Which Do You Like More, Sweet or Sour (a Pokemon fanfic) {Chapter Three}

It was a beautiful day. The Mitrallian sun shone down through clear blue skies as Ryuugo, the newly appointed Dragon type specialist of the Elite Four, walked through the streets of Mitral's largest city, Deltrona. He moved to this region quite recently, and hadn't taken the time to learn the layout of the city, so he figured now would be as good a time as any.

He walked past shops, boutiques, restaurants, and while they looked interesting, he wasn't quite in the mood for getting new clothes or blowing his first League paycheck on some food he probably wouldn't even like anyway. His partner, now a Hydrapple, trailed behind him, mildly intrested at various pastry shops they passed. Ryuugo suddenly stopped in front of one of the pastry shops, causing Hydrapple to accidentally bump into him, all 7 syrpents hissing in anger.

"Whoa, sorry buddy!" Ryuugo said. "Hey, why don't we check this place out?" He motions toward the shop they're standing in front of: a bakery and pastry shop named 'Irisweets'. Hydrapple takes a sniff of the air, smelling the delectable aroma of cakes and pies, and barks affirmatively. He opened the door to the shop, letting his partner enter first, to the sound of a bell. A female voice called out from the back, "Be right with ya in just a second!"

The door separating the front from the kitchen flew open, and a woman carrying a bowl of dough, which she was hurriedly stirring with a whisk, entered. She had dark skin with flecks of white flour dotting her arms and cheeks, curly brown hair tied up into a bun and covered in a hairnet, an apron covering what appeared to be a t-shirt of the former Galar champion Leon, and light blue jeans with flour and other stains covering her thighs. Her coffee brown eyes caught the light in such a way as to appear as if they were glowing, and her expression was one of both frantic hurry and overwhelming joy.

And Ryuugo felt his heart skip a beat.

"Welcome to Irisweets, run by yours truly! I'm Iris, what can I getcha for today?" She asked. Ryuugo snapped out of his stupor and looked at the menu board above her. U-Uh, I think I'll have an apple pie?" Iris grinned. "I'm actually making one right now! Just take a seat over there near the window, and I'll have out for you as quick as I can!" Before she left, she turned to look at him to ask a new question.

"One last thing, which do you prefer, sweet or sour?" Ryuugo once more was froze, then blurted "Sweetie - I mean sweet, please." His face grew red from the blunder, but Iris just grinned even wider. In truth, he didn't like sweets all that much, he much more preferred sour flavors over sweet, and normally he'd be able to keep his composure, but something about her made that much harder for him.

She went back into the kitchen in the back, leaving Ryuugo standing in the middle of the shop, his heart still thumping out of his chest. Hydrapple looked at him, a smug look in his eyes. He saw the look in his partner was giving him and his face grew hot and he furrowed his brow. "Don't look at me like that!" He said, to which Hydrapple lightly jabbed his side with his horns, in the direction of the table near the window Iris directed him to. He rubbed his side, grumbled, and sat down to wait.

Only 15 minutes afterward, Iris came out of the kitchen, carrying a steaming hot apple pie. "Here ya go, one sweet apple pie!" Ryuugo stared at the pie in wonder, and asked "How did it take you such a short time? You had just begun cooking, right?" She smiled at him and put a finger to her lips. "That's a secret, sweetie." she said, emphasizing the "sweetie". "Though, since you're so nice, I think I'll let you know. Tun-Tun, Del, come out here!" She yelled to the back. After a couple seconds, the door opened, but instead of a person, a Delphox came out, and an Appletun waddled out shortly after.

The Delphox stood at attention calmly, but the Appletun made a beeline to Hydrapple, and the two started conversing in half barks, half hisses. "Del here cooks my products with her flames, her Mystical Fire adds a lot of flavor! And Tun-Tun provides part of his back for me to use as the crust, so really all I really needed to do was prepare the fillings! I made those out of his Apple Acid, so it's extra sweet, just for you." She winked, making Ryuugo's face red once again. "T-thank you, Miss Iris, I-" she giggled and said "Just Iris is fine, Ryu."

