Monster, Magic, Unexpected Ally. What could go wrong?
Hello guys! I know most of you are here for fun OH fan fic, but if you are also into urban fantasy, check out my book?😜

What if trying your best wasn't enough... Lia thought she was good at her job. She thought she had figured out her magic. She thought she could help with her magic. Maybe not… A good magical agent wouldn't fail. A not-good-enough one couldn't even save themselves. Lia wasn't planning to be the latter, but she wasn't the only one that could plan. The city was deeper and larger than she could've imagined. She could spend her time thinking, she could spend time getting scared. The claws and the fangs weren't waiting. The lives couldn't wait. The monsters were in the city, was Lia's magic enough to stop them? The collision is an action-packed urban fantasy story with a slow burn romantic subplot, there will be a HEA at the end of the series. This book features snarky and fun characters with lots of banters. The collision is the first book in The hidden order of magic: shaken series.
It is available on all retailers, LINK
I had fun writing it and working with my editors. I hope you will also enjoy it?
PS. OH3 is coming and I am so excited! *shout through the roof*

(Chap 13. OH AU 4) - Unpaid Help
1st of March, 2023
At 12:44PM on Wednesday, Ethan found himself at Thomas’ apartment building, a short ten minutes from Open Heart. Why was he there? Well, he was the closest person Denise and Thomas could think of to reach to go check on Teddy and Mrs. Fuller. They feared the worst after Thomas didn’t get his usual phone call from Mrs. Fuller, when she would check in at 12:30PM. She also didn’t pick up his calls when he called, which meant something must’ve happened.
Thomas was about to run home himself when Denise suggested they called Ethan instead, since he was much closer and could get to them a lot quicker. And if something had, in fact, happened to Mrs. Fuller, Ethan could take her and Teddy back to Open Heart with him. Sienna was at Open Heart and she was great with kids, so she could help watch Teddy until Thomas could get there. Naveen was well-informed of Thomas’ unique predicament, Thomas telling him everything nine days ago. And as of five minutes ago, Thomas caught him up on the current situation; it was without hesitation that Naveen agreed to give him the rest of the day off if needed.
Ethan felt his heart leap into his throat when he got to the fourth floor and heard a small child wailing from inside apartment ‘4B’. He tried the door handle first, which was unsurprisingly locked. Thomas didn’t know if Mrs. Fuller had a spare key hidden somewhere, so Ethan had no idea where to look either. The only option was to break the door down, but Ethan was afraid Teddy or Mrs. Fuller was behind said door. He pressed his ear to the door. The wailing seemed far enough away. It was just a risk he was going to have to take, especially if Mrs. Fuller was unconscious inside.
“My name is Dr. Ethan Ramsey, I was sent by Thomas Bryson. Mrs. Fuller, Teddy. If someone inside and can open the door for me, please do so otherwise I’m going to have to break the door down. Mrs. Fuller?” He waited for a response, but the only thing he could hear was Teddy’s cries.
What if Mrs. Fuller was just- No, it couldn’t be. The child wouldn’t be wailing like that if everything was okay. He was scared, it could be heard. Ethan needed to get inside that apartment and he needed to do it now.
“Goddammit.”
Ethan quickly assessed the door. It was sturdy, but not so sturdy that kicking it in would be an impossible task. It also swung inwards, like most residential buildings, which increased his chances. Locating the weakest point of the door, he stepped a leg’s length back, drove the heel of his standing foot into the ground and kicked with his dominant foot. His foot landed flat on the surface, a thud heard. It was on the third kick that he heard wood splintering and drove his shoulder into the door, busting it open.
Ethan spotted the four year old first. He looked terrified, crouched near the couch, peaking out from behind the armrest. “It’s okay, Teddy. Do you remember me? We met at the supermarket a few days ago. You were going to make banana pancakes and Dr. Hogan-” Realization washed over the child and he ran towards Ethan, flinging his arms around his leg. “It’s alright, I’ve got you.”
There was something burning on the stove, the fridge door was open, and Mrs. Fuller was unconscious on the kitchen floor. Ethan couldn’t even begin to imagine how terrified Teddy must’ve been. He quickly scooped him up into his arms and held him tightly for a minute or two.
“Teddy, I’m a doctor. Like Thomas. Mrs. Fuller needs my help, so I’m going to have to put you down, okay?” Teddy’s arms tightened around Ethan’s neck. “I know you’re scared, but I need you to be brave. I need you to take a breath, stop crying, and be my assistant. Can you do that? Can you act like a doctor, like Uncle Tom?”
“O-okay.”
“Alright, I’m going to put you down now. You don’t need to come near Mrs. Fuller if you’re scared, you can sit on the couch and wait for me, okay?” Teddy nodded as Ethan set him back down on his feet.
Ethan felt a slight tug on his doctor’s coat when he started to walk towards the kitchen and glanced down. Teddy was holding on to it, trailing behind him with his face hidden behind the white material.
“It’s okay, you’re alright.”
Ethan turned off the stove first, then moved to attend to Mrs. Fuller. He checked for breathing and a pulse; both present, but faint. Was it a heart attack that caused her unconsciousness? He was unsure. Either way, they were going to need to get to Open Heart immediately. If it was a heart attack, he was going to need to administer a series of different drugs to dissolve the blood clot and prevent further heart damage.
“Alright, Teddy.” He turned to the child and offered him a reassuring smile. “I’m going to have to carry Mrs. Fuller. So you’ll have to help me open my car door, can you do that for me? You just have to press a button then open the door for me, can you do that?”
“I- I can- I can do that.”
“Good boy.” He handed Teddy his car keys, pointing at the unlock button, then lifted Mrs. Fuller into his arms. “Alright, now put on your shoes and let’s go.”
—————
Mrs. Fuller was conscious by the time Denise and Thomas made their way to Open Heart. She’d had a heart attack, but thankfully Ethan had gotten to her rather quickly and taken her to his practice for treatment. Teddy was doing better too, drinking a juice box and watching cartoons on Ethan’s iPad in his office with Sienna keeping an eye on him while they waited for Thomas to arrive.
“Thank you so much, Dr. Ramsey.”
“You’re welcome, Thomas,” Ethan nodded. “Teddy is with Dr. Trinh in my office just a floor above, if you’d like to go see him now. He was shaken, but he seems to be doing better now. We gave him a peanut butter and strawberry jelly sandwich, some grape juice, and I got him a chocolate bar. I hope that’s alright, it was a reward for being brave.”
“Of course, I- that’s fine, thank you.” He shook Ethan’s hand, his eyes glistening. “I’m going to go see Teddy now. But thank you again, both of you. Dr. Ramsey, Dr. Hogan, I’m indebted. This is- thank you.”
“Don’t worry about it, Thomas,” Denise assured him; Ethan matching her kind smile as he nodded in agreement. “Go, Teddy’s waiting for you.” Thomas nodded, his relief visible in his wide smile. He hurried upstairs, taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
“I kicked a door in today.”
“Captain America, who, right?” Denise forced her way into Ethan’s arms and he chuckled, hugging her back as tightly as she was hugging him. “You did good, Dr. Ramsey. Teddy must’ve felt so safe with you, I know I always do. The place I feel safest in the whole wide world is right here in your arms.” She lifted her head and pressed her lips against his, smiling when she felt his smile as he kissed her back.
