Oh, this game is so fun! Thank you for the tag @wannabelilybriscoe. I've been signing clinic notes for the past hour whilst considering my options...

Room On Fire - The Strokes. I consider this a perfect album and have thought so for more than two decades now.

Who's Next - The Who. I had to choose a nostalgic album, and I weighed various Beatles, CSNY, and Queen albums, but I ultimately landed here. This album has range and is singable, and Baba O'Riley just feels road trippy to me.

Hot Fuss - The Killers. Ugh, this was a painful choice because I was mentally pitting it against Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Modern Vampires of the City, and my beloved AM by Arctic Monkeys, but I think Hot Fuss has that driving je ne sais quoi and is also a flawless album for the genre.

Reputation - Taylor Swift. I limited myself to one Taylor album, and I really, really wanted to pick Lover. But... while Lover is dearest to my heart, Reputation is my genuine no skip album. When I listen to it, no matter what mood I'm in, I almost always listen straight through. '...Ready For It?' on the road is just unmatched.

Dil Se - A.R. Rahman. This album fought for its life to be included because it's only six songs. But I can't have a car without quintessential 90s Bollywood, so here we are.

Wanted On Voyage - George Ezra. This one was up against Billie, Gracie, and Hozier, so I'm almost surprised at myself for choosing it. But I do consider it a perfect debut album, it diversifies the overall vibe by adding a little bit of mellow, and it's just very special to me because of what it meant to me when it was released.

The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - Chappell Roan. I feel like she doesn't need any explanation actually. I don't care that it's only a year and a half old, it's already timeless.

This was going to be my Big Bang fic, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized it will realistically end up being closer to 100k words and too long for me to finish in time. But it's pretty thoroughly plotted out in my mind, so I am excited to get to it when time permits.

Despite the probably longer word count, it has a very short summary:

A tale as old as for-profit healthcare… After all, what’s a little “marriage for health insurance purposes” between best friends? 

(aka my very, very on-brand take on the fake marriage trope... feat. chronically ill Remus, soul-sucking tech employee with great insurance Sirius, idiots/friends-to-lovers, no MCD, Seattle WA and Mt. Rainier, shit talking Amazon, meddling Jily)

Really, this is something I think about a lot, especially as my country continues to up the ante on injustice and cruelty on a daily basis.

Writing on the internet is for fun and escapism, sure, but it can be those things while also not treating identities and cultures like a personality quirk (or reducing characters to *only* that trait).

And as a white woman in America, I know I’m going to do it imperfectly in my own work and am forever open to criticism and correction about how I portray identities that are not my own.

And let me say. Latino James is great. I love the representation. Solmussa did it first (in my fanfic journey) and it was with such tenderness and care and reality. You Signed Up For This Latino James straddles lines and identities, politics domestic and international, and that is real.

but too often in this fandom, that’s not the case. Him being brown is just a fun little quirk.

That’s not acceptable.

if you write Latino James, especially if you’re white and especially if you’re white and American, you better put some damn respect on his identity.

It’s not just google translate Spanish and reggaeton and spicy food and calling Effie “mami”. There’s nuance, and even if you choose to ignore that nuance in the story, you better address it in an author’s note.

Latinos in America right now… We’re going through it. Our community, our identity is more than just sexy fancasts and “brown skin stretched over muscle” or “papi” or “beastlike stamina” or whatever the fuck else, and to reduce it to that, with no further research or any nuance, for sake of trend or subverting JKRacist is… also problematic.

if you write characters of color, ACKNOWLEDGE IT. I’ve seen marauders at pride - where the fuck are my marauders protesting ICE? Protesting far right governments?
