Embrace Native Trees: The Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis)
Tumblr media
Adding a splash of color to your landscape has never been easier with the Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis). This stunning native tree can transform your garden with its vibrant pink flowers and charming heart-shaped leaves. Let’s dive into why the Eastern Redbud is the perfect addition to your backyard and how it can benefit both you and local wildlife.
Springtime Splendor
Imagine your garden waking up from winter with a burst of color. The Eastern Redbud dazzles in early spring, its branches adorned with small, vibrant pink flowers before the leaves even emerge. These blooms create a breathtaking display that can turn any yard into a picturesque scene, making the Redbud a favorite among gardeners looking to add beauty and charm to their outdoor spaces.
Wildlife Haven
But the Eastern Redbud isn’t just about looks. It’s also a fantastic choice for creating a wildlife-friendly garden. Here’s why:
Pollinator Paradise: The vibrant flowers attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. By planting a Redbud, you’re helping support these crucial creatures, which play a vital role in our ecosystems.
Bird Buffet: Once the flowers fade, the Redbud produces seed pods that are a valuable food source for birds. Sparrows, finches, and other species will thank you for this delicious addition to their diet.
Planting and Caring for Your Eastern Redbud
Ready to bring this beautiful tree into your garden? Here are some tips to ensure your Eastern Redbud thrives:
Choose the Right Spot: Eastern Redbuds prefer well-drained soil and can tolerate both full sun and partial shade. Make sure you plant your tree where it has enough space to grow to its full size, which can be up to 30 feet tall and wide.
Watering: Young Redbuds need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Once established, they are relatively drought-tolerant, but a little extra water during hot, dry periods can help them stay healthy.
Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of your tree to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
Pruning: Prune your Redbud in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or diseased branches and to shape the tree. This helps maintain its health and beauty.
Why Choose Native?
Planting native trees like the Eastern Redbud has numerous benefits. They are well-adapted to local conditions, require less maintenance, and support local wildlife. By choosing natives, you’re not only enhancing your garden’s beauty but also contributing to a healthier environment.
Conclusion
The Eastern Redbud is more than just a tree; it’s a symbol of the beauty and resilience of nature. By planting one in your garden, you’re making a statement about the importance of preserving our natural heritage and supporting local ecosystems. So why wait? Add a splash of color and a touch of nature’s magic to your landscape with an Eastern Redbud.

From Lifeguard Dreams to Sun Safety: My Journey and Tips for Skin Protection
Tumblr media
Ever wonder if your childhood dreams could have turned into a nightmare? When I was 16, I aspired to be a lifeguard, watching over swimmers from a high guard chair, feeling invincible. Little did I know, those sunny days by the pool could cast long shadows over my future health. Here's why I'm grateful I never became a lifeguard and how my journey led me to embrace smarter sun protection choices.
Growing up in the 80s, our sun protection options were limited: no sunscreen or tanning lotion. My household fell into the no-sunscreen camp. I wasn’t outdoors as much as my friends, so I usually ended up with a light tan and no burns during the summer. I guess less sun exposure spared me from skin issues today. Unfortunately, today my lifeguard friends are having issues with their skin.
Thankfully, we now have more choices than when I was a kid. I’m particularly fond of the new retro zinc protection. While chemical sunscreens were effective, reports of them causing skin issues made me rethink my choices.
In 2021, the Food and Drug Administration, which oversees sunscreen safety, proposed its latest update to regulations for these products. The agency reviewed 16 ingredients and reported that only two, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, are “generally recognized as safe and effective”, or GRASE, based on the available information. A GRASE designation means the ingredient is widely recognized as safe and effective by experts. (EWG’s Guide to Sunscreens, n.d.)
I thought sunscreens were meant to protect us, not harm us, so I switched to Zinc Oxide a few years ago.
The Benefits of Zinc Oxide:
Physical Barrier: Sits on top of the skin, reflecting UV rays.
Sensitive Skin Friendly: Less likely to cause irritation.
Varied Formulas: While it can leave a white cast, sheer formulas are available.
Frequent Reapplication: Essential, especially after swimming or sweating.
The Benefits of Chemical Sunscreens:
UV Absorption: Chemical filters absorb UV rays and convert them to heat, which is then released from the skin.
Versatile Options: Available in various textures (lotion, spray, stick) and feels (lightweight, moisturizing).
Broad Spectrum Protection: Look for SPF 30 or higher.
Frequent Reapplication: Essential, especially after swimming or sweating.
Choosing the Right Sun Protection:
Sunscreen: Ideal for everyday wear, active lifestyles, or those who dislike a white cast.
Zinc Oxide: Perfect for sensitive skin, babies, or those who prefer mineral protection.
Whatever you choose, make sun protection a daily habit!

