More Gordon Ramsey than Joey From Friends! This one is on physio...
One of the significant limitations of learning (and teaching) Physiotherapy at university is the fact that it encompasses so much, that it allows little time and guidance to critique each area in great detail.
For example, a 45-minute lecture on exercise prescription and strength training doesn’t exactly make you a “movement expert”. That’s like filling a pot noodle up with hot water and say you’re an expert in Asian cuisine.
It seems to me, that the primary focus is more on “what” to think and less on “how” or even “why” to think. Recipes on how to help people get home from the hospital without doing any harm.
As a result, it can be tempting for a lot of Edinburgh Physios to fill their arsenal with lots of tools, such as needles, manipulations, electricity and fancy massages etc. etc. As a fresh graduate, it can make sense that these passive therapies will arm you enough to help you to treat anything that walks through the treatment room door.
However, you should be very sceptical of anything you believe simply because it “makes sense”. It makes sense that the earth is flat (when I look out my window, it is!), it also makes sense that the sun orbits the earth (when I look out my window, it does!) (the example is stolen from Erik Meira’s Hip course).
Science is the best tool for enabling us to acknowledge that many things which “make sense” are in fact incorrect.  In fact, science is the most valuable and essential tool in any competent Physio’s toolbox because science helps us see things for what they really are without dangerously relying solely on our senses and what makes sense. (Discover our services)
Ok, so what’s Joey from friends got to do with Science? Surely I should be talking about Ross…
Tumblr media
Joey doesn’t share food, but Joey is also not the fussiest when it comes to preparing food.
We might not expect Joey to do very well if he owned his restaurant because he’s not a chef and just because something tastes good to you doesn’t mean you should use it in any recipe.
I would argue that becoming an excellent Physiotherapist is a lot like becoming an excellent chef, who makes delicious nutrient dense food for their customers. Check out the physiotherapy Edinburgh tweet from Health by Science.
When you start out you need a supervisor to navigate you around the kitchen (different body parts), to teach you about how different ingredients work with each other (tools) and also which ones don’t. You then need to know how to put these all together in a skilful way which the consumer will not only enjoy but will get long-term benefits from (a person-centred approach/therapeutic alliance).
Now to begin with you might need to follow a few recipes under the guidance of your sous-chef or maybe even head chef. But if you want to become a better cook then you’re going to have to start learning “how” to cook and “why” certain ingredients work well together and also “why” some ingredients are harmful to our long-term health and some are very good for our long-term health.
In this example let’s assume that the customer who’s walked into your restaurant wants a delicious dish that not only makes them feel good but also helps them to look better and perform better, long-term.
In the world of Physiotherapy, there are only three ingredients that have the efficacy to achieve this as outlined in Adam Meakin’s and Erik Meira’s Hip and Shoulder course, and they are:
Advice and education
Load management
Get strong
A contentious issue is a use of massage, which is kind of like sugar. It’s not inherently evil and in the fact can be quite useful if you’re doing a lot of exercises. If you’re not exercising, however, then while it might make you feel good short-term, it’s doing nothing for your health and performance goals long-term.
So while you might sprinkle a little sugar in the dish, to sweeten it up or maybe make those veggies in the stir fry taste a bit better. Without the three main ingredients, you are being robbed of any long-term sustainable improvements in your health and wellbeing.
So why be more like Gordon Ramsey? He’s a dick, isn’t he?
I’m not sure because I’ve never met him. Whether you like or loathe his approach to training and critiquing other chefs or not, the healthy scepticism used is essential if any chef is to help other chefs, sous chefs, and trainee chefs to create a better food industry.
Of course, there are many ways to critically evaluate someone’s work, but I guess when things are that bad, some individuals can’t help but use the odd profanity now and again.
Tumblr media
You might not like Gordon Ramsey, but he’s an incredibly accomplished chef who has helped an enormous number of other chefs. Instead, you might prefer Jamie Oliver or John Torode (who? exactly).
The one thing they all have in common is that they critique each other’s work using science-based principles to develop their own and others culinary skills.
