Maybe not ‘let them read’, perhaps ‘give it to them to read’ (and thus change the rest of their life)
But how young is too young to read about sex and murder and revenge?
Question: how old were you when you first read The Odyssey?
If you were young, did you read an abridged version, and do you know what was cut out?
If you have kids, how old would you let them read it at?

I screen-recorded the ‘other posts’ footer of my Tumblr because it looks like Michael Sheen is just walking around in my comics preparing to be Odysseus and it makes me happy

PLEASE If you’re a Sherlock Holmes fan who loves great cartooning *and* reading between the lines (because shipping the two main characters is so much adorableness) then PLEASE sign up for Molly Knox Ostertag’s In The Telling so I can squee over her amazing comics with you!

I listened to MAG 200.
I am dead now.
I may need some really sweet fic recs please
I finally got spoilered for the end of TMA (which, tbh, was not a surprise) and now I can’t bear to listen to the last twenty eps. They went to London and it all went great and they’re happy. Right?

I love Diomedes. He totally shines when Achilles withdraws from battle, grumpy sod that he is. I need more Diomedes adventures/artwork please.
Diomedes is the depiction of ‘it’s on sight’ (meaning if I see you, ima fight or kill you)
it doesn’t matter who you are or what you bleed.
Paris shot him in the foot, and what does he do, not bitch and moan about an arrow being in his foot, he decides to spews insults at Paris, talk about iconic
he throws a spear (guided by Athena) and wounds Ares, a war god, causing him to retreat
he harms Aphrodite just because she interfered in trying to help/save her son. Then later when Apollo was sent to retrieve the son, Diomedes tried to fight him.
Give this boy (he’s a grown ass man, buuut he was one of the youngest in the Trojan war) more appreciation, he can actually survive an arrow to the foot (classically calling out Achilles)

I’ve listened to so much of The Magnus Archives that I’m now imagining Telemachus speaking with the voice of Martin Blackwood 👀

March/April ‘24 update:
- 180,000 words (HOW?)
- 650+ sections
- now each time it ‘ends’ you get a new epithet and are told how long your fame will last
- petting the damn dog is the best bit
- I got another translation of The Odyssey for my collection (I think that’s six now?)
- the Odysseus-In-Disguise vs Penelope section is DONE
- it’s all good omens and suitor-slaughter from here on out…
IT’S ON THE HOME STRAIT MY FRIENDS! 💪
As usual, most of the updates are over here https://laurajenkinsonbrown.co.uk/you-are-odysseus-signup/ with the mailing list (600 of you now!!) but I thought as I get a writing day later this week I’d update here as a treat!
You Are Odysseus
So
I’m a teacher of Classical Civilisation that has taught the Odyssey for over a decade and studied pretty much every myth and story with Odysseus in it.. I think
and I’m writing an Interactive Fiction (choose your own path) version of the Odyssey, inspired by the Homeric phrase “he turned his great heart this way and that”, where you are Odysseus, allowing you to follow his decisions or make your own
and it already has 500 sections to it - written to emulate modern translations of the Odyssey, including the literary features of simile, formula, epithet, and the rest - and 21 different ways to die, and quite a lot of period and theme-appropriate alternatives
(and if I get time, the option to be Telemachus or Penelope, although that might have to wait because it’s already a monster)
and I’ve tested what I’ve made so far on my pupils, other Classics teachers, and some of the leading (and best-read) Greek Mythology podcasters and YouTubers, all of whom have universally loved it (yay!)
(EDIT: Oops and I presented on it at the Classical Association conference last year)
I’m trying to finish it this summer, but need a bit of encouragement to do so
EDIT: and I forgot to say that ideally I’m planning on it being a beautiful BOOK with an old-fashioned cover and lots of ribbons to mark your place ❤️ (ex-bookseller ofc)
so, please let me know if you’d like to know more!
(EDIT: or sign up here go get notified directly when it’s ready: https://ljenkinsonbrown.wordpress.com/you-are-odysseus-signup/ )
