I think the "coin toss" in SOMA makes a lot more sense if you stop looking at it as a 50/50 on which body you wake up in, and as more of a Schroedinger's Memories type deal

The moment you agree to be scanned, and you sit in that pilot seat, there's a 50/50 chance you're the original person, or you're the memories of the scan. The scan is an exact copy of you up until that moment, so it will think it has lived your life up to the scan before it wakes up whenever it's used. Once you're scanned you have no way to know if you're the original or not- it's the same as clone logic.

So as much as Catherine said there was no coin toss, there kind of was. People just didn't understand the fact that the scans weren't transfers and that the toss was never about that.

like whenever i watch modern tv it almost breaks my immersion and connection to the characters because the people are so perfect and made up that i'm hyperaware these are actors. this is all a show.

but watching older ones it's easier to get into because things were allowed to be imperfect and a little weird and everything feels much more real
