i seem to be having a problem with endings, because i wish it was longer, just a few episodes. although the last chapter ties all loose ends satisfactorily, i would have liked to read camelot's darkest hour from arthur's perspective with the new found information.

i have just finished this and i have several complaints to make!!!!! i am infuriated that i read 350 PAGES, expecting, hoping for a happy ending but there isn't one!!! not in the traditional way, or in any way that would make me happy!!! the end is ambiguous, the fic makes a full circle and we are left with a major middle finger.

the author says that it's extremely slow burn and it is, we are fed only with the crumbs of romance for a long, long 300 pages. however, the characters are well written - never ooc. in addition, despite the fact that it focuses on canon events, you are left wondering what will merlin do with the knowledge he gathered in the previous timeline. also, the development of merthur's relationship never seems forced or rushed, i guess that is to be expected when they spend 300 fucking pages to get together. but this is not me complaining, many thanks to the author for this. i really love slow burn and i love time travel fics, so this was perfect for me.

I would have been much happier if i just haven't read the last 10 or so pages, this is where it went to shit for me, but the remaining 340 are really good.

8/10. there are small grammar mistakes and inconsistencies with the time travel, and i can't see myself as an authority to judge the plot, however it's ability to make me feel makes up for all of the mistakes it might have.

Moments later Arthur awakens, his wound healed. Arthur doesn't realize Merlin kissed him, he just thinks he healed him somehow. At first Merlin believes he healed Arthur with his kiss, but soon he starts to suspect that what he passed to Arthur was, in fact, his immortality. Merlin worries Arthur will be angry when he finds out and deem this trespass unforgivable, an utter violation of his person, for who would want to live forever? And surely, if Arthur did want to live forever, he'd choose Gwen or even one of his knights with which to share that never-ending journey.

this fic made me tear up. the repetition and the mirroring of the questions were so emotional,,, also the fact that it focused on their intense friendship rather than romance made it better in my opinion, bc even though i love merlin and arthur as a pairing, they were best friends before anything else and that will always come first, especially in a situations like this.

i am rewatching merlin and i don't know how i didn't realise how unrealistically oblivious they made arthur. like how come he never even once suspected merlin?? they are in a dire situation, merlin is fucking shouting incantations in the back, and arthur is like "i really charmed them to death huh must be my prince training" like HOW??? is he deaf? is he blind? does he have dumb bitch disease??? throughout the five seasons he doesn't even have an inkling and THERE ISN'T A PLAUSIBLE EXPLANATION FOR THIS.

Hi, I was wondering if you had any headcanons of Lancelot being alive when Mordred joins the knight because I don't have any doubts that he would tell Merlin off for being judgemental. Therefore creating a good relationship between the three of them making Merlin and Lance semi-parents to Mordred.

I’m convinced they killed off Lancelot because he would have solved all the problems in the show. You’re absolutely right he wouldn’t have put up with that bs if he had lived. Here are all my thoughts:

- Lancelot is really the only person outside of Gaius who Merlin can fully explain himself to. So they bring Mordred back to Camelot with them and Lancelot can immediately tell something is off. He asks Merlin what’s going on and you get this...

Merlin: he’s going to try and kill Arthur.

Lancelot: What? He said that?

Merlin: Uh, well... No. The dragon did back when he was ten.

Lancelot: ...what?

Merlin: He was a druid kid that we saved years ago. Kilgharrah said if he grew up he would kill Arthur. I did try to trip him up one time to get him killed, but it didn’t wor-

Lancelot: w h a t

Merlin: yeah and now he’s grown so...

Lancelot: I’m going to kick your stupid ass back to Ealdor wtf is wrong with you

- Merlin isn’t easily convinced but there is no way Lancelot is going to let him bully a child so he decides the best thing to do is be as upfront as possible with Mordred. He goes up to him immediately and is like ‘yo. I’m Emrys’ bestie so I guess we’re allies now’ and Mordred is kinda thrilled that someone who knows about druid heritage is nice to him

- As Lancelot gets to know Mordred better he asks to be introduced to some other druids who know about prophecy. Mordred is confused but figures Lancelot is trustworthy bc he’s a friend of Emrys so he’s just like ‘aite, here are my peeps’ and Lancelot gets to have a long discussion with them about how prophecy works.

- He gets back and just... Drags Merlin into an empty room to tell him all he’s learned. It essentially boils down to ‘yeah, Mordred COULD kill Arthur but it isn’t guaranteed’. However, Merlin isn’t convinced because he’s still pretty threatened by that sliver of chance.

- Lancelot figures they just need to spend some time together so he just goes around locking them in rooms or sending Mordred to keep Merlin company on errands. At one point, Mordred gets a quest and Lancelot manages to get Arthur to order Merlin to tag along.

- It takes A LOT of these trips but eventually Merlin begins to warm up to Mordred... A little. Just a bit. He won’t admit he kind of likes the guy. Lancelot still is trying to reason with Merlin during this time.

Lancelot: he swore an oath not to hurt Arthur. Why can’t you -

Merlin: his oath doesn’t mean shit

Lancelot: why must you make things so HARD?!

- Eventually Lancelot starts inviting Mordred to their magical bullshit adventures and Merlin is OFFENDED by the audacity but Lancelot is super adamant about him joining so he begrudgingly allows him ‘in order to keep an eye on things’.

- Mordred is a fucking disaster.