Have Your Cake and Sear It Too: Choosing the Perfect Pots and Pans for You
Stainless Steel vs. Aluminum: Revealing the Perfect Pans for Your Kitchen
Ah, the comforting sounds and smells of my mom's kitchen. I remember those trusty stainless-steel pots and pans that seemed to magically appear every mealtime. I have come to the conclusion that stainless-steel truly is a workhorse in the kitchen, offering durability and versatility that can stand the test of time.
But maybe you, like me, had a stint with aluminum cookware that ended in a scorched memory (literally!). While aluminum heats beautifully and is budget-friendly, it can be a bit delicate.
That's where my journey to glorious stainless steel began! Stainless steel offers the best of both worlds: even cooking and easy cleanup, plus the heirloom quality that lets me cook with confidence.
Now, let's unlock the secrets of cookware materials – stainless steel and aluminum – to help you orchestrate culinary masterpieces in your own kitchen!
Stainless Steel Serenade: A Song of Durability
A Timeless Tune: With proper care, stainless steel pots and pans become cherished companions in your kitchen, lasting for generations.
A Symphony of Flavors: Stainless steel doesn't react with most foods, meaning your culinary creations will taste exactly as amazing as you intended.
An Easy Encore: Cleaning up is a breeze! Stainless steel is dishwasher-safe and resists sticking, making post-meal cleanup a delight
The Versatile Virtuoso: Stainless steel works beautifully on all heat sources, including induction cooktops, and can even transition seamlessly from stovetop to oven.
Aluminum's Allegro: A Lively Performer
A Budget-Friendly Overture: Aluminum cookware is a great choice if you're on a budget.
The Heating Maestro: Aluminum excels at conducting heat quickly and evenly, making it ideal for tasks like searing and achieving those beautiful golden browns.
A Lightweight Dancer: Aluminum pots and pans are a dream to maneuver around the kitchen, especially for those with limited hand strength.
The Browning Ballerina: Looking for that perfect caramelized crust? Aluminum cookware is your best friend for achieving those restaurant-quality sears.
Considering the Chemistry of Cooking
Aluminum can react with acidic foods, potentially affecting flavor and color. While research on the health implications of aluminum leaching from cookware is ongoing, stainless steel offers a peace of mind for those concerned.
The Final Act: Choosing Your Culinary Cast
When selecting your cookware, ask yourself these questions to conduct your own kitchen symphony:
Durability, Versatility, and Health: Stainless steel takes center stage.
Budget and Quick Heating: Aluminum cookware might be your perfect sous chef.
Browning and Searing: Aluminum is a star performer in this area.
Acidity: For dishes with tomatoes or vinegar, stainless steel is the way to go.
Stovetop to Oven: Stainless steel offers seamless transitions.
Delicate Dishes and Simmering: The even heat distribution of stainless steel shines.
Bonus Tracks: Additional Notes
Cooking Style: For delicate dishes, even heat distribution of stainless steel is preferable.
Weight Preference: Aluminum's lightness is a perk, but some cooks prefer the sturdiness of stainless steel.
Multi-ply Marvels: Consider multi-ply stainless steel cookware. It combines the benefits of both materials, offering durability with a heat-conducting aluminum core.
The most important factor? Choosing cookware that inspires you to create and nurture your love for cooking. So grab your whisk, put on your apron, and get ready to compose culinary masterpieces with the perfect pots and pans by your side!
This is my favorite pot from All-Clad. I use it for so many meals. This one was the first pot I bought. I collected them one at a time over 5 years. they can be expensive but if you look for sales and/or just purchase one at a time you will wind up with a set that will last a lifetime without have to repurchase cookware!

