Last week, I had the most amazing and heart lifting opportunity to work with my sweet friend Andrew (@kramertime) in Camp Indigo’s first virtual camp! . For those of you who don’t know, Camp Indigo is a camp specifically for trans and gender diverse kiddos from ages 4-16, meant to supply them with the space and opportunity to be fully themselves amongst other amazing kiddos much like them! 🤗💚 . With almost 100 attendees on this first virtual version of camp (that is normally held in person in the Bay Area in Northern CA), I was holding back happy and hopeful tears all week long. They had such beautiful things to say and share, and just seeing them feeling comfortable and free to be themselves with each other and all of us as their camp counselors and instructors...Just..Agh. My heart, my heart, my heart. 💚 . I’m stoked camps like this exist today, and would have LOVED the opportunity to attend in my youth. I didn’t learn I was trans and even that being trans was possible until I was 24, and struggled a great deal especially in my adolescence. I wonder at times how different it could have been for me had I known sooner and had opportunities like this to connect with others early on - so I’m passionate about spreading awareness and education and supporting programs like these, and as trans adult, I loved every second with these stellar young ones. . We danced, sang, read books, talked with each other, wore silly hats, wore onesies, dressed in fancy clothes, told lots of jokes and riddles, made protein snacks, exercised together...There were science sessions, art projects, other cooking sessions, parent sessions, and so much more - all with an amazing staff of lovely and supportive fellow humans. 💚 . Sooooo...Looks like registration is already half full for a second virtual week of camp (August 3-7)! Woo!! 😍🙌🏽 . This is me. . I was a teenage boy back in 2007, graduating high school about to go off to college. And today, I am a (nearly) 30 year old man. . I am a man. . It’s taken me a long time to call myself a “man” and feel that that is true. I would otherwise say, “I’m a guy” or “I’m a boy”. When society is often telling us that we are not who we say we are and what a man is supposed to be and look like - when we are not fully confident in ourselves, we may tend to believe those voices. . They also say if we speak highly of ourselves, that we are arrogant. So we fear doing so - and in turn talk down about and to ourselves instead. I’m here to help rewrite this story. I’m here to be my very best friend and biggest cheerleader. To encourage and lift myself up. To stand strong in who I am. To speak to myself the way I would with any other. To speak love into my heart, lungs, and veins - into every ounce of my being. . A week from today, I am going to be 30 years bold, and I’m here to tell you, I am a man. I am a proud Transgender man. Beautifully complex, sensitive and strong - and perfectly imperfect - I am human. . Standing tall at 5’1”, dancing and tossing leaves and flowers and love into the air for all those who will catch and receive them - I cry. I smile. I laugh. I hug. I touch. I hope. @starcallers4035 took me on my first outing yesterday since surgery. Eeee! 💙🤗 We did a little grocery shopping together. 😋🙃 It was so nice to get out of the house for a bit. Yesterday was sore, sleepy, and a little nauseous - and about a 4 on the pain scale. Manageable! My bits are bruised, swollen, and healing, and walking is getting easier and better each day. What was the day before a hunched back and slow, hobbling advances, yesterday and today are more upright and steadier steps. On the mend and on my way! I am so grateful and amazed with my body and its ability to heal, adapt and grow through all of this. A little update on my status - I'm staying in the hospital 1 more night, and doing well! My pain level is around a 2-3 at the moment. Very manageable. ☺️🌌 They wanted to keep an eye on and stop some bleeding that was occurring earlier today at the incision on my scrotum. They put some SurgiSeal on the site, and I’m going to heal up totes fine. Bleeding is contained. 👌☺️💙 Dr. Ley said she's glad too it's happening more externally and not into my scrotum for my new testes to swim around in. 🙃🤓 Thank you all soooooo much for your support and loving sweet words, well wishes and positive, healing vibes. Catheter is out!! 😍🙌 It was soooo much less painful than last time...I hardly felt it. It came out so quick and smooth. Thank goodness. 😋 When I saw Dr. Ley earlier, she explained how my urethra is nice and wide and she didn’t need to scope or dilate me when putting in my catheter - that putting it in went in smooth and easy as well. She sounded very pleased. 🤗 Got to get up for the first time and move to sit in the chair after too! Eating breakfast meow, and my pain level is at about a 5 at the moment - not too bad! 😄💙 And I got to see it! The skin that was on either side of my phallus is gone and moved down to create my scrotum officially!! Eeeeee!!! 😍🙌 I’m bleeding some, but nothing serious, and there is some swelling in and around my phallus. Always keep in mind - Patience is key for these surgeries. It may look brutal at first, and the healing process is pretty amazing I’d say. Only thing left to do is pee for the first time here before I’m able to get discharged today, so waiting on that urge, and then I’ll be good to go! I am so incredibly grateful for medical science and my insurance for all of this to have been made possible for me in this life, and for my body and its ability to heal, adapt, and bounce back so quickly and smoothly. And of course - for Dr. Ley and her staff. Here to see Dr. Ley for my pre-op for stage 2!! Dr. Ley was trained by and works with Dr. Toby Meltzer in Scottsdale, AZ. I had stage 1 (Urethral lengthening and vaginectomy) with her 3 months ago, and today I’ll be having stage 2 (scrotoplasty and placement of perms/testicular implants). They currently accept WA Apple Health (what I have), Kaiser, and Blue Cross Blue Shield.
