------ Faroff Friday (12) ------
THE HIATUS IS FINALLY OVER! HUZZAH!
There was no real reason for this hiatus other than me getting out of the semi consistency I'd created by ‘I'll do it next week'ing myself too many times, but I've set up multiple barriers to prevent procrastination in the future and, hopefully, help me get back into being able to write on a schedule, so we'll see how well that works.
Anywho, I will be going over a subject I've actually talked about extensively with a close friend, so I have quite a bit of material to attempt and cover in this (it's really great that I do this purely because I want a backup file to cite in the future when/if my theories are proven to be true because I want that proof + I love ranting about shit I like because these essays are definitely created for an EXCESSIVELY niche audience)
Things (I Think) People Miss About Tobias
Title is definitely going to be confusing because the very nature of it being ‘things people miss’ means you're probably going but I didn't miss anything and honestly, it was pretty recently that I realised just how many of the things I thought about Tobias during my first reading of this series are actually not that likely to be true. This realisation was really the result of months of discussion of his character with the aforementioned close friend which is why, as stated before, there is quite a bit to go over.
Tobias’ initial reaction to Fenn is not as normal and sensible as it's treated, and, similarly, Fenn's reaction is actually a lot more normal and sensible than it's treated.
I actually realised this a while ago, but I've never brought it up on here (or on my main blog, for that matter) for some reason or another.
We as readers have a biased view of Fenn and Tobias’ situation, especially since Faroff is a story with two perspectives instead of one, leading us to have more special information than we might typically have. We know that neither Fenn nor Tobias have ill intent towards each other, so it's easy to see Tobias not reacting with fear or suspicion and think this is the normal, obvious response to have, because we know that Fenn can be trusted. Again, similarly, because Fenn is both characterised as paranoid and does, in fact, react in a very strongly negative manner to Tobias’ appearance in his life, it's easy to think he's the one who's unreasonable. But this is mostly because we are looking at this from our perspective (our perspective, you know, the one that has the special information that the main characters don't have), and not from theirs.
Fenn and Tobias have (had?) absolutely no reason to trust each other. Actually, they have, legitimately, every single reason to not trust each other. They are enemy soldiers fighting in a war that has stretched on for decades. Not to mention Fenn has a physical advantage over Tobias and was actively threatening him during their first encounter. To look your enemy who is not only armed with a fucking gun but is also taller and stronger than you and is ACTIVELY POINTING SAID GUN AT YOU AND THREATENING YOU… in the eye… and not be scared or at least suspicious… is not a normal response (it is actually this in combination with many other things I've noticed that have lead me to theorise that Tobias is self destructive.) Fenn was entirely in the right to be freaked out and on edge when they first met, especially since the destruction of the border wall (even without throwing Tobias in there) is a horrifying experience on its own.
Tobias doesn't trust Fenn as much as we think he does. (AKA: Fenn trusts Tobias more than Tobias trusts him)
We have the illusion that Tobias trusts Fenn more than Fenn trusts him because he isn't as skittish and obviously overthinking all the time like Fenn is. However, I think it's less trust and more just not…being afraid of him? Whether it's out of a lack of regard for his own safety that leads him to not care if Fenn does do something or just having a talent for reading people that means he can just tell Fenn wouldn't hurt anyone, I do think that’s the truth of the situation. Adding onto this, I actually think it is somewhat because of this that he has not built up much trust throughout his relationship with Fenn.
Allow me to elaborate.
Fenn (damn, I'm talking about Fenn a lot for a Tobias dedicated post) was definitely scared of Tobias in the beginning. In the very least, he did not want to underestimate him. His experience was different from Tobias’ in that instead of not being afraid of him right off the bat like Tobias was for him, he had to slowly build that from the ground up through taking personal risks and seeing how Tobias never took advantage of his vulnerability or broke his trust. To me, getting that through actual experiences is far more impactful.
More than that, Fenn wears his heart on his sleeve, so (whether he wants to or not) he has been very vulnerable since the very beginning. Their first interaction was Fenn having a crisis. He's had panic/anxiety attacks happen right in front of Tobias. But Tobias is rarely anything other than nonchalant and unbothered around Fenn–he obviously tries to keep any real, extreme emotions of any kind under wraps. Tobias knows a lot more about Fenn than Fenn knows about him–Tobias is actually extremely cagey about anything personal, to the point where Fenn doesn't even know his last name. This, to me, backs up the idea that Tobias does not really trust Fenn just yet, at least not in any way that really matters… while Fenn has come to a point where he has some foundation of trust through actual vulnerability and experiences that proved Tobias’ trustworthiness to him. Tobias is going to need to be more open with him for that trust to really start to be reciprocated, because he would never share his personal issues, or his backstory, or anything that really bothers him in the way that Fenn has with him.
I think that we as the readers think that Tobias is just very laid back, and I do think that's true to some degree, but in the contrast between him and Fenn and his reaction to any question being even slightly personal (where Fenn has begun to open up, Tobias has very consistently stayed shut up) I think there's more to the story.
Let's hope all of this made sense and I didn't just ramble on in gibberish for over 1k words…
I have more to say but if I want this to be posted today I'm going to have to split this into two posts, so I'll continue on this subject next Friday!
→ Thank you for reading!

