Would you care to comment on India’s role in emerging tech in the global scenario?
The tech boom is one of the best things to happen to the country. The way the startups and unicorns are growing is very impressive. Though work is still heavy toward the services aspect, I can see that products are increasing too. The Indian population is highly educated and talented. The kind of contribution coming from India to the world is amazing and it is only going to grow from here. International businesses are fighting to make their way into India, we are receiving a lot of funding, investments, etc. Times are great.
Coming to the salary... Several Indians were moving out of India to work in the West primarily because of better pay opportunities. Do you think this argument holds true even now?
Indian organizations are paying very well now and salaries have improved massively over time. However, I feel people also choose to move to the West because of the work culture. If India changes by respecting people’s personal time and rewarding hard work, it would be a golden period for the country.

As per a report by Cross Tower and Us-India Strategic Par Partnership Forum, Blockchain and Web 3.0 innovations shall result in a $1.1 Trillion contribution to India’s GDP over the next 11 years.
  Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of Blockchain is that the progress we see to date is just the tip of the iceberg- as adoption increases and policies are rolled out, it shall find multiple use cases across all sectors, especially in a developing country like India.
  Global Talent Exchange organized a virtual roundtable discussion on “Blockchain - The India opportunity to unlock value” as part of our Technology Gamechangers Series. We intended to bring together thought leaders critical to the growth of this disruptive technology within our country to discuss the wide range of opportunities and possibly daunting challenges they see in the way of widescale adoption.
  The session was moderated by Raj Kapoor, Founder of the India Blockchain Alliance, the largest Indian emerging technology tech think tank, and an Advisory Board Member at over 20 blockchain companies including, Floyx, Spherium, and XxTripz. As a global Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, and FinTech educator, he has helped organize India’s biggest Blockchain events across major cities and has spoken at several international seminars and conferences worldwide. The panel consisted of 8 experts from companies that are defining the growth of Blockchain within the country. They engaged with GTX’s Co-Founder Avinash Bichali during the two-hour session to discuss how India is planning its road to a transformed ecology.

All the leaders were enthused about the use cases and opportunities that Blockchain presents. As a panelist pointed out, smart contracts aim to automate contractual processes, bring in efficiency, and enhanced decentralization, which can overcome the problems we face in four categories:
Time of run
Cost of run
Arbitration
Litigation
Most importantly, Blockchain will involve the end user in the processes- a critical aspect that has been missing till now.
  Mr. Kapoor went on to pose an important question before the panel: Will the country’s policies include smart contracts in the near future?
  There were a range of responses- a similar pattern that was noted was that although the policies are expanding and evolving to incorporate this emerging technology, the pace must increase rapidly if India is to establish itself as a major player internationally. The panelists agreed that authentication, agnostic, and payment structures need refreshing, all while cleverly taking account of the challenges that will inevitably come about with an increase in decentralization.

The experts reckon that India is headed in the right direction. Enterprise blockchain is shaping up powerfully, enabling massive investments and working to bridge the trust gap with the users.
  Several leaders felt that it was necessary to stop to identify the use cases so efforts can be focused. While we do lack a regulatory climate as of now, it can be argued that the best minds are working for it. The government must step up as a convenor- to bring consortium partners together- and as an ecosystem developer- by closely coordinating with the state governments and companies.

India’s Blockchain story is unique in itself. The country is planning for a digital currency- which shall be a great initiative, open up doors for the banking and financial sector, and enhance adoption.
A panelist also voiced the need for global action- countries must come together to create a regulatory framework that shall act as a standard for all. The thought leaders agreed upon the urgent need of building up awareness within the community. This can be done via seminars, webinars, and workshops and by incorporating this information at the University level as well.
Organizations must set aside time and resources to train their team about Blockchain and how they shall be expected to use it- and most importantly, why they should use it.
The community must be motivated and a standard for interoperability must be devised via a super-cluster approach that combines tech, users, and academia.

Blockchain has a massive social impact as well- it can help in distributing government subsidies fairly, prevent fraud, improve education, and more.
Moreover, organizations must get together to create a whitepaper with all the challenges, opportunities, ideas, and asks from the government in order to have a focused conversation and differentiate between what the lawmakers can help with and what needs to take its due course.

For any emerging technology, the drivers must have an arsenal of skilled and experienced talent. Unfortunately, India does not have a broad enough talent pool at the moment. The market demand is immense, but the availability is shockingly low. If India wants to scale fast, organizations must look beyond the border to bring in the talent we lack locally.
  All in all, the session effectively covered a broad range of topics- from the use cases to the opportunities and challenges we are presented with. Indeed, Blockchain shall be a major catalyst to revamp the governance processes to build a system that is increasingly efficient and transparent and fairly involves the end users when required as well.

