kissing wealthy buttcheeks
Recently, I stumbled upon a popular TikTok series called “Rich People Who Rich Right”. I thought: what does that even mean? Is there even a “right” way to be rich?

Even if you want to “not be political” and ignore the weird socio-political optics of flexing wealth and the people who admire it, can we at least agree that this is just a really lame thing to do? Glazing this hard on someone who has done nothing but be born into wealth is kinda crazy.
I’ve scrolled through the accounts of people who make and comment on these videos. They’re shopping at ZARA to try and replicate the “quiet luxury” look, they’re going to the places their favorite it-girl just visited, they’re buying all the “right” brands like Rhode and Summer Fridays. I can’t definitively say they’re unsatisfied, and they may not be, but it seems like a very unsatisfactory mode of existence: following the leader, constantly reaching for that gold-encrusted carrot the it-girl influencers dangle in their faces.
In this piece, we talk about the weird culture around worshipping the wealthy, perform a media literacy exercise, and even defend the art of fashion and The Met Gala. Click below to read! :)
