I Need Help Finding a Book
I was talking to a friend about the plot twist of a fanfic I had read (Danganronpa fans might know which one I'm talking about).
Here's what I told her: In this fanfic, Character A disappears and Character B communicates with them through a series of emails, but Character B notices something's off about A's responses. It's later revealed that Character A is dead, and that too, committed su!c!de, and this whole time, Character B has been communicating with an auto-responder that Character A had set up.
When I told my friend this, she told me that what I had just described reminded her of a book she had read. Unfortunately, she didn't remember the title, but she remembered that the cover was blue, and had yellow houses on it, and two of the houses were red.
If any of this rings a bell for anyone, or if anyone has an idea of what book she was referring to, please tell me. Any help is appreciated!

The Word 'Ultimate' as a Noun in Danganronpa
In the Japanese version of the Danganronpa games, most of the characters are given the title "Super High School Level [Talent]". In the English localization, this was changed to "Ultimate [Talent]".
I mostly experienced the English localizations of the Danganronpa games, and one thing that stood out to me was the fact that in the English dubs, the word 'Ultimate' is frequently used as a noun. Especially in Danganronpa 2 and V3.
Two notable scenes where this terminology was used:
Trial one of Danganronpa 2 where Nagito snaps (Nagito uses the word 'Ultimate' as a noun a lot). The first thing he says is this:
"The Ultimates are working together to combat the despair of their friend's death!"
And the Prologue of V3 where Kaede and Shuichi wake up and meet each other for the second time after receiving their talents. 'Ultimate' is used as a noun a lot in this sequence, and in V3's prologue as a whole.
It made me wonder, how was dialogue like this handled in Japanese? It seems like it would be cumbersome to turn 'Super High School Level' into a noun.
I ended up finding a walkthrough of SDR2 with the Japanese audio, and watched the scene with Nagito mentioned above, and while I don't understand a word of Japanese, it sounds like he says the same string of words that is used when the characters refer to someone's talent/title. I'm assuming he says "Super High School Level" somewhere in that dialogue, but what does that line actually translate to?
Of course, I am aware that in some languages, you can do things with words that you can't do in English and vice versa. So it's completely possible that something unique to the Japanese language, or at least something that can be done in Japanese but not in English, was done so that the Danganronpa characters could refer to SHSL somethings collectively, and refer to so and so as a SHSL something.
Then when the games were localized, people on the localization team said "this does does not neatly translate to English. What do we do to circumnavigate this?"
"Well, we did change 'Super High School Level [Talent]' to 'Ultimate [Talent]', so we'll just turn the word 'Ultimate' into a noun!"
Or maybe it's as simple as they did turn SHSL into a noun.
If anyone knows enough Japanese to understand what the equivalent of using the word 'Ultimate' as a noun was in the Japanese version of Danganronpa, please tell me, I'd really like to know.

NDRV3 Sleeping Beauty Scenario (The Curse)
Hi, this is a short outline of how I imagine Shuichi gets put to sleep in my Sleeping Beauty scenario:
Kaito is absent when Shuichi gets put to sleep. I still haven't figured out a reason/explanation for that, but Kaito's absence would be felt by the group, especially Shuichi and Maki.
Perhaps upon Kaito's disappearance, Shuichi and Maki try to investigate and figure out what happened, but their searches turn up blank.
One day, Shuichi receives a note saying that the key to Kaito's disappearance is in the gym. The note seems like trouble...but it's not like he has any other leads. Shuichi decides to investigate in the gym.
As Shuichi heads for the gym, someone sees him, feels that something is amiss, and decides to follow him. Right as Shuichi enters the gym, the doors slam shut. Whoever followed Shuichi tries to open the door, only to find it locked.
They try to open the door, and in doing so, draw the attention of other characters. Or alternatively, they go to get help. Either way, the other characters arrive at the scene. Most of the cast attempts to open the door, especially the athletic and/or physically strong characters.
Eventually, the door unlocks, and the cast bursts into the room. Shuichi is nowhere to be seen when they enter, so they look around for him and call out his name.