“I would hope so, since these arms are where you belong, Rookie.”
“Yeah, they are.” She nestled her head against his shoulder. Her smile still on her lips, she sighed with a deep satisfaction. “Hey, since I’m here and will be for at least another hour, why don’t you give me some work?”
“Give you some work?” He glanced down at her, his lips quirked and a brow raised. “Gladly, Dr. Hogan. Come on.” He took her hand when they pulled away from each other. “Let’s go talk to Erin Mathers. I had her admitted on Monday after all her lab results came back negative, there was no sign of temporal arteritis.” Denise’s brows furrowed at the information. “It’s neither TMJ nor postherpetic neuralgia, so...Here I am, back to square one and completely at a lost, Rookie,” he admitted with a wry chuckle.
“I’m right here with you, we’ll figure it out.”
“I know we will.” He squeezed her hand, smiling. “In the meantime, I’m going to keep her here and do what I can to help her manage her pain.” He led her towards Room 10 at the end of the hall. “She took over-the-counter painkillers for a while, but stopped after she realized nothing was working for her. It’s a neuropathic pain, so anti-inflammatory and opioid analgesics aren’t going to work for her.”
“Ethan!”
“What is it?”
“It’s a neuropathic pain, so what if it’s trigeminal neuralgia?” They both stopped in their tracks, turning to each other, a look of realization washing over their faces. “It’s rare for someone so young, but not impossible. It explains why her initial thought was to go to the dentist, majority of TN sufferers think it’s a toothache. We’ve already crossed off every other condition on the list that causes neuropathic pain, this is the only logical explanation left. If a blood vessel has compressed her trigeminal nerve, her myelin sheath might have eroded. The damaged nerve is erratically firing pain impulses.”
“Then we are going to need to give her an M.R.I, see if it can delineate the blood vessel that might be pressing on the nerve and irritating it.” He suggested and she nodded in agreement. “I’m thinking we’re going to be able to pop the champagne after today. Nice work, Dr. Hogan.” He smiled at her, caressing her cheek as he leaned in to kiss her forehead.
“Thank you, Dr. Ramsey.”
“Christ...” He shook his head in disbelief, his smile widening to a grin. “You never cease to fill me with pride, Rookie. Seriously, how the hell did I get so goddamn lu-” She grabbed him by the tie, pulling him towards her for a proper kiss, cutting him off. “‘Banana pancakes’, without a doubt, Denise. Now, until the end of time.” She smiled and nodded in agreement, kissing him again.
“Now, until the end of time, Ethan.”

“Out of the question.” Ethan scowled, crossing his arms on the desk.
“But! Ethan, we’re the better hospital! He should be treated here!” Ariel planted her hands firmly on the desk, leaning in, her eyes narrowed in determination.
“Yes, of course we're the better hospital. But the man made his choice.” Ethan shook his head. Every time he thought he got used to Ariel coming up with crazy ideas, she always surpassed his expectations.
“It's not that big a deal. We just need to talk to him. You have privileges there and everything!” Ariel kept staring at him, her gaze intense.
“This is absurd. Did someone put you up to this?” Ethan frowned, this idea was crazier than all the rest she had come up with.
How did she know about the senator?
“Well, it was June's idea.” She pulled back slightly with a shrug.
“Hirata will do anything to get her way. She doesn't play by the rules.” He warned, rubbing his knuckle with his thumb.
“Maybe she's right. Nobody else plays by the rules!” She frowned, leaning in again, even more determined than before.
“I won't stoop to Carrick's level, Ariel. Next time, we'll beat him fair and square.” Ethan rolled his chair, turning his side to her, holding up his palm between them.
“But life isn't fair. You said that yourself this morning. And if we keep taking the high road, we'll be out of a hospital.” She slammed her fist on the desk with a loud thud. Ethan flinched, snapping his head back at her. Her eyes widened, retrieving her hands from the desk, rearranging her hair with a sheepish look. "Sorry… I didn't mean it."
Ethan looked at her for a long moment, then sighed. “I suppose you have a point there. I'm assuming you'd like me to join you.”
“C'mon, Ethan! You have privileges there, right?” She looked up at him with a wide grin. Ethan's face softened, he sighed silently at himself. Once again, she managed to drag him to do something crazy…
Why can't I just say no to her...
“Of course. But that doesn't exactly help you go unnoticed... though I do have an extra coat of theirs somewhere around here…” He stood, searching for the said scrub in the closet in the corner of his office.
“That and plain scrubs would fool anyone!” Ariel squealed, following him half jumping.
“Dear lord, it appears we're going through with this, doesn't it?” He frowned, handing her the scrub. "Try it on?"
Ariel put on the scub, her breath caught when she realised she was wearing his scrub. The tip of her ears warmed, she flicked her eyes down to the ground.
"Is there a problem?" He looked at her from head to toes. While his scrub was a bit longer for her due to their height difference, it still fitted. Looking at the Mass Kenmore badge on the scrub, he swallowed.
While we are the better hospital, what if I weren't her superior anymore?
"Nothing… It fits." She looked up at him slyly, straightening the scrub. Her voice snapping him back to his office.
He cleared his throat, shaking off his thought, "Great, let's get going."
Ethan parked his car a block from Mass Kenmore, laying low from any prying eyes. The car ride ended up in silence, he wondered what was on her mind, while what happened minutes ago replayed in his non stop.
When she looked at him with her watery brown eyes, he couldn't say no. When she slammed on the desk, her determination struck him, reminding him why he picked her for the program. Next time… Next time I will stand my ground...
They walk through the front doors of Mass Kenmore, side by side. They were close to each other, letting their hands occasionally brush against each other, sending a spark to both of them.
Near the entrance, he turned to mutter in her ear, shaking his head. “I don't know how I let you talk me into this.”
She giggled, “Well I did, so... look more natural! You know how good you are at being subtle.”
He blushed slightly, remembering what happened in the bar, and the night… He glared at her, but the smirk on his face betrayed him. She grinned with an innocent blink. He flicked his eyes to the guard at the entrance, schooling his face.
“I.D., please.” The guard held out his hand. Ethan presents his Edenbrook badge.
“I'm on the security clearance list. I have research privileges here.”
“So you are. Thank you, Dr. Ramsey.” The guard nodded to him, after checking his list.
Ariel tried to sneak past the guard as his attention was on Ethan, but the guard still saw her.
“Excuse me, Doctor! Ma'am! I need to see your I.D. as well.”
She turned to face the guard, heart thumping, she opened her mouth, but Ethan was faster.
“She's with me, obviously.” He scowled, putting on his commanding voice. He folded his arms above his chest, towering the guard with his height.
“I'm sorry, but every doctor working here needs to be accounted for, and…" The guard gulped under his intense stare, struggling to hold the gaze.
"Surely you can look her up, yes? I can't possibly manage my research without a resident on hand to help record the trial data.” He snorted, tapping his feet.
“I can do that. What's the name?” The guard grabbed his tablet, putting it up to his nose.
“Joan Smith.” Ethan said, unblinkingly.
The security guard gave her a skeptical look, then looked through the list on his tablet. He reluctantly nodded at both of them. Ariel and Ethan walked through reception. She forced herself not to look back at the guard, keeping her head straight and stood tall.
“How did you possibly guess that there's an intern with that name working here?” After getting far enough, she whispered, flicking her eyes up to him.