Over the last nine years, it has grown at a CAGR of 9.43%, with its major segments thriving. Generic and bulk drugs, over-the-counter medications, vaccines, contract research and manufacturing, biosimilars, and biologics are some of the top segments of the industry.
  India stands tall and holds a position of authority – with over 3000 drug companies and more than 10,500 manufacturing units, a giant ‘pool’ of talent (scientists and engineers) on track to elevate the industry to greater heights.

Technology in Pharma
Post the Covid19 pandemic, the pharma industry responded by accelerating innovation, technology, and research and development to offer better products at even more competitive rates. The government’s latest Research-linked Incentive Scheme or RLI will benefit the industry from an increase in tax incentives in the R&D realm, enabling these companies to increase their spending on R&D, which would lead to a giant leap in the areas of complex generic drugs, precision drugs, antimicrobials, vaccines, and biosimilars. This has encouraged a rise in technologies such as 3D printing of precision medicine, which is poised to revolutionize medicine in a number of ways. 3D printing also prevents wastage and helps to enhance sustainability.
Errors in manufacturing in the pharmaceutical industry would not only be expensive but also life-threatening to consumers. The FDA has set down rules such as the Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) – which focuses on the design and the stringent monitoring of manufacturing processes and facilities.
Transformation of the digital landscape is critical from the perspective of improving patient care, reducing costs, more efficient manufacturing, and bringing in more transparency. These technologies include artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), machine learning (ML), and additive manufacturing. These technologies enable elevated research and development, faster clinical trials, more creativity and uniqueness in products and services, and increased efficiency in manufacturing while remaining compliant.

The Role of the Government

From the perspective of the government’s role in this realm, there are several aspects that the government can affect. The government must continue to strengthen the regulatory framework, incentivize investment for innovation by pharma companies, and create an ecosystem of collaboration between the industry, academia, and start-ups.
1. Strengthen the Infrastructure for Healthcare By improving healthcare and strengthening the infrastructure, it would be simpler to enhance the usability of the available technologies such as telemedicine, artificial intelligence, healthcare apps, mobile clinics, and others. This would increase access and health coverage for a larger number of people, while also presenting an ocean of opportunities for both the health and pharma industries.
2. Supportive and Robust Regulatory Environment It is imperative for the government to continue ensuring transparency and put together an easy-to-understand and coherent regulatory policy that will eliminate ambiguity and uncertainty with regard to the process of pricing and approval of drugs. It must also refrain from repeatedly making changes and revisions to the policy but rather put together a framework that supports periodical review. This will build trust with the government and remove confusion within the pharma industry.
3. An Independent Pharma Ministry An independent ministry will speed up policy-making and decisions, ramp up the implementation process, expedite investment approvals, and support the continuous elevation of technology within the industry.
4. Focus on API Manufacturing The Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) is the biologically active component of a drug product (tablet, capsule, cream, injectable) that produces the intended effects. By providing infrastructure and regulatory support, the manufacturing of APIs in India can be enhanced, thereby reducing the reliance on these from other countries. Constructing large-scale dedicated zones, increasing pre-approval of environmental clearance, allowing existing facilities to support API manufacturing and a lower cost of borrowing to set up an API plant.
5. Promote and Support Innovation The pharma industry would benefit by reducing the GST on all drugs – maintaining a uniform 5% - rather than just on the life-saving drugs, and competitive tax interventions especially those that support research and development, technology, and technology transfers. A streamlined policy that supports clinical trials for innovative products, better support for technology in established companies, health-tech start-ups, and an increase in investor-friendly business policies. Setting up of anchor educational institutions that support technological and other research and innovation. These institutions would not only initiate research but also be the prime ‘providers’ of skilled talent and collaboration on strategic initiatives.
6. Collaborate with International Regulatory Bodies Such collaboration will help to expand and make a more robust global footprint, while also improving market presence through the exchange of best practices between regulatory bodies of several countries. Innovation and tech-led growth are possible only with support from the government, through regulatory interventions, investments, and consistent nurturing of technology. The current government schemes include an increase in budget by 18.6% over five years, the Ayushman Bharat Yojana (now called the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, which plans to make secondary and tertiary healthcare completely cashless for the underprivileged section of society covering about 50 crore beneficiaries), and others.
The Lack Of Talent
While the pharma industry is currently worth trillions of dollars and has made significant advances in technology, there is still a long way to go. The IoT, artificial intelligence, robots, and sophisticated computers need to evolve even more and faster, and modern manufacturing technologies are still in the loop.
Investment and focus on pharma-tech can exponentially improve efficacy, effectiveness, agility, speed, adaptability, and uniformity in the output and performance of the pharma industry. Technology in the industry will define the next generation of products, while also raising quality, controls, and safety standards, which currently are managed manually!
However, since every process cannot be managed by ‘machines’, a smart combination of human and artificial intelligence is certainly the right choice.