Monokuma makes his presence known.
"Yeesh, take a chill pill people. Your beloved detective is right here!"
(Dramatically reveals an unconscious Shuichi)
No, he's not dead (Maki verifies this). He's just taking a really really long nap.
Then Monokuma explains the motive. (Does this count as a motive? It doesn't really prompt anyone to kill...)
Shuichi is under a deep sleep and will only awaken with a kiss. Also the group has three days to wake him up. If Shuichi doesn't awaken within that time frame, something bad will happen!
(Ideas for what "something bad" is: the spell becomes permanent, Shuichi suffers permanent damage, Shuichi gets punished, EVERYONE gets punished...)
Monokuma vanishes, and the group is left to process this situation.
Again, if anyone has any more ideas for this scenario, feel free to share them, I'd love to hear!

Scenario Time! NDRV3 Sleeping Beauty
In classic fairy tale fashion, Shuichi is put under a deep sleep by Monok- I mean, a random witch, and can only awaken with a kiss.
How might this go?
(The plot twist is I don’t strongly ship any of these characters with each other, so this will probably have little to no romance.)
(There will definitely be lots of platonic love though!)
Here’s what I came up with:
The Sleeping Spell
Maybe there’s a time limit thrown in to spice things up. Perhaps if they don’t wake Shuichi within in a certain time frame, something bad will happen. Or some other twist to the situation.
Right off the bat, most of the cast would be very hesitant and uncomfortable towards the idea of kissing Shuichi. Especially since he’s asleep!
But, there would be a few characters who just wouldn't care and attempt to take advantage of Shuichi while he's asleep.
Maki steps in and shuts that behavior down immediately.
Tsumugi then offers to cosplay as a princess and kiss Shuichi (or suggests some other questionable thing). Maki shoots down that idea.
At that point, Maki would just be trying to protect Shuichi from everyone because too many people are being creepy.
Kokichi then does...something. He would not try to take advantage of Shuichi, but he'd do something that ticks Maki off.
Whatever Kokichi does is the last straw for Maki (partly because she really doesn't like the guy). She scoops Shuichi up, moves him to his room (away from everyone else), and keeps an eye on him while thinking this situation over.
Alternate Solutions:
I'm not entirely sure when this would take place, because I am imagining a lot of friendship moments between Shuichi and Maki and Kaito, but Kaede's also here, and in V3, Training Trio friendship develops after Kaede dies. Oh well, for the sake of convenience, everyone's alive in this scenario even with the eventual Training Trio moments and killing game elements.
At some point, the doorbell rings, and it turns out to be Kaede. They aren't close really, but Maki trusts that Kaede won't do anything funny, so she lets her in. Kaede checks on Shuichi and decides that she's going to find another way to wake him up (one that not involve kissing).
Kaede would brainstorm and try various ideas, maybe with Maki's feedback. (At least one of Kaede's ideas involves music for sure)
Unfortunately, none of their ideas work.
I'd imagine this whole process takes a few days, during which Maki doesn't leave Shuichi's side. (Maki has seen a lot in her lifetime, and I wouldn't be surprised if she killed one of her past targets in their sleep.) (Also, way too many people were being creepy with Shuichi earlier.) (Point is, Maki's protecting her friend with her life)
Running Out of Ideas (and Time):
After all her ideas to wake Shuichi up fail, Kaede is left very frustrated.
Maki then starts considering kissing Shuichi herself. She'd much rather do that than let Shuichi get kissed by someone with ulterior motives.
(A peck on the cheek or forehead should count, right?)
Plus, Shuichi's her friend! Maki doesn't want her friend to stay asleep forever.
She'd voice these thoughts to Kaede. Kaede would understand her reasoning, but still...
I'd imagine Kaede would still insist she'll try to find another way to wake Shuichi up.
Maybe they reach a compromise where Maki says that if Kaede doesn't find an alternate solution that works by a certain point (especially if we're going with the time limit idea), she'll give Shuichi a kiss.