He grinned wide, snorting, “I'm a diagnostician, Ariel. Observation is my job. Now if you're done staring at me…” Ariel looked away at once, her cheeks warmed.
Ethan leads them up a floor into a sprawling labyrinth of corridors. Ariel looked around, taking in the complicated floor map. She glanced at the schedule on the wall, but nothing caught her eyes.
“Do you know where Mass Kenmore would keep a senator?” Ariel asked, fiddling with her hair.
“Not off the top of my head. We'll need to check their patient records.”
“So you're saying we need to hack into their files.” Ariel beamed, he was certain that if there weren't others around, she would jump and run off to a computer.
“You're having too much fun with this.” He shook his head with a glint of amusement in his eyes, smirking.
“Or maybe you're not having enou--” She giggled, nudging his side.
“Oh no.” Her eyes widened at the figure in front of them. Her eyes widened at a familiar face heading towards them, his gaze locked on the chart in his hands.
That's Landry! Ariel gulped, while she wasn't exactly surprised seeing him there, she couldn't get spotted.
Landry lowersed the chart, looking up, when she shoved Ethan in the back, straight into Landry!
“Wha--” His eyes widened at her sudden movement, stumbling to halt from bumping into Laundry.
“Dr. Ramsey! I'm... Oh, god. I'm sorry. Was that my fault? I bet that was my fault.” Laundry stuttered, his eyes widened in shock as he saw Ethan standing in front of him.
Ariel lowered her head and hurried past Landry while his attention was on Ethan. At a safe distance, she turned, she smirked at Ethan, folding her arms.
“You should watch where you're going, Olsen.” Ethan scowled, towering Laundry.
“But... Why are you here?” He stared at the ground sheepishly under his intense glare.
“Are attendings at Mass Kenmore in the habit of running their schedules past second year residents?” Ethan rolled his eyes, daring Landry to ask another question.
“Of course not. Sorry.” Landry was frozen in his place when Ethan brushed past him, muttering something under his breath. Since Ethan knew what Landry did to sabotage Ariel, he couldn’t forgive him, even after he showed up when Ariel solved Naveen’s case, claiming that Landry helped. Good that Landry was in Mass Kenmore, all the annoying people should stay close to one another.
Ethan joined Ariel, continuing their path down the corridors, “You're practically a super spy.” She smirked, he rolled his eyes.
“I may have a talent for this, I'll admit. I can’t help to be that good.” He chuckled with a shrug.
At a turn, Ariel halted, Ethan almost bumped into her, he opened his mouth to protest, but she grabbed him by his elbow, pulling him into a nearby supply closet, slamming the door behind her. Their shoulders touching in the small space. He frowned, “What is happening with you?”
“I saw Carrick walking by,” she whispered.
He rolled his eyes, that was fair, while that could be inevitable, at least they delayed it.
“I haven't hidden in a supply closet in almost a decade, rookie.” He chuckled, looking around in the dark room.
“Are… Are you sure?” Her face fell, staring at the ground. Seeing that Ethan gulped, his eyes widened, did he say something wrong? He searched his brain. He remembered hiding after Naveen chewed him out when he misdiagnosed a patient, but it was a long time ago, he already swore not to let it happen again, and he kept it, was there anything he left out?
He flicked his eyes down to her, she was still looking at him, pain flashed through her eyes, her lips pursed. Was it something to do with her?
He blinked, his breath caught, deep in thought. Then his eyes lit up, he knew what he missed, they hid together for Naveen’s test last year, shortly after Miami… Miami… The past rushed through him, drawing the breath out of his lungs. Ariel must have caught his demeanor changed, her sad face softened by a small smile.
His eyes flicked to her lips, he found himself closing the distance with her, his hand raised despite his wish, wanting to caress her cheek.
Ariel bit her lip, also moving closer to him, she was staring at his lips, he saw the desire and longing in her. His heart raced.
But we are in Mass Kenmore...
“I think... I think the coast might be clear.” He awkwardly took a step back, clearing his throat, tearing his eyes from her.
Ariel pulled away, he could almost hear her sigh, she slipped past him, opening the door a crack, with a slightly defeated voice, she said, “We're good to go...”
Ethan turned to her as they continued down the corridor, his eyes softening, he gently tucked on her elbow, “I meant to talk to you... I saw the results of Kyra's scan. How are you holding up? It… must be hard for you. Everything crashing down...”
She swallowed audibly, shaking her head, keeping her head high, “I can't think about that right now. I need to focus on finding Senator Farrugia.”
Ethan nodded slowly, understanding. He walked along her side, after another turn, he gently said, “Alright, Ariel. Whatever you need.” Her eyes flicked to him momentarily with a small smile, nodding. She quickly stole a squeeze of his hand.
They walked on until reaching an empty administrative office. She took a peek inside from the window, casually slipped inside and checked the computer. It's unlocked. “Gotcha!” She threw her arms in the air.
Ethan nodded to her with a mischievous grin, “Let me. I'm familiar with their system.”
She retreated to the door, he leaned casually against it, acting as a lookout as Ethan slid into the seat and tapped at the keyboard, his eyes narrowed as he focused.
“So how often do you come here?” She asked while looking out of the window at the corridor.
“Very occasionally. I'm consulting on a research project with an immunologist which requires me to come by a few times a year, but I largely try to avoid the place.” He shrugged, keeping his eyes on the screen.
“Because of Tobias?”
For seconds, there was only the sound of keyboard tapping and the sound of them breathing.
“You guys seem to have nothing in common.”
“Nothing much now. I was never what I'd call an idiot, but I was young once. And he was a little different then, too. I was studious but frustrated. He was confident, fun. Always in trouble. We clicked straight away.”
“So you were the Bert and Ernie of med school?”
“Not quite. As far as I recall, Bert never tried to impress Ernie by commandeering a cadaver.”
“You what?”
“I wasn't entirely successful.”
Ethan sat back, his smile fading. “There's no Farrugia anywhere in the hospital. Are we sure June's tip was reliable?”
“I think so... Could he be under a pseudonym? Would a hospital allow that?”
“It's possible. But that means we need to figure out what a senator neither of us has ever met would use as an alias.” Ethan rubbed his temple, groaning.
“What do we know about Tobias? He would have been the one to admit the senator, and it seems unlikely he'd pick a name at complete random.”
Ethan's eyes lit up as Ariel finished her sentence, “Dwight Theodore Lewis III.”
“Who?"
"It was the name on Tobias's fake I.D. He kept it framed on his desk as a memorial to all the good times' they'd shared. He used it any time he needed to avoid getting in trouble.” He rolled his eyes at the memory, someone was too good at getting into trouble.
Ethan worked through multiple screens, searching the patient records. A minute later, he looked up and grinned.
“Room 734. That's in the V.I.P. wing.”
“Kenmore has a literal V.I.P. wing?” Her eyes widened, mouth agape.
“There's more than one reason I despise this place.” He swirled in his chair, getting up to go.
“...Hold that thought, I need to grab my water bottle from the desk.” An unknown voice came from the corridor, Ariel retreated from the door, moving closer to Ethan.
They stared at each other in alarm. The employee was too close to make a run for it and there's nowhere to hide.
I need to make sure whoever leaves at once...
