as someone who's favourite part of writing is dialogue, here's what I like to do 🕺
if there's only two characters present, you really don't even need dialogue tags, just one for the first person to speak. then the rest of the dialogue is interspersed with action.
"How long have you been awake?" whispered Atlas.
“Didn’t sleep.”
“How come?”
Kit put his arm under his head like a bony pillow. “I’m used to the great outdoors. I’m surprised you managed these harsh conditions compared to your lavish lifestyle at home.”
“I’ve never been so tired in all my life. I could have collapsed anywhere.” He yawned, as if to prove his point.
definitely a 'sighed' overuser I will admit but my babies are tired
in like 5th class we were introduced to the concept of not using said all the time in creative writing and we weren't allowed use it anymore and the teacher put up a poster with 'Said is dead' written on it with a load of replacements for said on it and now whenever I use said in writing I feel like I'm rebelling
