Something serious

Recently, I was in a car crash for the first time. I was driving a full car, with one of my friends seated in the back middle, a German exchange student in the back left, an Argentinian exchange student in the back right, and an underclassman riding shotgun as I drove us to the international film festival for a school event. I was chatting with the others, talking about growing up in America, listening to rock and roll music, and enjoying stories about the exchange students’ experiences in the U.S. As we were talking, we approached a two-way stop sign, and I braked. I looked left, then right, then left again, and took my foot off the brake and accelerated forward. I peered ahead to see if the parking ramp was in sight, as it was my first time driving in the area, and I get lost easily, when I heard something. I turned my head to the right, and met the eyes of a bearded man driving a white Honda. I swerved to the right, him to the left; he clipped my car. I thought it was over, but then the car behind him made contact with the passenger side of my car.

I could have sworn my heart stopped. I had never been in a car crash before, and I didn’t know what to do. My greatest worry was that someone was injured. After checking my passengers and making sure they were unharmed, I got out of my crunched car and went to check on the other vehicles’ occupants. The man driving the Honda was fine. The woman driving the Toyota was fine. Her seven year old daughter was fine.

I had been so scared at the fact that I almost hurt so many people that I was on the edge of bursting into tears. I was ashamed and angry and terrified.

The worst thing was that I wasn’t even considered “distracted” in the way most people think of distracted driving. I wasn’t on my phone; I wasn’t fiddling with the radio. I was just chatting and listening to my classmates; I was looking for the parking garage. I had looked both ways.

And yet I missed the “one way” sign. I looked left twice, but traffic was coming only from the right.

I can not begin to imagine how people can eat or drink or text or play with their phones while driving, because I was clearly unable to handle a conversation and searching for a parking place at the same time.

The first few days after the accident were horrible. I had recurring nightmares about the incident, each one getting worse.

Distracted driving comes in many forms, and not all of them are so obvious. I learned this the hard way. I let myself get too caught up in conversation, and I could have gotten someone killed from my mistake. I’m a lot more hesitant while driving now. I keep a close eye on the road, make sure I can read the road signs, double check the lanes before merging, and always checking intersections.

I haven’t hurt anyone yet, and I hope to never do so due to my own negligence. I try my best to drive responsibly, but it is a work in progress, one that is never finished as new situations arise. But I can’t do it alone. Even if I am a proactive driver, other people may be distracted, and that is where awareness comes into play. If we all just set the phone aside, or keep music on the radio to one channel instead of flipping through them haphazardly, we can prevent more accidents, especially deadly ones.

Bisexual Symbolism???

I have no clue of any symbols that bisexual people could use to identify others in public. Apparently there's an asexuality symbol that is a ring, so, if bisexuals just don't have a symbol, why not create our own ring? Many bi people, including myself feel invisible and sometimes excluded from both the heterosexual and homosexual communities for being "indecisive," "uncertain," or for just not choosing one "side." But... there isn't a side, guys. It's just kind of an area in a giant circle of shifting colors to me. Just because the colors are different don't mean they aren't colors... With this invisibility in mind, why not have a transparent or partially transparent ring as a symbol? Maybe mother of pearl? I don't know, it's just an idea. A lot of the time we are discrete and/or ignored, so a simple thing that isn't too eye catching would be a good idea. If this sounds crazy, well, I guess I'm just crazy. I'm not trying to make a giant statement or something-- I just want to be able to find others like me, be it for friendship, awareness, or romance. It's just something that'd be nice to have.

Remember that this can happen anywhere. People can be terrible, but they can also be wonderful. Don't waste your time with people who treat you badly; instead, search for those jewels of real friends, who may be hard to find but are so much better.

I've been in abusive friendships like a lot of other people, but so far I've been able to get out of each one. The only way I've been able to is because I have REALLY AMAZING FRIENDS who have actually DEFENDED ME against these people and helped me not to think too much about those people.