------ Faroff Friday (11) ------
First Faroff Friday post since the end of the Great Faroff Hiatus of 2024 (huzzah), so I will be commemorating this occasion by going over a theory I actually meant to go over on here weeks ago, that theory being what Tobias' sculptures really mean symbolism wise!
I was going to go through and take screenshots to back up the claims I will be making during this, but time and patience is running thin, so you're just going to have to trust me.
One of the things I noticed while reading Faroff is that Tobias never whittles anything on screen aside from a bird (and the house for Miss Sofia Mittens, but that instance is exempt because it was a necessity.) We've seen his sculpture shelf, which is full of different types of sculptures, so it's clear that a bird is not the only thing he can make. Yet, in almost every scene where he is actively whittling or holding one of his sculptures, it's a bird. We even see it in one of his flashbacks, where his younger self gives a carving of a bird to his mother.
So why would he only whittle birds? Well, what do birds symbolise?
Freedom.
I theorise that whatever Tobias is consistently whittling on screen represents what he wants/needs most in that period of time.
Tobias is currently in a state of being trapped. He's stuck at Faroff Station and can't leave until his service is up, and even when it is, he'll be made to go back to his family, which we've seen to be abusive in the past. He will likely be made to stop practicing art, and assuming the Faroff universe (and Vaylin specifically) is at least somewhat aligned with attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community during the actual 1910's, his sexuality won't be accepted or even widely known (the first usage of the word 'bisexual' in the English language, in the context spoken of here, was in 1892.) It's very possible he won't even be able to keep his hair long. I also theorise that Tobias' family is a pillar family and has an 'heir and the spare' situation (Edward being the heir, Tobias the spare,) but even if he is the 'spare', he will still have a lot of responsibilities he will be expected to uphold, many of which he has no choice in.
I honestly do not need to state every reason for it to be clear to the average Faroff fan that Tobias is not in the most favourable state. It would make perfect sense for freedom to be the thing he wants above all else at this point in the story.
This may or may not be a long shot, but I feel it's a cool enough explanation for something that hasn't been explained in universe.

