PART 2 OF THE ANIMAL–CHARACTER COMPARISONS!!! TODAY'S VICTIM: KURO ❤️

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR KURO'S ROUTE ‼️

So I was initially really hyped to do his because I love him sm but also because he doesn't talk about his yokai type much. And then I was researching nue and guess what I found?

NOTHING. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. THERE'S NOTHING ABOUT THESE GUYS AT ALL 😭😭

Anyways Kuro's a nue, which is a beast with the head of a monkey, body of a tanuki, tail of a snake, and limbs of a tiger. These are the only "super" interesting things I found about it:

- It was originally believed to be a type of nocturnal bird whose call was similar to that of a White's thrush. Here is a video of its sound! (it's very cute). These birbs usually chill in Eurasia and migrate to parts of southern Asia during winter. RARELY will they migrate to western Europe. It's a lil funny because Kuro's favourite hobby is learning English, he dresses in western clothing, and he works in a circus. Very European things lol.

- In the legend, the nue pond in Nijō park is where Yorimasa washed the arrow he killed the nue with. Idk why he'd go pulling the arrow out and keeping it, maybe as a trophy or something. Kuro's patrol site is Hibiya Park. They're both parks lol. Here's pics of them side by side (I tried to take a Kuro-less ss of Hibiya Park, srry for the circle thing 😭)

ANYWAYS that's like all I found out about nues. I'm so disappointed.

BUT THEN, I read the full page I got the nue pond pic from and saw something in particular: "nue is the Japanese chimera"

SO I WENT DOWN THE CHIMERA RABBIT HOLE INSTEAD:

- Chimera is a ✨️ lady ✨️, and nue's true identity in the legend is Yorimasa's mother. AND the known relative of Kuro's is his beloved grandmother (the rest of his family passed when he was little if I remember correctly). So Kuro probably should have been a gal, but this is an otome game so no lady lol

- I didn't find anything particularly interesting about Chimera itself, but I found another type of Japanese Chimera: Kotobuki. Kotobuki means "congratulations", and its body has parts of all twelve Chinese zodiacs. He's very auspicious 🫡 I thought this ACTUALLY fits Kuro's character because he's a happy-go-lucky guy, always celebrating everything and everyone. Very joyous cinnamon roll. But he's also mysterious (about his past), like nue, so I guess both fit him.

ALSO THIS IS HIS NUE FORM idk why I'm only showing it now lol

The snake doesn't actually exist, but the closest I could find are the red-headed krait (red head, black body) and red neck keelback (green body, red neck only).

- I'll start with krait first. They're VERY VERY VERY VERY VENOMOUS GANG YOU ARE SO DEAD IF IT BITES YOU but they also don't hang around humans much, so their bites are even rarer. The treatment for the bites are drugs that inactivate acetylcholinesterase (enzyme). Nothing interesting about it other than that it's AcetlyCholinEsterase so it abbreviates to AChE lmao. Yes you will ache when this snake bites you. You will ache so much. Kuro's grandmother told him to stay away from humans, and these snakes basically do the same thing. Kinda cool.

- Red neck keelback is also very venomous, but it's also very poisonous (what?!). LET ME TELL YOU SMTH: THESE MFS EAT POISONOUS TOADS AND KEEP THE TOXINS SO THEY CAN RELEASE THEM WHEN NEEDED. BRUH. They also live by ponds, so more ponds to add to Kuro's list, and the females are larger than the males, so another female-dominating species for his list too.

- ALSO Kuro likes hugging. Gin mentioned repeatedly how tightly Kuro hugs him. Just a little reminder that snakes wrap around their prey and squeeze them until they're dead 💕

- OH AND I'M JUST REALISING THAT GINNOJO IS A SERPENT. So Kuro snek and Gin snek are besties. Nice.

Also Kuro etymology: 紅 (ku) "crimson, deep red" and 狼 (ro) "wolf". The crimson makes sense, but WHY WOLF??? Kuro is NOT an alpha. So I had a random thought to search for a red wolf.