Kaito Momota Enters...er, rather, Returns to the Picture:
For one reason or another, which I haven't figured out yet, Kaito was absent when Shuichi was put to sleep. He returns, and of course, he wants to check in on his sidekicks! (Though he can't shake the feeling that something is very wrong)
I'm imagining Kaito overhears some of the other students talking about Shuichi, and their tone indicates that something bad has happened. Kaito would ask the other students what happened.
The other students would be surprised at Kaito's reappearance and might ask where's he's been. Kaito just repeats himself asking what happened with Shuichi. The other students then explain to Kaito that Shuichi's been put under some sort of sleeping spell and won't wake up-
And before they can finish, Kaito starts frantically searching the academy for his sidekick.
Never Fear! The Luminary of the Stars is Here!
At some point, while watching over Shuichi/brainstorming other ideas, Maki and Kaede hear someone shouting Shuichi's name outside. Huh, that sounds exactly like-
Their thoughts are confirmed when the doorbell rings nonstop.
Maki immediately lets Kaito in. Kaito is her friend, and Shuichi's friend, (and he'd also not try any funny business). Maki would be relieved to see him.
(Partly because she hasn't seen Kaito in a while. But now's not the time to ask about that).
Kaito spots Shuichi's unconcious form in the bed. Still catching his breath from his frantic search, he rushes over to Shuichi's side and starts speaking to him, hoping that the sound of his voice will break though whatever force is keeping Shuichi asleep.
"Limits don't exist unless you set them yourself!"
(Un)surprisingly, that does not work.
I'd imagine Kaito jumps to conclusions and assumes this is a motive where Shuichi won't wake up unless a murder happens or something.
Maki and Kaede upon hearing that would explain the actual nature of the predicament Shuichi's in. Then, well...
Kaito: “Wait. Shuichi could wake up if he gets kissed?”
Kaede: “Yeah, I was told he’d awaken with a kiss.”
Kaito: “A kiss?”
Kaede: “Yeah. A kiss.”
Kaito: “That’s it?”
Kaede: “Yes…?”
Then Kaito swiftly walks over to Shuichi. Maki starts asking Kaito what the hell are you doing-
When Kaito bends towards Shuichi, and gives him a kiss. A very chaste kiss, but nonetheless, the move shocks Maki and Kaede.
The three of them anxiously stare at Shuichi's still form, searching for any sign of movement or consciousness. The seconds tick by, each one feeling like an eternity...
...Then, Shuichi stirs slightly, and his eyes flutter open.
(Sighs of relief)
“Hey there Sidekick! It’s good to have you back.”
Kaito just goes with kissing Shuichi because it’s a simple, fairly harmless solution. Besides, what kind of hero would he be if he left his sidekick hanging when there’s a solution like that?
(Kissing is a MUCH better solution than murder!)
Kaito doesn’t think any deeper on it, and would be more focused on making sure Shuichi’s okay when he wakes up.
Maki is left bewildered. But after taking a moment to process what just happened, she's relieved.
Maki knows Kaito well enough to know he gave the wake-up kiss out of righteousness more than anything.
And she did say that she’d prefer if Shuichi were kissed by someone he’s close to, and Kaito does meet that criteria. So overall, Maki thinks this turned out okay. Even more so now that Shuichi's awake!
Waking Up + Aftermath
Shuichi is very confused upon waking up (and probably embarrassed once he realizes he was just kissed). But he would be relieved that he's okay and awake, and comforted by the fact that he wakes up surrounded by his close friends.
Kaede then goes and finds everyone to tell them that Shuichi's awake.
Once the group learns that Shuichi's awake, they would head to Shuichi's room to confirm for themselves (and also to see that he's okay).
Some of them express relief, some of them might be confused and curious as to how Shuichi woke up.
Universally, I'd imagine the group would be glad that Shuichi is back (and they'd probably prioritize making sure he recovers smoothly after sleeping for so long).
And that's where this scenario concludes for now.
Obviously, this probably wouldn't fit within V3 without some major adjustments, but I had a lot of fun imagining it!
If anyone has any more ideas for this scenario, feel free to share them, I'd love to hear!

V3 Hole Scenario (Discovering the Hole)
Expanding on this idea!