He became confused. "Wait, you know who I am?" She full on laughed this time. "Of course I know you, you're the new Elite Four member, every trainer worth their salt in this region knows who you are!" Ryuugo grumbled under his breath in embarrassment. She kept laughing. "Man, you are a RIOT! I haven't laughed this hard in months!" She wiped her eyes and put the pie in the box and handed it to him. "You come back soon now, alright?"

He nodded and walked out the door, Hydrapple following close behind. Even hours later, he couldn't stop thinking about Iris. Her face, her eyes, her voice, everything about her captivated him. And little did he know, she was also completely infatuated with him. Even after she closed, his stumbling over his words, his vibrant blue eyes, the way his short black hair looked as if he had just gotten out of bed, all of it stuck in her mind and she couldn't shake those thoughts free. As they both laid down to go to sleep, unbeknownst to them, they both thought in unison:

'I need to ask him/her out next time I see him/her.'

*timeskip 3 months*

As the Flying Taxi arrived to take Ryuugo, now properly dressed in his new school's uniform, a nice white dress shirt, a red tie, and grey pants, to his new Trainer academy, he and his family said their farewells

His mom hugged him and handed him a small box. "We were waiting for your next birthday to give this to you, but you'll need this for your time as a trainer." As he opened the box, it shook, and out flew a Rotom Phone. Ryuugo watched in wonder as it zipped and flew around him, before sliding into his pocket.

"It's so cool! Thanks a lot, Mom!' he thanked her with an awe-filled voice. Applin, too, sitting on his shoulder, yipped and barked his thanks to his caretaker's own caretaker.

His father kneeled down and handed Ryuugo a set of small prayer beads. As he dropped them into his hand, he closed it with his own hands. "Whenever the going gets rough, say that prayer I taught you a couple weeks ago into these and keep pushing forward, do that and nothing will be able to stop you, got it?" Ryuugo nodded, put the beads around his wrist and thanked his dad, too, with a hug.

Finally, Anno handed his little brother'a plastic baggy with a syrupy candy apple inside. Ryuugo and Applin's eyes lit up. "It looks so yummy, thanks Anno!" But before he could grab the bag, Anno lifted it out of his reach, much to Ryuugo's disappointment. Awww, what's the big idea, big bro?" he asked, jumping to try to reach the apple.

Anno chuckled, "This is for the little guy, not you." he said, motioning to Applin. "You're only to give him this when things get tough and you don't think he'll be able to pull through for you, alright Ryuu?"

He sighed and accepted the terms, and put the apple in his bag. He started walking away to the taxi. His father couldn't keep his composure, and yelled after his son, crying a little, "Have fun while you're gone, alright, don't get into any trouble!!" Anno and his mom laughed a little at the outburst and joined him in waving their farewells. Ryuugo turned and waved back, his eyes closed to hide his own welling tears, and he climbed into the cab, ready to start this new chapter of his life.

*timeskip 4 hours*

The boy was jolted awake when the cab finally settled on solid ground. As he opeed the dorr, he was greeted by a tall, portly man in a fine tailored suit, his smile bright and his brown eyes gleaming. "Ello there, Ryuugo! Mind if I call you Ryuu? Welcome to Wyndon's very own Knight's Crest Academy! I'm Director Oak - no relations to either professor or the former Kanto Champion, but please, just call me Principal." He patted Ryuugo on the back and motioned him to follow. "Here, I'll give you the tour of our fine establishment!"

The next half hour was a whirlwind, 'state of the art' this and 'cutting edge' that, but when it came time to show the infirmary, Director Oak stopped in front of the door and sighed. "I'm sorry, but i dont think i can show you what's in here. It's nothing absolutely terrible, but -" he sighed again. "We've been having case after case of students suffering ruptured eardrums and severe headaches after coming too close to our supply shed to the north of this building. We think it may be a Zubat or something similar holding up in there, but we just don't know for sure."

"Why don't you let me check it out?" Oak turned back to Ryuugo and looked at him like he was insane "Hear me out: I have experience calming restless and belligerent Pokémon, all I need is a couple poke balls, some Berries, and a pair of ear stoppers, and no one else needs to get hurt."

Oak sighed once again and gave him a look. "Ya sure about this, Ryuugo? You could get seriously hurt, and your Applin may be at a type disadvantage." Ryuugo nodded, a determined look in his eyes. "it could be seriously hurt, maybe that's why it keeps hurting people who get too close, maybe it's just defending itself."

