“Deathbed of Daphne”- Apollo, Pineios.

If you prefer to analyze pieces on your own (and I invite that you do!) I wanted to warn that I will be going into some of my own input and behind-the-scenes of my piece below.

On a general level, the setting is the birthday party gone twisted. The cake is present just like in the pre-crash party, but the visceral blood-like spill from the cake implies a darker kind of "cake" being cut into (post crash bday scene). The cake here is a representation of Curly, to be straightforward. Even in its positioning in front of the sunset screen.

The "cocktail" being just straight mouthwash with a little umbrella in it was made to be so straightforward in appearance because I knew that (as I made this for a class assignment) people who didn't know Mouthwashing would be seeing it and I wanted to communicate that it was not a normal cocktail. No ice, no mix-ins or dressing up aside from the umbrella. The bubbles on the surface hopefully read as kind of soapy and therefore not really meant for consumption.

The "sunset" was achieved in my IRL reference still life set by layering red bandages in front of a desk lamp. I was honestly shocked at how nicely it worked. It even has those lines across it like an older screen display (blanking on the words). I wanted to connect to that significant Mouthwashing imagery of the sunset screen, and it next to the "cocktail" really gives a kind of artificial "vacation" vibe that I really enjoy.

I was so pleased that I had a pink drink umbrella with flower patterning for this piece. Not dissimilar from someone's shirt.

There is a horse in this piece. Really. There's an itty bitty horse figure underneath the party hat- you can see its legs poking out underneath. Kept out of sight and out of acknowledgment. 🤔

The candles- we have one yellow, one green, one red/pink, and one blue. Color association- Swansea, Jimmy, Daisuke and Anya. (Curly not represented as he is the cake.) Only one of the candles is off-kilter, crooked you might even say.

A concept I followed was items that can dress up a situation without actually making anything better on its own. Icing a cake. Throwing confetti. An umbrella on a drink. A bandage on a broken leg. A curtain on a window. (The red fabric on the right). The situation was dressed up to make us feel better but not actually handled. It’s still rotten at its core.