According to the Economic survey of 2021, India’s domestic pharma market is likely to grow by 3X to reach a $130 Billion valuation by 2030. The demand for industry-ready talent has increased massively, and such exponential growth has only made the talent gap that much clearer.The country requires competent professionals such as pharmaceutical managers, engineers, clinical researchers, business analysts, pharmacovigilance experts, etc. to take charge of the revolution that is to come.

A R2I STORY: SADANAND SINGH
Mr. Sadanand Singh is currently working as a Principal Research Scientist. He had moved to San Francisco, USA to pursue his Ph.D., which is where he began his professional journey. 
He has an impressive professional journey, with over 10+ years of experience with deep learning, machine learning, numerical modeling, and scientific computing in production environments. He also has an excellent publication record with 600+ citations in high-profile journals like Nature Materials.
Our team was interested in getting to know him better, understanding his path, and getting feedback on his experience working with GTX.
Read on for a glimpse into Sadanand’s journey.
Could you give us a brief about yourself?
I am currently the principal scientist at Micron India, after making my move back to India from the U.S. with the help of GTX.
I had shifted to the U.S. for my Ph.D., after which I worked at several reputed companies as well as with a couple of start-ups. 
What made you choose the U.S. for pursuing higher education?
India is great for an undergrad degree, however, back in 2008, I felt the opportunities for higher studies were better in the west. I was seeking a high quality of education, which is why I moved. 
How was your experience in the U.S. during your time there?
When you are young, new experiences are definitely exciting- personally as well as professionally. There were other Indians that I connected with as well. 
One thing to mention was that the academic experience was both challenging as well as humbling for sure. 
While in the West, did you feel anything was lacking? What made you consider a move back to the homeland?
Though I felt relatively satisfied professionally, I felt something missing in the personal aspect. Once you grow up and mature, you realize the importance of family and it dawns on you on a daily basis just how much you miss them. I felt very lonely at times. The family structure in the U.S. is nuclear, which is very different from what we’re used to back home. It hits harder once festivals like Diwali come around- you think you can just go back to visit, but how often can you do that, after all? I also really missed the food back home.
An obstacle that I faced in the U.S. was the terrible medical/healthcare system. Everything seems hunky dory till you fall ill, after which you can easily lose a majority of your savings- the American dream comes crashing. 
How long did you plan for the move before actually taking the plunge?
We (my wife and I) had started contemplating the move back in 2019. Covid in 2020 gave us even more time to consider our priorities and think them through. I wasn’t sure about the opportunities available in India. Collectively, we were earning nearly half a million in the U.S. but I didn’t find such pay in India. Luckily, once GTX contacted me with an awesome role, the pace increased. After that, it just took 3-4 months. 
How did you tackle this salary gap? How did you come to terms with what was being offered here?
I talked to a lot of people who work in India and have built impressive careers. It made me realize the quality of life that was possible with even the minimum that I was being offered back home. The lifestyle this kind of salary can get you is great and impressive. I live a lot better than I did in the U.S.
For example- I was renting a 2 bedroom house there, and paying triple the rent that I would have to here. Now, I am living in a 5-bedroom villa, and I can afford to hire a driver as well. 
This kind of lifestyle is something I could not have even imagined in the West. 
Do you think a lot of the NRIs scare away because of the salary discrepancies? 
Definitely. I feel a lot of people, especially my generation, don’t realize the opportunities in India and the changes that have taken place. Just, for example, the UPI system is brilliant. India is booming – in fact, the U.S is still lacking in several aspects. 
Did you face any hindrances/obstacles during your move back?
No, I didn’t. I really appreciate Micron for making the move easy for me- they helped in every regard. Global Talent Exchange helped immensely as well and made the cross-country moving process way easier. 
What were you seeking out in the career opportunities in India? 
I did set firm boundaries and operated my search within that. I was not willing to take a probational shortcut. I was also not willing to take any steps back, and my professional career should not be compromised. I wanted to remain in the research field. While I was applying, all I could think of were the IITs. It was a rigorous process- luckily, GTX approached me. It made the entire journey efficient and manageable. 
Would you agree that a good opportunity requires some digging and patience? 
I 100% agree! A lot of the NRIs are unaware of what steps MNCs are taking to grow their business in India. It’s also important to mention that a large number of people are under the impression that India is a “back office”. That’s not the case anymore at all. It’s also difficult to find something that aligns with the competencies of the NRIs that have good work experience and have built a strong skill set. Back then, even I didn’t think it would be possible to get the kind of role I got in Micron. GTX helped massively.
How was your experience working with the GTX team throughout the entire process? 
From the time the team initially contacted me till the time I made my move back, they were very helpful. The recruiter helped me understand the title and walked me through the requirements and the company profile. Even though it was during Diwali (festival time), I noticed that there were efforts made to prevent any lapses from either end. After I was connected to Micron, I felt an instant “click”.
GTX made my life easier, I would say. They were very considerate about my schedule and time zone and planned the meetings at a time that was suitable for both. They enabled conversations and followed up regularly. I really appreciate your active involvement and efforts. 
Could you talk about some of the myths that you were holding on to back in the U.S. about what life would be like back in India? 
Definitely the lifestyle aspect- did not think such a luxurious life is possible. Also, I didn’t know India has the kind of opportunities that I now realize it does. I’ve got an impressive position back home. 
There’s also no dearth of anything that you may want- in fact, the choices are endless. For example: If you feel like eating a homely meal, India has a wide variety of “dhabas” (small food joints) but also has stunning 5-star hotels where you could dine in luxury. 
Also, I thought I wouldn’t be able to access nature walks and beaches as I did in the U.S. However, even in India, several people have gotten together to form backpacking groups, tour groups, etc. Everything is available, you just have to find it. 
If you could convey any message to the NRIs that might be looking to move back, what would you say? What developments would you tell them about?
The digital payment system is very impressive and India is headed toward building a cashless economy. The developments in Southern India are something to be marveled at. Bangalore and Hyderabad are a few places that have no dearth of opportunities- in fact, they are at par with the U.S. I would say that there are several job opportunities similar to the San Francisco Bay Area. 
I would definitely advise them to be open about it, and talk to a lot of people. I would urge them to not squash the feeling- if they have an inkling that they want to move back, they shouldn’t ignore it- the emotion is arising for a reason. I would recommend that they research, talk to friends and talk to family. Most importantly, I would recommend they talk to Global Talent Exchange!
Lastly, I would tell them that they can easily find what they seek, they just have to be patient.