"Alright, alright. I'll get what you need. Please be safe out there, okay?"

*skip another half hour*

Ryuugo stood at the door of the shed. He made sure he was as quiet as possible to avoid alerting whatever's inside. He stuck the earplugs into his ears, and readied the ball holding Applin, and he opened the heavy metal shed door.

Immediately, a burst of wind and a high pitched sound cut through the air. Ryuugo stood firm, even as his head started ringing. He walked into the building, looking around for a possible source. He looked up, seeing a faint shadow in the shape of a bat flapping it's wings up near the ceiling. "Rotom, use your flashlight up there, on the ceiling!"

Rotom flew out of his pocket and shone a light on the figure, a Noibat, with a damaged foot and a pained look on it's face as it continued to emit it's earsplitting Screech. After a few seconds it paused it's noise and started flying in a circle, resting it's speaker-like ears for another burst. Taking this chance, Ryuugo tossed his ball up. "Applin, Astonish, now!!" he commanded. Applin burst forth and smacked the Noibat on the head, causing them both to fall. Applin landed in front of Ryuugo softly, and Noibat dropped onto it's back, squeaking in pain from the impact.

"I'm so sorry, little guy, you -" before he could finish his sentence, Noibat leapt up, flew only a few feet away from him, and it's ears started vibrating in preparation. Ryuugo realized what it was doing, and yelled "Applin, quick, Withdraw!!" but Applin didn't catch the order in time, and got caught up in Noibat's Screech. Because it was so close, it pierced through the ear plugs and started hurting his own ears, and he feel to the ground, his ears splitting and his eyes beginning to hurt.

Applin, seeing his master in such pain, leapt up tried to hit his assailant, but Noibat used a Wing Attack to smack him away. He slammed against a wall, and fell to the ground, nearly sapped of strength.

Ryuugo saw this and ran to Applin, extremely worried for his partner. He rummaged through his bag and pulled out the only healing Berry he had; an Oran Berry. He cursed under his breath and fed it to Applin, regaining just enough strength to continue fighting. He wracked his brain trying to think of another strategy. He felt Applin nudging his bag, and had an idea. He picked him up and grabbed the candy apple his brother gave him. 'Now's as good a time as any', he thought.

He held the apple up to his partner, and as his little head leaned forward to touch the apple, both were consumed by bright blue light, so bright Noibat once again paused it's audio onslaught.

The light cleared, and sitting on his hand was a new, slightly larger Pokemon, covered in golden syrup and a small green spike sticking out from his head. "Dip!!" the pokemon barked, two voices overlapping in defiance.

He looked back to his master, waiting for his next command. "I... I can't believe it... You evolved!" he said incredulously. Dipplin, formerly Applin, barked in unison again, this time in joy. He check his phone to see what new moves he had, and smiled.

"Dipplin, Syrup Bomb!!" Dipplin's cheeks swelled, and he spat out a glob of syrup, hitting Noibat dead on. sticking it to the back wall. Noibat squeaked and tried to Screech, but it couldn't get enough energy to execute it. Ryuugo stood and walked to Noibat, who recoiled in fear. It closed it's eyes, waiting for him to finish it, but instead, he began removing the syrup and gently lifted him up.

He removed his plugs and said "Like I was tryin' to say before, I'm so sorry for hurting you, I just wanna help." He rummaged through his bag and held up a Tamato Berry to the bat Pokémon. "Here, I heard Noibat and Noivern really like these ones!" Noibat looked at the Berry, then at Ryuugo, then attacked the Tamato, scarfing it down in only a minute.

"Wow, you ate that even faster than he did!" He motioned to Dipplin. "Well? How was it?" Noibat swallowed the last scrap of Berry, burped, and squeaked contentedly. Ryuugo smiled and said "I'm glad, now I'd like to ask something of you, if that's okay." He pulled out one of his empty pokeballs and held it out. "I wanna take you to the school's infirmary to help fix this leg of yours, but I'm afraid I might hurt you if I carried you normally, so could you get inside this ball, please? I'll release you as soon as you're all fixed up if you want me to."

