October is only fives months away. So, if you haven’t started planning your halloween costume you’re clearly behind.
Tumblr media
I can’t even plan what’s happening in the next two weeks, so I definitely haven’t. I’m guessing you’ve already got yours planned out, then?

Naveen watched as Eliana spit out the pacifier again and began to play with it now that it wasn’t going anywhere. He turned back to the woman and her son. She was young and she was likely as alone as he was which is why she understood how hard this could be. He was glad he wasn’t the only one.
“It is very tough especially when it is an unexpected surprise. I had no idea what it was to be responsible. She has taught me a lot in the few weeks that I’ve had her. The sleepless night are the worst! I cannot figure out how to get her back to sleep if she wakes up so most of the time I stay awake with her when she is.” Naveen thought of the night before when the little angel woke up at 3 and had refused to go back to sleep until 7 when he had to start getting ready for class. He chuckled as the boy chewed on the spoon. “As difficult as they can be, they are also very rewarding. A smile is enough to motivate me most days. I do feel like I make more mistakes than I should. Eliana is five months old.”
Tumblr media
A small, fond smile crossed Kandace’s face as she watched the girl fumble with the pacifier. She could recall when Joey was that little - though truthfully, he didn’t really qualify as being much older or developmentally advanced - but she knew how hard it was going to be for the man. As rewarding as children were, Kandace was no stranger to how difficult they made life at times.
“There’s not really a solution to it, unfortunately. I guess you just kind of learn how to function on less, so you’ll get used to it eventually. Plus, they start to sleep more as they get older, so it can only get better from here.” Joey still kept her up some nights, but it was nowhere compared to when he was really little. She could recall sleepless nights of bouncing him, trying to get him to stop crying and just get some rest. Needless to say, she was thankful that he managed to sleep through the nights most nights now. “That’s the best part of it, though. There’s no instruction manual, so mistakes are a given, but you learn eventually. It gets easier. If it’s any consolation, she’s so young that if you make mistakes, she won’t remember it. As long as you’re doing your best, that’s enough.”

“Okay, if you’re gonna call me Melrose freaking Aguilera then you can go right back the way you came because I’ve already had one person too many talk to me about that ridiculous show today.”
Tumblr media
“Melrose who?” Kandace had to at least half mask the confused expression that was threatening to tug at her features at any moment, instead choosing to simply shake her head vehemently in response. “No, no, nothing to do with whatever that is. I was just wondering if you’ve seen a stuffed kangaroo around here recently.”

“Looks important.” Eyeing the mess the little boy had made Eeyore let out a soft laugh, scooping up all of the napkins from her own table. She could almost feel the secondhand stress coming from Kandace. “Here, dolly, don’t flip. I’ll help.”
Tumblr media
Kandace groaned as she glanced over at her son, who was well near covered in the strawberry milkshake she’d been intending on enjoying on her own, instantly bracing herself for some sort of crude joke or dismissal. However, that never came. “Wha-” She started, bewildered as she glanced between the girl and the napkins before responding quickly, “I... I’d appreciate that. Thank you.”

“No, no - It’s nothing important, just casting an eyeball for some napkins.” Sparing a glance over at her table, which was currently covered in milkshake with a strangely suspicious looking two year old in the middle of it all. “A ton of ‘em, if you can manage.”
Tumblr media
“You got something important to say or you just here to give me a big tickle?”

Gotta say, it’s weird being back here in Nowheresville.  It’s like nothing’s changed.

Are you insinuating that anything in this place has changed in the past five years? ‘Cause if you are, that’s definitely a panic and a half.”