The fifth generation of cellular technology is just around the corner, and the Indian government plans to launch the services at the inauguration of the IMC (Indian Mobile Congress). It promises to connect machines, objects, devices, and most importantly, people better than ever before. It promises to transform the way we live and work with better performance, low latency networks, and faster Internet. It shall work toward ensuring uniform availability and accessibility as every user deserves a superior experience.
5G will allow more data to travel across networks in real-time at mind-numbing speeds, all the while maintaining the utmost safety and security of the information. Undoubtedly, it has the potential to rewrite the future of the majority of industries across the globe.
According to a GSA Report, 70 countries were utilizing 5G as of June this year. The network is estimated to reach 1 billion users by the end of 2022- exceptional growth when compared to how long it took for 3G and 4G to reach people. 
However, an event of this magnitude is bound to bring with it a set of challenges, especially in a populous country like ours. It’s time to get together and be vocal about how we can leverage this technology in the best possible ways to accelerate progress across industries and contribute to the development of a sustainable society. Thus, Global Talent Exchange organized a Virtual roundtable discussion on “The 5G Rollout: Expediting India’s Dream For Digital Transformation” as part of our Technology Game Changers Series.
The session was moderated by Brejesh Lall (Professor, IIT Delhi). He is currently IITD Principal Investigator for MeiTY’s 5G & Beyond project and is directing a research team of 6 faculty and 27 research scholars. He has earlier served as the head of the Bharti School of Telecom Technology and Management and was the coordinator of Airtel IIT Delhi Centre of Excellence in Telecommunications and Ericsson IIT Delhi 5G Center of Excellence. He has mentored 5 startups, in the areas of Virtualization, Geo-fencing, UAV-based Solutions, and data mining. He actively participates in building and deploying technology.
The panel consisted of 7 multitudinous thought leaders from companies that are making a massive difference in the Indian tech scenario. They engaged with GTX’s Co-Founder Avinash Bichali during the 2-hour session, contributing their valuable insights and ideas.

The session kicked off on a very optimistic note. Several panelists believe that superior network connectivity can bring uniformity and unity in a diverse country like India. It can bridge the gaps between the metro cities and the rural, ensuring that each spectrum of society can benefit from the technology upgrades that the country is undertaking.
The experts took to discuss the 4G network and how it managed to make such a humongous contribution, especially during the pandemic. Children were able to continue pursuing their education with the help of good network, even in tiny, remote villages. India is in the top 5 countries globally for 4G availability. The network has helped businesses solve the problems of the public- initiatives like Aarogya Setu, UPI, Uber/OLA, OYO rooms, Cowin, etc. are examples of individual empowerment through technological innovation. 
Often with an upgrade of such magnitude, user expectations shoot through the roof- leading to a new concern of whether the hype could pose a challenge in itself, and whether or not there is a mismatch between expectations and reality. However, the panelists agreed that the hype was important, but people must remain patient and give the technology the time and space to unfold to its full potential.

