After a very rocky couple of weeks handling the mental health struggles in our household, we're ready to release some new content. Meet Jayna, the second subject/participant in our mental health expressions photo project. Some of you may know the significance of #semicolon tattoos relating to mental health. Compare/contrast the semicolon (signifying mental health struggles) with success/graduation from university. Two days ago, Jan at @ebullitionbrew and I connected regarding a need for artwork by Saturday for Enullition's "#Valenstein" event. I let them know I had some work ready to go, but that it would be a mixed display of landscapes and some of the newer abstract prints because that's what I have on-hand. I couldn't set this up yesterday because I was working a 12hr shift at my regular job, but here it is today. The thing that went through my head today during my setup was, "Why in the world haven't I just written that equation on spacing my art out evenly on the inside of my toolbox already?". And then, for the bottom row, "How to I change this equation to equally space these 6 photos such that the end hanging points hit the center points of the end images on the top row?". And then, of course, I hit some metal studs, but luckily, I had concrete nails I bought today to punch though such that the screws would grab hold like I needed them to. I took this HDR set the as the sun came up one morning during one of my road trips. I remember the air was cold there, relative to San Diego that is, which isn't saying much I suppose. Sleeping in your car on trips makes the cold bite a little bite harder. On really cold mornings, the battle going on in your mind is actually, "Do I really want to leave this warm car to go out there and set up this shot? Is this shot going to be worth it?" On my solo road trips, I don't pre-plan sunrise and sunset photo locations. My goal is just to keep on driving and hope to be lucky enough to find a nice scene to shoot as the sun is getting ready to rise or set. I've been consistently lucky :), so much so that I wonder whether it's actually the case you'd be lucky to actually miss a good sunrise or sunset HDR when out in nature.... But I probably won't be saying that in places where it's almost always overcast :). We have a creative photo shoot or two coming up this month, and we'll be sharing content from these projects as I finish up the image edits from those sessions. The Garage Chronicles (our photo studio is in our garage) We were going to do a MeToo scene we had jotted down, but once the tasks for the day were as complete as they were going to be, she wasn't in a state be able to match the mental mind frame that shot required. So I said, "Ok, how do you feel?" She said, "Tired of everything." "That's OK. We'll try it another day, and if you want, we can photograph a regular or tired look today." I went to the garage and set up the one-lightbulb scene I had been thinking of for a while now. I've literally had this light bulb on a rope contraption for probably 2 or 3 years now and I've only used it once. Maybe 45 minutes later, she walks into the garage. "What should I wear?" she said. "Let's go for dark colors. I want a floating head look, just to mess with people. The light still works, and as we discussed photo ideas based on her journaling, I had her sit in the chair I had already set up, and I settled on 5 second exposures as we chatted away.