Summer Sizzle Solved: Conquer the Kitchen with Instant Pot and Crock Pot
Remember your childhood summers where days stretched on forever, filled with lemonade stands and fastback bicycles? Fast forward to adulthood, and scorching summer days can quickly turn into a battle against the heat, especially when it comes to dinner. Preheating the oven transforms my kitchen into a sauna,(not the good kind) and standing in front of a hot stove feels like punishment, not culinary creation.
Fear not, my fellow summer warriors! There's a delicious and cool solution waiting in the form of two dynamic kitchen companions: the Instant Pot and the Crockpot. I want to explore how these countertop heroes can transform your summer cooking routine.
Instant Gratification, Instant Pot:
Imagine this: you roll in after a day of battling the elements, craving a comforting meal but with zero desire to stand over a hot stove. Here's where the Instant Pot swoops in, your superhero of speedy yet succulent dishes. This marvel of modern cooking utilizes pressure to slash cooking times in half. Just like my moms pressure cooker from the 1960’s. Think juicy pulled pork for sandwiches, melt-in-your-mouth ribs, or hearty stews – all simmered to perfection in a fraction of the traditional time. Weeknight worries become supper triumphs, leaving you more time to relax and enjoy the precious summer evenings.
Beyond Speed: A Kitchen Chameleon
But the Instant Pot's power extends far beyond just speed. It's your kitchen chameleon, transforming into a slow cooker for those days when low and slow is the way to go. Picture perfectly tender pulled pork for barbecue night, creamy soups that warm your soul, or even decadent desserts like molten chocolate cake. Craving perfectly steamed vegetables that retain their vibrant colors and nutrients? The Instant Pot handles that too. Need to sauté aromatics for a quick flavor base? No problem!
Healthy Eating Made Easy in the Summer Heat
The Instant Pot isn't just a time-saving hero, it's a champion of healthy summer meals. Pressure cooking retains more nutrients in your food, ensuring you get the most out of every bite. Plus, its one-pot wonders mean less mess and less oil used, keeping your summer cooking light and healthy. I’m picturing perfectly fluffy quinoa for a protein-packed side dish, or steamed asparagus drizzled with lemon and olive oil – healthy options that won't weigh you down.
The Crockpot: Your Slow and Steady Sidekick
Now, let's not forget the trusty Crockpot. While the Instant Pot is all about speed, the Crockpot shines in its ability to slow cook meals to tender perfection. Those days when you're out and about enjoying summer activities? The Crockpot becomes your reliable partner. Simply throw in your ingredients in the morning, set it on low, and come home to a delicious and fragrant meal ready to devour. Think hearty chili for a casual gathering, melt-in-your-mouth pot roast with creamy mashed potatoes, or even decadent slow cooker cheesecakes. The possibilities are endless! I even use mine at Christmas for a huge pot of hot chocolate when everyone is outside building snowmen.
Learning the Ropes: A Small Investment for Big Rewards
Sure, there's a learning curve – mastering the various functions of both the Instant Pot and Crock Pot might take a smidge of practice. And while the Instant Pot can't replicate the crispy perfection of fried chicken, and the Crockpot won't whip up a meal in minutes, the sheer versatility and time-saving magic of these appliances outweigh those minor limitations.
Embrace the Appliance Revolution: Conquer Meals and the Heat
So, ditch the heat and embrace the Instant Pot and Crock Pot revolution! Explore a world of culinary possibilities, conquer mealtimes with ease, and keep your cool this summer. These countertop companions aren't just appliances, they're your new best friends, ready to help you create delicious memories without breaking a sweat (or breaking the air conditioner). With these dynamic duos by your side, summer cooking can be a breeze, leaving you more time to soak up the sunshine and enjoy the season!
I like this InstaPot for its convenience and size.

