before tfatws comes out, i just want to get this out there (a rant):
disclaimer: i am not hating on bucky barnes or sebastian stan.
the show is called falcon and the winter soldier. it’s not called the bucky show. it’s not called the winter soldier show. i’ve seen too much of this out there even before the show has come out, where people have been complaining about the lack of lines bucky has, or how it feels to them like sam’s getting the focus of the show.
sam is currently one of the most visible (read: only) black superheroes in the mcu, as anthony mackie has touched on in multiple interviews. as of right now, he has a responsibility and a job that bucky does not, so the question that basically amounts to “why’s the black guy getting so much screentime” is tone deaf and appalling.
and to the people who direct these sentiments at anthony mackie as an actor: anthony mackie is finally getting the recognition he deserves, with the support of all his castmates (including sebastian stan), and it is not the place of primarily white fans to tell him he doesn’t deserve the spotlight just as much as sebastian for whatever reason, however dirty you feel bucky has been done in the mcu.
this breaks my heart. he has done nothing to feel this way aside from having mainly white costars, but that pattern should not continue for this show as well.
to continue the tangent of “bucky deserved the shield” or “sam isn’t worthy of the shield” or any of that to anthony mackie’s face, to disregard and downplay his so far incredible portrayal of sam wilson, a character that has been canonically disregarded by people to the point where most of america united behind the “not my captain america” movement (which is likely something he will struggle with in this show as well), only proves the purpose and validity of his role.
so when the show comes out, i want to see everyone put some respect on samuel thomas wilson’s name. i don’t want to see sam sidelined for yet another white man, not when this is the show that was built to put him in the spotlight. i don’t want to see sam slander when he’s “taking away bucky’s spotlight.” they are sharing the spotlight. sam has as much of a right to it as bucky. and that is a fact.
i yield my time. <3

Revolutionary (A Stucky x Reader series) [Chapter Three]
Chapter Two link
Chapter Three: New Americana
After the meeting, you left with Steve and Bucky. The two of them lived in the same building but in a place slightly bigger and on a higher floor than yours. Even though the Bourgeoisie was the top of the line, even the Proletariat existed with a kind of hierarchy. Naturally, it was a patriarchal society. One where women like you were always left drawing the short straw. Luckily, that wasn’t a system Steve and Bucky believed in. They saw your strength of will and knew you were made of something else.
Their dual loft was on the seventh floor of the building. The door opened into a living area and on each side-wall was a flight of stairs that led to their balconied bedrooms which were across from each other. Steve’s was on the left and his wall was littered with multiple works of art, some his and others just ones he admired. Bucky’s side was more of your typical male bedroom: slightly messy with the bed unmade and few items of clothing lying about. The back wall was completely made of glass and housed a small lounging area that overlooked the city skyline. In the front right corner was a small kitchenette and on the left was the boys’ tiny office area where Steve did his drawings and Bucky did all of his work projects.
You followed the boys to their apartment and once they opened the doors, you immediately rushed to the couch at the back wall facing the skyline. As you reached it, you launched yourself over the back and landed on the seat. It was slightly worn and not the most comfortable, but any place in the company of Steve and Bucky felt like home to you. Both of them chuckled at your antics but followed you regardless. Bucky reached the couch first and lifted your legs so that he could sit down before lowering them into his lap. Steve sat on the armrest next to your head and softly ran his fingers through your hair.
You hummed at the feeling and wrapped your arms around his waist, pulling him closer to you until he’d all but fallen onto the seat of the couch and you rested your head in his lap. He laughed softly, and you giggled as you felt the vibrations against your face.
Soon the laughter died and the three of you faded into a companionable silence. You were looking out at the skyline, relaxing even deeper into your boys as you felt your mind drift. Steve’s hand stroking your hair let you slip further into the trance of the daydream you were in.
“What are you thinking about, darlin’?” Steve asked, shaking you from your reverie.
“Our history, well the history of this city. I know we were all told these stories since birth, but it still makes me wonder about how everything came to be, you know?” You replied.
“Well my parents were both historians before they passed, and I went to live with Bucky and his family. They had a much more detailed version. I know I don’t talk about them often, so I probably never told you the story, but I can tell it to you now if you want?” He suggested.
“Yes, please.” You chirped.
“Here we go again…” Bucky mumbled, rolling his eyes.
“What?” You laughed.
“I’m just not fond of this story, any version of it. It’s quite depressing if you think about it–all selfish people creating injustice. But I guess it’s good for us to revisit it now, considering what we’re about to do.” He explained, and you nodded. Steve took that as his opportunity to start.
“So, we all know the big names: Howard Stark, Peggy Carter and Johann Schmidt. And, there’s the story of how Howard and Peggy saved the city from Johann’s crazy beliefs, but it’s actually a lot more detailed than that. You see, Johann was the governor at the time, and his plans for the city were completely totalitarian. If you thought the Proletariat and Bourgeoisie concept was bad, Johann’s plan was a hundred times worse.
“He wanted complete control of the city’s money flow with power over people’s careers and career choices. He disguised this by exposing all of the city’s flaws at the time and he provided solutions that seemed entirely plausible. But, being involved in politics at the time, Howard and Peggy weren’t completely convinced.
“Howard had just engineered an efficient countermeasure to what was a pressing energy crisis in the city at the time, and Peggy’s charm and intelligence helped her work her way into Schmidt’s inner circle. She found his plans and distributed them throughout the city. Johann was so close to instigating his plan, he was a breath away from total control of the city. Had it not been for Howard and Peggy, our lives could’ve been much worse.
“Now I know this all sounds like a happy ending, but when Johann went to prison for conspiring against the greater good of the city, he still had a following that supported his plan. This following somehow grew secretly within Howard and Peggy’s party. After many successful terms and a city that was governed under rules of equality and justice, one of Johann’s followers, Jasper Sitwell, finally came into power.
“He knew he couldn’t bring Schmidt’s plans completely into play, or he’d go to jail too. So, he slowly started introducing the mechanisms that would grow into the Proletariat and the Bourgeoisie. He told the public that Howard Stark’s crisis countermeasure wasn’t an infinite solution–”
“Which it was.” Bucky interjected, annoyance thick in his tone.
“It was,” Steve agreed. “but he convinced them all that they needed to start rationing. Because of the return of the energy crisis, all production slowed until there was barely enough of anything–food, running water, electricity–for the city’s population to survive. A lot of the weak didn’t make it but, for the most part, the population pushed on. This formed the Proletariat.
“Sitwell had a select few families that he deemed worthy of not living a hard life. There were a few of them, but the ones we know include the Starks, Romanovs, Laufeysons, Odinsons, Bartons, Furys, Pierces and Rumlows. Over the years, the list grew, but it’s still a tiny number compared to the rest of the population.
“Also, regardless of the lack of energy crisis, the people who’ve continued to be in power have been so callous that they haven’t bothered to even look at, let alone improve, our worsening conditions. So, I understand our cause. We need to change, and I know you’ll be good at leading that.” Steve finished, looking down at you lovingly.
“Thanks for telling me, Steve.” You whispered, sitting up so that you could properly see his face. You gazed back at him and he leaned closer to you, capturing your lips softly. You hummed against the warmth and light pressure of his lips, leaning in further to deepen the kiss.
Bucky cleared his throat and you pulled away from Steve, laughing lightly. He looked like a child with his brows furrowed and lips pulled into a pout. He had his arms crossed over his chest in a mock expression of defiance.
“You know, I’ve been feeling a bit ignored all day. First you walk in with Loki looking like you really let him have his way with you, and now here you are kissing Steve right in front of me and I’m just left here wondering why I’m not getting any attention.” Bucky complained., causing Steve to throw his head back in a wild and bellowing laugh.
“Well, c’mere then.” You smiled, leaning closer to Bucky.
Bucky gripped your hips roughly and pulled you straight into him. You stumbled into his chest with a gasp and your head rested against his shoulder before you brought it up, trailing soft kisses from his neck up until you reached his lips. Bucky didn’t waste a moment, kissing you deeply as soon as you were close enough. Things were always hard and rough and fast with him. He didn’t spend time with any of the fluffy bits involved in a romance. He never thought there was any time for that when you constantly had to fight for the things you needed. You’d gotten used to this behaviour from him, in fact it was something you’d grown to love about him. He reminded you of everything you could still love about this city.
His mouth moved languidly against yours as his hands moved against you in the ways he knew you liked. His one arm moved behind your neck, his hand tangling in your hair while the metal one moved down your waist to your thigh and stroked before squeezing it, coaxing a moan from you. Steve’s hands joined Bucky’s in exploring your body, and from this start you knew it was going to be another passionate night with you boys.

Revolutionary (A Stucky x Reader series) [Chapter Two]
A/N: So I know this is a Stucky x Reader series, but that will start up in the next chapter. For now, have a tiny bit of spice between the reader and Loki. Next chapter coming soon!
