modern scholarship that leaves quotes untranslated sucks but at least the quotes are usually in modern languages so you can stick them in google translate. if your footnotes are untranslated hieroglyphs or cuneiform im legally allowed to stab you to death

i don’t know why but i’m really amused by the winner of some ‘new kanji’ contest:
compare with the real kanji
座 (seat/gathering), but the two 人 (person) radicals have been moved from next to each other within the 土 (earth) radical to diagonally from each other, making this “social distance(d seating/gathering)”

Okay this is ENTIRELY speculation but I wonder whether the semantic broadening of “thing” in English and other Germanic languages is related somehow to the semantic scope of the word “res” in Latin, which can mean simply “thing,” but also refers to “business,” or “matter.” The re– in “republic” comes from “res” (basically, “republic” means “public affairs.”) It seems like the Germanic languages that broadened their “thing” equivalent out from “assembly” are the Germanic languages which had the most contact with Latin?
One of the weird things about American culture is the tendency to refer to things by brand name, as opposed to the product name.
For example, I’ve known people to say Kleenex when they meant tissue. I’ve heard people use Hoover instead of vacuum.
And it gets to a point with certain things that some people can’t distinguish the difference.
Weedwhacker is a brand. How many people know the real term is “string trimmer”? Jell-O is a brand. And it’s so pervasive that people call literally any gelatin dessert “jello” even if it’s not made by Jell-O. Tupperware! That’s a brand!
The one thing that constantly messes with my head, though:
DUMPSTER IS A BRAND.
AND I HAVE GENUINELY NO IDEA WHAT TO CALL A DUMPSTER OTHER THAN A DUMPSTER.

The Circular Etymology of the Neanderthal
Neanderthals are a relatively young—or new—species of man.
They are named after their location of discovery: das Neanderthal (Neander valley).
Neander valley is named after a 17th century German theologian called Joachim Neander.
His surname is the hellenized form (Νέ-ανδρος < νέος ἀνήρ) of the German Neumann which literally translates to new man,—thus closing the circle.