Next, the experts went on to discuss the challenges with deployment that the country could face. Deriving understanding from their years of industry knowledge, they pointed out that the device ecosystem, backhaul, and lack of awareness could act as giant obstacles for the 5G network in India. Governmental policies must be brought into the public domain and people must be educated about the potential use cases that go beyond the typical entertainment screening so that the majority can work toward using upgrades for the betterment of society at large. The panel went into great detail to discuss how healthcare can flourish and reach the furthest corners of the country, enabling remote diagnosis, virtual care, remote surgery, telemedicine, consultations, and more at affordable rates.

Coming to the rollout itself and the India-specific applications, the panel was divided. While some opined that India’s large volume of demand and cost-sensitivity sets it apart from the other countries, others felt that the telecom capacity and coverage operate according to certain standards set from an engineering point of view and the use cases remain relatively similar the world over.
Lastly, the panel took up an extremely important discussion point- talent. Does India have the expertise required? Do tech organizations need to rethink their approach in order to obtain the correct talent? The experts agreed that recruitment has become incredibly difficult over the past few years. While India has an abundance of skill otherwise, it lacks expertise in emerging technologies- ironically, the need of the hour. The 5G rollout and expansion will require a complex ecosystem of top-notch players, and businesses must work on their hiring strategy, bringing onboard employees from tech hubs around the world to give the Indian telecom industry a chance to compete at the international level. 
The session was filled with enthusiasm and vigour, and radiated positivity for better days ahead.

LEVERAGING TALENT FROM GLOBAL TECH HUBS
In the technology-driven world today, it’s no surprise that several tech hubs have emerged in countries spread across the globe. These places are ideal, given their vibrant and dynamic lifestyle and thriving work environment.
The exposure and experience gained in these areas can now be leveraged by India as organizations hire talent to fill leadership or niche-skill roles because of the absence of adequate and appropriate local talent.