Chapter One link
Chapter Two: Hold Me Down
“You ready for the meeting love?” Loki asked as you put your t-shirt back on.
“Yes.” You stated, “I need this to start.”
You looked completely dishevelled and, for once, Loki looked the same. Undressed from his elegant, designer suit, he sat naked in your bed, covered only by the sheets the two of you had only moments ago been writhing and moaning under.
You tried fixing your hair and dabbing at your make up, but nothing seemed to be able to shake the “freshly fucked” look from your body. You huffed, giving up on trying to look somewhat proper and started collecting your notes and mentally ran through everything that needed to be said in the meeting.
“You need to get your ass up or you’re going to be late.” You rolled your eyes.
“And when has that ever been an issue for me?” He smirked.
“Loki, this is a group meeting, not one of your little Bourgeoisie get-togethers.” You complained.
Loki sighed, getting out of the bed and starting to dress himself again. He had his suit pants back on, unbuckled, the silky material already complimenting his elegant frame. Still buttoning his shirt, he crept up behind you. You became aware of him when, moving the hair from your right shoulder, he kissed your skin lightly, dragging his lips from your edge of your collar bone to the curve of your neck before stopping at the shell of your ear.
“You know what this is, right?” Loki whispered, his velvet voice sending shivers down your spine and causing heat to rise inside you all over again.
Your breath hitched, your mind momentarily clearing except for the awareness of the reaction Loki caused within you. There was something about him that always had you tingling. Yet, that tiny voice of reason slowly came back to you, and you quickly shook your head, turning around to answer him without allowing yourself to fall under his spell again–not that you didn’t want it the first time.
“It’s good sex that’s even better because of the rush from it being illegal.” You deadpanned.
“You’re wrong.” Loki chuckled lowly.
“Well, what is it then?” You asked, slightly irritated by his stalling. The two of you needed to get to the meeting, but all Loki seemingly wanted was to discuss your sex lives.
He brought himself right up against you, the tips of your noses touching as you both breathed in each other’s breaths. His swift motion threw you off guard, but the air suddenly felt static with the tension between the two of you, but you knew that you didn’t have time to do this again.
“It’s a power exchange.” Loki breathed. “For a few short hours, you have complete control of my body… my pleasure… my pain… For this brief period, you can do whatever you want with me, to me. It’s that temporary exchange of control. That one that the government is so afraid of, so they have rules. Yet, they don’t understand how that only adds to the thrill. How, at any second, we could get caught and that has me thrumming like a livewire, but even sweeter is that it’s you who’s beneath me… or on top of me… or beside me.”
As he spoke, his hands roamed your body, and you couldn’t help but quiver under his touch. His words flowed so smoothly from his lips, his seductive tone playing with your mind. If you weren’t so strong willed, he could’ve talked you straight back into your bed where he’d ravish you for the rest of the night, but you knew there were things to be done.
“Loki, stop.” You said, voice barely above a whisper.
“Fine. I know it’s not just me that desires your attention.” He sighed.
You moved away from him, but he continued speaking. “You’re leading this for a reason, you know.”
“I know.” You stated, gathering the last of your things as he straightened his suit.
“Not completely, though.” He muttered.
“What are you talking about?” You groaned.
“You might not see it, but you’re by far the most important part of this plan working. I know there are various brilliant minds within our little group, but this would all be lost without you. You don’t know this, but Pierce keeps a remarkably close eye on what goes on within this city. Yet, he’s completely overlooked you. Out of everyone within our circle, you’re the one he’d never see coming. Compared to everyone else, I know you may see yourself as small, but you’re just as spectacular, perhaps even more so. You’re so alluring, people fail to see what’s hiding beneath the façade of those entrancing eyes, and that’s their fatal flaw. You don’t see it, but we need you the most.”
You huffed out a breath, not wanting to have to think about all that when you needed to prepare yourself for the meeting that would inevitably start it all. Turning back to Loki, you softly kissed his cheek, trying to wordlessly convey your gratitude to him for seeing you in ways you couldn’t see yourself. It was an intimate gesture, and although the two of you were passionate, it was not something you were used to.
You took his hand, leading him out of your room and into the dimly lit passageway. Being part of the Proletariat meant that you didn’t have much that you could call yours. You had a small space that barely qualified as an apartment. Equipped with a single bedroom and bathroom, the miniscule, decrepit lack of room gave you the only place to escape to that you could call yours. If you were lucky, some days the government bothered to supply your building with running water and electricity, but for the most part you relied on the things your friends in the Bourgeoisie gave you. Like Loki said, it was a power exchange.
You and Loki reached the elevator that would take you into the depths of the building’s underground floors. By some stroke of good fortune, you managed to find a building to live in that still had a running underground section. There was a small collection of them in the city, but they were all slowly starting to fall apart, becoming too dilapidated to bee inhabited. The floor you were going to had a small open-plan room that worked perfectly as a meeting place for your group.
Initially, it seemed to be a large underground storeroom of sorts, but as a building that only housed Proletariat citizens who could barely afford daily necessities, it was empty when you found it. Tony and Fury had helped you sneak in all the equipment that you needed, while Peter, Maria and Wanda had filled it with all the technology that would help you monitor the government. Now, it functioned as the underground headquarters for your group. Tony and Fury had moved in a few couches and a coffee table that was situated in the back-left corner of the room and functioned as a meeting area. The entire top half of the right wall was covered in monitors showing surveillance from various parts of the city that Peter and Maria had managed to hack from the government. The rest of the room’s space housed various tables and workbenches that you each used individually to plan, strategize, develop weapons and create new technology.
The elevator ride was relatively silent, you and Loki both lost in your own separate worlds. He knew not to bother you, sensing your nervousness at finally having this plan start rolling. Your group was still relatively new, having only consisted of all seventeen of you for a few months, but you had all finally decided that you were done waiting. Changes had to me made in society, and they had to be made immediately.
The elevator opened, and you walked steadily towards the room. Your heart thrummed in both excitement and nervous energy. You knew what you wanted to say, but you had no idea how this meeting was going to pan out. As you walked through the doorway into the meeting room, you were greeted by the faces of the rest of your group members. As it turned out, you and Loki were the last to arrive. You knew Bucky would give you crap for that later. Everyone was seated comfortably in the meeting area, only waiting for you. Loki found a seat next to Thor, while you took your spot between Steve and Bucky. As you sat down, you felt them gravitate towards you–the three of you had a likelihood to do that. Once you were comfortable, you looked up and knew that it was time for the meeting to commence.
“Hi everyone, thank you for coming.” You started.
“Where else would we be?” Clint mumbled, rolling his eyes.
You shook your head at his constant cynical demeanour but continued nonetheless. “I know how we all feel right now. Those of us who’ve grown up on these streets are tired. Tired of having to fight for everything we have and face the injustice of a society we didn’t choose. Those of you who were born into lives of luxury but had that stripped away because you didn’t have the freedom to love or the freedom to choose to be kind. Those of you who were raised straight into the hands of the government and can no longer stand their ways. I think we’ve all realised the ways in which we’re unhappy.
“From those of you who’ve worked under the government, and from how all of our lives have been influenced by the governments rule and their laws, we all know that this injustice needs to stop. But it’s gotten to the point where it won’t stop unless we do something about it. We’ve tried the passive route. We’ve tried showing them the error of their ways. Yet, they haven’t listened. In their eyes, this system is immaculate. But we know better.
“So, we cannot act passively anymore. We’ve waited long enough. It’s time for an overthrow. There are too many people living in poverty and bearing the weight of this injustice just so that the rare few can live in luxury. This is not something we can tolerate anymore. This is our opportunity to make a change.”
Most of them stared at you in awe, completely inspired by your words. Loki was right in how he called you alluring. You had an air about you that was almost regal. Had you been born into the Bourgeoisie, you would’ve been all-powerful. Not only did you have a wondrous mind of your own, but you had the capability to inspire the brilliance and innovation of others.
“So, what’s our plan?” Tony asked, causing you to smile cunningly.
“I have a plan, but you’re all going to need to help.” You smirked.

Revolutionary (A Stucky x Reader Imagine) - inspired by Badlands by Halsey [PROLOGUE + Chapter One]
“Hello, and I’m sorry: a salutation and a farewell. I don’t have much time. This Times New Roman is gonna fly through my fingertips, like a plague of moths. The hollow black-letter shells crunched into the ground, like the skin of a cicada. And you can do whatever you want with it–keep it to yourself, or let it serve as a warning.
“This city is disgusting; a corpse of what it used to be. The people are filthy, gluttonous: ruled by the power exchange of sex from the hands of the proletariat to the bourgeoisie. The tops of the skylines buzz with the lacklustre enthusiasm. The ground level is caked in dirt and rust and grime, and the people that dwell there awake and rub the filmy layer off their lukewarm eyes.
