any musical recs?

hiii, thanks for asking!! this is a bit long, sorry

well of course i'm going to recommend the lightning thief musical and epic. since we're talking about greek mythology inspired musicals, i've heard hadestown is really good though I haven't gotten the time to listen to it yet :(

janani k jha who played aphrodite in epic is writing a musical about mary shelley which you can follow her process on her socials. it's hard for brown people specifically to pursue arts because of expectations from society and narrow minded parents, and though janani may or may not be going through that, I'm sure if she succeeds she'd definitely be a role model for many! and I've seen many small artists online making musicals on their socials, so definitely look out for them too!

if you're a harry potter fan who is searching for ways to engage with the fandom in ways that don't benefit jkr, boy do I have something for you!! the very potter trilogy is a set of three stage musicals with videos available in playlists on the starkids youtube channel! it's a parody of the harry potter books made by a few college students, not in any way associated with rowling! it's vulgar and gay (the voldemort x quirrel ship gets you invested more than you should) and SO SO FUNNY the humour is a BIG highlight!!

it is the definition of unhinged and on crack and you will never forget it I swear

but at the same time it is similar to the lightning thief musical in the way that it's intensely warm and nostalgic

starkid has a bunch of other amazing musicals, and now they have a pretty big fanbase so yeah, check them out 😅

wicked is really great, I saw the first movie and loved it, but you can listen to the og soundtrack too! also the mean girls musical goes hard too (but DONT watch the musical movie or listen to the soundtrack!)

if you like the campy fun slightly cringe disney channel style of musicals, there's julie and the phantoms on netflix! has a really cool plot and loveable characters!

i noticed you like taylor swift!! i do too!! there's a 5 minute youtube video called cinderswift which is just basically taylor swift songs in the story of cinderella. in the first minute cinderella starts singing the song mean. it's surprisingly well made, but i digress since it's not actually a musical

so yeah, that's it! just realised all of these are popular musicals and you've probably listened to them all. I'm so sorry.

but in all honesty, I am not the best person to ask this question too 😅 if you want more recommendations, i'd suggest you talk to my friend @finleyforevermore !! he knows lots of good musicals and has given me lots of cool recommendations !!

i LOVE your characterization of percy in this!!

not many people in the fandom realise how insane it is that he published two books before high school ended. I also love how you acknowledged he is an introvert and that he would do advocacy work with grover and rachel.

(also you having doubts in the middle about how the american college system works and basing hcs based on movies is real)

This started out as a hc and then I took it and ran.

Full disclaimer, I have not read the new pro trilogy about the college rec letter adventures. I do not think this is necessary as im not actually talking much about them.

Okay first of all I do know about the "this is your debt for existing" bs and if I was percy I would tell the gods to go screw themselves and never lift a finger for them again.

second of all I understand the appeal of NRU because of the safety it provides. that is the only counter argument I will accept.

Like okay, maybe not an Ivy League, but come on. The dude is smart!

And we know he’s on the swim team, so he for sure could’ve gotten a scholarship. (Do American universities look at swimming as a scholarship sport? They can in this world)

Also I dont know much about the American college admission essays, but one girl wrote about her parents dying I think? Like hating the letter 'S' So like it’s really random and personalised?

Dude’s literally famous. He’s known to have been kidnapped at 12 and was the ‘hero’ of the situation by getting into the ‘gunfight’ with Ares. Also he’s an insane story teller. You cant tell me he wouldn’t write a hell of an admissions essay about that.

AND he’s a published author. All while he’s in high school. I feel like universities should be knocking down his door begging him to study there.

Hes actually got an insane application. And okay, he might not have the best marks. But that is because what we've seen in majority of the series is him not being taken seriously because of his disabilities, and not being given any accomodations. You just know after Paul got involved, things got better for him. And you know once he got some real support, teachers would right him such good rec letters for a hell of a lot less than the gods are asking for.

Also! Percy is a talker. he may be an introvert, but he's a people person all the same. He knows about to talk to people, and get the outcome he wants. And he's got personality, and he's pretty easy on the eyes, so ive heard. Not to objectify or anything. I think he would actually kill an interview if he had to do one. (this ive only seen on tv, I have no idea if its real or not)

Paired up with whatever advocacy work he does with Rachel and grover. (you know he does) Hes actually such a well rounded student.

To sum up:

percy would have a hell of a college application

he could probably talk his way into getting enrolled in an interview

he would get better and easier rec letters from mortal teachers

he should tell the gods and their extra conditions to F off and pursue a college with real life credentials that the rest of the mortal world knows exists.

I got this incredible plot twist idea for the story, and when I enacted the scene out in my head and at the same time the character revealed the plot twist, THUNDER RUMBLED OUTSIDE MY WINDOW

In another random burst of creativity, i wrote one more annabeth poem cuz I love getting inside her head. This one's about her falling in love with percy-

I seem to find solace in the sea

I'm not sure what it is,

But I'm sure he can't see.

I tried to lock it away, thinking,

"There're people better than me out there."

But what about the way,

He can always make me smile?

What about the times,

He's been scared for my life?

Even as a child,

I was quite enchanted,

By young-hearted bravery,

And the little glances.

And even now I'm attracted

To the unfaltering loyalty,

And the quick-witted responses.

If I let myself dream,

I see a mist covered scene,

Of me in his arms,

In this world in all its charms.

And so I took a brave step,

I let myself feel.

For once I put faith

To make it become real.

So when I saw

the green-eyed smile,

I knew it was more

Than just friendly alliance.

Something my mother thinks,

No one requires.

Only when all the trouble was gone,

Was when I could truly admire,

The son of Poseidon,

And the love he inspires.
