Can you tell me more about the anatomy of Maria Vaz and... and... why is so vastly different in the comics??!

This came out very long and with a lot of images

Okay so, Initially she had a really awful design in the american comics. I’d say she almost looks human if it wasn’t by the bird feet and the fact her dad is a bird.

That was her first appearence and it set “”””standarts””” i guess for her design. 

I think the Human/Bird confusion was legit at the time too because when the brazilian comics started I’m pretty sure they pulled a Betty Boop and made her human (Also changed her name to Rosinha. idk why but they did. I guess they didn’t want her to be called Maria because it’s too much of a common name)

Then out of nowhere she started getting drawn with proportions that matched the other characters (kinda)? She still looked human-esque but it was an improvement????? or sorts??

(The right design almost has Jucika vibes, its ??cute? i think?)

I don’t have any theories forthe change in these, It might have been the ‘Código de ética’ thing, Wich was a code based on the Comics Code Authority? But yeah suddenly she looked normal-ish. 

And then they finally decided to make her a bird

In this era they kind went back and forth on keeping the design with non-human proportions and starting to make her have more human proportions again. It’s kinda akward to see her design switch between comics so much but at least they aren’t sexualized. 

While I do not like the design on the right, I don’t think it’s sexualized? Having a curvy body typed does not mean she is being sexualized, but It’s just so sad that it’s clear artists drew her like this because it was the only way they thought they could communite she’s a woman. 

The one on the left is okay? and I would say one of the best designs for her? Like she’s pink enough where she doesn’t look like an uncooked chicken with a wig, and the beak whie still the lipstick color is usually read as a beak. It still isn’t a good design in my opinion, It’s the best one just because the others were/are just awful to look at

Like her design was weird/bad already so now, that I would argue is sexualized, it became even worse. I don’t think I need to say how weird it is to use sex appeal in a childrens comic, but it’s specially gross how her design is even more sexualized on the cover, putting her in bikinis even when the main story doesn’t involve Rosinha or a beach at all? It’s uh! fucked up! But this design stayed like this until the end of the comics.

I need to be clear tho and say that the sexualization isn’t the only problem? Rosinha just looks akward in every drawing because she follows different anatomy and design rules just beacause she’s a female character 

For example the first panel and last pannel looks so weird and disconnected, like Rosinha and José aren’t from the same comic. It’s because they insist on doing whatever with José and making him as toony as needed while desperately trying to keep Rosinha human-adjacent, her head looks too small at all times in comparisson to other characters, her beak-lips are weird, she has hair??? and her flesh skintone is off putting. (Middle pannel is there just to show that she can look relatively normal sometimes)

And her having a chest/waist isn’t the issue here either, cause there’s plenty of characters in the comic who do and are not sexualized (middle one has the same issue with the flesh color 😔)

And having a more human body type can look okay too! If everyone on the cast looks like they belong in the same universe (Look how Parceiro and Dickie have more ““realistic”“ body proportions while Netúnia, Olimpia and Ari are more toony, but all of them fit in the same style)

Her new design in the Culturama comics look better but it still has the same issues that it always had (colors/proportions/etc.)

As to why any of her designs were changed I don’t specifically know, but I’d guess it’s to fit whatever role she has on the current story. Although I like these comics, female characters aren’t really treated with the same care as male characters (given that she’s the only recurring woman in the comic and still barely considered part of the main cast)

Rosinha is more of a plot device than a character itself, so her changing, design and personality wise, makes sense on a certain level i suppose

How to help your artists - The circle of influence.

So over the past 10-15 years, as I’ve been trying to branch out, grow a following and sell commissions, there’s one phrase I’ve heard more than any other.

“I’d love to support you, but I have no money.”

And you know, I get that. I understand. I don’t have any either. But here’s the secret. The most powerful and useful thing you can do to support an artist? It doesn’t cost a penny. Reblog their posts, signal boost their commissions, advertise their patreon./ If you have commissioned them, or do support their patreon? Write a review, tell your friends, share their links. Keep circulating the tapes.

Every post is an artist laying themselves bare before you. You have the power to make them into somebody. You can make them into a big name, you can help bring them an income. All you have to do is share.

Here’s a handy infographic.

If artists get only likes, they never get any exposure. They find no followers, they make no money, and feel worthless.

But with reblogs, who knows how far they could reach? New people could see their work and follow them, and maybe one person will spot that commissions post or patreon promo, and maybe offer to help support them. And it didn’t even cost those followers a penny to reblog the post.

So please, anyone out there. If you enjoy an artist’s work and can’t afford to give any monetary support, you can give them something more powerful. A voice.