------ Faroff Friday (10) ------
Faroff is drawing closer to it's return (only three days to go, counting the day it comes back!) so I will be marking the end of this dreadful hiatus with another prediction of what's to come (I already wrote one of these before, but who's to limit me?)
This one is more like something I think will happen in a matter of episodes, as in something that will come soon, rather then 'I think this is going to happen immediately in the next episode', for the record.
SO, let's get started!
I'd think we're all rather informed on the fact that Tobias' house currently has a tree in it.
My question is, what happened to his whittling supplies + his sculptures?
Looking at this layout compared to the position of the tree...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...it's possible his sculptures survived.
Although, they could still end up being destroyed during the removal of the tree, or just during the general reconstruction, if they haven't been destroyed already.
My theory is based on Tobias' general attitude towards his whittling. Right now, while I wouldn't say he's ashamed of it, he doesn't see it as anything worth being noticed or mentioned. He never attempts to show Fenn his art (unless it's something he's made with the purpose of being used by the both of them, like Miss Sofia Mitten's cat carrier,) although he never tries to hide it either, because he thinks it's meaningless.
In the event that his sculptures and/or whittling supplies were destroyed (or even if they weren't, honestly,) I suspect that Tobias might be reluctant to start whittling again. Especially since he's set to be living with Fenn for awhile, he may view doing it at his house as rude or disrespectful (his past with his family's reactions to his carvings isn't particularly helpful either.)
But, considering Fenn's more than enthusiastic reactions to his art in the past, I think it likely he would encourage Tobias to get into it again (in whatever trying-to-hide-how-much-I-admire-you way he chooses, of course,) perhaps leading to our next set of unreasonably wholesome interactions.
I haven't really thought about how exactly Fenn would do that yet, although I like the idea of him subtly getting Tobias back into it by acting like him whittling something is a necessity--for example, saying things along the lines of, say, he needs new tools for his kitchen. Fenn, as we all know, would be ridiculously awful at hiding his purpose behind it, considering how he reacts every time Tobias makes art, but still, I think it would be nice.

------ Faroff Friday (9) ------
Hello and welcome to yet another completely irrelevant discussion on Faroff! Will I be talking about anything actually relevant to the story? No! Are you, for some reason, still reading this? Yes, apparently--so it must be working to some degree.
This (yet again late) episode of Faroff Friday will be going over why it was a good decision for the colour of Tobi's uniform to go from green to the current colour it is now.
Why?
Because I'm a hyperfixated Faroff fan with too much time on my hands.
1. Indirect Characterisation
In one of the earlier episodes [Episode 27], not long after Fenn and Tobias met, they played a game of cards. For every loss, the winner got to ask the loser a question of their chosing.
Tobias asked Fenn his favourite colour, which he answered with blue. Tobias follows up with pointing out that blue is the national colour of Sona, which Fenn is from.
This is a form of indirect characterisation, which makes Fenn's patriotic nature and love of his country even clearer to us than it already was. This helps build on his character and us, as readers, to develop a better understanding of him.
However, Tobias also mentions later during the episode that his favourite colour is green. If the original colours had been kept, green would also likely be the national colour of Vaylin. Which would make this not only out of character for him, but also effectively nullify any characterisation that Fenn received from this interaction.
2. Symbolism
I went over my perceived symbolism behind the colours in Fenn and Tobi's design in my first Faroff Friday post, so you can read that if you want the specifics, but the basic run down for the canon uniform colours is that they're complementary, which fits, because they're meant to be enemies.
If the original uniform colour had been kept, it would make them analogous, once again destroying that symbolism (although there would be new symbolism to fill its place, in that case.)
3. Variation
Almost everything we've seen in Faroff so far has a cool colour palette, from the background to the characters. Tobias is the only one with a warm colour palette (out of the present day characters, it's likely his family and other Vaylinians also have a warm colour palette), which not only makes his character stand out a bit compared to everything else, but also adds much needed variation to an otherwise cool coloured world. If he still had the original uniform colour, that would no longer be true, which could result in the Faroff world being flat and uninteresting from an aesthetic perspective, due to a lack of contrasting colours.

------ Faroff Friday (8) ------
Well, this one's a bit late, so... Faroff Tuesday? Man, I'm getting bad with keeping up with these.
A few theories I have with no explanation or elaboration (Some of these might get special posts later):
Sona is an absolute monarchy
Sona regulates the media so their citizens are only allowed to see the things approved by the king. There is a complete lack of outside media, at least spanning to anything from Vaylin, but perhaps including Condessa as well
Vaylin is a dictatorship
There's logical reason to conclude that Tobi's brother is good (although there's an equally plausible one for him being bad. Maybe I should do one on both sides or split it into two posts)
Tobias was sent to Faroff Station because of whatever knowledge he has about the war. Specifically, he found out about something and was sent away in order to make sure he keeps his mouth shut
The war is a ploy for Sona and Vaylin to keep perpetual martial law over their citizens