1. San Francisco, USA Silicon Valley encapsulates the tech world in the entire Bay Area – comprising San Jose, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Cupertino, Santa Clara, Redwood City, and Sunnyvale. It is the home and ‘mecca’ of tech innovation, with some of the largest and most influential companies based here- eBay, Nauto, PayPal, MySQL, Facebook, WhatsApp, Momentus, Apple, Eightfold, Amazon, Alphabet, and many more. Given the concentration of the ‘biggies’, it’s noteworthy that the Bay Area is also a highly beneficial place for small, mid-sized companies, and start-ups.
2. Hong Kong Hong Kong is home to the Hong Kong Science Park, which is famously known as a centre for innovation. 600 technology companies and about 13000 tech professionals live and work in this bustling metropolis.
3. Tokyo Japan has earned the reputation of being the most dynamic and effective manufacturer of industrial robots, given that its production accounts for more than half of the global robotic supply. With this as a precedent, Tokyo is now quickly spiralling upwards as the place for other tech industries and start-ups.
4. Shanghai 
China’s Silicon Valley or Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park is located in Shanghai, to assist businesses to consistently innovate. More than 1000 start-ups have set base here, with most of them operating within the realms of EdTech and Gaming. The ‘valley’ also has more than 400 Research and Development centers. China accounts for more than a quarter of the global revenue in gaming, making it the largest mobile gaming market in the world.
5. London  
London is striving to become the main tech nucleus and is now regarded as the world’s third most significant and pivotal innovation center. The introduction of a start-up visa program in 2019 has contributed exponentially to the growth of London as a tech hub.
6. Tel Aviv 
Tel Aviv has the highest number of start-ups per capita globally. The city boasts of more than 100 research and development and innovation centers belonging to foreign countries: Facebook, Google, Amazon, and Barclays included. More than 40% of the start-ups belong to the Artificial Intelligence sector, with more than 25% of the city’s workforce employed in this sector. The Tnufa Initiative is focused on assisting budding entrepreneurs to develop unique ideas and concepts, which can attract grants of up to 85% of the approved expenditure. It also enables foreign companies to set up a base and accelerate their business ideas, without debt.
7. New York
New York has made crucial technological advancements, which are led by sectors such as EdTech, AI, Big Data Analytics, and Cybersecurity. There are more than 9000 start-ups and over 100 incubators. Within tech, 886 companies received approximately US$16.2 billion in VC funding in the year 2020. Given the rapid rise of tech in the city, it has emerged as one of the biggest tech hubs across the USA.
8. Beijing 
Replete with resources for innovation, the capital of China plays host to 1000 scientific research institutes, 90 universities, and the Zhongguancun Hub – a hub that has 9000 tech companies such as Baidu and Sina Corporation – both behemoths in their realms and both listed on NASDAQ. China has 70 unicorns – valued at over US$1 billion each – and almost half of these unicorns are situated in the Zhongguancun Hub.
9. Singapore 
This Southeast Asian country is the hub of innovative strategies across businesses and is brimming with highly talented and skilled workers. The government supports businesses through low taxes, a plethora of investment opportunities, and an ecosystem that attracts the best talent. The city has a robust IT infrastructure – often regarded as the best globally. Even during the pandemic, in 2020, Singapore was able to attract US$17.2 billion in fixed asset investments. The Singapore government invested US$19 billion across enterprises as part of its Innovation, Research, and Enterprise program.
10. Ho Chi Minh As per the World Economic Forum, Ho Chi Minh City is among the top ten cities to have incorporated technology to accelerate growth and change. It has also been classified as a city with high potential to become one of the top tech cities in the world. This is attributed to low costs, huge amounts from foreign direct investment (FDI), and a growing consumer market.
Why India Should Leverage Talent from Global Tech Hubs The tech talent in India is amongst the most sought-after talent across the world. Additionally, cost arbitrage in talent sourcing also works to the country’s advantage. Globally, countries are aggressively hiring tech talent, placing a lot of pressure on the Indian hiring system. The attrition rate is high within this realm (24%), with talent moving fast and towards companies that offer better salaries and perks. The talent war is very real and very fierce! With over 4.6 million employed in the tech sector, this sector accounts for about 8% of the country’s GDP, which has exacerbated the demand for digital services. A report by NASSCOM reveals that there are only about 100 persons for every 200 open jobs in the digital space. Given this frenzied race to acquire talent, it would make sense for India to look for tech talent outside of the country. Hiring in the tech sector is unlikely to slow down or stop any time soon, and hence, companies need to put up their top game if they wish to attract the best talent. Inability or unwillingness to train and upskill their staff, and look at talent from other locations, will severely compound the problem of a talent crunch. Opening up doors and being flexible with their hiring options will help tech companies to quickly scale up. It also enables mid-size companies and startups in India to use the expertise of international hires and crack into the global markets with ease. A R2I STORY: KHYATI THAKUR
Mrs. Khyati Thakur is currently working as a Senior Software Engineer at Inspirit.
She had moved to Los Angeles, USA, to pursue her Master’s in Computer Science, and had worked there for 9 years before moving back to India.
She has had a remarkable journey- personally and professionally. Khyati currently has over 10 years of experience working in the tech industry as a software engineer, engineering manager, and product manager and 7+ years of experience working as a K-12 curriculum creator. She has also worked as an educator in a non-profit in India.
The team at Global Talent Exchange got in touch with her recently, and she was gracious enough to tell us her story.