Without warning, Ethan grabbed her by the front of her scrubs and pulled her close. His lips clashed over hers, he kissed her with an intensity that makes her heart skip. Her eyes widened briefly, melting into the kiss, his touch.
His hand reaching behind her head, pulling her close, deepening the kiss while his other hand ran up and down her back.
“Oh! Uh... Sorry!” The intruder halted at the door, turning away.
Ariel sighed against Ethan, barely registering the sound of retreating footsteps until he reluctantly broke the kiss. He kept his hands pressed flat against her back, holding her close. She rested her head on his chest for another moment, savoring the warm and comfort.
“We should... We need to…” He shook his head, taking a step away from her. What were we talking about before?
“Room 734. Yeah.” She smirked, rubbing her hand along the length of his arm. His cheeks warmed, flicking his eyes away from her.
As they got out of the office, they carefully looked around, making sure the coast was clear. "Hey, professional spy. Of all ways to stop that employee, you found the most interesting one." She grinned.
"It worked well, didn't it?" He smirked at her with a shrug.
"I'm not complaining either." She chuckled, he shook his head in amusement. He had no idea why he did that, it simply felt right. He didn't regret it at all, he would gladly do it again if needed.
"Of course it had to work, you are Ethan Freaking Ramsey after all!" She laughed when there's no one in sight. He rolled his eyes with a grin. They hurried toward the elevator when...
“Ethan?”
They freezed at the familiar voice behind. Ethan's voice dropped to a whisper.
“Keep going. Don't let him see your face. I'll keep him busy.”
“But--” She resisted from turning and looking at Ethan.
“No but, Go.”
He stopped to wait for Tobias, Ariel slipped a surgical mask on, hurrying to the elevator. She kept her eyes straight ahead, hoping no one would find out, her heart racing.
Ethan turned to face Tobias, seeing Ariel disappeared into the elevator safely from the corner of his eyes, he sighed silently.
“Come to see what a real hospital looks like?” Tobias walked closer with a cocky smile on his face.
“Is it really a hospital if there are no qualified doctors working there?” He snorted, wanting to turn away.
“Jealousy doesn't look good on you, Ethan... Oh, who am I kidding, it definitely does.” He winked at Ethan.
Ethan glared at him, his jaw tight. He battled himself not to dash off. Tobias was the one treating the senator, Ariel would need the time.
“By the way, Ethan, I’m having a good time treating my coma patient, any interesting cases with you?” Tobias let out a hearty laugh while straightening his scrub.
Ethan cursed Tobias under his breath, he spoke with a stern voice, “Good to know she’s still alive in your hands.”
Ethan flicked his eyes over Tobias's shoulder, he saw a familiar figure walking by, halting behind Tobias, turning to another side. Is that Zaid?
As if on cue, Zaid looked his way, giving him a playful wink before disappearing at the turn. Ethan gulped, Zaid and a wink doesn't coexist, right?
“Ha, are you looking down on me?” Tobias smirked, keeping his head high, staring at Ethan with narrowed eyes. Ethan teared his eyes back at the problem at hand.
“Given my height, I have no choice. Must I remind you. I didn’t care to look at you. You stopped me on my path, not the reverse.” He glared at him, his feet started to move automatically, he couldn't stand another second looking at Tobias's smug face.
“Feeling good about yourself, huh?” Tobias shouted at Ethan as he brushed past him.
“Can’t be better…” Ethan muttered under his breath, making sure Tobias was the only one who could hear him.
Ethan folded up his arms, making his way to the exit, not looking back. Hopefully Ariel would be fine and do her job well. His rookie was a great one, she would have the senator convinced by now.
Getting out of Mass Kenmore, he picked up his pace, hurrying to his car. Success or not, he would pick up Ariel, making sure she was safe. He jumped into his car, starting the engine.
He drove by just in time when Ariel and Zaid were running out of Mass Kenmore. Wait… The two are laughing, that couldn't be Zaid… Did Baz dressed like Zaid?
Anyways, he pulled by the roadside as the two ran closer, he poked his head out from the window, with a grin. “Need a ride?”
“This is just like a movie!” Baz squealed, he leaped into the car with Ariel as Tobias and the guard busted out of the entrance.
“Hit it!” Ariel nudged Ethan's side while fastening her seat belt.
Ethan slammed his foot on the accelerator, leaving Tobias in the dust.
"Good work, spy master!" She chuckled, flicking her eyes to Ethan, a ghost of a smirk on his face.

Open Heart: Second Year, Chap 9 Commentary
Author’s note: This is my feelings and thought after reading the chapter, so major spoilers ahead
Finally OH is back!! I’m so excited, today’s chapter is great and drama filled!
By the way, if you are up to read something else, I got you covered! I am writing another story and need beta readers there, see if you are interested? LINK
Kyra
My heart sinks when Kyra wanted to give up on her treatment like in book 1 and when she decided to get back to work. I don’t want anyone to die. But seeing there is a funeral scene in Chap 1, I guess someone has to… Then I would rather be Kyra, at least I see it coming, if it is someone else, my heart won’t take it well…
Bryce
His idea for the operation is very brave, although I can’t help the thought that it may fail and lead to Kyra’s death, which ends in the funeral scene in Chap 1… I do hope the operation goes well and Kyra gets to live longer…
Esme
Our intern is great! Probably the only normal one within the friend group. I like how she is observant about MC and asked whether s/he is fine and offered to help. Echoes how MC was observant about Ethan in book 1. I hope we get more time with her, although her story line seems to be more simple than other things that are currently in the foreground.
Sothy
I don’t even remember this guy’s name, haha… I wonder how he gets into the program, like one of the options MC can ask about. I guess Edenbrook has to figure out a way to get rid of those book-smart but can’t do practical work… Hopefully Elijah will give him the talk he needed so Sothy can perform at the level he needs to be at as a doctor.
Elijah
Happy to see we finally get time to talk to him, although the talk is already long overdue. I like the part when MC recalled what Ethan said, about how one’s professional development is too important to put something else above it, whether you romance Ethan or not, he still have great influence on s/he and is pushing him/ her to be the better doctor. MC proves that she could still help Elijah, giving him the lecture he needed, while being his friend. When will Ethan understand he is already doing that, things he does with MC is more than friends already…
June
This is getting more disturbing than before. Although it is not explicit in the story about the coma patient, I am quite confident it was June now, seeing how she is working with Tobias. Maybe her sleeping with Tobias does mean nothing to her in terms of their relationship, seeing how she is good at manipulating people, but I still think there’s something behind it, she seems to be trying to drag Ethan into trouble, although MC successfully escaped. I think we will get to know the next chap, with the chap summary already out.
The scene in the supply closet, I want to punch June more than the wall or the door. After book 1, I started loving to see pixel characters punching people… I blame PB for this. June is very inconsiderate there, even MC is a doctor, things can still be hard, people have emotions… but June doesn't, so I guess that’s just how she is… I saw the option if you let her slap MC, she actually does that! I was expecting her to do it playfully, but I guess it isn’t the case…
Baz
As always, he is so funny! I can't imagine what Zaid's reaction was when he knew Baz pretended to be him and told Naveen to hire Baz.
The scene where he and MC bumped together when escaping the guard is hilarious.