Oml you guys these things exist. SO WE GO AGAIN:

- Red wolves are native to southeastern United States, and they're critically endangered 😭😭 2nd most endangered canid species after Ethiopian wolves I think. Anyways, Waya is a Cherokee word that means wolf. It's the largest of the seven traditional Cherokee clans. The wolves are good hunters and protectors of their families. Kuro is very much a family guy (even though he failed to protect them 😔).

If you look at Kuro's battle outfit:

Very hunter-esque. The gloves remind me of samurai bracers, and the shoes are like riding boots (for cavalry). Fun fact his shoes in his regular outfit are actually riding boots lmao.

BTW those birbs from earlier (White's thrush) also have some fun etymology. Zoothera aurea is their binomial name. "Zoon" animal, "theras" HUNTER, "aurea" GOLDEN. MORE GOLD AND HUNTERS. And these birbs have a cousin called scaly thrush (originally thought to be their subspecies). Sooo more scales too!!!

GANG did yall know that Jorogumo (Kage's yokai type) is the golden orb-weaver spider???

So I went manic and found some pretty interesting things:

- These fellas display sexual dimorphism, specifically female gigantism/male dwarfism. So really Kagemaru shouldn't be 5'11. But his whole character is about beauty and pretending to be a woman, so I guess it actually makes sense for him to be tall-ish (he is on the higher end in height among the cast, I checked dw)

- They do have preferences for the seasons!!! I was mostly joking in my last headcanons post about Kage liking summer because of the mosquitoes, but that's actually why these spiders like summer (not just mosquitoes, flying insects in general). They also don't like winter because they're not adapted to it, and they don't like autumn because they usually die then. Kage likes neither, based on his voice lines about them (old pics sorry 😔):

(he seems to hate winter and be saddened by autumn, especially in reference to death)

- They primarily prey on flying insects bc they get caught in their webs. HEAR ME OUT GANG Zantetsu is a kamaitachi so he makes whirlwinds and stuff WHICH REDIRECTS PREY TO KAGE. It's symbiosis bro (not actual prey, more like their victims)

- IF THE FEMALE IS BIG ENOUGH, SHE WILL PREY ON SNAKES. WHAT IS A SNAKE? A SERPENT. WHAT YOKAI IS A SERPENT? MIZUCHI!! And Kage and Gin hate each other 💕 As a side note, the primary enemy of these spiders is the birb, which is funny because Aki's familiar is literally an egret. And then there's also Kuya, the actual birb, but Kage seems mostly indifferent towards him.

- Also the females are very fussy when it comes to mates, and they will only mate with males that have good genes (i mean it's true for most animal species) and Kage only likes people who are strong — bonus points if they're beautiful too.

- They're not considered venomous to humans, shame, but their bites can cause some acute symptoms. The treatment, from what I've read, is usually calcium gluconate. Take a look at its 3D structure versus a section of a golden orb-weaver's web:

- QUADRILATERALS!!! Ik it probably doesn't mean anything, but I thought it was cool anyways.

Okay yap's over. I just thought this was all some really nice parallels, even if they likely weren't intentional and I am reading WAY too far into it.

Silly ARR Headcanons

(spoilers ahead watch out 🤫)

- Aoi occasionally puts in coloured contact lenses of the opposite colour in his eyes (yellow in the green eye and green in the yellow eye) to mess with Oji

- Shizuki took Toichiro's shed fur (also hc that he sheds) and stuffed it in a pillow. He gifted it to Kuya when he wore a hole in his, and he's never found out... 🤫

- Koga was a bit reckless using his powers once and a little girl saw him in his ayakashi form, and the only way to get her to keep quiet about it was letting her decorate his horns. So he went home with some bows on his horns that day.

- SPEAKING OF DECORATING AYAKASHI FEATURES, headcanoning (wtf) that Oji has a form with all 100 eyes, and he's 100% tried putting makeup on all of them don't fight me on this

- I know Shizuki's broken some invaluable ornament Toichiro bought, but he just... hid it... and threw it away... silently... "Toichiro-Sama, you owned no such item. Your frivolous spending has gotten to your head. Perhaps it would be in your favour to spend wisely next month."

