i wrote a twin cinema poem about two gay soldiers in wwi
context: the two sides, read separately, are the two soldiers thinking about their futures with each other. when read together, it's a reflection of their final thoughts when they die together struck by bullets <3

I know there’s already a lot of actual factual information out there about how ChatGPT is bad and students shouldn’t be using it and I know I don’t really need to throw my opinion in too, but here it goes.
I really think kids who are growing up with access to ChatGPT to do their schoolwork for them are losing out on an important development in decision-making ability, and I am particularly talking about the ones who think it’s ok because “I don’t use it for EVERYTHING, I do most stuff myself, it’s just when I run out of time to do an assignment so I have to use it” <- direct quote I’ve heard from many, many, many students.
Because we used to end up in situations like that back before ChatGPT too. We would also run out of time, either through poor planning or through underestimation of our workload. We also ended up with a 20 page paper that was due the next day that we hadn’t even started.
And that was when we had to decide. Either write something rushed and probably poor quality and turn it in on time, or take a little more time and make it better but turn it in late and accept whatever punishment there was for late assignments. Or you could try to talk to the teacher about it and she if there’s any chance in hell they’ll award you an extension.
The point is, we had options, and none of them were very good, but we had to pick one. There was no way out. We had no escape door. We had to make a decision when none of the options were great, and I think that’s an important experience to have. By not having an escape route, we had to just take our punishment and hopefully learn from the experience. But even if we didn’t learn a damn thing and we ended up in the same situation for the next assignment, we still made a tough decision.
I see all these medical students justifying their use of ChatGPT to do assignments under the explanation that “they don’t do it for everything, it’s just because this time they had no time to do this assignment”.
I just can’t help but wonder if there could be some negative consequences to them always having an easy way out and never having to make a difficult decision between two bad outcomes.

For all of the northerners that stood up for Texas during our freeze and said, "Don't make fun of them, they've never dealt with this before. Their infrastructure isn't made for snow and freezing."
This one is for you.
Where I live 108°F with 80% humidity with no wind is normal.
Pacific North West is dealing historic best waves 35-40°C or 95-105F.
First of all. Don't make fun of them for bitching about the heat. Just like Texas isn't built for a freeze and our pipes burst, Pacific North West isn't built for heat and a lot of their homes don't have AC.
If you live somewhere with a high humidity like 80+ HUMIDITY IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. The "humidity makes it feel cooler" is a lie once it gets beyond a point.
If you live somewhere with a lower humidity, misters are nice to cool off outside.
Once you get over 90°F (32°C) a fan will not help you. It's just pushing around hot air. (I mean if you can't afford a small AC unit because they're expensive as hell, by all means a fan is better than nothing).
If you have pets, those portable AC units aren't safe. If your pets destroy the outtake thing, it'll leak CO2. Window units are safer.
Window AC units will let mosquitoes or other small bugs in. Sucks, but that's life.
Now is not the time to me modest. If you have to cover for religious reasons, by all means. If you don't, I've seen people wear short shorts and a swim top. It's not trashy if it keeps you from getting heat stroke.
If you do have to cover up for religious reasons, look for elephant pants or something similar. They're made with a breathable material.
Shade is better than no shade, but that shit it just diet sun after some point. Don't think shade will save you from heat stroke.
I know the "drink your water" is a fun meme now, but if you're sweating excessively you need electrolytes. Drink Gatorade, Powerade, or Pedialite PLEASE. I don't care if you're fucking sitting in one spot all day. That shit WILL save you from heat stroke.
Most importantly. RESEARCH THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEAT STROKE AND HEAT EXHAUSTION PLEASE!
If you're diabetic and can't drink Gatorade, mix water, fruit juice, and either lite salt or pink salt
If you can afford it, cover windows with thick curtains to insulate the house
If you have tile floors, lay on them with skin to tile contact. If you don't, laying your head on cool counters works too.
If the temperature where you're at is hotter than your body temperature, don't wear heat wicking clothing. Moisture wicking is safe though.
Check your medication labels. Many make you more susceptible to sun and heat
-Room temperature water will get into your body faster. This is something I learned doing marching band in high summer in Georgia, and it saved all of our asses. Sip it, don't gulp it, especially if you're getting into the red; same goes for whatever fluid you're drinking. And just in general drink during the day.
-If you are moving from an air conditioned space to an un-air conditioned space, if at all possible try to make the shift gradual. When my dad and I were working outside and in un-ac houses a few years ago, he'd turn the air down to low in the truck about ten-fifteen minutes before we got where we were going. This way your body doesn't go from low low temps to high temps. S'bad for you.
-If you can, keep your lights off during the day. Light bulbs may not generate a lot of heat, but the difference is noticeable when it gets hot enough. I literally only turn my bedroom light on in the evening when it gets too dark.
Don't be afraid to just like... pour water on yourself if you need to. The evaporation will cool you off.
Put your hand to the cement for 15 seconds. If you can't handle the heat, it'll burn your dog's paws. Don't let them walk on it.
Dogs with flat faces are more prone to heat stroke. Don't leave them out unsupervised.
Frozen fruit is delicious in water.
Wet/Cold hat/handkerchief on your head/neck will help you stay cool.
Pickle juice is great for electrolytes! You can even make pickle juice Popsicles!
Heat exhaustion is more, "drink water and get you cooled off." Heat stroke is more "Oh my god call 911."
Image Description provided by @loveize
[Image description: an infographic showing the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The graphic is labeled "Heat Dangers: First Warning." Signs of heat exhaustion: faint or dizzy, excessive sweating, cool, pale, clammy skin, rapid, weak pulse, muscle cramps. If you think you or someone else may be experiencing heat exhaustion, get to a cool, air-conditioned place, drink water if conscious, and take a cool shower or use cold compress. Signs of heat stroke: throbbing headache, no sweating, red, hot, dry skin, rapid, strong pulse, may lose consciousness. If you think you or someone else may be experiencing heat stroke, call 911. End description]
Be safe.