love can be a losing game
Kandace Roo was everything a soc should be. The image of the homecoming queen, pageant crowns and all, she’d practically been bred to be the popular girl in school, the one that had her act put together. Sure, her family life wasn’t the most functional in the world, but it seemed like the entire Roo clan was good at putting on a show for the neighbors and for the high society of town if it meant keeping a spotless reputation. For the most part, little Kandace was living every girl’s dream.
And then good-for-nothing greaser Danny Petersen came along on that damn motorcycle of his and damn it, she was a goner. She fell hard and fast for him, spurred on by the almost taboo nature of their relationship and the danger of dealing with a bad boy, and from the moment she laid eyes on him, Kandace was willing to give him the world if it meant she had him. And yes, she did give him the world and her virginity right along with it, and where did it get her?
Pregnant and alone.
Danny ended up going off to the military without her as soon as she broke the news that she was pregnant, leaving former good girl Kandace alone, marked as a floosy with an illegitimate baby to match. It’s a good thing that she absolutely adores the kid, because otherwise she would’ve probably long since run off to hide. She’s now living with her parents who pretty much make her life hell, and since the pregnancy, she’s been on the outs with the socs. She’s not hard enough to be a greaser, and especially having a kid it doesn’t seem like the most responsible decision to make to join in with a bunch of hooligans, so it seems like she’s currently on the outs of the social system in general, hopelessly devoted to a man who ran at the mere mention that she was having his child.
love can be a shame
Again, no connections! Her social life has seriously struggled since it came out that she was pregnant, so who knows what could go here. Ex-friends, people that knew the baby daddy, new pals that she’s kind of made out of convenience... the list goes on and on.
i know of a loving fool, and that fool is me

The shadow man had been avoiding anyone and everyone in sight. Keeping himself occupied with unusual small tasks. The voices always in the background offering him their ‘advice’.
Tumblr media
“What do you want?” He asked as he picked up his head from the table.
Kandace jumped, having not expected the man to have been awake, much less sit upright and talk to her. She was admittedly just looking for napkins, which her table was woefully lowon="" and Joey was desperately in need of judging by the food smeared on his face. “Sorry.” She winced in a half-apology, shrugging her shoulders as held up the stack of napkins she’d pilfered  from the table. “I just, uh...needed these. Clearly. But... Are you okay?”

Kandace watched the little girl with a fond smile on her face, tucking her chin into her hand. It hadn’t been that long ago that Joey had been that young, though he was still a menace all things considered. Regardless, She also knew how difficult it could be and being as busy as she already was, she wouldn’t have traded him for any younger age at this point.
“It’s tough even when you have time to plan, so I can’t imagine what you’re dealing with. Kids will do that. They’re actually really great teachers at responsibility, though I definitely wouldn’t recommend it unless you have to or you’re actually prepared. Yeah, you’ll learn that coffee is going to be your best friend now. I’m pretty sure I’m practically running on the stuff by now.” Her expression shifted to something gentler as she listened to him, her own son secured on her hip as she squeezed him to her a fraction tighter. “My son is my everything, so I know what you mean. It’s amazing how quickly they begin to grow on you once you have them. Aw, how sweet. Joey’s going to be a year old in May - I’ve got no idea where the time went, but it goes fast.”

Naveen had never been so grateful for something so small. He took the pacifier clip from her with a beaming smile. He could cry. Maybe he was more exhausted than he thought.
“Thank you so much.” Naveen took a clean pacifier and immediately attached it before putting it back in the baby girl’s mouth. “It does not matter if she races cars or sails ships as long as she is happy. It is holding her last clean pacifier so it’s serving it’s purpose so the little pictures do not matter. I am very grateful for your kindness.”
Tumblr media
Kandace completely understood the look of relief on the man’s face. Being a single parent was hard - really hard - and she could remember times where she just needed someone to reach out and help. Maybe this was her way of giving back.
“Not a problem,” she responded flippantly, waving a hand in a gesture for him to save the gratitude, “Being a parent is tough, especially when you’re young and having to balance school. This one has given me more sleepless nights than I care to admit.” At that, she pointed across her table at Roo, who was now apparently missing the point of a spoon and had decided it was better to just chew on the plastic part than actually putting food on it. “He’s learning, I promise. You will too, though, so don’t sweat it. How old is she?”

naveeninmaldonia:
Naveen was learning to adapt to having a baby with him at almost all times of the day. He had Eliana balanced on his hip as he picked up her pacifier that she’d launched to the floor from her seat. He finished placing her in the baby seat that he’d attached to the high chair. It’s funny how a trip to the coffee house so he could do his homework was now a mission. He’d just settled into his seat when his darling little girl spit out her new clean pacifier onto the floor again.
“Very good, bela menina. Much further than last time.” Naveen couldn’t help the sigh. He was a lot more tired than he wanted to admit.
Tumblr media
It would have been hard not to notice the boy struggling with the baby, but it especially didn’t completely go over Kandace’s head. She related all too well to something as simple as the look on the boy’s face, the exhaustion and exasperation that could only come from having a child, and while she felt the slightest bit relieved to know she wasn’t the only student on campus dealing with it, she also felt bad for him. Hence, in a manner that was way out of character for her, she decided to speak up and help him out from one parent to another.
“Here,” she piped up, digging in her diaper bag before pulling out one of Joey’s pacifier clips, “This might be helpful. Sure, it’s got racecars on it, but y’know... who cares about gendered crap like that, anyways?” With a small, hesitant smile, she reached it out towards him with an open palm, and judging by the distance the baby’s pacifier went, she knew he needed it.