The Discovery of The Hole:
Shuichi and Maki are the first ones to discover the hole.
One morning, they walk to the dining hall together (for the daily breakfast meetings), when suddenly, Maki stops Shuichi.
Shuichi is about to question her, before he quickly figures out why Maki stopped him.
There is a giant hole in the ground that definitely wasn't there yesterday!
SHUICHI: “What is that?!”
MAKI: (bluntly) “It's a hole.”
SHUICHI: “I can see that, what's it doing there?”
They inspect the hole, and comment on how strange it is that they didn't hear anyone digging a hole last night.
Shuichi wonders if this is a motive. Maki responds by saying this seems a bit...tame for a motive.
Then again, if you fell in there, it would be much easier for you to get killed, seeing as you'd have nowhere to run.
Shuichi then says that they should warn the others about the hole.
He says Maki is correct in that it would be easier for someone to get killed if they fell in the hole, and he almost walked right in! Someone else could make that mistake if they aren't careful.
Maki agrees. Everyone's probably in the dining hall, so they can tell the others about the hole over breakfast.
Shuichi and Maki head to the dining hall. When they arrive, there are a few people missing.
Maybe they announce that they have something important to say before waiting for everyone else to arrive, or they decide to wait until everyone arrives before saying anything.
Eventually, all the surviving students are present.
...Except for Himiko.
Someone points out that Himiko isn't there, and the group ends up waiting for her.
After waiting for a while, Himiko still hasn't shown up. Someone in the group mentions the possibility that she got murdered, and a chill settles in the room.
MAKI: “Or she could've fallen in The Hole.”
All eyes in the room turn to Maki.
"What hole?"
Shuichi and/or Maki explain that on their way to the dining hall, they found a random hole in the ground.
Well, regardless of whether Himiko is dead, or has fallen in The Hole, or what have you, she is definitely missing. So the group decides to split up and search for her.
I'm thinking Kaito and Shuichi search together, and Shuichi ends up showing Kaito The Hole. It is at that moment they find Himiko! Alive (thank goodness)…but stuck in The Hole. And unable to get out.
Then...slowly but surely, nearly everyone else falls into The Hole.
Again, if anyone has any more ideas for this scenario, please share them, I'd love to hear!

Brainstorming ideas for how the V3 cast gets stuck in a hole
This script I wrote is making me think of ideas for how the V3 cast would get stuck in a hole.
The hole in question appears out of nowhere. It's just THERE one morning.
Himiko is the first to fall in.
Miu makes some contraption/gets an idea to get Himiko out, and maybe rallies some other characters to assist (Kibo is most likely one of them).
The contraption/idea doesn't work, and somehow causes Miu, plus everyone who helped her, to get stuck in the hole.
If Tenko's alive, she definitely attempts to get Himiko out of the hole, but probably falls in as a result.
Shuichi, Kokichi and Kaito are the last three to fall in.
Shuichi stands at the edge of the hole, looking at everyone who fell in, and is overcome with a sense of dread.
Kokichi then approaches him from behind and gives Shuichi a light shove as a jest.
However, the shove catches Shuichi off guard. He looses his balance, and in a panic, grabs onto the nearest thing.
Which just so happens to be Kokichi Ouma.
They both fall in. (Maybe Kokichi happens to land on top of Shuichi).
Kaito is uh, not happy that he just let his sidekick get shoved into a hole. (It's not your fault Kaito)
Kaito tries to rescue Shuichi from the hole, only to fall in himself.
Gonta and Maki avoid falling into the hole.
(After thinking over it, I'm led to believe that it would be really really hard to get Maki to fall into the hole.)
Gonta tries to get everyone out of the hole, but is unsuccessful for one reason or another.
Finally, Maki comes up with a plan, and gets Kaito and Shuichi out of the hole (maybe Gonta helps her!).
Kaito, Shuichi, and Maki then get a ladder and lower it into the hole, and that's how everyone else gets out of the hole.
If anyone has any more suggestions/ideas for this scenario, feel free to share them! I’d love to hear!