“There are some here I love, some who fear me, and some who wish I was dead. I didn’t ask for this. No one asks for this. You’re born into it. You grow up oblivious and sheltered, and one day the evil realities of this place hit you square between the eyes, like a perfectly aimed bullet. If this were a movie, I would ride off in some blood red sunset, down a stretch of desert road, into the wasteland that keeps us captive here. But this isn’t a movie. These are the Badlands.”
-Halsey

Chapter One: Castle
These were the Badlands. A singular long-forgotten city that existed leagues away from any other known civilisation. No one knew what happened to the rest of the world, just that as far as your eye could see, all that remained was a stretch of desert wasteland, seemingly endless. The city itself was completely dystopian: a dilapidated ground level filled with squalor and people living in misery. They were referred to as The Proletariat–the 99% that was forced to live off the scraps the government could barely care to provide. That other 1% was what you called the Bourgeoisie. They were the richest of the rich, living lives of excess and gluttony. Yet, the superfluity could never hide the emptiness that never wavered from their dull eyes.
The government could barely care for order. They’d passed few rules of society and as long as they weren’t broken there were never any issues. These rules were:
1. The Badlands are what’s left of society, you may never leave.
2. There is a clear line between Proletariat and Bourgeoisie. You cannot cross it. Be exiled if you dare.
3. Relations between the Proletariat and Bourgeoisie are taboo. People who break this rule will be outcasted.
The government’s biggest concern was keeping the Proletariat separate from the Bourgeoisie. Naturally, people had their ways of bypassing the rules. They met in secret, spoke in codes. That was how you’d become part of an underground circle that believed in equal treatment of all people. The government only acted to keep the people they liked happy. The needs of the rest of the city were never prioritised. The group you belonged to wanted change.
You were a small group–barely over fifteen people. Consisting of people mostly part of the Proletariat, there were few Bourgeoisie members. These included Tony Stark, Natalia Romanova (better referred to as Natasha Romanoff), Loki Laufeyson, and Nicholas J. Fury.
The mastermind that was Tony Stark remained a mystery to you. The government adored him. A descendant of Howard Stark, the man responsible for the city surviving, Tony had both privilege and the weight of rather large shoes to fill. Yet, Tony was treated as royalty, but he couldn’t care less for the system the government had in place. He’d seen too many people dying in the streets to be able to continue turning a blind eye. Soon after embracing his dissatisfaction, he’d met you, and the two of you formed a pact, vowing to make a difference.
Natasha was a beauty born straight into the government. She’d seen what they were doing and had been appalled. Unlike the rest of society, Natasha didn’t grow up sheltered. Her parents were government agents who helped enforce the ruling system. They wanted her to grow up to be just like them, so the system was her harsh reality from the start.
Loki was the most reluctant of the Bourgeoisie members in the group. He enjoyed his life of luxury and liked being able to have the entire city at his fingertips. He just couldn’t take the injustice anymore. Not after his brother, Thor, renounced his position within the Bourgeoisie to be exiled to a low-class Proletarian lifestyle.
Nicholas Fury had stumbled into your group by chance, but it was a chance you were all thankful for. He was the right-hand man to Alexander Pierce, the leader of the government’s schema. His desire for equality along with his pull within the government, made him an integral part of your circle.
The Proletariat members consisted of you, Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Thor Odinson, Peter Parker, Clint Barton, Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, Bruce Banner, Vision, James Rhodes, and Maria Hill.
You, Steve and Bucky had grown up together. Growing from friends in your youth to something so intricate yet indescribable as the three of you got older. They were your closest confidants and gave you both everything you wanted and needed. Relationships and labels didn’t exist within the Badlands, so you could exist freely with your boys. The three of you had made a pact to follow each other to the end of the line, even if that meant that they were following your lead through this revolution.
Thor Odinson joined shortly before his brother Loki. He’d been a member of high society but had a good heart. He’d spend a lot of his money trying to help those he could within the Proletariat in whichever way he could. This made him highly unfavoured with the government, so they propositioned him. He could either stop helping the Proletariat or be stripped of his wealth and become one of them. The convoluted system somehow gave the government the rights to do that. So, Thor chose to rather be a part of the Proletariat.
Peter Parker was your youngest member. He had a brilliant mind and, together with Maria Hill and Wanda Maximoff, had found a way to hack all of the government systems. There was no special reason for any of them being in your circle, they were only tired of living in squalor.
James “Rhodey” Rhodes and Pietro Maximoff also only joined for the cause. Rhodey because of Maria, and Pietro because of his sister. They were both strong fighters, which you knew you’d need to win this war, so you accepted the both of them gladly.
Bruce and Vision were two of the most intelligent men you’d ever known. They both had a passion for knowledge and, unfortunately, being born into the Proletariat didn’t allow them much access to it. Yet, with what they had, they somehow managed to be incredible at developing the weapons and tools that would be needed to power this revolution. Vision was spectacular with raw materials, having the skill to rival even the most qualified mechanical engineer, whereas Bruce was the Proletariat leading expert in chemical and biological weaponry.
Lastly, Clint Barton probably had the biggest vendetta out of anyone in your circle. Like Thor, he was exiled from the Bourgeoisie. What hurt him the most was that he’d lost his position because of falling in love and the government stripped him from his choice in the matter. Instead, they took his wife, Laura, only minutes after they’d gotten their marriage licence signed in secret. They took her to a government facility, never to be seen again, and had outcasted Clint to be a Proletarian. Knowing the cruelty of the government, he worried for Laura’s life and all that pain changed him, hardened him into the man he is now.
You were chosen as your circle’s leader not only because of founding the group with Tony and your elaborate mind for strategy, but you all knew that the city would need a Proletariat leader after you overthrew the government. You weren’t self-elected. The group all believed in you. They knew that, mentally, you were the strongest and would be the best person to lead them both through the overthrow of the government and the change in the future. These may have been the Badlands, but this was your revolution.

Bucky Barnes Imagine - No More Time (Part 2)
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Enhanced!Reader
Warnings: some angst and swearing, but all the floof at the end 😊
Summary: what happens after the avengers wake the reader from cryo
Word count: ~4000
Part 1
It had been three months since you’d gone into cryo, and to say that Bucky was a wreck would have been an understatement. He missed you too much to even comprehend. He’d spent the two years prior to you going under, getting close to you and getting used to actually having someone to show him all the love and support he needed after being the Winter Soldier for 70 years.
He could barely eat or sleep, and when sleep eventually came, it only brought nightmares of you screaming in agony as the toxin tore you apart from the inside. He’d always wake up panicked and try to reach for you, only to realise that you weren’t there and feel the heavy weight of dread and sorrow settle inside him.
He missed your smile; your endless optimism despite all the difficult things you’d been through; and the way you managed to be honest while always sparing his feelings. He just missed everything that made you the person you were, and he couldn’t stand living without you. He wasn’t himself without you.
Despite how he felt, Bucky never let his feelings make him despondent. Instead, he channelled them. Every ounce of hurt, sorrow and anguish was pushed into finding you a cure. At first, he didn’t know what to do. He couldn’t go back to the Latvian HYDRA base since it had exploded right after the two of you managed to escape. He didn’t have a clue as to where the scientist might be, and he had no other leads that would help him find him. With every passing day, Bucky felt increasingly hopeless.
The one good thing he had going was the support system he had in the Avengers. The team had been completely understanding and, having gotten to know you as well, understood why he loved you so much. They tried everything to keep Bucky’s spirits lifted as well as help him find a cure for you.
As the days went on, and things didn’t seem to be looking any better, the smallest ray of hope finally appeared. Bruce had been furiously studying the blood samples he took from you before you went into cryo, and he’d finally made a breakthrough with reverse-engineering a cure. He had managed to create an anti-toxin that would first target your mutated cells, killing them. Then, once all the bad cells were gone, it would target your cell-regeneration but hopefully create healthy cells again.
After running a few tests with bacterial cultures and running the anti-toxin’s formula through simulations with FRIDAY, he found that the anti-toxin worked. Feeling triumphant, he called in the rest of the team to tell them about his discovery. The team came in slowly, expressions ranging from confused to hopeful. Bucky, for one, could barely contain himself. He didn’t even know why Bruce had called them in, but he knew that there had to be something. He couldn’t help his heart beating a little bit faster at the thought of being able to see you again–to hold you again.
“Is everyone here?” Bruce started, “good. Well I’m excited to say that I may have reverse-engineered an anti-toxin for Y/N. If all goes well, it will remove all the harmful cells and replace them with the regenerative cells she once had.”