------ Faroff Friday (7) ------
I decided to bring back my old hobby of making flag designs and make some flag designs for Sona and Vaylin.
Vaylin design:
Tumblr media
Red: Symbolises power, strength, and valor.
Yellow: Symbolises wealth.
The symbol: Canon Vaylinian symbol in the series. The circle represents the supreme lord, and the four bars represent the four most powerful and wealthy families that surround him.
Sonan design:
Tumblr media
Blue: Symbolises honesty, authority, honour, and power.
White: Symbolises peace and unity.
The symbol: Canon Sonan symbol in the series. It's the national bird of Sona, the quillven, and represents strength and unity.

Random Faroff Facts!
Observation Based:
- Faroff takes place during the spring
- Fenn's dad died in 1907
Assuming Faroff Takes Place In 1918:
- Fenn would've been around 11 years old when his dad died
- Fenn's year of birth would be 1896 [April 4th, 1896, if we want to be specific]
- Tobias' year of birth would be 1895 [November 19th, 1895, if we want to be specific]
Relating To Our World:
- In episode 13, Tobias uses the idiom 'knock yourself out', a saying that didn't come around until 1936, making it historically inaccurate to the time period. However, considering their history is different from ours, I'll let it slide and assume the saying just came around earlier in their world.

------ Faroff Friday (5) ------
So I don't usually talk about my theories that have anything to do with stuff directly relevant to the plot, mostly because I don't want to be proven wrong after I publicly declare it, but this... I don't want this to rot in my rambling server and Discord DMs for all eternity. I want to get the right to say 'I knew this was going to happen' before Faroff comes back from hiatus. So, without further ado, bear with me y'all...
MY THEORY FOR WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT
Disclaimer: This is not my only theory on what will happen next. I have like 18 of them. It's concerning.
So. We all know that Sonans have been taught to despise Vaylinians, right? This most likely includes villainising the supreme lord and the four pillar families that surround him, as they are, to our knowledge, the highest parts of Vaylinian society and their government. These families are, presumably, referred to by their last names, as families usually are when talked about in a collective manner.
It has also been heavily implied that Tobias is from one of the aforementioned pillar families. This is seen in episode 43, as well as in some comments throughout the story, although those can be harder to identify.
Assuming this is all true, let's get on to the main part of my theory. Specifically, Fenn not knowing Tobias' last name.
In episode 23, they introduce themselves to each other for the first time by name. Fenn makes a point of introducing himself with his entire name (Fenn Velle), however, Tobias doesn't, and only introduces himself by his first name.
Secondly, in episode 5, it appears to me they go out of their way to let us know that Tobias' full name is on his supplies boxes that he gets every month, when he says it out loud as he opens the box. No one else was there for him to tell it to other than Miss Sofia Mittens, and while both Fenn and Tobias talk to her a lot, the same specification (name being on the box) was not made for Fenn. Maybe I'm reading into this a bit too much, but Lennon has never been the sort of author for filler details with no relevance to the plot, so I'm allowing myself to overanalyse a bit.
Finally, (as of episode 58) Fenn just received his supplies, which implies that Tobias will be receiving his soon as well, since it was shown at the beginning of the story that they get theirs around the same time.
Are you piecing it together yet?
No?
Alright, I'll spell it out for you.
My theory is that in the next few episodes, when Fenn and Tobias go over to the Vaylin side to work on his house, Tobi will receive his supplies, and Fenn will read his name on the box, therefore learning his surname and connecting the dots.
This would be, in my opinion, a smart and efficient way to move the story along, as it kills two birds with one stone: introducing new conflict, and revealing that Tobias is from a pillar family.