For Pete's sake, can we please be nice to people we call our friends?

been thinking about this again for some reason and these are the absolute worst to be in so please get yourself out of the friendship if these ring true for you before it has a huge effect on you

them yelling at you/hitting you/otherwise hurting you about something, then two minutes later being apologetic and forcing you to be friends again

the silent treatment

when you try and speak to them about some of their problematic behaviour they either deny it or blame it on you

playing the victim in front of others so you look like the bad guy

never knowing when they’re going to be happy with you or annoyed

hitting you hard for no reason, and saying it was a joke. I’m not talking when both parties know you are joking. i’m talking when they intend to hurt you then pass it off as you overreacting.

bringing up things you did years ago as a blackmail tool against you

threatening to reveal personal information that you trusted them with

being jealous that you have other friends

being possessive of you and yelling at you if you go anywhere without you

trying to get you to push your other friends away so you have no other choice but to stay with them

denies certain things were done or said

suggesting that you are inferior to them either directly or indirectly

emotional blackmail

causing you to doubt whether certain things were real or whether you’d just made them up

unpredictable responses - you walk on eggshells around them

twisting up every single situation so it seems you’re the one to blame

passive-aggressiveness

guilt tripping

seeing their face makes you nervous

they keep tabs of everything you do on social media

making other people think they are lovely and that you are the one who is messed up

takes your friends/anyone who is remotely friendly away from you

when you do something better than them, they go around complaining to other people. submitter

if you did worse than them on something and they say, ‘at least I did better than (insert name here).’ submitter

i understand that it isn’t easy getting out of an abusive friendship, hell, i understand as good as anyone. but trust me when i say, it’s 200% better than risking staying in the friendship and letting something really big happen. because that will destroy you, and it hurts so much more, and please just face them, stand up to them and say I am NOT taking ANY of your bullshit anymore, and don’t let them get back in your life. it may be hard, it may be the hardest, scariest, most difficult thing you’ve ever done, and you may feel like you’re drowning from the pressure of it all, but when you’ve done it, and when it’s over, you’ll still be left with what they’ve done but you’ll finally be able to breathe again and that’s the best feeling in the world.

How to Take Notes: from a Textbook

(Be sure to change the post type from link to text post when you reblog, if that’s what you want to do)

This method is best suited for textbook or article notes, and is a version of revised notes. It is also well suited for books you plan on returning to the bookstore or books you have rented, as it does not involve writing directly in the book itself.

First, you’ll need to find a notebook, and the pens you like the best. My favorite notebooks to work with for note-taking, especially for my “revised” notes, are the Moleskine, hard or soft cover, in size extra large. For this specific class (Intro to Gender and Women’s Studies), I decided that lined pages would suit my needs better. For my math, engineering, and science classes, I usually opt for squared paper, as I draw in lots of diagrams and graphs.

My favorite pens ever are Staedtler Triplus Fineliners, so even though they show through the pages a little bit, I still choose to use them. I just love the way they write. I usually write out my notes themselves with a Pilot G2 05 with black ink, as it writes with a finer line and doesn’t bleed through quite as much.

I usually try to set up my notebooks about a week or so before class starts, that way it’s ready to go on my first day of class.

You’ll want to start off by setting up your notebook. On my first page, I put my course code for my university, as well as the course title.

Next, and this is perfectly optional (I just like the way it makes the book look, especially at the end of the semester), I include some sort of related quote to the course. For my engineering courses (which are related to my major), I put a different quote at the beginning of each section. But as this is a two-month long course during the summer, I opted for one quote by Mohadesa Najumi at the beginning of my book.

Next I set up my table of contents and include a page with basic course information. As this course is all online, my course information just included the start and end dates of the course, what time content is posted and on what day, and the name of my professor. For my usual courses, I will include the days of the week the class meets on and where, TA names and contact info, as well as posted office hours for my professors and TAs and tutoring hours either in the library or in the College of Engineering.