At first, everyone stared blankly, processing the information, until finally Bucky spoke up, “Is it safe?” He asked, hopeful, but he couldn’t help being a bit apprehensive. He didn’t want to risk your life even more than it already had been.
“I’ve run it through simulations with FRIDAY as well as with a few cultures, and all the results look hopeful.” Bruce stated.
Bucky couldn’t help but crack a smile, his eyes starting to tear and a fluttery feeling in his chest swelled as he thought that this could be it. He’d have you back again. The more he thought about it, the more his smile grew. Every single happy memory flooding back to him at the thought of making new, even better ones with you.
“When can we give it to her?” He asked, his voice cracking. The sudden rush of hope hitting him hard.
“Give me an hour to make sure everything is ready, then we can start bringing her out of cryo and give her the anti-toxin. By the time she wakes up, she should be healthy.” Bruce stated.
Six hours later, everything was going according to plan. You had been brought out of your cryo tank five hours ago and had been given the anti-toxin. Bucky had been by your side for the entire process, not wanting to leave until he saw you awake and healthy. Even then, he’d stay because you had so much time to make up for.
You were lying in one of the beds in the medical wing of the Avengers compound. Bucky was lightly tracing his fingers on your arm, and that was the first thing you felt as you slowly woke up in a haze. You could hear the soft hum of machinery and the steady beat of a heart monitor. Your eyes felt heavy, as if they had been closed for too long, making them slightly difficult to open. Slowly, you opened your eyes.
Everything was blurry at first. As you blinked to clear your vision, things slowly started to come into focus. As you looked around, your eyes settled on the only person you ever wanted to see.
“Hey there, doll. It’s good to finally see you.” Bucky beamed at you, taking you hand in his metal one.
“Bucky.” You whispered before clearing your throat, scratchy from lack of use.
“I’m here, Y/N,” He smiled, happiness undeniable in his features. “and you’re here, too”
Slowly, everything came back to you: the letter you got, moving into the compound, the virtual reality date, all the pain from the toxin, and the slow fade-away from going under. You couldn’t help the sudden fear that overshadowed the joy you felt from seeing Bucky.
“What happened? Did you guys get rid of the toxin?” You asked, slightly panicked.
“Y/N, calm down. Bruce reverse-engineered an anti-toxin. Your body’s completely healthy, just like it used to be.” Bucky smiled, stroking your hair with his flesh hand.
You couldn’t hep but smile back at Bucky, his reassurance instantly calming you. You softly squeezed his hand, gazing into his eyes and seeing so much light in them, silently making you feel all the love that he had for you.
Bucky shook his head before leaning in to embrace you, yet still being mindful of the wires you were connected to. His left arm wrapped around your waist as his right arm went around your neck, his fingers tangling in your hair as he held you close to him. “God, I missed you so much.” He whispered.
You didn’t hesitate to wrap your arms around him, nuzzling your head into his neck and breathing him in. You sighed, remembering how you never felt happier than when you were in his arms.
You stayed that way for a while, just holding onto each other as you enjoyed each other’s presence. Slowly, you pulled away and looked at Bucky again. He gazed back at you, elated at having you back again.
“So, when can we get out of here? I feel like we have a lot to catch up on.” You grinned.
“Well, I know Bruce wants to keep you here for a little bit longer, just so that we know that the anti-serum worked and there’s no way that your body will react badly to it.” Bucky replied.
“Okay, you’ll stay with me though, right?” You asked, only just realising how much you wanted to be around him. Even though you didn’t remember being in cryo, its as if your body subconsciously knew you’d been apart for too long, making the thought of him going leave you more than slightly anxious.
“Of course not, doll. I’m not leaving your side.” Bucky reassured you.
You scooted over in the bed, creating a small space for him to slip into. Bucky immediately got up and climbed in next to you, pulling you into him and letting your head rest on his chest as your hand wrapped around his waist.
Feeling as though you’d spent too much time asleep, you just lay there listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat as you traced patterns from his chest to his abs. Bucky hummed in relaxation and you giggled at the vibration.
“I missed this too.” He murmured, trailing his finger up and down your spine, “just lying with you and feeling you next to me. I love how we used to just be. Never needed to do anything but could just enjoy being with each other. I love how I can hold you now. Those months without you were hell.”
“Hey, I’m here now, and I’m not leaving. I love you.” You whispered.
“I love you, too.” Bucky answered.
After a few days, you were cleared from the medical wing and allowed to return you your apartment in the compound with Bucky. Everyone agreed that it would be safest for you to just continue living there and you didn’t mind. You’d found a new sense of friendship with all of them, and you could tell that Bucky was more at ease not having to keep your relationship secret from them anymore.
You and Bucky immediately stepped back into the swing of the way things were before the whole situation with the toxin, making up for all the dates, kisses and cuddles that were missed because of you being in cryo. You spent your days blissfully in the company of Bucky and the other avengers, and you were delighted when they’d said you could go back to work again. Your nights were spent in Bucky’s apartment as you passionately got reacquainted with each other’s bodies. But, your happiness was short-lived.
You and Bucky were sitting at an outdoor table at a small café in the city. He’d decided to take you out on a lunch date away from the compound, so you wouldn’t be annoyed by the other avenger’s antics. You sat across from each other, hands linked across the table as flirtatious smiles were passed between the two of you. Despite having been together for years, you couldn’t help but be just as in love as you were in the early days of the relationship.
You had just ordered your food a few minutes prior and were making small talk as you waited. You and Bucky had both been slowly sipping your drinks and everything felt perfect until you slowly felt your head grow heavier. You tried to blink away the sudden fatigue that had overcome you and as you looked up at Bucky, you saw that he didn’t look too great either.
“Doll…” Bucky whispered, knowing that something was wrong. That was the last thing you heard before everything went black.
You woke up in a cell. You were surrounded by four white walls and the room was empty aside from the small bed you were lying on. You looked towards the door and you saw a small barred opening at face level. You got up a bit too quickly, feeling a bit unsteady, but rushed towards it.
The door was locked but you tried to press your face close to the openings between the bars so that you could see your surroundings. As far as you could see, you were in a passage lined with many cells similar to your own. Suddenly, you saw a head come into view in the cell across from yours.
“Bucky!” You yelled.
“Y/N!” He answered, eyes meeting yours as soon as he heard you. “They must’ve drugged our drinks!”
“I figured.” You replied, automatically filling in all the blanks in your head. After they’d found out that you were better, HYDRA must’ve followed and drugged both you and Bucky and taken the two of you back to their newest facility.
“Don’t worry, doll. Tony put a tracker in my arm the last time he modified it, just in case this sort of thing happened again.” Bucky reassured you. “They should be here any minute.”
You nodded at his words, calming down slightly. You took a breath and looked back at Bucky, admiring how he managed to stay so level-headed throughout the situation. He was your rock, and if he could be strong, you could be strong for him too. You gave him a determined smile before sitting back down on the bed and waiting for the two of you to be rescued.
Only a few minutes later, you heard a loud explosion that resonated from one of the building’s extremities. Even though the explosion caused the building to shake, you could tell that it had come from quite far away since it wasn’t that loud and all of the walls surrounding you were still intact. You stood up from the bed and looked at Bucky hopefully. You were going to escape before they could hurt either of you again. Or so you thought…
Just then, the scientist came striding in. You looked down and saw some type of serum in his hand but, this time, he was going towards Bucky’s cell. This time, the toxin wasn’t for you. He stormed forward and immediately unlocked Bucky’s cell. But, as soon as he walked in, he realised his mistake.
One does not single-handedly attack a former master assassin. Once the scientist stepped into the cell, Bucky instantly grabbed his arm, subsequently knocking the serum from his hand. You could see the rage in his eyes. Bucky had been so hurt and broken by HYDRA and this man torturing not only him physically, but by forcing him to watch how they caused you pain. He couldn’t help all the rage and vengeance that stirred within him.
“Don’t you fucking dare try and come at me with more of the shit you created to fuck people up!” Bucky roared, causing the scientist to cower away from him–with little success considering Bucky’s death grip on his arm.
“I should tear you apart! Rip you limb from fucking limb because of everything you did to me! To her!” He fumed, his eyes murderous.
You were well aware of Bucky’s past. Hell, it was how the two of you met. But, the Bucky you were looking at now was not the Bucky you had come to know and love. You’d only ever seen him be gentle and kind. You knew he had the capacity to cause severe damage, but you’d never actually seen him inflict any harm on another person before. You were surprised, to say the least, but you understood where he was coming from. You still remembered what it felt like to have your body ripping itself apart internally, but you didn’t want Bucky doing something that would haunt him later. You knew he’d gain the satisfaction of having eliminated the threat that had plagued both of you for so long, but you also knew that he didn’t need more blood on his hands.