------ Faroff Friday (4) ------
SO THIS WEEK'S POST WILL BE DEDICATED TO ANALYSING THE SHIT OUT OF FENN'S DREAM EPISODE, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS EPISODE 54!
This will be mostly analysing symbolism and the general meaning behind what certain things in the episode were meant to represent.
Prepare thyselves soldiers, for you have never seen anyone overanalyse and overinterpret like I'm about to right now..
In fact, I will have to organise everything into categories so it all makes sense--
╾───╼ Dream Portion ╾───╼
I. Clothing
II. Actions
Ill. Characters
╾──────────────────╼
╾───╼ Nightmare Portion ╾───╼
IV. Clothing
V. Actions
VI. Characters
╾────────────────────╼
ᵈʳᵉᵃᵐ ᵖᵒʳᵗᶦᵒⁿ
Clothing
Tobias wearing casual clothes instead of his soldier's uniform
Individuality
Trust
Essentially, it shows Fenn's view of Tobias outside of being an enemy and accentuates the fact that he's starting to see him as another person.
Fenn isn't wearing his helmet + doesn't have his gun
Trust
The first time he took it off around Tobias was when he was trying to clean the cuts on his face (from saving Miss Sofia Mittens in episode 38) and it was getting in the way. Less certain about this symbol but generally think not wearing it is a symbol of trust and maybe comfort? Especially since it shows up again later. You could also enforce this by citing something Fenn says in episode 57 ("A proper soldier must wear his uniform when he's on duty"... Actually thinking about this, the fact that he is technically is wearing his uniform but it's incomplete with the removal of the helmet and his weapon could be a symbol of him slowly letting his guard down, although not completely)
Actions
Tobias whittling
Individuality
Admiration
Tobias' talent with whittling is one of the few, if not the only thing Fenn will openly admire about him at the moment (even with the whole "for a Vaylinian" thing, he's more clear about it than anything else. "Who wouldn't appreciate art?")--I see its presence in the dream as a symbol of Fenn's admiration.
Proximity (allowing Tobias to get close to him w/o trying to stop him)
Comfort
Trust
It shows how he's getting more comfortable with Tobias, shows a growth in trust, and accentuates on the character development we saw in the 2-3 episodes preceding this one.
Fenn being calm & comfortable (and not running on the pure essence of panic and moral crisises)
Comfort
Trust
Fenn tends to be like this when he's not thinking about Sona at all and/or when he feels his caring for Tobias is justified. To me it somewhat represents a sort of separation between him and Sona.
Fenn calls Tobias by his name and not 'Vaylinian'
Comfort
Trust
Individuality
Even though the symbolism relating to Fenn calling Tobi 'Vaylinian' is softer than it was before (I view it more similarly to referring to someone by their full name now), I still see him calling Tobias by his name as a symbol of trust (especially since it first happened when he agreed to bring back the truce.)
Characters
Miss Sofia Mittens (although she only showed up as a carving in this episode)
Connection
Trust
Miss Sofia is generally a symbol of the "bridge" between Fenn and Tobias, and a meaning in life and direction beyond the war. Especially since she's from Condessa (the neutral country) and not Sona or Vaylin, she's a perfect choice for the role. Also, Fenn and Tobias both treat her like their own family, so allowing the other to take care of her is a big sign of trust.
Note: Not exactly symbolism, but Tobias called Miss Sofia Mittens "Miss Sofia" in the dream, because even though she's Mittens to him, it's Fenn's dream. Just a neat detail.
* This dream is still subject to analysis--new symbolism may be discovered and touched back on at any time. Additional input is encouraged.
────────────────────────────
ⁿᶦᵍʰᵗᵐᵃʳᵉ ᵖᵒʳᵗᶦᵒⁿ
Clothing
Tobias' outfit turns into his Vaylinian uniform
Distrust
Rift
Conformity
It's a reminder that Tobias is an enemy, and Fenn's struggle to see past that--basically strips Tobias of any sort of individuality in the idea that he's "just like" how he's been told Vaylinians are, not to mention reminds him of his devotion to his country.
Fenn's helmet + gun comes back
Distrust
Rift
Conformity
The completion of his uniform boxes Fenn into how Sonan soldiers should be, and sets a rift between them as it also reminds him that he's Tobias' enemy too. Following the rules of the quote I mentioned earlier, it also implies his guard being up fully.
Actions
The general "grabbing" Fenn
Inescapability
It conveys the idea that Fenn is starting to feel like his duties are a burden he can't escape and doesn't have a choice in--suggests a slight loss of faith in Sona or at least beginning to see Tobias as more important than he did before.
The general showing up just as he was allowing Tobi to get closer to him
Sense of impending doom/paranoia
Fenn appears to have this sort of irrational fear that no matter where he is, Sona will find out about anything he does wrong, even if there's no logical way they could.
Falling
Feeling out of control
The sky changing colours
Fear
This one is pretty clear and run of the mill--the sky being stormy around the general just adds to the feeling of impending doom associated with his character. Also symbolises inner turmoil.
Characters
The general
Sona
Duty/responsibility/honour
Guilt
Internal conflict
Represents the side of him that's devoted to Sona and can't process/doesn't care if Tobias doesn't fit his image of what a Vaylinian is--also relates to the sense of impending doom and the fear that Sona will find out about everything even if there's no logical way they could. The general being a giant in the dream adds to the feeling of inescapability.
Miss Sofia Mittens
The carving of her disappears during this segment--implying the removal of the symbolism surrounding her as well.
Also, less significant (yet very adorable), but she does appear briefly at the end as little Cupids surrounding Tobias, which symbolises his growing affection for Tobi.
────────────────────────────
Overall, I decided to do an analysis on this episode because I feel it's an incredibly important part of one of the biggest turning points in Faroff, and conveyed Fenn's internal conflict over trusting and even becoming fond of Tobias in an excellent manner.
Other bits of symbolism that were there but weren't included in the main post for one reason or another:
The extra soldiers at the end shouting at Fenn (I somewhat grouped them in with the general. All of the symbolism that is associated with him is associated with them.)
Fenn refusing the order to shoot Tobias (quite obviously displays his care for him, plus his own set of moral codes...seemed a little bit too clearly set out for me to try and elaborate on it)