Rafael
This is an interesting turn of event. It seems there are a lot of plot points about him that are currently off screen. But I am still standing by my prediction earlier, Rafael is still a LI, but PB wants a twist there. With how the ending of the chapter is, we should be getting a scene with him next chapter. Given how Rafael doesn't work in the hospital anymore, it is acceptable we don't see him around a lot, although I look forward to more scene the gang get together.
Aurora
I kind of feel bad for her. Maybe MC was a bit harsh on her in the scene, I hope they have a chance to talk it out. Maybe I should do a rewrite for that, let yu know by then. She shows how much she really tried to be friends with MC. Tobias is the jerk that dragged her into the trouble that was caused by him all along, no surprise though.
Ethan
We leave the most important one to last, yay! You all know I'm biased, right?
Once again he was convinced to join MC on their adventure, first the softball game, now pouching a patient from MK, of course he is favoring them a lot.
He is the supportive one mc gets that gives the support they need and knows something is wrong. The scene he comforted mc in the MRI room is so cute, if only the situation is better…
The supply closet scene in MT is hilarious, somehow he forgets hiding in one with mc in book1 when they tried to sneak into the lab? Let's fix that in a rewrite!
While I don't see PB doing a reconciliation plot for him with Tobias, Ethan remembers quite a lot of details about their past friendship. This is kind of sad how the friendship went down as the competition went heated. At least PB didn't forget this part from book 1.
In the admin office, that’s epic. Of the many ways to dance out from being discovered by the MK nurse, Ethan decided that making out and kissing will be the best choice. I laughed so hard, but that is also great. Taking the tally, from holding hands in the car, kissing in from of his apartment, hugging mc to comfort them and this, it is quite a streak of Ethan taking the first move. I hope they will get to talk about their relationship soon, I need to see that!
And pulling up to pick up mc and Baz? That’s a spy master we get there!
Prediction for next chapter (which are most likely wrong XD)
Given the chap description, I think Tobias may show up, and the we will get to see what June is secretly planning. Or maybe the attention we are getting have something to do with the senator.
We may also get a diamond scene with Rafael, seeing how he is the only LI left without one for himself.
We may also get a scene with Sienna, who doesn’t show up in this chapter, I hope she can get control over Mitch soon.
Most likely Kyra wont show up next chapter though, just so PB can build some more tension. Or if the operation failed, Kyra will show up at the end of chapter like in chap 8. I am guessing Kyra will still go down maybe in chap 11 or 12 and we can get a diamond scene of one of the LI comforting us, but that will be after we sought out with Rafael.
PB seems to have a tendency to have a diamond scene where Ethan will at least show up, I don’t think there will be one with his mother next week, so maybe combine that with Sienna’s, like Ethan catch Sienna helping Mitch too much and MC jumped in to bail Sienna out? Ethan has no problem being mean at the same time mc is good at getting her way from him XD
By the way, if you are up to read something else, I got you covered! I am writing another story and need beta readers there, see if you are interested? LINK

Looking for Beta Readers!
During my down time, (waiting for OH to come back) I finished a first draft for my novel. I am looking for beta readers for it, I really want some feedback. Hope you will be interested to join me on the journey?
The process will start in mid-June. After I cleaned up the first draft.
Manuscript summary: Lia was a member of a team of magicians, they worked to fight against monsters and mysterious cases, while laying low from all humans. On one case of monster attack, Lia found herself facing a new mystery, through battles and unexpected events, she reevaluated her role on the team. While magic was already a secret, she bumped into a bigger secret and found out something special about herself.
You can get a taste of it HERE (the first draft of Chapter 1)
If you are interested, feel free to check out HERE (google form link), got more details about the process there.
Finally I can get back to scene rewrites and commentary for OH next week!

The Collision Chap. 2
Author’s note: For my followers here for fan fics, recently I tried to work on own story, which I hope you will also give a try and enjoy? I am still coming up with ideas for my OH fanfics, maybe I will rewrite older chapters? Let me know what you want to read! My chat and ask are always open!
Genre: Fantasy
Summary: Lots of monsters appeared in the city, what will Lia do with her magic? How will her life change with all these events?
Catch up: Chap. 1
Lia was one left turn from the burger place, yet she hesitated. Pretending to check her phone, she leaned at the wall by the roadside. She closed her eyes, trying to figure out whether it was a good idea showing up. Looking at the card between her fingers, her curiosity won over. She pushed the door and went in.
The burger place was, as typical as one could have imagined, a cozy little shop with people coming and going, enjoying some fast food, Lia looked around, she realized, not only did the stranger never leave any contact information, she didn’t even see his face yesterday.
‘Great, this must be how things work…’
Puzzled, Lia wandered into the crowd near the ordering booth, looking around, not even sure what she should expect. The moment she wanted to give up, she heard a voice in her head, or so she believed. It felt like someone whispering to her, but instead of words, it was a feeling. Nonetheless, it was a strong urge, so strong that she couldn’t stop herself walking towards a corner of the shop. He was a bit larger than she expected, approaching him, Lia felt the air around her denser and denser, although both of them seemed to be doing nothing. A few steps from the stranger, he looked up, face unreadable, staring into Lia’s eyes. Lia flinched, she swallowed hard, ‘Maybe I should have bailed out earlier…’, she tried to focus on how this man in front of her barged into her house, and how furious she was. She took a big breath, taking the last few steps.
‘Hello there, take a seat.’ The man gestured at the chair in front of Lia, opposite to him.
With a frown on her face, Lia hammered her hands on the table, leaning in, she struggled to keep her voice from shaking, ‘Now it must be fun sneaking into my house!?’
His demeanor changed slightly, the air around Lia relaxed, a slight splint of interest flashed in his eyes, teasingly, ‘Not sure about fun, it’s not challenging at all.’
‘What-’
‘How about you take a seat so we can talk? I know you got questions, so do I.’ The man gestured towards the chair. Lia wanted to speak up, but under his commanding tone and intense gaze, she gave in.
‘Adrian.’
‘Lia.’
They locked eyes with each other for seconds in silence. Lia tried hard not to let her eyes flick elsewhere, Adrian’s eyes seemed to be dissecting her from the core. Adrian raised his brows, and Lia broke the silence.
‘So… You also know magic?’
‘Yes.’
‘Why I never saw you around nor did I hear about you?’
‘Another Element in their little bubble.’ He smirked, making Lia uneasy.
‘What Element are you talking about? Me?’
‘So you are a real rookie. And that’s why you almost got killed by the monster.’ Adrian chuckled, looking at Lia for a reaction.
Humiliated by what happened yesterday, Lia quickly rebuked, ‘I am not a rookie! And… and I did have a plan!’
‘Oh, sorry for interrupting your plan of joining the dead. How reckless was I to jump in.’ In his sarcastic tone, Adrian tried to stifle his laughter, but a smile escaped.
‘Now I have been beating villains and those things for years!’
‘Yeah, you Element never failed to entertain.’ Adrian shook his head slightly, barely containing his smile.
‘Wait! Did you create those monsters!?’ Shocked, Lia sprung up, leaning over the table, she stared into Adrian, brows furrowed.
Taken aback by Lia, Adrian quickly retorted. ‘Heck no! While I am bored, making monsters isn't interesting either.’ He flashed out his palm, frowning, ‘And if you want to keep this between us, tone it down.’
Lia looked around, catching a few pairs of eyes on her, and a few more getting themselves busy. Lia pulled back the chair she knocked back and sat down.