Noibat took a second to consider the offer, then tapped it's head against the ball's button, sucking him up into it. The button flashed a couple times as it rocked and shook, before the *click* sound went off, signaling a successful capture.

*skip 4 hours*

The sky was getting dark as evening approached, classes were finished for the day and Noibat was back to fighting and flying shape. Ryuugo knelt down to the ground, letting him out of his ball. He stood up, no longer feeling any pain in his leg, which was all bandaged and healed by the school nurse.

"There you go, now what do you want to do?" he asked the little pokemon. "No matter what you decide, I'll support your choice." Noibat looked back at the woods surrounding the school, in the direction of freedom. Then he looked back at the human who helped him, even though he hurt him so bad. Noibat overheard his talk with the nurse after they arrived back at the school, the Screech he used permanently damaged his eyes and impaired his vision. He wasn't blind, he could still see, but things would be blurrier and he can't see as far anymore. Seeing this human he hurt still care for and forgive him left him with only once choice.

Noibat hugged Ryuugo's leg with his wings, squeaking happily. Ryuugo smiled and pat his head. "Alright little buddy, lets go home now." He stood, and Noibat followed, flying behind him and Dipplin, who was sat on his shoulder, also very happy he decided to stay. The three would never again be separated, even as the days, weeks, months and years flew by. New team members were added along the way; a Goomy found in the Laverre Nature Trail on a field trip to Kalos; an Arctibax given to him by a fellow Dragon type user on a family trip to Paldea; and a Riolu from a peculiar man in navy blue on a trip to Sinnoh.

He completed his education at age 19, and moved to a region he'd never heard of before on a job offer to become a member of the Elite Four there: the Mitral region, and there he would be asked a certain question by someone who would change his life for the better.

Which Do You Like More, Sweet or Sour? (a Pokémon fanfic) {Chapter One}

"Big bro? Where are you?"

The young boy Ryuugo called out. He and his brother had been playing in the forest near their home, a little farmhouse overlooking fields of Berries, with a large apple tree in the backyard.

The boy and his brother had moved here rather recently, to the Galarian countryside, with their family, and were set to enroll in a nearby academy in the fall, so until then, until they could make friends, when they weren't helping their parents, they were playing in the woods or out in the yard. This time, however, during a particularly competitive game of tag, Ryuugo and his brother got separated.

"This isn't funny anymore, Anno! Where are you?! He called out again. He was quickly growing anxious and frustrated with his elder brother, it was only about an hour or so until sunset, and he didn't want to be left alone in the dark, with so many dangerous Pokémon lurking. A gust of wind ruffled the boy's short black hair, and he looked into the direction of the unexpected sensation reflexively.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a green speck quickly dart into the underbrush. His brother had been wearing a green wristband he got from a fiend before they moved, so Ryuugo ran after it, thinking it to be his brother. He chased it for a couple minutes before he lost sight of it once again. He was left spinning in a small clearing, looking frantically for any sign of the green speck. Upon learning it was once again lost, he fell to his knees in frustration in front of a small bush.

"Dang it..! i lost him again..! Why was he running so fast?!" He huffed, out of breath and growing angrier and more anxious by the moment. Just then, the bush in front of him began to rustle. Ryuugo inched closer to catch a glimpse of what could be moving under there, when suddenly---

*SMACK*

He was hit in the face and was thrown back onto his rear. He gripped his nose and groaned in pain. He looked up with tears in his eyes to see the thing he was chasing; a little Applin, suspiciously bereft of an apple shell, and covered in mud and scratches, eyeing him with fear and hostility.

This isn't the first time he had seen an Applin, as some tend to naturally hang and skulk around his home's apple tree, but an Applin without an apple was definitely something he'd never seen.

"Whoa... you okay, little guy? I'm sorry if I startled you." He said, extending a hand to the creature. The Applin backed away, barking "Lin-LIn! Lin-Applin!" as if telling the boy to scram or he'll bite, but Ryuugo just cocked his head and smiled, retracting his hand. "It's alright if you don't trust me, I wouldn't either if I was in your shoes." He rummaged through his bag and pulled out a Razz Berry, and softly rolled it to the Pokémon.

