"Talking about scents is hard. Talking about scent 'identity' is difficult (since you have to have good scent recall) but doable, since you can make direct comparisons - 'this fragrance smells like A, it smells like B'. But if you're just trying to describe a fragrance without making a 'smells like' comparison - if you're trying to describe fragrance in terms of 'aspects' and not 'identity' - that's trickier. Fragrance creators and fragrance fans have established a few almost synesthetic terms to help with this. A 'green' fragrance is something that usually has to do with fresh plant notes, often the scent of cut green grass. A 'gourmand' fragrance is basically something with the smell of vanilla somewhere in it, but rendered in such a way as to emphasize the edible aspect of vanilla, not the powdery, discolorized aspect. I also feel there could be a new fragrance term that could be useful; the 'iridescent' fragrance. I use it in my head already. To me, this means a fragrance that prominently uses Cashmeran, a fruited, damp musk molecule that reminds me of the smell of wet concrete. It has a prismatic quality in the sense that it hides multiple aspects depending on what you 'search for' within it with your nose, and what you 'search for' within with your mind." - Jacqueline Steele, Perfumer/Owner Goest Perfumes.