Luckily, that was when Steve rounded the corner to the passage you were in. He ran down until he got to your and Bucky’s adjacent cells. He first looked to you, but your frantic gaze directed him towards Bucky’s cell. He stepped into the cell immediately.
“Buck.” Steve warned. “I know you’re mad, but you don’t want to do this, and you know it. Just stop for a second. Think about how you’ll feel after you kill him.”
“I don’t care! I was under his control for a long time while I was the Winter Soldier! And after that, when I was happy, he tried to make me watch him painfully kill Y/N! So, I don’t care! He deserves to die!” Bucky screamed his argument.
“That may be true, but what happens after his dead? Then how will you feel? He may deserve to die, but you don’t deserve to feel any more pain than you’re already feeling.” Steve stressed.
Bucky let Steve’s words sink in, hand still tightly clutching the scientist’s arm. He looked down to the ground, trying to shake his mind clear, but suddenly the serum came into focus in his vision.
“You know what Steve, he doesn’t deserve to die, and I don’t deserve his blood on my hands. But, what he does deserve is to feel everything he’s done to everyone else.” Bucky said, his voice even and steady, which somehow seemed even more unsettling than when he was raging.
Keeping his grip on the scientist, Bucky bent down and picked up the shot, jamming the needle into the scientist’s neck. He pressed down and emptied the syringe into his body. Suddenly, the scientist went stiff and his face went blank, eyes rolling to the back of his head. Steve and Bucky stared wide-eyed at him. He stood in that state for a few minutes, basically catatonic.
Steve looked at Bucky and asked, “what was in there?”
“I have no idea, he never got a chance to explain before I knocked it out of his hand. Serves him right after he tried to come at me with it.” Bucky muttered.
When the scientist finally came to, his face paled. He had the expression of a doomed man, and to Bucky, that was even more satisfying than seeing him dead. Now he’d be able to personally feel all the pain he’d caused. Bucky sneered at him before handing him to Steve and leaving the cell.
He rushed to the door of your cell, wanting to check on you. “Doll are you okay?”
“I’m fine, are you?” You asked, more worried about him than anything else.
“Everything’s all taken care of now.” Bucky smiled.
You stepped back, and he kicked down the door before rushing forward and embracing you. You loved how he felt. Somehow holding Bucky always felt like home. You loved how, in those moments, you could be enveloped by everything that was him: his touch, his smell, the sound of his voice as he whispered sweet nothings in your ear. Once the two of you finally stepped away from each other, he beamed at you.
“Let’s go home.” You sighed, happily.
2 months later
The sun streamed through the bedroom window of your and Bucky’s shared apartment in the Avenger’s compound. You slowly blinked your eyes open and smiled blissfully as you felt the heat of a warm body pressed against you.
“Morning, love.” Bucky whispered, pressing a lingering kiss to the back of your neck.
“Good morning.” You whispered, turning yourself around to face him. Bucky gazed down at you with so much love in his eyes. You felt like your chest was expanding, as if your heart could burst with all the love you had for him.
“We should probably get up soon. The team’s gonna be looking for us to start getting things ready for the party tonight.” Bucky sighed. The Avengers had just finished tying up all the loose ends with the HYDRA scientist. The base was raided, and they found all of his notes on the serum he intended to give Bucky.
It was a toxin that targeted both the super-soldier serum he’d been given and the neural links to his metal arm. By targeting the super-soldier serum, they would’ve had control over how much pain his body could be exposed to, and painfully torture him into being the Winter Soldier again without taking his memories away, so that he could live with his actions in the forefront of his memory. By targeting the neural links to his metal arm, they would’ve taken away some of his autonomy, turning up the pain receptors until it hurt so much that he couldn’t move.
Finding the plans made relief crash through Bucky’s body in waves. They didn’t have control over him anymore. The scientist, himself, got placed in a sanatorium. Taking the serum drove him mad. Bucky was only glad that he was locked far away, and he didn’t have any more blood on his hands.
The party that evening was to celebrate another element of HYDRA that they’d taken down. You couldn’t be prouder of Bucky and everything the two of you had overcome. You’d both been through so much, and now you’d finally found happiness.
“Nah, they can wait a bit longer. I wanna enjoy this moment with you a little bit longer.” You grinned, nuzzling your face into his neck and placing a chaste kiss on his collar bone.
“I love you so much.” Bucky sighed before taking a breath, “I wanted to wait until the party tonight, but this moment just feels right.”
He gently removed himself from your arms and reached for something in the drawer of his bedside table. It was too small for you to see and his thick frame managed to keep it out of your line of vision. He turned back to you before speaking again.
He looked down at your relaxed, blissful form in adoration and took one of your hands in his. “Y/N, we’ve been together for nearly two and a half years now. We’ve been through so much, both individually and together, but what these last six months have made me realize is that I’m terrified of having no more time with you. You told me before you went into cryo that I’m the happiest your life has ever been. Well, I want you to know that I can’t imagine ever being happier than when I’m with you. When that scientist told us that we had no more time, I felt like in that moment my heart shattered. I couldn’t bear the thought of being without you, and those three months where you were in cryo, they were absolute hell for me. So, now, I feel like there should be no more time where I’m not truly with you. So, Y/N, what I’m trying to say is will you marry me?” He asked, opening the small box in his hands and revealing the most beautiful ring you had ever seen. It was a white gold band, with a sapphire in the middle that was surrounded by an array of tiny, sparkling diamonds.
You gasped, tears had already started streaming from your eyes in the middle of Bucky’s speech. The moment had already been so intimate and full of love, and then Bucky poured his heart out and you felt like yours was soaring. At a loss for words, and with a body so love-filled, you nodded a “yes” before launching yourself at Bucky.
You wrapped your arms around his neck and he momentarily forgot the box as his hands found your waist. You wasted no time in connecting your lips, passion and love blazing through the kiss. You kissed Bucky with all the fervour you could muster, pouring yourself into him and letting him feel all the love he made you feel. Bucky reciprocated every motion, holding you close as if he never wanted to let go.
You both pulled away breathless, and Bucky reached for the box again. He lifted your left hand and placed the ring on your finger. He couldn’t stop the smile that broke out across his face as tears welled in his eyes. He’d never felt so happy and now you were going to be truly his.
“I love you.” You whispered. “No more time apart from you, I can’t wait for lives together.”
“You’re everything to me. I love you.” He whispered back to you.

rebloging because part 2 is coming out in a few minutes. It wasn’t requested, but I figured we could all use some closure after that ending.
Bucky Barnes Imagine - No More Time
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Enhanced!Reader:
Word Count: ~6200
Summary: 2 years after Enhanced!Reader saves both Bucky and herself from Hydra, Hydra decides to take its revenge.
A/N: Hey guys, so this is my first imagine that I’m posting and it’s loosely based on the song No More Time by flor (You should really check them out, both the band and the song are AMAZING!!!), but I hope you guys like it. Feedback is much appreciated. :)
Warning: Angst, swearing
Your life had been difficult, but you had finally gotten to a point where you were genuinely happy. You’d been dealt a bad hand. When you were younger, you had found out that you had an enhanced ability: cell regeneration. Your cells both healed and replaced themselves so fast that you were even able to cheat death (essentially making you immortal).
It wasn’t long until people found out about your ability. Hydra had sent the Winter Soldier to abduct you when you were only 16. You couldn’t understand what purpose they had for your abilities until the torturous experiments started. Each day, they exposed you to painful tissue extractions, trying to find the root of your abilities in order to replicate them. Hydra had taken you from your family, only to replace them with a life of pain without solace.
This continued for 10 years, until you finally broke free. The Hydra base you were in fell under attack and, by some technological error, your cell was opened. You were finally given the opportunity to try and escape the organisation that had made your life a living hell.
As you ran through the labyrinth of corridors, you passed a large room filled with numerous cryo tanks. Being locked in Hydra for so long, you had come to hear about who the Winter Soldier was from various doctors, scientists, and agents that happened to talk about him around the room you were being held in. The opportunity in front of you was too sweet. You needed to rob Hydra of their most lethal and favoured weapon.
You drained and opened the tank that the soldier was being held in, desperately trying to hold up his limp body while trying to help him regain consciousness. After a few angst-filled seconds, he came to, with an exceptionally confused look on his face.
“Where am I? Who are you?” he asked frantically.
“You’re in a Hydra base that is currently crumbling, and my name is Y/N. But, Come on! We need to hurry if we want to make it out of here alive.” You stressed.
The soldier nodded and unsteadily stood to his feet. Once you were sure he didn’t need your assistance, you let go of him, only to grab his hand and pull him as you broke into a run. You needed to escape the facility. You had come too far to take the opportunity for granted.
You and the soldier made it out of the building just in time as its foundation crumbled with a massive explosion. Panting, you finally stopped to breathe once hidden in the treeline of the forest that concealed the Hydra base. You turned to look at the soldier.