Sweet Memories, Preserved: A Lifetime of Canning Love
Canning Up Love: Sweet Memories in Every Jar
This week let's take a trip down memory lane with a taste of summer! Canning has been a constant companion in my life, ever since I was a little girl learning the ropes from my mom in the sunny South.
Fifty years later, the aroma of those vibrant red strawberries bubbling away in a giant pot still lingers in my memory. Back then, my job was to hull the green tops and patiently skim the froth from the bubbling strawberry jam. That sweet fragrance saturating my mom's cozy kitchen was pure summer magic.
Every year, we'd visit my mee-maw in Kentucky. Her sprawling white house boasted a wrap-around porch and a kitchen that would make any modern cook drool. Imagine tall cabinets reaching the ceiling, their glass doors revealing rows of preserves, jellies, and jams like a dazzling display of jewels. It was like glittering sunshine and summer captured in a jar.
My favorite treat then, and still to this day, is warm biscuits slathered with velvety blackberry jam. While I never got the chance to can alongside my mee-maw, I spent countless hours exploring her fruitful garden, igniting a lifelong love affair with preserving the summer bounty.
Speaking of bounty, my schedule this week is bursting with summer flavors! Blueberry picking is on the agenda, both for jam and for refreshing summer smoothies and desserts. Next up are peaches – I'll be peeling, slicing, and freezing them in pie pans so I’ll have a taste of summer in the winter, alongside a batch of mouthwatering peach jam.
Though my trusty water bath canning pot has been diligently serving me for over 30 years since my wedding day, I've recently upgraded my funnel and jar tongs – those new ones are a dream to hold!
I'm also a seasoned thrift store pro, always on the lookout for bargain jars. In fact, if any friends find themselves with an overflowing stash, I'm happy to take them off their hands!
Ready to create some sweet memories of your own? Time to roll up our sleeves and get canning!

Love organic fruits but hate watching them go bad? Don't worry, we've got you covered! Here's a quick guide to storing your organic favorites so you can enjoy their deliciousness for longer.

Wash Away Worries! The Simple Guide to Clean Produce ✨
Don't let a little dirt stop you from enjoying the goodness of fresh fruits and veggies! Here's a quick guide to washing them the right way:
Turns out, science says a good rinse is all you need! Forget the vinegar and baking soda (for now ).
Rinse is King: Run cold water over your produce for at least 15 seconds, giving those firmer items a gentle rub.
**Scrub-a-dub-dub! ** For fruits and veggies with a rough exterior like melons or potatoes, grab a clean vegetable brush.
Leafy Green Love: Separate those leaves, soak them in a cool water bath for a few minutes, then rinse each leaf individually.
**Dry it Out! ** Pat your produce dry with a clean paper towel to reduce bacteria growth.
Bonus Tip! Wash before you peel to avoid transferring dirt and bacteria from the outside in.
Plain water is generally the most effective and safest way to clean most produce. Now go forth and conquer that crisper drawer!

Sippin' Green: Small Steps for a Big Impact!
Going green can feel like climbing a mountain, but guess what? We can conquer it one step (or sip!) at a time! John Wooden said "Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do." Even small changes, like ditching plastic water bottles, make a big difference.
Today, I'm trading plastic for a reusable stainless-steel bottle filled with filtered water from home. Hydration with a healthy dose of eco-friendliness? Yes, please! What small step are YOU taking to be more sustainable?
Let's share the green love! Drop your eco-tips in the comments below.
