Restless Nights

Summary: Darion can't seem to sleep, so he decides to get up and make some tea. He tries his best not to wake up Secondo, but, uh. It doesn't work out super well.

Darion has been tossing and turning for hours, his mind racing seemingly for the sole purpose of keeping him awake. This wasn’t a new problem—he would often wake up late in the night, sweating heavily as if he had somehow run a marathon during his rest. Maybe he had, he thinks, as his mind sure wasn’t slowing down its pace anytime soon.

Next to him, his lover sleeps peacefully, soft snores occasionally breaking the silence. Darion smiles—it wasn’t often Secondo would find the time to rest as deeply as he was now. Even with him being retired, he’s frequently dragged away to meetings by Sister—more so now than usual, as they prepare to send his younger brother off on tour.

Sighing, Darion decides to slowly shift off the bed; it was useless to wait for sleep to come naturally, he thinks.

Taking extra care to make sure he doesn’t wake up Secondo, he opens their—already slightly ajar—bedroom door and makes his way to their small kitchen.

He doesn’t bother to flip on the big light, not wanting it to peek under their bedroom door and potentially wake his lover, so he settles for squinting in the dark to find their electric kettle. During his search, he attempts to walk forward in the dark; a BAD idea. Apparently, during the day, one of them decided it was a wonderful idea to leave the wooden stool in the middle of the damn floor. So, as he trips forward and ultimately lands on his face with a loud THUMP, he groans in defeat—splaying his limbs out on the floor like a starfish.

A few seconds later, the light flicks on.

“...Amore? I’m not positive that is the comfiest place to be lying.”

Darion groans again.

“Mm. Right here is great, actually. Perfect for my old man bones.”

“I’m older than you. Now get up, we both know the floor is less than sanitary.” Secondo sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose.

Chuckling, Darion lifts himself off the ground and to his feet.

“Care to tell me why you’re out of bed and making a racket at such an hour?” Secondo raises an eyebrow.

“I was going to make tea,” he dusts himself off, “but it turns out light is strictly necessary for seeing stools in the middle of the floor.” He smirks at his dutifully unimpressed fiancé.

“I’m sorry for waking you up, love. I know how little sleep you get.”

“I could say the same for you.” After a second, Secondo continues.

“I’ll make the tea, and then we will go back to bed. Va bene?” he says, moving towards the kettle.

It’s not so much a question as it is a demand, Darion realizes.

“..Si. Yes. Thank you.”

After setting the kettle to boil, Secondo leads them both to the small table in the corner, gesturing for the other to sit.

A few seconds of silence pass, but eventually Secondo speaks up.

“You have not been sleeping through the night much lately. I will talk to Primo in the morning and have him send something to help.”

Darion smiles, but shakes his head.

“That’s not neces-”

“No buts. We both know how stressed you have been lately, amore. Let me help you as you help me.”

With no energy for a rebuttal, Darion sighs and nods in acknowledgement.

Eventually, the soft, familiar click of the kettle turning off disrupts the silence.

“Rimanere, I will get it.”

As his love goes to prepare their tea, Darion rests his arms on the wooden surface of the table, head leaning on his left hand. His ring is digging into his cheek, but he doesn’t mind.

“Sono innamorato di te.” He smiles.

Secondo’s shoulders seem to relax as he looks back, smirking.

“I know.”

Soft laughter fills the room as he brings over the full mugs, placing them in front of their respective spots.

“Fai attenzione, è caldo. Soffia prima su di esso.”

As Secondo lifts the cup to his lips, Daimon chuckles.

“Sono un esperto nel soffiare.” He winks.

Secondo sputters, tea spilling onto the table as he scowls and shoots a glare at the man in front of him; Daimon’s too busy laughing to even notice, lifting up his own glass.

“I will put you back on the floor where I found you, stronzo.”

Daimon laughs harder, spilling some of his own tea. The look Secondo gives him then could kill a man.

In due time, they both get to the bottom of their respective mugs.

“Thank you, love. I really appreciate this.”

“Si, si. Non è un problema.” Secondo waves his hand, his face turning a bit pink. “Just come to bed.”

Smiling, Daimon places both their mugs in the sink and follows him to their bed, eventually slinking under the covers. He shifts closer to Secondo, resting his head on the other man’s chest. The—still a little flustered—former Papa rolls his eyes, but allows it, running his hand through Daimon’s hair.

“Buonanotte, amore.”

Darion is 43 yrs old, and has currently served 11 years in the ministry (This AU is set during the beginning of the Impera tour [2022])!

He used to be the main makeup artist for the Papas when they're on tour, but got promoted to Secondo's secretary! (they're uh..dating btw..TO BE CRINGE IS TO BE FREE OKAY 💔💔)

He's fluent in Latin (teaches it to the siblings sometimes in classes he holds), a bit iffy in Italian but knows enough to understand when the Papas speak it! Sometimes..LOL

Also, in this AU thingamabobber, the Papa's are NOT human, though some are less human than others (Perpetua is the least). They're something akin to a vampire but like not quite. Just thought it would be kinda cool LMAOO

He's pretty good friends with Primo, and helps out in the garden whenever he's able! It's calming to him to just take care of things, and seeing his hard work pay off when the flower finally blooms is his favorite part!