“So, now that you know who I am, and I set you free, who are you?” you asked. The soldier blinked confusedly, as if trying to grasp at memories that were barely there.
“My name’s B-Bucky, I think.” He murmured, clearly not trusting his own mind.
He groaned in frustration, clenching his hands in his hair, still wet from the cryo tank. He sank down onto the cold soil of the forest floor, breathing deeply as he tried to compose himself. He opened his mouth again, thinking hard, then closed it and reopened it, before replying.
“My name is Bucky Barnes,” he sighed, “that’s all I can remember. Hydra has scrambled my brain too many times for me to count, so that I could be their soldier.” His voice was full of contempt at the mere thought of Hydra. It was then that you realised that they had ruined his life just as much as they had ruined yours.
“It’s okay, Bucky. I understand how you feel. It’s just that, right now, we need to keep moving so that we don’t get recaptured.” You stressed. Bucky nodded in agreement. Getting up from where he was seated, he seemed to almost choose a point at random, before he led you through the forest until you found any other semblance of civilisation.
2 Years Later
You and Bucky were happily back in New York. After discovering that the Hydra base was in Latvia, you and Bucky managed to find a place for yourselves while Bucky slowly but surely regained his memories. After about six months, Bucky’s memory was sufficient enough that he remembered who Steve was, and that he was still alive. After discussing it with you, Bucky decided that he would contact Steve so that he could go back home. He didn’t want to involve you yet since he knew what the implications of him going home would be–he was a criminal.
Yet, Steve came through for him and got all his charges cleared and his brainwashing removed. Six months later, Bucky was able to secretly move you from the small, one-bedroom flat you shared in Latvia to an apartment in Brooklyn. At that point in time, he was in the process of becoming an avenger, and he didn’t want you to get caught in the crossfire of any battles between him and his enemies. So, you kept your relationship a secret from everyone, including the avengers.
That was how you and Bucky got to your current state: him working as an avenger while you worked as a freelance illustrator for various publishing companies. Although you led very different lives, you and Bucky had become so close that you couldn’t picture life without each other. Even after a year, none of the avengers knew about your relationship. But, that didn’t matter. Your relationship with Bucky had you in a constant state of bliss.
He loved you, and he reminded you of that every day. He felt that he owed you everything: if it wasn’t for you, he’d probably still be the Winter Soldier. Yet, what he felt for you wasn’t just dutiful devotion. You could tell by the look in his eyes that he adored you. His entire world would shatter if he ever had to lose you. And, one day, that was exactly what happened.
It was a Saturday morning and you were walking to the front of your apartment building to pick up your mail. Once you got up to your apartment, you closed the door and made your way to the couch, flopping down and flipping through the envelopes, trying to pick out the important ones from the spam.
You found one with no return address, and you found that strange. You picked up the blank white envelope, turning it over and examining it, yet you couldn’t get any information from it. As you opened it, you felt a feint, heady smell filled your nostrils. You could feel the sickly-sweet aroma slowly clogging your senses, making your head foggy and, before you knew it, you started to fade into a black abyss.
You were woken up by a frantic Bucky shaking you awake. You looked up to see a distraught look in his eyes that only slightly lessened once he realised you were awake. You groggily rubbed your eyes, trying to piece together what happened before Bucky got there.
“What’s wrong?” you asked, noticing the panic on his features.
“Well, I texted you to let you know I was coming through, but you didn’t reply. I came through anyway and the door was unlocked. When I came inside, I saw you lying on the couch, but I figured you were just asleep. Then, I saw the note in your lap. Y/N, you haven’t read it yet, have you?” Bucky replied, the worry in his eyes not lessening.
“No, I haven’t. What did it say?” you asked.
“It was from Hydra. The letter was laced with a toxin meant to attack the part of your brain that triggers your cell regeneration. Essentially, they’ve made you mortal, and now they’re saying you’ve got no more time.” Bucky replied, eyes tearing up at the thought of losing you.
You stood, staring blankly ahead of you as you tried to process what Bucky had just told you. You couldn’t fathom how this was happening. As you stood, you attempted to mentally analyse every part of your body, trying to see if anything had changed or felt different, but you still felt the same.
Bucky was the complete juxtaposition to your stillness. He was pacing up and down through your living room, clenching and unclenching his fists in frustration while muttering to himself as he tried to think of a solution.
You looked up to him, the man you loved so much, and it broke your heart seeing him so scared to lose you. You moved towards him, grabbing his hands and feeling them relax as you wrapped his arms around you. You breathed into his chest, trying to enjoy it while fending off the thought that the threat was true, and it might be one of the last times you get to enjoy being with him. You felt Bucky’s arms tighten around you, and you knew he didn’t want to let go. His chin rested on your head and you felt every deep breath he took, trying to calm himself.
“What are we going to do? I can’t lose you.” Bucky whimpered.
“You won’t,” you replied, adamantly, “for all we know the threat is fake. I don’t feel different and besides, the regeneration was only useful whenever I got injured. So even if I only have just one life, it can still be a long one.”
“Y/N, you still haven’t read the letter. You didn’t see what they said. Does ‘no more time’ not mean anything to you? They took away your ability so that they could do something fatal to you, and even if the threat is fake, I won’t risk that.” He stressed, his blue eyes wide with both worry and sincerity.
“Let me see the letter.” You commanded, fatigue slipping into your voice as you started to feel the weight of the issue.
Bucky handed you the single white piece of paper. As you brought the paper up to reading distance, you realised how anxious this whole matter made you. You could feel your heart rate increase, racing as you slipped into a slightly panicked mental state as you were about to read the single page that may or may not hold your fate.
Good day Miss Y/L/N,
As you might have guessed, we’ve found you. I hope you’ve enjoyed these past two years because you won’t have much longer. This letter has been laced with a toxin particularly designed to target you, specifically your cell generation. This toxin will inhibit your brain from undergoing the process that allows your cells to regenerate, meaning that you can’t heal, and you’ll age. You’re essentially mortal.
Don’t think that we won’t capitalise on that. We haven’t forgotten that you’ve stolen our greatest asset, and we won’t be very forgiving about it either. We’ve been watching you. We know how close you’ve gotten to the former soldier. We’ll give you a slow, torturous death while we make him watch.
Enjoy your last few moments with him because, all too soon, you’ll have no more time.
HYDRA
Processing the letter was even more difficult than processing the news from Bucky. The letter had a kind of finality to it that was just far more terrifying. You could feel your heartbeat thrumming in your ears as you sunk down onto the couch, breathing heavily as you tried to comprehend and anticipate everything that was about to happen to you.
Bucky took a seat next to you, pulling you into his arms and rubbing your back to calm you down. He desperately wanted for you to be okay and at ease, but he couldn’t expect that when he was just as terrified as you were.
“We can get through this, Y/N.” Bucky whispered. “I can call Steve and we can move you up to the Avengers compound. It’s highly secure and you can stay there until Hydra’s officially been destabilised and the threat isn’t there anymore.”
You could only nod, paralysed by the increasing feeling of fear growing inside you. You didn’t realise how scared of death you actually were until Hydra made it a reality for you. It wasn’t only death, though. It was knowing that now your time with Bucky was limited, and it was knowing how much it would break him if they forced him to watch you die.
“Okay,” you breathed, voice barely a whisper, “I’ll do anything as long as it’ll keep me with you. I know I’m the one with the threat of dying, but it hurts even more knowing that my time with you is limited.”
“I won’t let it be. I’ll always be with you, Y/N. Hydra won’t get to you.” Bucky promised, placing a kiss on your forehead.
The next two days passed in a haze for you, not for any lack of event, but only because you couldn’t get out of your head and the fear of any day being your last. You were introduced to all the avengers and they welcomed you with open arms. Steve was the only one slightly disappointed that his best friend hadn’t trusted him enough to tell him about the woman he loved, but he let it go soon enough, wanting to do anything in his power to make sure you were safe.
You moved into a room in the compound on the same floor as Bucky and Steve, though the room was more of an apartment in itself, with its own lounge area, kitchenette, bedroom and bathroom. You knew you’d hardly be spending any time in there anyway as you wanted to spend all of your time with Bucky.
You knew that wouldn’t be possible, though. Just like Steve, possibly even more so, he was doing everything in his power to secure your safety. Unfortunately, that included confining you to the compound and barely allowing you access to the world beyond it.
He’d been increasingly loving with you as the days passed too, giving you everything you asked for, always looking at you as if he was trying to memorise every single one of you features, and whenever you were in the same room, it was as if he always needed to be touching you. It wasn’t in the sexual sense: only ever running his fingers on your forearm, or caressing your cheek, or having is arm around you. It was as if, when he wasn’t touching you in some way, he feared you would disappear.