“All I’m saying is with the right set of markers and pre-k level art skills, you can make a pair of thrift store shoes look as good as any old Chuck Taylors.”

“Hey, I’m not arguing with you on that one. I’ll be the first one to say that name brands are way too overpriced, plus most of the time the product doesn’t even look like something you’d pay a ton of money for. I’d say my art skills are at a solid prenatal level at best, but if you wanna hook a guy up...”

“I never realized that it was that big of a deal. I wasn’t really allowed to watch that much TV when it was on, but I do remember listening to the soundtrack in the car every now and then. Sure, the only song I actually remember was the one about poppng to the top or whatever it’s called, but at least that’s something.”

justeeyore:
“Nothing is ever perfect. Really,” she promised. She didn’t answer that question. She couldn’t remember the last time she looked at photos. It only reminded her how much had changed. She didn’t want to think about the past, how happy she’d been. “I’ll tell him that…” Her words trailed off. She wouldn’t be able to tell him. When Joey was old enough to talk and walk and comprehend things better, he and Kandace would no longer be a part of her life. They would be living somewhere else surrounded by other people. He would grow up without knowing her. That thought stung a little. She wasn’t sure if Kandace knew it or not, but she was one of her best friends. Of course, she didn’t have anyone trying to take her place. But the girl was still a comforting presence. She’d even grown attached to Joey, albeit unwillingly. She’d gotten them both Christmas gifts. She wasn’t the best when it came to shopping and she didn’t have much money to spend, but she’d found a little donkey stuffed animal that she hoped he might like. She thought he could snuggle with to chase the bad dreams away. For Kandace she’d gotten a Starbucks card for the days she needed a caffeine boost to get through her classes and a super mom pin. “He’ll know you tried,” she eventually replied, changing her sentence. He would, even if Eeyore wasn’t around to tell him so. Kanga wouldn’t make the mistakes her parents had. “Just don’t yell at him too much and he’ll be okay.”
Tumblr media
“Try telling that to my family,” Kandace responded dryly, taking a deep exhale through her nose. Christmas time in the Roo household back before the baby debacle had ever happened was something she would easily describe as perfect. Sure, her mother was a vindictive housewife who demanded to live vicariously through her daughter, but Kandace could give her one thing for credit: the woman was meticulous about holidays. Now everything was different, and suddenly she was the one having to carry all that weight on her shoulders. Kandace was preparing herself for some debbie-downer comment, something that she’d just have to brush aside and try to avoid any effects from, but what actually came out was unexpected. He’ll know you tried. Even if Eeyore’s words seemed flippant, a simple warning if anything, Kandace could read between the lines. She’d spent months convincing herself that she wasn’t enough, that she’d done her son a disservice by keeping him instead of giving him up for adoption like everyone had wanted her to. On top of that, she’d spent so much time ruminating over the fact that her parents wanted nothing to do with her that for the first time in her life, she felt truly alone. Well, she would have, at least, if it weren’t for Eeyore. The girl was depressing and negative, but that hadn’t changed the fact that she had somehow managed to become as close of a friend as anyone else in her life. Even though she still missed Christopher dearly as if she’d only seen her best friend yesterday, having her there seemed to take the sting away, and she knew in her heart of hearts that no matter what, she was going to keep the girl close no matter what. It was enough to make a lump form in her throat, the sentimental nature of the conversation and the pent-up frustration of the holiday season finally getting to her emotions. In one quick motion, she pulled the girl into a tight hug, muttering two words after a long pause. “Thank you.” And in truth, that was all that needed to be said; her point was clear. After a long moment, she finally pulled away, allowing Eeyore her personal space as she commented wryly, “Sorry, y’know how the holiday season goes. It’s really great at making people all sentimental and stuff.”