The culture of basing the worth and quality of a fanfic off its length, popularity, and how frequent the updates are/if it’s finished is extremely damaging to fanfic authors, especially since most of you saying this read a lot of angst filled fics and don’t realise how emotionally draining that is to write. Not engaging with a fic because it’s not finished is damaging AO3 as a community. Engagement motivates the writer to keep writing it. Most of your favourite authors are teenagers or young adults in education, and have more things they should be doing than writing that fic. They do it out of genuine love for the fandom and don’t get paid. They don’t owe you shit. Stop treating AO3 like it’s an algorithmic platform, good≠popular and nothing can go “viral” on AO3, it is an archive. Hits and Kudos mean nothing about the actual quality of a fic, stop pretending like they do.
Fanfic authors owe you properly tagged fics, and nothing else. That is the only valid reason to be feel frustration at a fic author, for any other reason, you are a shitty person.

On ‘Man’s Best Friend’ Sabrina Carpenter’s new album.
This is not meant to be inflammatory and I kindly welcome any criticism of my thinking and am open to respectful debate as always!! This is in no way a means to slap on some proverbial chastity belt or purity culture on Sabrina Carpenter. Just because women are women and have been historically oppressed, doesn’t mean that they are exempt from criticism.
However that being said, this new album cover is unconscionable. Her on the floor beside a FACELESS man with her hair being dragged implies, as she intended, that she is man’s best friend. She is the dog, notably a female dog ie a bitch. Firstly, the faceless man beside her inherently suggests to audiences but particularly the masculine one, that any man could take that role - even themselves. It’s some sort of twisted, male gaze fan wish fulfilment she’s handing them on a silver platter? It’s a harmless thing for women to reclaim the word ‘bitch’, an insult directed at women BY men for centuries - but to indulge in and cement that imagery with a male centred, over-sexed submissive concept is really icky in a world where women are losing rights in even the most developed of countries.
Secondly, the idea that she is man’s best friend, the dog, implies that her world revolves around men. The comparison she’s made is loud and clear, a dog and a master is in human terms, a woman and a man. We walk when they pull our hair and wait for them by the door to come home - trained and groomed.
I can’t decipher whether this was meant to be some sort of petplay thing, which arguably could align with SC’s unabashed sexuality - or just a concept of a male-centred woman panting at the feet of a man. Either way, pretty fucking despicable. A lot of brain rotters are claiming this is satire but that begs the question (that even if this is satire): is all satire really good? Especially if it bolsters further the platform of the concept its satirising? The truth of the matter is is that those sweaty incels sitting in their basement wanking to this image won’t give a fuck if it is satire or not. All they will perceive is a woman publicly publishing her acceptance of submission and (in what is their view) a woman’s rightful place.
Furthermore, to those very people crying ‘it’s satire!’, where the hell do you get the right to decide the intention of someone else’s work? That is the auteur and SC’s team’s privilege and responsibility, otherwise anyone could and DOES unfortunately go around and call everything they dislike satire. Use your fucking critical thinking oh my god. She has not even hinted that this is satire and I truly do not believe it is. In my view, this is her taking her sexuality (which before was never a problem for me or the vast majority) to the next level of extreme.
The very same fan base that accuse everyone of infantilising her because she is short are the ones claiming that this is satire or making excuses that she is just a girl!! She’s just embracing sexuality. But the irony is is that these claims IN AND OF THEMSELVES are also infantilising her by removing all responsibility and accountability, claiming that anyone uncomfortable with the imagery is anti-feminist or slut shaming. Let’s be clear: Sabrina Carpenter is not a child. She is a fully fledged, fully grown woman and is entirely aware of her own consequences. She knew this would be the reception and knew that people would be RIGHTLY upset at this image, yet decided to go about it in what is frankly the most pathetic way to gain traction and hype for upcoming work: rage bait.
Everything is sensationalised now and she’s playing into it for her own fucking profit instead of being for the girls.