You’d spent all of the morning in Bucky’s bed while he attended meetings with the avengers regarding your safety and trying to snuff out Hydra. You didn’t really know what to do with yourself. Although the compound had many means of entertainment, it wasn’t the same as being able to go outside and enjoy the city.
You rolled over on the bed, groaning in frustration just as Bucky entered the room. He walked over to you, sitting down at the edge of the bed. He grinned at you as he grabbed one of your legs, stroking his hand over your calf and ankle.
“What’s wrong, doll?” he smiled.
“This compound is mind-numbing!” you groaned, “I know I haven’t been here long, but I have nothing to do. I can’t go to work, or into the city. It’s like everyone throws a fit if I even mention stepping a foot out of the compound! I know you want to keep me safe and that this is to make sure I get to live, but Buck, this isn’t living! This is just waiting.”
“I know, and I’m sorry.” Bucky replied, face falling, “but it’s only until Hydra’s down. I know it’s frustrating, but I’m scared to death of losing you, so I’m sorry I’m taking all this precaution.”
“It’s okay.” You sighed, “I do understand. I also want to be spending as much time with you as I can because, as much as I don’t want to believe it, there’s a chance that they could succeed with their plan. But, all that aside, I miss how we used to be.”
“How do you mean?” Bucky asked.
“Bucky, we can’t really act like this relationship hasn’t been tainted by both of our pasts being difficult, but even then, you always loved me despite that. Now, it’s like you treat me like glass; as if I’m going to disappear the moment you look away.” You replied.
“You can’t really blame me though. Every time I leave you, I get this pressing fear that Hydra could somehow have gotten to you before I get back. Maybe I do treat you like glass, but it’s only because I don’t know if when I see you will be the last time.” Bucky said, despair clouding his once happier expression.
“I understand. It’s just that sometimes I wish you could love me the same way you used to: simply. I used to be able to feel just how much you loved me by just one smile. Now it’s as if everything you do is exaggerated. I know things have changed but I really hoped that how you loved me wouldn’t. I guess what I’m trying to say is, when it comes down to it, can you love me the way you used to, with no more time?” you explained.
Bucky looked at you with wonder, perplexed by your explanation, yet reminded of one of the reasons he loved you to begin with. Despite the shared trauma, and always being there for each other, Bucky loved your mind. To him, every experience with you was like seeing the world from a different perspective. That was how he came to understand how you were feeling. All he saw was that he had a limited amount of time to love you, so he was trying to love you with all he had. Yet, he didn’t realise that that was exactly what he’d been doing for the duration of your relationship. What he was doing now was suffocating.
“I understand.” Bucky smiled.
“I’m still here, Buck, and I love you. Let’s just enjoy that while we can.” You said, raising a hand to stroke his cheek.
Bucky leaned into your touch, savouring the intimacy of it and appreciating your close proximity. You leaned into him, cupping his face as you softly touched your lips to his in a sweet kiss. Bucky brought his hand up to your neck, lacing his hands through your hair as he pulled you closer to him, deepening the kiss and filling it with all the longing and emotion he could muster. You couldn’t help but breathe into him, fully immersing yourself in everything that was Bucky. You dropped your hands, slowly dragging them down his chest and around his waist, getting as close to his as you could.
You both pulled away breathless, Bucky with a loving smile on his face and you with a warm blush on yours. Bucky caressed your cheek softly, his eyes filled with so much adoration as he gazed at you.
“I love you.” He whispered, “with time or not.”
The next few days were better. Bucky had made a conscious effort to make sure that you were less bored. Aside from trying to spend more time with you, while not suffocating you with his behaviour, he’d worked with the rest of the team so that they could keep you company and do fun activities with you on the compound. Clint had taken you to play mini-golf (beating you by a landslide), Natasha had become your gym buddy, Tony let you experiment with some of his suits, Wanda had become a movie night buddy, and Steve had given you some art lessons.
You’d definitely grown closer to all of the team members and the compound was starting to feel a lot more comfortable. Things had gotten so good that, if it hadn’t been for the team members working on the Hydra case when they weren’t with you, you would’ve forgotten the threat completely.
That afternoon, Bucky walked into his room (where you’d basically taken up a permanent residence) with a wicked grin on his face. You cocked an eyebrow at him, wondering what he had up his sleeve this time.
“Come with me. I have a surprise for you.” Bucky beamed.
“Okay.” You agreed, reluctantly, getting up from his bed as you giggled at his antics.
Bucky led you through the compound and after walking through a few corridors you came up to one of Tony’s open lab areas. This was one of the spaces Tony worked in, especially when testing prototypes for his new suits. The area was big enough to test the jet propellers while being wide enough that not much damage came to the room as a whole if anything spontaneously exploded.
As you walked in, you realised that the room had been cleared. It was just you and Bucky enclosed by the four walls. You looked at Bucky in anticipation, waiting for him to tell you what was going on.
Bucky held his hand up to you, and that was when you realised that he’d been holding something. You took the pair of virtual reality goggles that he was holding out to you, but still stared at him expectantly as he hadn’t said anything yet.
“So, by the look on your face, I can tell that you’re quite confused. Well, I was thinking about the other night when you said that you were frustrated because you couldn’t leave the compound. So, I came up with a compromise. I asked Tony to help me and he set up multiple virtual reality scenes into the goggles. The goggles have also been modified to pick up my position in the room, so you’ll be able to see me within your virtual reality.” Bucky explained.
“Bucky, that’s amazing! Thank you so much!” you gushed.
“You haven’t even seen it yet.” He chuckled.
“Well then let’s do it!”
You immediately put on your goggles, switching them on while Bucky did the same. Once they were on, you were no longer in Tony’s lab. Instead, you were in a galaxy themed settings menu. You could see an abyss of stars and an array of luminescent colours, painting the most beautiful image of the universe you’d ever seen. Right in front of you was a list of different virtual realities you could choose from: rooftop picnic at midnight, sunset on the beach, central park, hiking through the forest, haunted house, music festival, and even a virtual version of Thor’s Asgardian palace.
“Where would you like to go, doll?” Bucky asked.
You grinned as you considered all your decisions. They all seemed like really nice places to go, but you couldn’t help feeling drawn to the haunted house. Not that you needed one, but it felt like a good excuse to get close to Bucky.
“Haunted house.” You grinned excitedly.
“As you wish.” Bucky smirked.
You moved your head to focus your gaze on the icon for the haunted house. By holding your gaze there, you were able to select it and were immediately transported from the galaxy to what appeared to be a corn maze in the middle of nowhere. It was the dead of night, and all you could see around you were stalks of corn that came up to the height of your head. If you looked up, all you could see was the blue emptiness of a starless sky.
You jumped up, getting a fright as something lightly brushed your hand. Bucky burst out laughing behind you and you turned around to punch his shoulder at his lame trick. Once he calmed down, he actually took your hand and laced his fingers through yours as he looked around.
“Are you sure you want to come to a haunted house, especially seeing as you scare so easily?” Bucky teased.
“Ha. Ha.” You deadpanned, rolling your eyes, causing Bucky to chuckle lightly.
“Come on, the house is over there.” Bucky stated, leading you through the corn maze as he could actually see over the stalks. “Also, you should know, the lab has been modified to mimic the surroundings of the virtual reality. So, you’ll be able to see, hear, and smell everything around you within the virtual reality. Your only senses that are limited are taste, not that you would be tasting anything, and touch, to an extent. For instance, you’ll be able to feel a breeze in the air or a draft coming through the house, but you won’t be able to physically touch any of the objects.”
You nodded at Bucky’s explanation before you both continued walking in a tense silence, consumed by the eerie feeling surrounding you. It felt like the temperature of your surroundings had dropped by 20°C, and you couldn’t help the shiver that went down your spine. Bucky noticed and unlinked your hands, so that he could wrap his arm around you to try and keep you warm.
“Thanks.” You whispered.
By then, you and Bucky had already made it out of the corn maze and were coming up to the haunted house. The house was quite old. Made of grey wood and with blackened windows, it looked menacing. There was a wooden porch that surrounded the whole house, with bare furniture that only added to the house’s look of desolation.
You and Bucky started your walk up the porch steps, the ominous presence and overwhelming silence made it seem as though you could feel the creaking of the steps reverberating through your entire body. As you made it to the top of the steps, you found that the front door was ajar.
“You ready?” Bucky asked, looking over to you.
“Yeah, let’s go.” You replied, moving to go into the house.
Somehow, as you walked in, thunder struck. Rain started pouring down and the only thing illuminating the house was the brief flashes of lightning, adding to the house’s eerie atmosphere. Bucky stepped in front of you, trying to get a clear look around the house and decide which way to go. While he did this, you felt yourself stiffen, the hair at the back of your neck raising as you felt something uncannily similar to someone breathing down your neck. Immediately, you grabbed Bucky’s hand, squeezing tight to prompt him to turn around.