Next is one of the things I’m most proud of.

While I religiously use my Erin Condren planner to map out my days, weeks, and months, I have found throughout my college experience that including monthly views for the months my class ranges has been helpful. This way, there’s no sifting through the multiple colors I have in my planner, and everything related to that class is in the same notebook.

On this calendar I include start dates of the class, the end date, the dates of exams or quizzes, assignment deadlines, office hours, etc.

For this course, as I just started a few days ago, I don’t have a lot of dates or information, so my calendars are still very empty.

Next up I go to my weekly overview. At the beginning of each week, I set up a weekly layout, and I include a list of assignments, tests, quizzes, tasks, projects, etc that need my attention throughout the week, and I place the days I plan on doing them or the days they need turned in onto the weekly layout.

Now you’re finally ready to get into taking the notes.

Gather your book, some sticky notes, and your favorite pen or pencil.

I color code my stickies so that the “revision” process later goes a bit smoother. In this case, I’m using blue to denote something interesting, intriguing, or thought provoking, greenish-yellow to represent the facts or important concepts, and pink for important vocabulary words and their definitions.

Read the selection once.

As you read along the second time, write notes on your stickies, and place them in a place of relevance directly on the page in the book. Just make sure you don’t cover up anything you need to keep reading.

Now, once you’ve read all the material in questions (you can choose to break it up however you want, but since Chapter 1 was assigned for the week, I’ve elected to break it into chapters), carefully remove your stickies one by one and lay them out on a flat surface. This is when having a separate color for vocab can be helpful, as I sometimes put all of my vocab at the beginning or end of a section, especially if the section of reading was particularly large.

Organize your stickies in an order that makes sense to you, and use this order as your basis for transferring those notes into your notebook. The order you choose can just be lumping them under similar headings. Some classes even lend themselves to a nice chronological order. Whatever you choose, just make sure it’s something that will make sense to you when you come back to it in the end.

Now organize the stickies!

Now you just start writing everything from the stickies into your notebook. I like to take each category or subgroup and put them in the book on the facing page, then put them back in my textbook as I finish with each post it.

Moving on to the next category.

Before you know it, you’ve written all of your stickies into your notebooks.

Now you’re revved up and ready to go. You can either keep going and make a note summary page (which I’ll show you next week), or you can leave it. These will also be helpful when reviewing for tests and quizzes. You can highlight or underline, or use even more stickies (which is what I usually do) as you review.

Ok honestly though, imagine APH Japan and APH Russia in a relationship. APH Russia always being extremely close, invading personal space, kiss greeting, lots of hugs, etc. and APH Japan not wanting to be touched excessively and valuing his personal space over all else and being extremely flustered at most of the things APH Russia does. Imagine APH Russia learning about personal space and boundaries in regards to APH Japan and trying his best to respect them, or imagine APH Japan warming up to APH Russia and accepting most of his interactions. But most of all, imagine the height difference.

basic japanese high school schedule for you, fic writers

students attend class from monday thru saturday, with saturday being a half day. sundays are off

the high school day usually runs from 8:30am to 3pm, but many students stay after for after school clubs or attend cram school in the evening

the school year runs from april to march with a summer break come the end of july. first term is from april to july, second term is from september to december, and third term runs from january to march

your favorite high school anime doesn’t have separate classrooms for no reason. japanese students don’t rotate classes like american students do; instead, they have a fixed classroom and class number (i.e., 3-A), and the teachers do the rotating

they also don’t have the same classes every day

they do still have homeroom teachers; however, “homeroom” is more of a class meeting at the end of the day rather than at the beginning

the students are required to help clean the school at the end of the school day before clubs start

school uniforms are a thing for high schoolers. dress code used to be much stricter but recently they’ve allowed more basic alterations to the uniform

please stop writing them like american schools you’re embarrassing yourself
