2023 / Vancouver Island
micro/macro-chasms/cosms (reaction/response + chaotic order & some arrangements of things)
The thing is, each isolated tide pool holds it’s own spacetime-zone depending on the daily/yearly tide changes and shifting of the plates. Neap tide proved to be the most active - or at least visible to me in late summer. It's when the sun and moon are briefly at right angles from each other. The atomic clocks within these individual creatures is probably fast and fleeting, their umwelt perhaps driven by adaptation, which is not intentional, it just is.

...these were my interesting times!
Another side of the Venice Biennale. 44 days on-site. The sea birds, cafe paradiso, visiting Tintoretto and Bellini, sleeping in a floating city and the hard working people of Venice were my saving grace!

Back to casting heavy metal powders infused into plaster molds of fossilized chiton shells and reconstructed invertebrate lifeforms with secret chambers, lights and doorways. And, a totally new painting. The formulas are getting closer to something else...

Here are things no one sees...”Mars” at Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig, 2018.
When I do these painting constructions or dioramas, I dance a lot and hit the wall too. The most intense moments are when I’m alone and on the weekends or after hours and the outcome is always unpredictable. It’s worthwhile to set-up the camera on the tripod while working.
This time-zone is personal and an important part of adapting to an environment for me as a painter.
I think of these works as historical since each landscape is totally different, researched and created on-site by hand in different locations, and the paintings change as I go. Then, the works are destroyed at the end of the exhibition and never remade in the same way.
The experience is only seen through photo-memory-archive, and super senses are at peak-speed while there too, so I crash and forget some of these things when I return home!
It’s often disappointing working inside institutions. Authorship is questioned and artists are categorized, maybe because these works evolve on-site, and the painting process is exposed. I think painting in general is understood the least, but criticized the most.
In the end from daybreak to night time, I learn a lot about myself, cook meals at night, and new stories unfold.

In the studio, a fragmented scale model of an imagined Marscape has been in process for my next diorama landscape.
Starting September 24, it will become human-size in Leipzig, Germany with Dominique alongside other works by Martial, Marie and Julien.
There have been many tests in the studio and changes to this landscape to adapt to working inside the glass space at Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst.
I’ve been looking closely at the geology of the Atacama desert, valley of the moon in Chile, the deserts of Wadi Rum, Jordan, and the red sand dunes of the Libyan desert and its seven pillars, basalt columns.
This one will be done with minimal color over the charcoal drawing using dry pigments, iron oxide, raw sienna and graphite, the 2D and 3D will come together and have hand-made (nickel-iron) meteorite fragments, two moons and painted shadows.