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m Khyati Thakur and I am currently living in Pune. I got my master’s degree from the University of Southern California (USC) and went on to work in the U.S. for a good 9 years as a software engineer. Over time, my husband and I realized we wanted to move back to India, and we’re here now!
A lot of your LinkedIn content revolves around your Return to India journey- could you elaborate on it?
When I first shifted to the US, I was sure that I wanted to come back and not settle there forever, as being close to my family is important to me. I met my husband at USC itself, and we both agreed that we would gain some experience in the US and then move to India. 2020 brought along the Covid pandemic, which delayed things for us. Finally, at the end of 2021, we decided to take the leap and relocate. I write about my journey to help others in a similar position take better decisions and understand how to go about the process.
What were the reasons that made you choose the US for higher education? How was life there- personally and professionally?
I think it was just because I was young and I wanted to explore how life would be in different countries. I was already working in India, and when I asked people how to accelerate my career to the next step, several recommended getting my masters from the US for exposure as well. The course content was great, I was working in a startup, and the work experience was good.
Though I was enjoying the way my life was shaping up, I always wanted to give back. When you’ve lived somewhere for so long, you are very connected to your roots, and family and you’re aware of the problems that exist. I even started working with non-profits in India while still in the US. I wanted to use my experience to build cool stuff for my people in India!
Apart from this, did you ever feel anything lacking in life while in the US?
Definitely. Of course, you can make some great friends in the US, and the colleagues are great, but nothing can even come close to the family and friends you have back home in India. It gets lonely very soon. It’s worse during festival time when you want to fly home with all your heart, but you can’t.
Covid was an extremely hard phase as well. Our parents got ill but we could not come back and take care of them due to the restrictions. It put things into perspective, and all the money that we were getting didn’t seem worth it any longer. The personal aspect overweighs the professional.
What was the “final trigger”? Why did you decide that this was the correct time to move back to India?
In my mind, I was ready to move way earlier than we actually did. Since at the time I was running my own startup, it was definitely easier for me to relocate. However, my husband was hesitant and wanted to explore more career opportunities before moving. 
He did, in fact, land his dream job, but soon after, the work pressure increased massively. The question arose: What are we even doing this for, what is the purpose? We wanted to be close to our family and use our skills to help our country. This was the final trigger. 
Would you say it can get difficult to find jobs across countries, and this search is what discourages NRIs from trying in the first place? What could make this process easier? 
Certainly. It was difficult for me, for sure. After Covid, my startup started losing traction, and I was in the search of a job in India. When I was conducting a job search, I was certain about the fact that I needed to be compensated fairly. 
India is booming right now, there are so many new startups that are solving real problems for the world. A majority of these companies are well funded and they are ready to pay handsome salaries because they want and need good talent. So, while it can be a little difficult to look for good jobs, it’s not impossible- you need to be patient and do your research. India is a silicon valley in the making- this is the place to be in right now.
What are some of the myths that would be debunked once NRIs return home? Do you think they still are envisioning an India that existed, perhaps, 10 years ago?
Most definitely- even I was holding on to such myths; the reality is very different. The job opportunities for sure to start with. I didn’t think it was possible to get such good salaries that are now possible. When we left India, the work culture was very different.
On a personal note, even the family scenario has changed. People are so much more liberal and there has been a major mindset shift and they are ready to accept new ideas- creativity is cherished! I thought I’m returning to the same old India, but that wasn’t the case. It’s not only our generation that has changed, even the older generation is more accepting and open-minded. 
What message would you convey to other immigrants who might be considering a move back? 
I would tell them about the career opportunities- there’s absolutely no shortage/limitation of them here. I would want to tell them that they can get paid just as much as they are in the US, but the interesting part is that they don’t need to. With just half of what they were getting paid in the US, they can lead an absolutely luxurious lifestyle in India. This is why even Silicon Valley VCs are looking for opportunities here and investing in the businesses.
On the personal front, I want to tell them that they will never be able to develop the kind of connections and relationships as they have in India. I understand it’s difficult to take the plunge, but it is so worth it.
Immigrants gain a lot of good exposure while working in the US. In what ways do you think they can leverage their experience to secure leading positions in India, and use their savings to lead a comfortable life?
NRIs can manage to save a lot of money. From my own experience, my husband and I were earning for just about 7 years, but when we moved back to India, we didn’t have to worry about finding work immediately. The amount that we saved was more than enough to sustain us for about 6-10 years even. We could sit back a bit and discover what we wanted to do further- such downtime is practically impossible in the US. Then again, the exposure you’ve gained can be utilized within the country as several companies would be willing to offer a lucrative salary for your expertise.
  Once you finally moved back, how easy or difficult was it to settle down? Is that a major point of concern? I would say it takes time to settle down. The weather could take you aback at first- India is a relatively hot country, but there are places with a cool environment as well. Also, the air quality and pollution could pose an issue, but this is where you came from and it doesn’t take extremely long for your body to adjust.
I think there are pros and cons to living in each country- you just have to prioritize. If you’re moving back to be close to your family and reconnect with your homeland, such problems hardly matter. Moreover, the food in India is so very fresh- be it vegetables, fruits, or milk. For example, in the US, we would get a massive 4-gallon jar of milk that would stay in our refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks, which is extremely unhealthy. Here in India, we get fresh milk at our doorstep daily.