- like, Merlin is slightly swayed into thinking this kid could never kill Arthur because he’s gonna kill himself first. Lancelot is HORRIFIED.

- Mordred is running around trying to cast spells that are backfiring left and right, he’s picking fights with monsters, he’s using magic behind Arthur’s back, etc... all while being the happiest kid in existence “KEEPING ARTHUR ALIVE IS SO MUCH FUN! EMRYS! IT IS SO MUCH FUN!”

Merlin: how can anyone be so stupid and reckless?

Lancelot: have you met yourself?

Merlin: unnecessary but okay

- eventually Merlin forgets he’s supposed to hate Mordred because he’s so busy trying to keep Mordred from doing dumb shit that would reveal them. Lancelot is slightly regretting his decision in involving Mordred because like... He’s a teenager who is trying to impress Merlin. That’s obviously not going to go well.

- Lancelot also ropes Mordred into playing pranks on Merlin because 1) all that chaotic energy needs to be directed somewhere 2) Merlin deserves it 3) He thinks it will loosen Merlin up a little

- This leads to Lancelot and Mordred becoming THE pranking duo of the century. They don’t just stop at Merlin. No, Gwaine is getting pranked. Arthur is getting pranked. Leon, Percival, Elyan, Gaius, Geoffrey - nobody is safe.

- Merlin is the only one who knows it is Lancelot and Mordred. Everyone else is convinced Morgana is behind some of it.

- Eventually Merlin is completely won over by Mordred after another veil-type situation arises. You know how it goes:

Arthur: I will sacrifice myself

Merlin: No, I will sacrifice myself

Lancelot: No, I will sacrifice myself

Mordred: ...NO, I WILL SACRIFICE MYSELF

- It ends up being a test situation like with the unicorn so nobody needs to actually die, but Merlin talks to Mordred afterwards about it and Mordred explains “Of course, I would die for Arthur because he is my king... And I would die for you because you are the leader of my people... But I would die for Lancelot because he is my friend and accepted me when no one else would.”

- And that gets Merlin right in the feels because he sees how much he and Mordred have in common at that moment. In fact, Lancelot was one of the few people in Merlin’s life that accepted him when no one else would... And Merlin realizes that perhaps what makes Lancelot so noble and brave is that he is willing to look past what the world says about a person and draw his own conclusions on who they are. 

- So, finally, Merlin starts being 100% faithful on letting Mordred be involved in their lives without all the askance. Mordred is pretty excited by this and decides to invite Merlin on his and Lancelot’s pranking spree.

- Mordred and Merlin use their telepathy to also fuck around with Lancelot.

- Lancelot will stay up late with Mordred to go over knight training stuff and catch him up on what he’s missed when he’s out learning magic with Merlin

- They’re dorks so they come up with a team name. They can’t ever decide on one though so it changes every time a new problem pops up. Mordred likes being called ‘Knights of Emrys’ but Merlin thinks that’s stupid. He prefers to call them ‘Destiny Destroyers’ (Mordred thinks that’s stupid). Lancelot is a simple man and goes with ‘Team Camelot’ (Merlin and Mordred think that’s stupid).

- We all know Lancelot is the Mom FriendTM so that means he’s constantly reminding Mordred and Merlin to eat, get rest, take care of yourselves, etc... Mordred and Merlin bitch to one another about this constantly.

Mordred: I’m an adult. I don’t need to be reminded to drink water!

Merlin: Hey. I’m the most powerful being in existence and he doesn’t think I can remember to eat.

Lancelot: I know you’re both talking crap about me in your heads. Also, it’s like 4 in the morning go to bed you goddamn lunatics.

- Whenever Mordred is in his first tournamnet, Merlin and Lancelot AGGRESSIVELY cheer him on and yell at his competitors for being to violent with someone so young. When Lancelot is in a tournament, Mordred and Merlin subtly try to use magic to tip the scales in Lance’s favor.

- Also, Mordred and Lancelot are Merlin’s biggest magic supporters:

Mordred: Beautiful incantation. Amazing form. I’m stunned. Glorious.

Lancelot: I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a beautiful spell in my entire life. Do it again. Do it until I die.

Merlin: ... I... I just lit a fire...

- Honestly... Camelot doesn’t stand a chance.

Meanwhile, Merlin thinks the newest servant is a mess.

Arthur learns what it is like to be a servant and learns some interesting thing about his own servant.

as you might have noticed, i am pretty much immersed in the merlin fandom and fics these days, HOWEVER, i can be considered kinda new here. i watched merlin 6-7 years ago but i am not a native english speaker, so my english wasn't adequate then. (this explanation is going somewhere so bare with me) i haven't read many fics about these two, so i can't say that i have favorites yet. but luckily, i might just have found one!!! yayyy!!!

i loved this so much!!! i prefer the canon era fics but most of the ones i read were kinda boring? they were either ooc or about the canon events with a slight twist. i enjoyed them too but they just weren't what i was looking for.

this one has a different arc where we get to read arthur pretending to be a servant, him getting to see the sides of merlin he never thought he would, meanwhile trying to solve a problem. i don't want to give much away, lest they spoil your experience if you were to read, but i feel like this is what we deserved in the first place.

a beautiful mixture of angst and fluff with a well thought out plot. also, the romance is there if you squint. 8/10

ps: it has a wip sequel, only a chapter left. it was updated in november 2019, so i don't know if it's abandoned. i'll probably read it.
