r.e racehorses, I've seen a trend recently of people playing the trumpet that sounds before races to ex-racehorses, and they immediately freak the fuck out - heads raise, ears prick, nostrils flare, eyes whiten, sometimes they immediately flee - and their owners think this is like, excitement? Reliving the 'glory' days? They're literally traumatized Janice, this is the freeze (or flight) response, how can you POSSIBLY own a horse and not know this???

If online dog videos have shown us anything, is that people tend to be incredibly bad at reading animal body language. Confirmation bias is partly to blame, they think horses enjoy racing so they interpret that behaviour as excitement rather than stress, even in cases where they’d recognise that for what it is in any other context. Horse racing is one of those things where I just cannot conceive of how anyone can see it as anything other than incredibly cruel.

I had the privilege of growing up with a pretty progressive family, all supporters of LGBTQIA+, Civil Rights, Feminism ect. My household was a safe space for friends at school who didn't have that.

But now that I've grown up and extended that compassion and empathy towards animals too, I'm "extreme", and I'm making everyone uncomfortable at the dinner table. I wouldn't even call myself preachy - I just exist as a vegan and it disturbs them.

They raised me to be kind, and then they're shocked that I grow up to be kind? Bffr
