fucking hate it when i'm reading a fanfic and tim explains to dick what ptsd means as if that man didn't have a degree on psychology by this point GOD an important aspect of dick's character is that he is great at reading people and figuring out their weak points and that he doesn't think manipulating others is wrong as long as it serves the greater good (ring any bells? yeah) i think he fucking knows what gaslighting means anyways stop making dick stupid especially in the emotional intelligence department i'll kill you

anyway. i think the issue with characterization of dick's anger often comes down to people perceiving anger as something that exists in opposition to or to the exclusion of empathy and kindness and love. dick gets angry BECAUSE he is empathetic and kind and loving. dick occasionally fears that he's going to break The Rule BECAUSE he is grieving victims so deeply and has so much empathy for them and their families. dick gets pissed off at bruce for not trusting him or for bruce not taking care of himself BECAUSE he loves bruce. this is also a thing people don't necessarily get about bruce which is funny because bruce and dick are as always perfectly matched <3

Something that I think is so important about Cass and Dick is how they're affected by expectations. It's a shame so many people miss it. I don't mean Dick trying to be Batman and Cass trying to be Batgirl even though that does play a part in it all.
Dick is loved by the hero community, he's seen by others as what a hero should be, so many others look up to him. He's charming, a great leader, excellent fighter but that's not good enough.
Cass is one of the best fighters in the world, she's the strongest hero in Gotham. She's done so much for the city, others look up to her. She's witty, nimble, strong, determined and one of the best but that's not good enough.
They're both extremely skilled people and those that carry on their legacy feel helpless in trying to fill their shoes. You see them struggle in trying to live up to the expectations they set. They see Cass and Dick as nearly perfect but that's not all it's cut out to be.
Cass and Dick show what it's like on the other side, what people tend not to realize. They have others approval and respect, in others eyes they've made it but they don't see it that way, in their eyes it'll never be enough.
Both of them push themselves to the brink, they work themselves to death to save one more life, one more family, one more community. They have to save as many people as possible because they're depending on them.
They work themselves to the brink because failure means death. Even if there was no possible way to save someone Dick will convince himself that it's his fault, that he could have done something. Cass will convince herself that any death that she could have prevented is her fault, is blood on her hands.
If they aren't out there saving people then their deaths fall on their hands. To Dick failure is inaction, if he's not doing every thing he can then someone he loves will die. To Cass failure is action, if she can't save someone then she might aswell have killed them herself like she did all those years ago.
They hold themselves to an unobtainable standard. They have to always do more, they always have to be better, they cannot fail because failure means death, not only to the people they failed to save but to themselves.
People look up to them so they need to be better to be as perfect as others think they are. They're climbing for a pedestal that they will never be able to reach. But they try, they try with all their might because the only other option is death.
They'll convince themselves that others don't think they're enough and so they'll pretend they are as they push themselves to the limit. They are tearing themselves apart.
It's a viscous cycle with no way out, they're killing themselves but failure also leads to death. They raise the bar for others with every step they make, leaving others with even bigger shoes to fill.
It will ever be enough, Dick will never be enough, Cass will never be enough, Steph nor any of the other Robins will ever be enough. Nothing ever will be and that's the sad truth of it all.
No matter what end you're on you crumble to expectations all the same.

the insane experience of missing a fictional character . like you can always go back and reread the book , replay the game , rewatch the show or movie , you can always go back & see them , but you can never experience them & their story for the first time again . its absurd to miss them because they'll always be there , but you'll miss when there were still new things for them to say .
for a small time they were real & growing and changing and you hung onto every new word, but now all they can do is repeat the same story forever&ever & they're not real anymore because you know everything they're going to do. & you miss them. its fucked man...

if anything i find bruce wayne to be the ultimate nepo adult because there’s no way taking in dick grayson (newly orphaned trapeze prodigy child star of the world) didn’t immediately improve his pr situation since not only did this orphan come with media training he also came with unbeatable charisma charm and cuteness

(4+1) 4 times Grayson has almost died and one time he actually did🗣️
This looked cooler in my head ngl, and you can tell I lost motivation time to time.
All of these moments are canon but slightly made more dramatic:
Forever evil #1
Nightwing (2016) #40
Grayson #5
Nightwing (2016) #25
Forever evil #6

UGH. what if u took in a tiny bright child and loved him so much you literally broke apart when you couldnt have him anymore and then he comes home and works with you and yyou get to have him and you miss him when he is right next to you and you love him so much you cant talk about it and then he gets shot in front of you when you are having a good day and he is cracking jokes and you are laughing except now hes bleeding out in your arms losing consciousness and all you can do is try to hold him together with your fingers and you are covered in his blood and he is covered in your regret and then he is lifeless in a cold sterile room for a month and you cannot do anything about it and. and then he isnt there anymore. and he's gone

lots of real problems with n52 but on god my biggest gripe will always be that we didn’t get a funeral for dick after spyral like can you imagine bruce wayne having to give the performance of a lifetime that isn’t really a performance because all his love is always grief. he saw his firstborn die and then he had to symbolically kill his son again for that unforgivable failure and now there will always be a grave with no body between them