"Here you go, these are my favorites, and the other Pokémon where I live love them too!" He grinned as he declared the Berry's deliciousness. Applin eyed the fruit warily, but it's stomach growled and it reluctantly inched forward and took a bite. It's eyes lit up and it began scarfing the Razz Berry with frightful speed. As it ate, it's scratches and wounds faded, and it's fatigue faded away as well.

"Hehehe, I'm glad you like it, little guy!" suddenly he had an idea. "Hey, how would you feel about coming with me? I can give you more Berries there, and I have an apple tree, so I can give you a new shell too!"

He opened his bag for Applin to climb into. It once again backed up warily, but it knows that this human before it has no bad intentions, and being unable to refuse the human's shining, vibrant blue eyes, so reluctantly once more, it inched forward and entered his bag. He carefully righted and re-zipped his bag, leaving a small opening so Applin can breathe. As he put the bag back around his shoulders, the anxiety from before set in again, and he let out a shaky exhale. The sky was growing redder and redder by the second, so he finally resolved to head home, without Anno, it'd be better for one child to return than neither, he thought.

*skip 40 minutes*

After walking for a while, Ryuugo finally caught sight of his house's lights. he turned to his bag. "Hey, Appy, is it alright if i pick up the pace a bit? We're almost there, so is it okay if I run?" he asked his new companion. It barked affirmatively in response. He grinned in response and hit the gas, running as fast as he could while keeping a hand back on his bag to keep it from jostling too much, though from Applin's noises it seems he's definitely failing at it.

"I'm so sorry, little guy! We're almost there, just hang on a little longer okay?" He burst out of the treeline, to the sight of his mother pacing on the porch worried, his father inside talking frantically on their landline, and most surprisingly, Anno attempting to comfort their mother. He was the first person to catch sight of Ryuugo, and he yelled "Hey, there he is! Mom, Dad, Ryuu's back!"

They all run out to greet him, and Anno pulled him into a tight hug, his voice shaky as he spoke. "I'm so sorry i left you back there..! During our game, I came up on a wild Ursaring, and I got so so scared, I... I... I'm so sorry, Ryuu!!" He cried into his little brother's shoulder, their father putting a hand on Anno's back, comforting him.

"I-it's alright, Anno, really, I forgive you, just..." he started, trying to hold his own tears back. "Let's just play tag in the yard from now on, alright?" he said, Anno letting out a little chuckle through his sobs. "Y-yeah, of course, little guy."

Their mother knelt down to her kids, and put a hand on each of their backs. "Lets just get inside, you two need to eat and rest after such a long day." She said softly.

Suddenly, though, Ryuugo's bag began rustling, and Applin burst forth, sitting on Ryuugo"s shoulder and hissing at Anno, who nearly crushed him in the bag with his hug. Everyone else stepped back in shock.

"Whoa! You have an Applin with you? And it doesn't have a shell!" Their father said, incredulously.

Ryuugo perked up, and said "Oh, I rescued this little guy when I was looking for Anno, he was really beat up when I found him."

"Wow, even he ones here are really skittish, and you earned his trust that easily...?" Anno said, thinking about whatever could've led to this. "If you were able to get the trust of such a skittish Pokémon this easily, you should become a Trainer!" Anno said, their parents nodding at each other in agreement. "I'll see about getting you into this Trainer's school, it's a little ways out into the city, but I wouldn't mind driving you if that's necessary." Their father said.

"Grab an apple from the tree in the backyard, and see if he likes it, I'll go and get you a ball for him!" His mother said, turning and walking back into the house. Anno gets back up and walks back in too with their dad, leaving Applin and Ryuugo alone out front. He turned to Applin and, as he walked to the tree, said "Well, how about it then, do you wanna be my partner, little guy?"

Applin barks affirmatively in response once more. Ryuugo smiles and lifts Applin into the branches, and it slithers, moving from apple to apple, searching for one to settle in, then deciding on a lone green apple hanging just above it's head. Once it gets inside, it sparkles and glitters.

"Whoa, you're a shiny?! That's so cool!!"He said, jumping in the air in joy. Applin jumps too, happy to finally have a shell, but it fell and accidentally bonks him on the head, knocking him on his butt again. They both groan in pain, but they laugh it off together on the grass, a sweet start to a wonderful partnership.