Lia trained her eyes on Adrian, ‘And you haven’t answered my question. If you are calling me one of the Elements and laughing at me, what are you?’
Adrian took a sip of his drink, expression serious, ‘You will be dead if I told you.’
‘You made me even more curious’
‘In the time being, consider my magic similar to yours.’ Lia caught an uneasy look on his face, Adrian seemed to resent the very words he said.
A sudden beep from Lia’s phone interrupted, ‘Sorry, a minute.’ When Lia checked her phone, Adrian eyed her curiously, ‘Hm, seems like troubles are coming for you.’
Lia locked her phone, deeply frowning, ‘You are right, more monsters appeared. I got to go.’ She stood up, grabbing her things, and was about to leave when she caught Adrian’s words, ‘For your safety, keep our meeting secret.’
Looking back from the corner of her eye, ‘I’ll consider that.’, then she left.

Open Heart: Second Year, Chapter 8, Ethan Diamond Scene Rewrite
Author’s note: I love the new banters and dialogues I added, hope you will also enjoy them! And this chapter is really good! I also wrote a chapter commentary if you are interested in it (LINK)
Summary: This is a rewrite of Open Heart: Second Year, Chapter 8, Ethan diamond scene
Caution: In this version, I stick closer to Ethan’s back story from book 1, ie, his relationship with his parent is worse than PB made it to be in book 2.
In the cheers of friends and peers, Ethan smiled at Ariel, her home-run secured their win. He was happy for the win. Sure he would love to beat Tobias in every way possible, and straightly after he stole a patient? Even better. But there was still something he wasn’t ready to face, leaving him half-hearted the whole day. He decided to head home early since he already spent a precious day in a softball match. He shook his head to himself, when Ariel came earlier, he couldn’t say no to her. This girl really made it hard to focus on work, his mind drifted to the few journals he was planning to finish by the end of the day. He walked to the lockers to gather his stuff when he saw Ariel also there. Finally the mvp of the day was alone, it was only appropriate to congratulate her, right?
‘So? Was that worth dragging me down here?’ He raised an eyebrow, asking her.
‘I regret nothing! I came to mess up Mass Kenmore, and I definitely achieved that! Did you see how defeated Tobias looked. I’m calling it a win!.’ Her grin reached her eyes.
He loved to see her smile, she always brightened the day, but with what’s on his mind, he could barely give a wry smile. At once he found her searching his eyes. Her smile faltered a bit, her eyes soft with concern. She could always catch the tiniest details when it came to him, it was no different this time. He swallowed, hoping she wouldn't ask too much. He wasn’t sure where he was ready to think through what happened the last few days, let alone talking about it.
‘I got the feeling your head wasn’t really in it tonight.’ She gently asked.
‘It’s softball. My head was never going to be in it. And I didn’t even need that to win over Tobias.’ He smirked, hoping Ariel would take his answer.
Her brows creased, her hand lightly brushed against his. The small spark in the touch sent a shiver down his spine, his eyes widened slightly.
‘I know it’s more than that. Talk to me, Ethan.’
He sighed, of course Ariel wasn’t letting him off the hook that easily. She was always the stubborn one, never gave up and would go as far as humanly possible for people she cared about. His eyes met hers, seeing the yearning in her eyes. His gaze softened, maybe he would need someone to talk to, and Ariel would be the one he could trust. Seeing she went the length to stalk that woman with him, he should let Ariel know.
‘Not here.’ He whispered, making sure only she could hear him. The last thing he needed was getting their interaction any more attention than needed to be.
‘Then where?’ She asked, with the same whispering volume. Ethan blinked, he hadn’t thought about it yet, he simply knew the softball field wasn’t the right place for his personal issues. The gears in his head turned quickly.
‘I suppose you could come home with me. I have a new recipe I’ve been looking for an excuse to try.’ He shrugged, trying to play it off as something usual.
‘You cook?’ Ariel’s mouth wide-open staring at him. It made him laugh.
‘I do. Often. I find it very meditative, actually. It always helps me get my thoughts in order.’
‘Sure, let’s go! I can’t wait to get out of this cheap uniform.’ She winked. He saw what her was going for and smiled in return.
They got into his car and started the engine. Intending to keep the main conversation for later, Ariel decided to break the silence with some small talk.
‘Thank you for joining the team last minute. I know you would rather stay in your office.’ She smiled at him.
‘I have no problem putting MassKenmore in its place.’ He smirked.
‘Really? After being an attending for years in Edenbrook, this is finally the year for you to do that?’ She teased him, and he rolled his eyes. He couldn’t refuse her, but he could keep the real reason he joined from her.
‘Do you play softball often?’ He asked. He spent most of his time at work, putting patients as priority, barely sparing enough time for gym sessions to stay healthy, so that he could keep at his A-game.
‘Not really. But I enjoy watching softball games. You know? I have something called live and I know how to relax, not like some doctor!’ Ethan shot her a look and a wry smile, she ignored him and continued, ‘I guess some observational learning helped. And practicing the night before the match helped.’ She smiled.
‘With… your friends?’ He asked. He would love to spend more time with her, but that’s probably not the best choice for both of them.
‘Yes, the other two of ‘the boys’, Dr greene and Aveiro.’ She laughed again at ‘the boys’, appreciating Bryce’s humor.
‘I saw you with Dr. Aurora Emery earlier, what were you talking about?’ He remembered Terrance, the Mass Kenmore doctor that made him step in their argument, he frowned. He also remembered the mention of Throne, he almost forgot about him. If that Terrance dared to touch Ariel, of course he was going to punch him in the face, it’s not like he never punched someone before.
‘I… It was nothing, just some minor things.’ She averted his gaze, and he wasn’t letting this go, he stayed silent, until Ariel spoke again.
‘Tobias Carrick said Aurora told him about Stephanie. I am just trying to make things clear with her. But somehow…’ She trailed off. He sighed, it wasn’t a surprise, given how Tobias tried hard to beat him. But he couldn’t help the fact he got the higher GPA and being that good in his job, Tobias could get jealous all he wanted.
‘Aurora told me she was proposing for their hospital to also solicit research funding and didn’t expect Carrick to directly steal a patient from us. I think she is above all the stealing thing. But I shouldn’t have told her about Stephenie at all.’ Ariel sighed, her shoulder slumped.
‘We’ll beat them next time. Don’t blame it on yourself, it’s not your fault. I’m sure we will win whatever comes up next. Even if we don't, some resident is going to come up with a surprising plan for it.’ He smirked.
‘Yeah, and some attending is going to be mad over it.’ She chuckled, looking much happier now.
Soon, they arrived at Ethan's house, they freshened up. He pulled the curtains to the glittering bay, not wasting the view that cost him a fortune.
‘So what’s this recipe you’ve been dying to try?’ She asked.
‘Georgian Stuffed Chicken.’
‘On a random weeknight?’ She looked surprised.
‘Correct. Come over here.’ He shrugged, who cared what day it was, as long as he got the food he wanted.
He went into the kitchen, taking out the chicken and pushed it to Ariel.
‘What am I supposed to do with this?’ Her jaw dropped. He sets a bowl of butter beside the chicken, ‘Can’t believe you are also a rookie in cooking. Get massaging.’ He smiled, teasing her.
She awkwardly scooped up some butter and rubbed it on the chicken.
