As for the rest:
Ianto getting a very rare compliment from Owen for saving Tosh by performing CPR
In “Into the Silence” the team is attempting to catch an alien who is attracted to some voice frequency (if I remember correctly) and they choose Ianto to sing since (I think) he was a choirboy at some point
Owen mentions that Ianto can “knock a Weevil down with a well-placed blow” in “Another Life”

Ianto: “What I think is they might have been offered something even better than death?”
Jack: “Better than death? *realisation* Ianto…”
Ianto: *interrupts realisation and goes on*

I know who Mandy turns out to be but I still applaud her for standing up to Jack and his treatment of Ianto. And I do believe Mandy is sincere most of the time. She does care for Ianto which makes it another loss for him… Give Ianto a break, he’s broken

Tosh and Ianto in ‘Greeks Bearing Gifts’
Tosh ripping off the pendant after hearing Ianto’s thoughts is so cleverly done. She just sees how hard he’s trying to project that he’s alright when he’s absolutely not and actually succeeds in that, just for her to enter his mind and render his efforts null. I think she finally feels ashamed because the thoughts of others were not unexepcted to her and thus she didn’t feel like she was violating their privacy. But Ianto’s inner and outer personas are so different that she finally starts to understands her wrongdoing

Ianto Jones and Danny Pink
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Loving to draw parallels between TW and DW characters, I am amused it took me so long to draw one between Ianto Jones and Danny Pink. I might not know all about Danny, since I haven’t ever listened to DW audios and am not that deep in the fandom as in the TW one, but from what we see in the tv-episodes (and it’s a shame we don’t get enough with Danny) I think he and Ianto are alike in many ways.
For both Ianto and Danny, saving their loved ones is a priority over saving the world. They treat love with an almost soldier-like mentality - protection and loyalty first. Both Ianto and Danny died twice. Both have died the second time protecting their partners and one could say that saving the world was a nice bonus to that. Danny: “I didn’t die saving the world, Doctor. I died saving Clara. The rest of you just got lucky.” Ianto does not explicitly say it, but his actions in the House of the Dead all but scream it.
For both Ianto and Danny, the one thing that could have swayed their focus from ensuring the happiness of their loved ones was saving the lives of innocent children
Ianto and Danny are some of the few who are not really impressed with the Doctor but tolerate him for their partners’ sakes (honestly, if they ever met, they would absolutely bond over this particular one).
Last but not least - their fondness for pink shirts
P. S. Their lovers are *kinda* immortal

Don't ever forget
Captain Jack Harkness, the very dashing hero, was ready and willing to abandon his world-saving duty THREE TIMES just because he was afraid to live without Ianto

“That had been in the early days, when Ianto blushed easily. “They’re called submariners,” he’d muttered. “Not sailors.” Jack smiled at the memory. There was always a hint of the pedant about Ianto. Underneath that soft exterior, there was steel. Very few people got to know that. Those that did usually regretted it. “He’ll be okay,” Gwen said quietly, joining him by the circular window in his office which overlooked the Hub. It was gone midnight and the vast chamber was in semi-darkness. On the far side they could see the glow of the lights in the Hot House, and Ianto, still sitting there watching his plant. “We’ll find a way.” “Sure. We could just storm in and drag him out if we wanted to,” Jack sighed. “That’s what Owen wants.” “Since when did you take any notice of what Owen wants? "There has to be a better way, Gwen. I don’t want him hurt.” “He’ll fall asleep eventually. He has to. That’s what the police do in siege situations. Wait long enough, and they’ll just… nod off.” “Ianto won’t. He’s tougher than he looks. And that plant’s got a grip on him. I don’t know how, but I’m going to break that grip, Gwen. That I promise.””

“Owen looked embarrassed and backed away. The American took his place, filling my vision. The stench of power was overwhelming. “You’ve been causing us all sorts of trouble,” he said. “Not only have you killed two people but you’ve hurt Ianto, and only I’m allowed to do that.” I glanced over his shoulder at the man I’d beaten up in my mum’s kitchen. He blushed.”

Ianto’s Mother: Glenda Jones.
We always talk about how miserable Ianto’s childhood must have been (and it probably has), but from what we learned from “Broken”, I think at least Ianto had the greatest mom. And even though, he was somewhat cold to her, I believe he knew that too.
There are only three canonical mentions of Ianto’s mum, as I know of. Here they are:
Ianto telling Gwen how he discussed “ABBA” with his mom from “The Twilight Streets”. “Gwen stopped again. ‘I dunno which scares me more – that your mam worked you out ten years before you did, or that the fourteen-year-old Ianto Jones used the phrase “poptastic danceability” without getting beaten up.’ Ianto stopped suddenly. ‘She didn’t work me out, Gwen. No one has. And if I ever do, I’ll let you know.’”
Ianto remembering an angry “food fight” his parents started on his birthday in front of his friends. “Ianto’s worst ever birthday party had included a food fight.  Watching drunken, rowing parents throw trifle at each other in a screaming fury while he gathered his friends to him, shielding as many as possible from being hit by a stray pickled onion. He never ever wanted to see that much mess covering so many people again.”
And then we have “Broken”. Here we finally get to know her personally, so to say. And we learn that his mom cared about him a lot.
What I find noteworthy is that when things turned to shit in the pub’s cellar and Ianto was crying, he was missing his mom.
Ianto: SHUT UP! JUST SHUT UP! NOBODY MOVE! I… I… I’ve gotta get away… I’ve gotta get away from all of this. (He starts to cry again) I need it all to stop, I need to be somewhere else, I need to be… oh God… (He’s crying now) I want my mum… I just…
But after it was over, he didn’t even want to answer her phone call.
Ianto: (Walking away from the bar) I did it… I did it. It’s all over… (He laughs) I got my second chance! (His mobile rings and he checks it) No. I can’t speak to you. Just go away. (He hangs it up) Thank you. (It rings again) Oh god! (He answers it) Yes?

The House of the Dead (again and always)
It is impressive that no matter how many times I listen to Janto interactions I always feel it like the first time: the grief, the desperation, the giddiness - all comes back to me. Once again, I listened to the House of the Dead and got re-broken by it. But there is something else.
I think I heard the exact moment that is so perfectly Ianto Jones that it would have made me love him even more if it was possible. I’m talking about the realization and fear in his voice when he listens to Jack’s plan of closing the rift. "You're not planning on coming back, are you?" is said in a very different sober manner than Ianto’s previous lines (GDL is truly amazing). And doesn't that perfectly sum up Ianto Jones? Look, just a moment ago he experienced something so terrible and heartbreaking - he’d learned about his own death and probably (falsely) confirmed for himself that he doesn't mean anything to Jack (although Jack explains how much Ianto means to him, he goes about it so "horribly" wrong). I can understand Ianto's anger - he just heard that person he loves had not attended his funeral. And for someone, whose biggest insecurity is not being remembered this is such a hard blow. But what is so beautifully Ianto is that the moment he realizes the danger to Jack, he pulls himself together, hides all his feelings and starts playing a devastating con that he knows will bring about his death -  the very death he was so horrified to learn about just a minute ago. I feel like in that moment he still doubts Jack's love for him but it doesn’t matter to him anymore. Priority is to save Jack (I think that saving the world for Ianto will always come second to saving Jack and I find that beautiful).
This ability to go from devastation and anger to an act of pure love in a second is what makes Ianto Jones the best Whoniverse character for me - me, who doesn’t think there is anything more beautiful than loyal love.