- Koga invited the twins to go for hotpot once, but Yura started mixing his with sweet bean paste so he never invited them again.

- I KNOW Yura got his flute stolen by a critter before, but his slow ass couldn't catch it, so he had to beg Gaku to go find it for him 👉👈

- Oh and Aki's egret has definitely poked him in the ass before.

- Headcanon that Kuro's snakes on his beast form are separate living entities. When Ginnojo finds mice in his plumbing or something (don't ask me why he has mice in his home), he just hands them over to Kuro to feed to his snakes.

- And Yura (without the curse) can definitely charm the snakes.

- Just remembering that Oboro is a mouse so it probably won't go well for him if he meets Kuro in his beast form.

- What sort of headcanons list would this be if I didn't include my BOYFRIEND?? Kagemaru doesn't only like summer because he hates Shizuki and because he can wear loose kimono and look sexy in them. It's mosquito season, so he just plucks them from the air and eats them. Spider stuff, I guess...

- Kage's used his spiderwebs? Spider threads? in place of yarn before to play with Nachi in his cat form. Or just cats in general.

- And now that we've mentioned animal behaviours, Yakumo's bat ass sleeps upside down. He can recreate the Spiderman scene with his doll if he wants to.

- I ALMOST FORGOT KYONOSUKE. He canonically takes care of the flowers in Mrs Oyama's garden, and I imagine that he did when he was younger too, maybe as his way of expressing gratitude or compensating her for adopting him? ANYWAYS when he was younger, he definitely got stung by ivy and pricked by thorns because he didn't know what the hell he was doing, and he got his ass handed to him by Taketora.

- BONUS BECAUSE I ALREADY MENTIONED HIM AND I CAN'T JUST NOT TALK ABOUT HIM NOW: yes he was a strict father with high expectations for his sons, but his boys knew that they could go to him if they needed anything ❤️

- this is supposed to be silly not sweet

- MRS OYAMA IS NOT AFRAID TO SMACK TAKETORA WHEN HE PUTS CASUAL CLOTHING ON (it's canon he also has an atrocious fashion sense)

Fan Fiction for Ayakashi Romance Reborn

Summary: This is for all the ARR fans who failed to recover their account due to inactivity. Sometimes it really gets hard to love a 2D guy but we still fall for them all the time. This is like some sort of monologue, but ig it still counts as fic?

I dedicate this to all ARR stans. I really really love the ARR community. Although we may be small, it was a supportive and warm community. I made my tumblr bc of ARR and became more active online to find mutuals which I never regretted – just regretted that I didn’t find the community sooner. I love you all! XOXO

I missed him. It's been more than a year since we last saw each other. We just naturally drifted apart after everything that happened. I still like him but we lost touch with each other. I got so preoccupied with my own life that I haven't contacted him for a while. But that doesn’t mean that he’s not on my mind. I constantly think about him. I remember him when I see items that are associated with him. Heck, I even remember him when I see someone that resembles his hair color, his haircut, his voice and whatever else it is about him that I see in someone else.

I still have his pictures saved on my phone. I still look at them from time to time, especially those times when I miss him. But that was still not enough to contact him. I read stories written about him from different POVs because through those, I can catch another glimpse of him, but I still stopped short of contacting him.

It’s not like we separated on bad terms but it was so sudden that at that time, I just can’t believe I won’t be seeing more of him. I won’t ever get to know him more or hear his stories more.

To be fair, he told me about his departure at least about a month in advance. But that doesn’t mean I was ready for it. I was far from ready. Some of my friends properly bade him goodbye. Others opted to spend time with him as much as they could. But I just stood there, unable to say anything. Still, you looked and smiled at me for the last time despite the words left unsaid.

Now, after more than a year, I heard about you again. I was frantic to see your face again after I saw that post saying that it might not be possible to meet you the same way again after one year of not contacting you. My friends felt as frantic as I did. We all tried to reach you again. But it was in vain. I regret being unable to tell you how much I missed you. And now the only way to see you is through the pictures I have on my phone. I miss you so much even though I know that you don’t really miss me too.