Bucky turned, and his eyes widened as a deep, deafening laugh filled your ears. Paralysed, you couldn’t do anything but scream. Unable to turn around to look at what was behind you, you let yourself be yanked into Bucky’s arms. Once you’d stopped screaming, you looked back up to Bucky, only to find him with the most amusing grin you’d ever seen on him.
“What is it? Why are you smiling?” you asked.
“You freaked out because of some skeleton ghost. I looked behind you and saw this dark figure, but then the lightning struck, and it was this skeleton of an old man in a suit. It was quite freaky seeing him light up while his eyes stayed so hollow, but then you started screaming and it just got funny.” Bucky said, before breaking into a laugh.
“Yeah. Well you didn’t feel it breathing down your neck.” You muttered.
“Y/N, it’s dead. It literally can’t breathe. Also, the sensory limitations only allow you to feel wind and differences in air temperature. You shouldn’t be able to feel anyone breathing down your neck.” Bucky stated, the amusement quickly falling from his face and his eyes becoming frantic.
He ripped the goggles from his face and you quickly did the same. As you adjusted to being back in the lab you immediately heard someone laughing, namely Tony. Bucky glared at him as he stalked towards him.
“What the hell, man!” Bucky shouted, rage coming off of him in waves.
“Bucky, it was a joke!” Tony said, coming down from his laughing fit.
“It’s not funny, Tony. I thought someone had creeped up on her and was about to take her away.” Bucky stressed.
“Come on, tin man. Relax.” Tony sighed, rolling his eyes, “you know the compound is secure.”
“I know.” Bucky huffed, “I just worry sometimes. I can’t lose her.”
As things quietened down in the room, you saw a flashing light on the window. Suddenly a hologram appeared. In bright red, block letters, the words ‘NO MORE TIME’ appeared and, before you knew what hit you, a searing pain flooded through your head. This time, the scream you let out was genuine and bloodcurdling.
Bucky’s eyes filled with terror as he watched you fall to your knees, clutching your head in agony. Tears streamed down your face at the pain pounding through your head and starting to flow to the rest of your body. He rushed towards you, but when he tried to touch you, the contact felt as though it was singeing your skin. Bucky looked to Tony with a painfilled expression.
“What do I do?” he asked, frantically.
“I don’t know. What’s happening to her?” Tony asked, nearly as panicked as Bucky was, “F.R.I.D.A.Y., call Dr Banner!”
After a few minutes, Bruce burst into the room, immediately trying to come to your aid. He tried to touch you in order to find the source of the problem but, just as he was about to touch you, Bucky stopped him, filling him in on what happened.
“Then what do we do? How do we move her to the med bay to find out what’s wrong with her?” Bruce asked.
At this point, most of the other avengers had filed into the room to see what had happened. They all had solemn looks on their faces, not knowing what to do to help you. Finally, Wanda stepped forward.
“I can help. I can deaden the pain receptors in her head so that she momentarily won’t be able to feel anything, and you can carry her to the med bay.” Wanda suggested.
“That could work.” Bruce nodded.
With a movement of her hand, Wanda’s red energy enveloped your body and suddenly, the pain dissipated. You gasped for air, feeling like you could finally breathe now that the pain wasn’t consuming your entire body. Bucky picked you up quickly, and ran with you to the med bay, where Bruce quickly hooked you up to some machines that could start testing what was wrong while giving you a sedative for the pain that would return as soon as Wanda stopped her magic.
Once you were secure in the med bay and Bruce was waiting for the test results, another hologram appeared at the med bay window. This time, instead of a message, a person came up. You immediately recognised him as the scientist whose control you were under when you were still a prisoner in Hydra.
“Hello, Y/N. I see you aren’t doing too well. I can bet that you’re all wondering what’s wrong. Well, remember the toxin in the letter? It was designed not only to inhibit your cell regeneration, but also, after a certain period of time, to target your pain receptors. When it targeted your cell regeneration, it didn’t stop you from producing new cells. The toxin allowed that those new cells that were produced were mutated so that they didn’t heal you but started attacking other cells instead. Essentially, the toxin allowed your new cells to kill you from the inside. Now, your beloved Bucky and all your friends can slowly watch you die without being able to do anything about it. You’ll be in too much pain to allow them to perform any treatment on you.” He explained, malice dripping from his voice with every word.
“What do you want!” Bucky cried, tears in his eyes at the thought of losing you, “I’ll do anything! I’ll come back! I’ll be your asset, just please stop this! All she ever did was set me and herself free from the agonising lives you inflicted on us! She doesn’t deserve this!”
“Oh, but she does, Mr Barnes. It wasn’t her decision to make to free the both of you. So, now she has to pay and there’s nothing you can do about it.” He replied, smugly.
“Then, I swear to God, I’ll hunt you down and I’ll kill each and every one of you slowly and painfully, just like you did to her, until the world is eradicated of this disease called Hydra.” Bucky seethed.
“Do what you wish, Mr Barnes. You’ll spend your life chasing an act of futility. When you cut off one head, two grow back in its place. Hail Hydra!” He declared before the hologram went black, and all you could see was the clear night sky through the window.
Just then, you cried out, feeling the searing pain starting in your head again. Your regenerated cells had burnt through the sedative and were now burning their way through the rest of your healthy cells too.
Bruce had finally come back with your medical chart, after giving you some more of the sedative, he confirmed everything that the scientist had just told you. They wouldn’t be able to find a cure for your cells fast enough and any medication they administered would burn through your system in minutes. You truly had no more time.
“No. No! No!” Bucky cried, tears really rolling down his face. He started pacing through the med bay, not knowing how to express his angst and heartbreak. Eventually, he threw over the empty bed that was next to yours, knocking over more medical equipment in the process. Steve had to restrain him so that he didn’t cause any more damage to the room.
“Bucky, blowing up like this isn’t going to help–” Steve started, holding Bucky against him.
“Nothing’s going to fucking help her, Steve! She’s dying! I’m losing her…” Bucky choked, his face flushed with pain and anguish as he started sobbing into Steve’s shoulder.
Everyone went silent for a few moments, until Bruce spoke up. “I’m sorry Bucky, there’s nothing we can do for her. If we give her any medication, we’re only prolonging the time before her cells get to her. As much as I want her to live, we already have her on the strongest sedative we have, and she burns through it in minutes. I’m really sorry, but no matter how much we slow down her cells, her death is inevitable.”
Bucky had been listening through his sobs, tears still streaming down. He didn’t want to accept that he was going to lose you. But, suddenly something Bruce said stood out to him.
“Dr Banner?” Bucky started, looking up at him.
“Yes?”
“The sedatives you have, how long would it take her to burn through all of it?” Bucky asked.
“About two hours.” He replied.
“You said we could slow her regenerated cells down. I know that, when you put someone in cryo sleep, there is barely any cell function–it’s extremely slow. Would that slow her cells down enough to find a cure?” Bucky asked.
“That could work.” Bruce replied, after thinking it over for a few minutes. “I can give her the rest of the sedative. That will give you approximately two more hours with her while we prep a cryo tank.”
Bucky nodded. “Do it.” He commanded.
Dr Banner administered the rest of the sedative before him and the rest of the avengers filed out of the med bay, leaving you alone with Bucky. The sedatives made you quite drowsy but, knowing what was at stake and how much time you had, you fought off the urge to sleep. Bucky sat down next to your bed and slowly started stroking your hair back, trying to smile at you through his tear-stained face.
“Everything will be okay, Y/N” Bucky smiled, but it wasn’t doing much to convince him or you.
“Bucky…” you sighed, “you’ll be okay, but I’m dying.”
“Not for long, doll. We’re going to save you. Once you burn through these sedatives, you’ll go into cryo where your cells will be too slow to harm you. That’ll give us enough time to find a cure, then we can be together again.” Bucky explained.
“I’m so sorry, Buck.” You cried.
“What are you sorry for? You have nothing to apologise for.” He stated.
“If it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t be hurting so much right now.”
“You’re the one who’s heavily sedated so that her cells won’t kill her, and you’re worried about me being hurt.” Bucky chuckled, looking down at you lovingly. “Also, thanks to you, I’ve had the most amazing two years of my life, and I promise we’ll have so much more than that when all this is done.”
“I love you.” You sighed.
“I love you, too, Y/N.” Bucky replied, leaning forward to kiss your forehead.
Your eyes started drooping, sleep becoming more and more difficult to fend off. Bucky stroking your hair back wasn’t helping. The soft motion only helped lull you away.
“It’s okay. You can go to sleep. I’ll see you again before you know it.” Bucky said, a tear rolling down his cheek.
“I’m sorry. Bucky, I just want you to know, you’re the happiest my life has ever been…” you said, before you felt yourself slowly drift away.