‘C’mon, not only do I have to push you to be a better doctor, I also need to push you to be a better chef?’ It was now Ariel’s turn to roll her eyes. He continued, ‘You’ll have to do better than that. Rub it right in. Full coverage.’
‘Ethan, how long have you been a secret chef?’ She asked, still mending the chicken.
‘For as long as I remembered.’
‘As in… you had an Easy-Bake Oven?’
‘As in, my dad liked to cook, and he let me help him with all the easy parts as soon as I was old enough.’ Thinking about his dad dampened his mood, but Ariel was too busy with the chicken to notice.
‘That’s… painfully adorable. Did little Ethan have a special apron? Or a little chef’s hat?’ She asked with a soft smile, so soft that it melted Ethan’s glare, ‘No.’ he looked away from her, went on preparing the food, and continued, ‘My dad worked a lot. He took on extra shifts. The kind of thing single parents have to do to keep the lights on. One way I could help was making dinner sometimes when he was exhausted.’ His face solunm.
‘That’s pretty sweet. I guess you got good at it.’ Ariel smiled. Ethan eyed her with amusement in his eyes, she could always see the silver lining.
‘I make it my business to get good at everything.’ He smirked.
‘Really? How about let’s make pancakes next time? Of course you are also great at them?’ Ariel looked at him, with a mischievous glint in her eyes, Ethan shot her a glare. He was certain his dad told her that, the single thing he wasn’t good at, and Ariel knew about it. He cleared his throat, ‘Is the chicken ready?’
Ariel quickly finished up with the butter as he fiddled with the rice, ‘Something is missing.’ He commented, after smelling it.
‘Did you check the recipe?’ Ariel asked.
‘Recipes always tend to the safe side, flavor-wise. What would you add?’ He wasn’t sure about Ariel’s preference, and opted to let her make the choice. She quickly picked peppers.
‘I should have known you’d want to add more heat’ He smiled, chopping the peppers.
‘It’s not the only kind of heat I’d like to add…’ She seemed to be standing closer to Ethan now, speaking with a deep voice, while blinking innocently to him. He snapped his head to her, looking her in the eyes, an intense longing built in him, they held the gaze for a while, until he sucked in a deep breath and turned back to the cutting board.
‘You make it hard to stick to my intentions, Ariel.’ He tried hard to pull his mind back to cooking.
‘Good, I already made it my business. Also you are the one that started it.’ She smirked.
Soon they were almost done with the cooking procedures and got a moment of rest, leaning on the stool. ‘So… are we going to talk about whatever’s got you so…’ Ariel asked with a gentle and caring voice.
He sighed, slightly hesitant, ‘I suppose I did promise you an explanation… The thing is… I’ve been avoiding my father.’
‘But why? It sounded like you and him have a good relationship now.’ She frowned.
‘I can’t stop thinking about what you and I talked about in the car the day we followed that mother. I always thought that Dad and I are doing well reconnecting, for two people with not much in common and after a long while not on talking terms. But I’ve come to realize that I never tried to get closer to him. I couldn’t truly understand him, the same thing that stopped me from talking to him long ago.’ He said, his face unreadable.
‘Because he still loves your mom.’ He nodded soberly to Ariel.
‘That kind of unconditional love… I could never comprehend it.’ He sighed, staring at the floor.
‘He loves you unconditionally too.’
He shook his head slowly, ‘Everything in this world is conditional, Ariel. Everything. My dad, he never pushes anyone. He never challenges anyone. He never demands anything of anybody. What that woman did to us, it’s like it didn’t matter.’ He took a small pause, gritting his teeth, ‘And I needed it to matter. I need what I do to matter.’
‘I take it that’s not how your relationship with Dr. Banerji was.’ She asked.
‘The opposite. Naveen challenged me every single day. Still does. If I ever came up short of what I was capable of, he let me know.’ He remembered when he misdiagnosed a patient before he was an attending, that in itself was embarrassing enough, but getting chewed out by Naveen afterwards was even more embarrassing. He swore not to let that happen again, he would never let Naveen down again.
‘And you haven’t talked to your dad about any of this.’ Ariel’s brows furrowed.
‘I have no idea how I’d start that conversation.’
‘So you are avoiding him all together?’
He turned to add ingredients to the pot, sighing heavily, ‘Yes.’
‘You can’t avoid things when it gets hard, Ethan…’ Before Ariel could finish, there’s a knock at the door, Ethan freezed.
‘Just how long have you been ignoring him? Long enough for him to show up unannounced to make sure you are still alive?’
‘... I’ll have to answer that.’ His face fell and he turned to the door.
He opened the door, seeing his dad outside, with a big smile on his face. ‘Hi dad.’
‘Thank goodness you’re here. I was starting to worry about you.’ He patted Ethan’s shoulder,
‘I’m sorry dad, I’ve been…’ but his dad cut him off, ‘Busy, as usual. Don’t worry, I understand.’
They stepped into the apartment, and his dad saw Ariel, ‘Oh. But I see you have company… Hello again, Dr. Wright.’ He looked surprised.
‘Don’t mind me, Mr Ramsey, we’re making more food than two people should ever eat.’ She said, with a sweet smile.
‘If I know my son at all, he was planning to eat the leftovers for his next few lunches.’ He chuckled.
Ariel’s eyes widened, ‘Is that why I hardly ever see you in the cafeteria?’
His dad laughed, looking at Ethan, ‘What did you used to call it? The tenth circle of hell?’
‘Something like that. Stay for dinner, Dad. There’ll be plenty.’ He shrugged, gesturing his dad to take a seat on the couch.
‘As long as I’m not imposing.’ He giggled, looking between the two.
‘You are not.’ Ariel smiled.
Ethan prepared the final steps of the chicken, when his dad cleared his throat and asked, ‘So what exactly have you been busy with these past couple weeks?’
‘Work. Same as usual.’ He blurted out.
‘... I see.’ He nodded thoughtfully, ‘It’s just that, until recently, you always had time to answer my calls.’ He looked upset.
An uncomfortable silence fell as Ethan failed to answer, he looked around nervously, he met Ariel’s eyes, she gave him a meaningful look. He shook his head, he wasn’t ready for the talk and he had no idea what to say. Ariel frowned at him and mouthed, ‘talk to him.’
‘Am I missing something?’ His dad asked, confused. Ariel shot Ethan a pointed look, he sighed, taking in a deep breath and said, ‘Dad… I have to talk to you about something.’ He turned to Ariel, asking her to handle the chicken, who quickly agreed and disappeared into the kitchen.
‘’What’s that about, son?’ He laid his hand on Ethan’s shoulder gently, leaning closer. Ethan slowly repeated what he told Ariel earlier.
‘I always knew you were still angry with her, but I thought after we started talking again, you weren’t angry at me anymore.’
‘I just don’t understand how you can still love her after everything she did to us. And… I think it’s putting a distance between us again, it feels like every time I tried to reconnect with you, it pulled us away.’ Ethan sighed.
‘Love is complicated, Ethan. I thought you’d know that by now…’ He slowly said.
Ethan looked up, wanting to say something, but instead saw Ariel going towards the front door. ‘Ariel? Where are you going?’
‘Home. I think you two need some privacy.’ She smiled.
‘But the chicken…’ Ethan frowned, he felt bad having her help with cooking, but not having a taste of it. He was hoping she would like the recipe. He was hoping to spend a bit more time with her, now that he got a somewhat legit reason and a quite professional one.