If we don’t take this approach, then we’ll end up with a bunch of Joey’s in charge of a restaurant with a long history and good reputation. Funny for a short while but an absolute shambles if we don’t let the Gordon Ramsey’s in to stir some much-needed thought and debate.
Think of this clip below as Adam Meakins with Critical Thinkers Vs. Pseudo-science Physiotherapists.

Question - Is Alcohol Abuse Alcoholism?
Asking the hard questions about alcoholism...
Read my other articles here and here about alcohol, its effects and recovery strategies.
Many people think that alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the same thing. Though they have similarities between them, there are significant differences between these two drinking problems. You should remember that not all alcohol use leads to abuse. If you drink in moderation, then it would not have been an issue. Those who abuse alcohol are not necessarily alcohol addicted people. Too much or excessive drinking can lead to alcoholism.
Tumblr media
The signs of alcohol abuse include sneaking drinks, gulping first peg of drinks, frequent memory blanks at the time of drinking, reluctant to discuss the drinking habits, and feelings of guilt over drinking. Besides, there are some other signs of this that include late entry in working place or school due to hangovers, frequent injuries that took place at the time of excessive drinking, trouble with authorities for drinking and driving or aggressive behavior. The other signs of alcohol abuse are drunkenness, drowsiness, slurred speech, problems regarding memory and aggression.
On the other hand alcoholism is a disease that caused due to alcohol addiction. The alcoholic person will feel the need to drink more and more. And they will not be satisfied with the quantity of drink even when they drank excessively. The person will have a strong feeling of requirement of drink. They will experience a lack of control. When their drinking habit is being stopped, there will be heavy withdrawal symptoms.
youtube
There are some factors that could lead to excessive drinking and eventually lead to alcoholism. Generic and biological factors are considered responsible for this disease. There are certain generic factors that can compel a person to be more vulnerable to alcoholism. If you have an imbalance of brain chemicals, you may be more prone to alcoholism. Social as well as cultural factors are also responsible for the disease like alcoholism. The way media advertise alcohol today that drinking alcohol is just nothing. Some emotional factors are also taken into consideration when the reasons for this disease have been pointed out. It is found that there are several stress hormones that should be associated with alcoholism. High stress levels, anxiety can also lead people to excessive drinking. Besides, there are other factors like depression, low self-esteem can often lead a person to drink more and more. You can also be habituated on seeing your partner or friend who used to drink on a regular basis.
It is very unusual that a non alcoholic person will become addicted simply by having just one peg of drink. Indeed, alcoholism is something that does not result from frequent drinking habit, but from a continuous, excessive drinking habit. Now that we are all aware of the problems regarding alcohol abuse, it is very important to consult with the counselor for assistance. Going to rehabilitation can bring a great change in the life of an alcoholic people. It is your benefit to be honest to your doctor and tell all the truth regarding your symptoms and drinking behaviors so that they help you out of this problem.

The Facts - What You Need to Know About King Alcohol
Some history and starting, unknown points about this global liquid...
Read my previous post about alcohol rehabilitation
The history of alcohol is very ancient as this drink has been consumed by almost all civilizations for thousands of years. The effects of alcohol can be good for your health if consumed at a moderate amount, otherwise this can lead to death if consumed at an excessive amount. If a person consumes alcohol at an excessive amount it may result a number of unpleasant symptoms.
Tumblr media
In some cases, alcohol can be used as medicine. If anyone is having problems regarding heart, kidney, then alcohol can be used. One tablespoon of this liquor will help eliminate the vessel and muscular spasms. Studies have proved that the moderate consumption of alcohol supposes to decrease the rate of heart attacks and strokes.
In the recent study it has been found that the moderate drinkers had significantly lower the heart diseases than those who do not drink. But all these good things happen only when you drink moderately. So naturally the question comes what amount of alcohol is a safe dose. According to the World Health Organization, a man should drink not more than thirty ml alcohol, a woman should have twenty ml alcohol per day.
If alcohol is not consumed at a moderate amount there can be many health problems occurred. Persistent and continuous drinking can severely damage the liver as well as other organs of our body. Consumption of alcohol can bring several incidents like diabetes, cognitive disorders, birth defects, damaging of nervous system, and insanity.