DRONE TECHNOLOGY: WHERE IS INDIA AT?
India is ‘soaring high’ with Drone technology!
  Drones or UAVs (unmanned Aerial Vehicles) can be ‘piloted’ remotely or even be fully automated with the help of a system of sensors and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) detectors that calculate movement.
  With the massive growth of technology that we’re witnessing today, drones have evolved and are now being used for several purposes, ranging from being decoys in combat and launching missiles, to monitoring climate change and disaster management, enhancing agricultural efforts, and contributing to law enforcement. Drones were even used during the Covid-19 crisis in order to deliver vaccines to remote locations.
  Read on for a better understanding of their ‘regime’ in India.
Government Initiatives
The government continues to promote drone technology with several initiatives that actively use this technology:
SVAMITVA (Scheme or the Survey of Villages and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas): An initiative of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, it is aimed at making sure that rural people have the right to document their properties. Land mapping is undertaken via drones, with the vision that latest by March 2025 every Indian village will be covered by SVAMITVA. Drone technology mapping also creates a database of rural lands, which could be used in the future for projects of development.  
Relaxation in Drone Regulations has been one of the highlights for this realm. 2021 brought about liberalized rules that helped entrepreneurs and new business owners efficiently use drone technology and compete at a global business level. With the ease of use and lowered restrictions, India is poised to grow exponentially in this technology and could become a global drone hub as early as 2030!
PLI (Production Linked Incentive) Scheme for Drones and their Components complements the liberalization of drone regulations. The incentives being provided to manufacturers and companies are to ensure that an increasing number of them invest in drone technology and the benefits reach a larger number of industry sectors, including, but not limited to healthcare, surveillance, geo-spatial mapping, real estate, and others.
The Hara Bhara Campaign promotes reforestation with the help of drone technology – an initiative by the Telangana Government and a private company. Drones with the capability to disperse seeds over farmlands in a bid to maintain and sustain ecological balance.
The Drone Mela at Gwalior organized in December 2021, was a joint effort by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of Madhya Pradesh, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) at Madhav Institute of Technology and Science (MITS). The event was for investors, manufacturers, farmers, and even students – interested in the many uses of drones for various sectors. The announcement of the setting up of 5 drone schools in Madhya Pradesh was also a major highlight for the country.
Kisan Drone Yatra held in February 2022 witnessed the launch of 100 Kisan Drones from 100 different locations across the country, to be used for addressing agricultural issues in the villages and also for spraying pesticides. A company – Garuda Aerospace – has been assigned the responsibility of making 1 lakh drones over the next two years.

The New Drone Rules August brought an easing of the restrictions on ‘unmanned aircrafts’, enabling increased ownership and operation of drones in the country. One of the most notable changes in the rule is that in the micro and nano drone category, owners would not require a remote pilot’s license. The coverage has been ramped up too – from 300kg to 500kg and will include drone taxis.
‘Droning’ in New Job Opportunities
With the emergence of drone usage and technologies, the job market has evolved and opened up with a range of opportunities, across industries. Drone technology has suddenly spiralled from being a niche segment to being a critical and mainstream one. The new and liberalized drone rules have augmented this segment and the industry is expected to grow exponentially in the next decade, with several new career possibilities. Here are just a few. 1. Assemblers and Design Engineers Expertise in several engineering realms is urgently needed within this realm. Hence, those who have engineering expertise in Mechanical and Robotics Electrical and Electronics, and Aeronautical, are in demand for building drones, while assemblers are in demand to put it all together. 2. Drone Pilots With the increase in demand for drone operations, ‘pilots’ with proficiency in remotely managing the flight of drones is a highly valued skill. Given their critical role, training and certifications with industry-specific specialization are extremely important. Hence, trainers and institutes that impart such training are also in demand, creating more jobs for people who can impart such knowledge and manage the institutes/training centers. 3. UAV Flight Organizers This is also a highly specialized job requiring skill in flight scheduling, knowledge of altitude and weather, and specifications with regard to the kind and method of image and video capturing. Such flight planners would also have expertise in specific use cases, exact flight locations, and knowledge of zones (red, yellow, and green) to keep drones away from restricted zones. 4. Software Engineers for Drones
Accurate and secure software for drone operation is crucial to the success of these devices. The software must not only suit the use cases but must also be extremely secure to ensure safety from cyberattacks. Hence, this new realm gives rise to a new breed of software developers, who need to be constantly upskilled to keep pace with the dynamic technology. 5. Data Specialists for Drones Drones are being used to capture data, and hence, drone data specialists and analysts are in demand to process and analyze the vast amounts of datasets that would be available via drones. Additionally, another set of employees – GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Engineers – are also in demand. Their job is to create and test GIS platforms to match specific user needs, and each industry would need experts as per their realm to convert drone data into usable information. The good news for emerging drone aspirants is that there are formal training institutes and relevant courses in India to help them start their drone journey. Several universities are tying up with associations and companies to facilitate courses that will enable one to land good jobs within the drone industry. The Flight Ahead While still in the nascent stage, the drone manufacturing industry is growing wings (literally so!) The government is essaying a critical role in accelerating the country’s drone industry – and experts agree that the pace is faster than other global players. The adoption of drones and their technology has already picked up the pace, but there is still a lot to be done from the perspective of making them indigenously. As we move forward, further policy changes and reforms and ease of financial assistance would be required to grow this sector exponentially. The sector has the potential to create a substantial number of jobs, which in turn would drive economic growth and stability, and bring about all-inclusive development.
