Based on an old sketch about a very silly Discord discussion with @storyknitter, that started with her joking about Theron being an undercover electrician planting spy devices in someone's home, and then somehow literal plants got involved.
(aka -- I just wanted to try out a new lineart techinque, but didn't want to bother sketching anything new so I just resurrected this. Art talk under the cut)
I finished watching an open tab I had forgotten about for several months on some quick and dirty line art tips in which you use the border effect inside of Clip Studio to quickly block out shapes and create line art. Wanting to try it out on something, and not in the mood to sketch, I went and found this extremely silly sketch I did on Discord a few months back. Like this sketch, I didn't spend really want to spend too much time in making things super pretty, just wanted to see how quickly I could finish.
Conclusion: I like it! Need to mess around with the anti-aliasing settings a bit more so that when removing the white color and converting the lines to vector (mostly because i wanted some latitude to adjust the line width) it doesn't get quite so crunchy and jagged. Something you can see along the lines around the "flower". If you're using Clip Studio Paint and want a new line art method, worth giving it an experiment.
#greyart#i don't know if i really want to use the fandom tags for this#as i was just farting around#and the anatomy and everything is wonky#lmao#i was just doing this as an experiment#i kind of forgot it was thursday while doing this too XD

Attempted to do a quicker painting/redraw of an older piece of art.
2022 vs 2018
#greyart#my mistake#was not stopping to find good references#and trying to do most of this without reference#sorry you look like a giraffe grey :(#maybe i'll do another shot at this later after working on a few more studies#oc: greyias highwind

One Week Portrait (Spring 2022) - Day 5/Final
And we arrive at the final iteration for this round of One Week Portrait. I’m very happy with how this one came out, and had a lot of fun experimenting with a few different techniques (and I only crashed Clip Studio like, all of once with my five million layers).
And (under the cut) just for comparison’s sake, the progression of this year’s pieces, as well as previous entries:

One Week Portrait (Spring 2022) - Day 4
The last two days are almost always my favorite for this challenge, because it’s where everything comes together. I had a lot of fun with this one, bringing all of the detailing back, and for the most part, have been three default tools within Clip Studio for everything, including the hair: soft airbrush, opaque watercolor, and the blender tool, and I really like the painterly look that’s emerging from that.
#Paintable’s One Week Portrait#one week portrait#wip#like i’ve been using the airbrush to lay down a shape in shadows#then I’ve been going over with the watercolor brush and adding definition and other colors#and then just blending until it looks right#and i’m just digging the way it’s looking

One Week Portrait (Spring 2022) - Day 3
Day 3 is where I always hate everything, because rendering is a bitch and will never not be one. I’m also cheating a little and straying off the path, as I’m using some of Marc Brunet’s techniques for the coloring phase here, which is why the colors have suddenly shifted so wildly. It’ll all come back once I do another highlight pass.
#Paintable’s One Week Portrait#one week portrait#wip#tomorrow is detailing day#so it'll all come back then

One Week Portrait (Spring 2022) - Day 2
Clip Studio Paint makes laying in flats so easy and quick, I love it. Also I have to say, laying in the shadows and highlight shapes went a lot faster this time around. While I was still using the reference to double-check, I was mostly laying it down without having to rely on the references I generated. I’ll count that as a win for progress.
#Paintable’s One Week Portrait#one week portrait#wip#seriously though#marc brunet's youtube channel is SUPER helpful#his videos on lighting and shading were one of the first ones that actually made it 'click' for me#i am definitely cheating today and starting out rendering early#mostly because it takes me for-ev-er

One Week Portrait (Spring 2022) - Day 1
It’s that time again! Paintable is running it’s One Week Portrait Challenge again, and after failing rather spectacularly last round, which was quite humbling, I have hopefully picked a better reference this time around. I guess we’ll see at the end of the week how this turns out.
Previous One Week Portraits: Summer 2018 | Summer 2019 | Fall 2019 | Spring 2020 | Fall 2020 | Fall 2021
#Paintable’s One Week Portrait#one week portrait#wip#(ah 2021 my giant step backwards)#(honestly i just chose an angle i didn't realize was so challenging)#(the colors and whatnot turned out okay)

I decided I needed to practice some more portraits and expressions, so I borrowed some of my friends’ babies as subjects. Decided I would give each of these the whole paintover process, but that’s taking a little longer than expected, but here’s the full set in all their glory.
Row 1: @storyknitter, @grumpyhedgehog, @confettininjabean Row 2: @andveryginger, @elveny, @rinskiroo Row 3: @keldae, @stephyhimemademe, @thewriterandmuse
#sketches#wip#greyart#friends ocs#i'll post the individual paintings in all their glory once they're done#it's funny#the sketching portion is now the most stressful/least fun part of the process for me right now#but i'm having a blast shading and painting and coloring#i mean#i think that's partially because the sketch is the foundation#and if you don't fix it there#it's more difficult to fix down the line