------ Faroff Friday (3) ------
Okay, so, anyone who's read Faroff knows that Vaylin always delivers Tobis supplies via parachute, like we see here:
Tumblr media
Even three years ago, when Tobias first arrived, they brought him there via parachute--
Tumblr media
So WHY HAVE I SEEN ABSOLUTELY NO ONE QUESTION THE WHOLE ENTIRE BROKEN DOWN, CLEARLY VAYLINIAN CAR WE SEE IN THE BACKGROUND OF EPISODE 37!?
Tumblr media
I HAVE NO THEORIES ABOUT THIS, NO HEADCANONS, I'M GENUINELY DUMBFOUNDED I JUST NEED PEOPLE TO BE AWARE OF THIS

------ Faroff Friday (2) ------
So. Uh.
I figured out what I think Miss Sofia Mitten's accent would be if she were human.
Yes, I figured out the fucking cat's accent, I thought we already knew that l'm insane
Now, Faroff isn't set in our world, but there are some minor correlations I've noticed.
This is a simple visual model of which country each of them are from in universe:
Tumblr media
If you're a Faroff fan, you might know that Tobias has an Irish accent, and Fenn has an English one.
Now, me being a geography nerd, I remembered awhile ago while reading this that Ireland & England are side by side, just like Sona & Vaylin are in Faroff (although their locations are switched)
So this is where they would logically be from if they existed in our world:
Tumblr media
As you can see from the first map, their cat, Miss Sofia Mittens, is from Condessa, which is a country south of Sona & Vaylin.
You might notice there is also a country south of Ireland & England... Wales.
Tumblr media
So that's it. That's why I think she'd have a Welsh accent--

------ Faroff Friday (1) ------
I recently noticed that Fenn & Tobias' uniforms are complementary colours, which makes perfect sense considering they're enemies (excellent use of subtle symbolism if it was intentional). However, their favourite colours (and the colour of each other's eyes) are blue and green, which are analogous.
Again, if intentional, this is a GREAT use of subtle symbolism to portray how they're meant to be opposites/enemies but also how they're supposed to work together :)