Unlike many other drugs, alcohol is only mildly addicting in and of itself, but it should be consumed at a moderate level. It has dangerous effects if one becomes addicted to it. Some people believe it a wrong way that the addiction to alcohol is genuinely a physical one. It is true that alcohol treatment like alcohol detox addresses the physical addiction to the drink. Alcohol detox uses medication to lessen the worse effects of withdrawal such as inclination to vomit, sweating, and trembling. There are misconceptions what constitutes being an alcoholic and who benefits from alcohol treatment. It is true that the alcoholics will get benefit alcohol treatment but those who starts drinking lately can also be benefited.
Someone who is addicted to alcohol is likely that they cannot stop drinking through their own choice. People who are developing a problem may feel that they are finding it more difficult to stop once they have had a drink- action at this stage can prevent full-blown alcoholism developing. Alcoholism or the physical dependence on alcohol is a kind of disease that gradually takes over our body. The exact meaning of alcoholism is when somebody willingly drinks alcohol after knowing its detrimental consequences. It is medically described as a person who is unable to control the urge to drink alcohol. Therefore, it is the tendency to drink alcohol compulsively while not being able to consider its negative aspects. As alcohol has a devastating effects so do not wait for alcohol to take over your life. You should seek medical treatment and rehabilitation immediately.

Alcohol Rehab and the Harmful Effects of Alcohol Addiction
Booze is a global, legalized killer, wrecking families, health, finances and everything in-between...
There are many alcohol abuse effects that can be very dangerous. The effects of drinking extreme measures of alcohol not only has consequences for the drinker but it also has its bad effects on the family or whoever else associates around the alcoholic. The effects can be both psychological and physical. If one used to drink alcohol regularly at an excessive quantity, its effect can be devastating.
Tumblr media
The consumption of alcohol can do a lot of harm on our body. Our brain can be impaired from the effects of alcohol. When a person drinks alcohol, our stomach absorbs it, and then it gradually enters to our bloodstream and consequently reaches all the tissues.
Here’s some information on addiction counselling and therapy.
The effects of this beverage on the human body depend on the number of factors that include the person’s weight, sex, age, and the quantity of food and alcohol consumed. The consumption of alcohol affects on our body in various ways. It increases the workload of the heart. As a result, irregular heart beat and high blood pressure can be seen. The way our heart pumps the blood can be affected by the consumption of it. In extreme cases of alcoholism, it can lead to shortness of breath, irregular heart rhythm, and even in some cases cardiac arrest.
The intake of alcohol primarily effects on our vision. Our vision can be blurred, and in the case of excessive drinking one may not able to see. Our sleeping can be hampered due to the consumption of alcohol. Alcohol-induced sleep does not relax our mind and body the way normal sleep does. In fact, it causes fatigue, and irritability. The regular intake of alcohol can surely do harm to our kidneys. Kidneys regulate bodily fluids and the supply of minerals to the body. Any malfunction regarding this, will lead to drastic energy levels.
We are all aware of the effects of alcohol on our liver. It may cause the cirrhosis of the liver. The impact of excessive consumption of alcohol on the pancreas and gut may lead to severe inflammation for pancreas. The loss of inhibition can be occurred because of the intake of excessive alcohol. The person’s behavior changes noticeably after he or she consumed a bit. The reduced inhibitions can put a person at higher risk for actions they would otherwise anticipate in, such as sexual activity, continued drinking, or illegal drug use. You can find out about alcohol rehab with many of the worlds leading rehabilitation centres and self-help support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous.
It is seen that the addiction of alcohol can reduce the control of our muscle. Impaired judgement and poor coordination are the physical effects of alcohol abuse that may lead to falls and accidents. As alcohol affects our brain, the memory loss for a certain time can also be seen. The alcoholic person may not able to remember certain situations and events after drinking. When alcohol level in our blood became 0.50, or more than that, there is a risk of coma for the person, which can be life threatening. And at this point there is a chance of respiratory paralysis or even death in some cases.