‘Just bring me some tomorrow. I’ll be looking forward to it! So I don’t have to go to the cafeteria.’ Her smile was so sweet that it melted him. He looked back at his dad, then looked at Ariel, he nodded gratefully.
‘Wait here, Dad. Ariel, I’ll walk you out.’
Slowly they walked out of his apartment, ‘Thank you for giving me the push.’ He said.
‘I guess sometimes I can be the one pushing you to be the best person you can be.’ She smirked, teasing him, he smiled. He knew she was right, she always brought out the side of him that’s very different from who he thought he was, even though it was sometimes scary for him.
‘I guess I really needed that.’ He whispered, not sure whether he wanted her to hear this.
‘Can you go home alright?’ He asked, arriving at the entrance of the apartment building.
‘Sure, I’ll call a car.’ She pulled out her phone, before she started up the app, Ethan laid a hand on her shoulder, turning her towards him. He pulled her close, cupping her cheek with one hand tenderly. His voice was low and filled with longing. ‘Thank you. I couldn’t do that on my own.’
‘Ethan…’ She leaned closer. In a moment, his lips met hers, his arm slipping around her, pulling her closer to him. She kissed him back fiercely, desperately… The kiss set a fire in him, he had been wanting this for so long, yet he held back all the time, trying hard to convince himself otherwise. He was going out of breath from the intensity of the kiss, but he had no problem suffocating himself over this. Finally, Ariel pulled away, she looked into his eyes.
‘Ethan… what does this mean?’ She asked, her eyes vulnerable.
‘I don’t know.’ He struggled to maintain eye contact with her. He didn’t think that far. All he knew was he needed her, she was the one he could trust, the one he could rely on and the one who would support him. He kissed her again, softly, tenderly, savoring the touch of her soft lips, the passion and the spark. Finally he pulled away, ‘We’ll talk about it later.’ He nodded with determination. She nodded, staying in his arms for another long, luscious moment and finally went on her way calling a car. He slowly walked back to the entrance.
Soon her car arrived, he was standing just inside the entrance, making sure he saw her get into the car and leave. He made his way back to his apartment, taking a deep breath before he went in, he got this and he would see it to the end, now that Ariel already helped him with the beginning.
That night, he told his dad all he felt about him, the arguments they had before slowly faded into the background. The burden on Ethan’s lifted, finally he could breath in front of his Dad. While they were still reluctant in talking about the woman, at least they were making progress within themselves.
After the dinner and some tidying up, Ethan drove his dad back to where he was staying. Afterwards, he headed back to the kitchen, preparing his lunch for tomorrow, and another portion for Ariel.
When he thought of Ariel, he couldn’t stifle his smile. He looked around the kitchen, imagining what it could be, or would be, cooking with her, spending more time with her.

Open Heart: Second Year, Chap 8 Commentary
When things finally get interesting, the book goes into hiatus…
Guess I’ll have to live on fanfic and tidying up my own writing project. Hopefully the virus will clear out soon so the hiatus won’t need to be extended.
Author’s note: This is my feelings after reading the chapter, so major spoilers ahead
Ethan
Yay! Finally the kiss scene is here! But it kind of felt sudden for me, was expecting a bit more build up for it. Guess I’ll fix that up rewriting the scene (LINK)
I think if you didn’t pick the diamond choice, you get to choose whether you will bump into Landry or avoid him in the match? I’m not sure about it. But if you bump into him, Ethan will come fight another doctor to protect MC, that’s hot.
He also jumped in to protect MC when MC was talking to Laundry after the other doctor jumped in. Of course he is keeping an eye on his rookie. And there is the mention of Garret Throne from the other doctor, maybe we will get some scenes about that in the coming chapters?
In the scene in which the gang asked him to join the game, his reaction is gold, made me laugh so hard. Picking the option ‘I’m asking you to’ is the best, he really is doing whatever MC asks for, their relationship is great, whether you are romancing him or not. And picking ‘Tobias is playing’ is also fun, Ethan was onboard hearing that at once, see how much Ethan Freaking Ramsey wanted to beat that annoying human?
Great to see him willing to tell MC more about his relationship with his father, the comparison he made between Naveen and his father is the highlight for me. I always like the confident side of Ethan and how he tried his best pushing himself and others (his rookie) to achieve more. It really shows how he valued himself and his work, good writing from PB there. I want more Naveen scenes! The man’s humor is so interesting!
As you may have known already since I can never stop talking, I like the original back story line for him in book 1 more than in book 2, I simply wanted consistency.
And I reread some chapters in book 1, PB didn’t even bother to keep the setting of Ethan’s house consistent with that in book 1... We all know PB reuse backgrounds, I don’t have problem with that, but at least use the same background for the same setting? How hard is that?!
I heard some choices and Ethan’s responses are changed in book1, but I am too lazy to replay, can anyone update me or point me to screenshots?
Bryce + Keiki
I feel bad for Keiki, she deserved much better. It is great to see their relationship improved. I suppose we will get more chances to be around them, at least helping until Keiki feels good enough to head home.
Sienna
Her screen time in this chapter is limited, but I will highlight how she mentions she can’t imagine people suffering in silence for so long after she heard Jackie’s case. I want to shout in her face, was you also suffering from the stupid intern, yet you say nothing? Either you eat your words or go do something!
Aurora
I believe she simply wanted to help the hospital, as I mentioned in the last chapter’s comment (LINK). But regardless of the choices, her relationship with MC will still take a toll, which is sad, after they have been through quite something.
Aurora really deserved a better boss. In the upcoming chapters I am looking at either she realized she was used by Tobias and tried to fight her own war, or she grew more resentful to MC and the rest of the gang, hoping for the first one though.
Tobias
It sickens me to read about how he played off stealing patients like nothing and used it to tease MC. While Aurora believed that he didn’t know who she was, I doubted that. When MC didn’t know about Harper in book 1, her friends laughed at her, saying she practiced medicine in the woods. It is impossible for Tobias to not know about Harper and not even curious when he knew Aurora’s Last name. Seeing how sneaky the guy is, of course he is going to do some research.
Winning the game against his team turned out satisfying as expected. Seeing the competition between two hospitals is going to get heated either way, it seemed to don’t matter too much who won, except for our ego.
Kyra
Oh… When she said her treatment would be over soon at the beginning of the chapter, I already got a hunch that things will go south with her, and seemingly I am right about that… For once I hope I’m not… But seeing someone in the book has to die, I am now pretty certain it will be her. At least she won’t suffer more pain, right? *cries*
Diamond scene predictions (which are likely to be wrong XD)
Seeing the book is going on hiatus, and we don’t get a description of the next chapter, it is hard to guess what is going to happen. But I am guessing maybe a diamond scene with Kyra which we can comfort her and maybe a Rafael scene talking about his suspension. Since it looked like we will get at least one work related scene and romance related scene, plus occasionally a scene with friends, and the LIs are getting scenes on a rotational way, maybe it will be Rafael’s time soon. And probably a Ethan scene, since he got pretty constant screen time and he mentioned he and MC will talk about that (but only if you romanced him)

Damnit OH will be on hiatus...
I thought waiting for the two-week BB hiatus is bad enough, now we have to wait until the end of May. And who know whether it will extend if the virus is still around...
Someone save me...
