always kind of funny when you wake up from a dream and your first thought is "that symbolism was kind of heavy-handed wasn't it."

(apparently since people are unable to tell, this post is not in support of a specific ending, but something I made out of annoyance from seeing people absolve Maelle from any responsibility for her own choices "because she's just a child/teen")

people are really going "Maelle's just a child!" about her ending and I hate to break this to you but Alicia is 20-something years old when she gets painted over, so she is only 16 until she remembers herself (also, 16 year olds are not automatically absolved of all responsibility for their choices because they're not adults? yeah they make bad teenage choices & lack maturity but they're not children & should not be treated like children). I get that it never gets brought up specifically beyond Clea acknowledging she's not a child while also implying she hasn't grown up, and that the physical difference can be difficult to spot, but she is taller & looks less like a twiggy teenager.

We know Verso and Clea played in the canvas often, hinting that they were somewhat close in age/maturity, but also that Alicia chose not to. Not that she was unable to, was too young or wasn't allowed, just that she preferred other things. She was also old enough to paint with the other kids.

Verso is 26 when he dies, and whatever the actual age difference is, it's clearly not anywhere close to 10 years or Alicia would have been like a toddler here. Not to mention how Alicia was probably just short in general compared to the rest of them, always the baby of the family, always bright eyed and naive.

Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if they had all kids pretty close together, Clea and Verso probably closest (but hopefully still with reasonable gaps), but for the ease of the arguments sake let's say over a 5 year period. In that case Clea could be 27-28, Verso 26 and Alicia 22-23. If Verso was like 11 in the flashback above then Clea would be 12-13 and Alicia 7-8, which seems somewhat reasonable to me based on what we see.

Of course that 22-23 doesn't include the time it took for Alicia to heal after the fire to the point she is at when she enters the canvas, but that's a lot harder to estimate with how little we know of the outside universe and its rules.
