Connections is wrong about something today. For linguistics reasons. Since Twitter doesn’t exist anymore, I’m trusting you to reboot this enough that the NY Times will pay attention to it.

This poll is about the US state. Not the rapper.
The examples ("X as in X") are pollmonger's approximation to help those who don't read IPA; those words obviously will vary in other accents. Also, if there are any issues with the IPA, not my fault/I'm doing my best/it's not that serious/submit your questions in IPA if it's that big a deal.
We ask your questions anonymously so you don’t have to! Submissions are open on the 1st and 15th of the month.

Okay we gotta talk about the phonetic choices of provider. Like that shit is deliberate. Once again Vessel cannot be trusted with diphthongs he a becomes too powerful. He seduces the listenener with sexy diphthongs and its so dangerous.
But anyway its interesting because Americanizing accents for music is so often encouraged and so his not lowering his tongue for that "i" in provider and it's rhymes is very noteworthy espectially paired with a following derhotacized syllable. he leans into his accent in a beautiful way.
Sleep Token often gets compared to Hozier and this song is deliberately leaning into it. The choice to lean into a native accent with hightened tongue for that particular diphthong while having that instrumentation at the start is evoking Hozier. But then the derhotacized schwa signals the listener that this isn't Hozier. this isn't and Irish accent, its an english one. Like how Sleep Token isn't anything it evokes it's its own thing.
I have more thoughts, but this is what I will say for now. The phonetics of sleep token is fundamentally interesting. One of the many reasons Vessel is such a talented vocalist is because he plays with his mouth sounds. and I love him for it.

Hyperforeignism is when speakers mispronounce foreign words by applying incorrect patterns, often overcomplicating them. Examples include saying "habanero" as "habañero," "coup de grâce" with an exaggerated French accent, and "Beijing" with a "zh" sound instead of a "j."

Hiya! Would you mind making a "Pokemon go" blinkie with perhaps a dratini in it if it fits?
And if it's not too much trouble, perhaps a "phonetics rock!" one as well? Thank you very much in advance :3

So, this question is a bit of a weird one, but you know how the IPA chart has white spaces for sounds that hypothetically could exist but aren't known (as yet) to exist in any natural language? Have you or any of you and/or your colleges considered experimenting with creating a conlang to include one or more of those hypothetical sounds? Not necessarily as something you could use for a show or film or something, but just to mess around to test/show off your skills and have fun.
Oh, sure, plenty of conlangers have. Some even design sound systems for alternate vocal tracts (e.g. for aliens or animals). For myself, it doesn't interest me artistically. Theoretically, sure, but if I'm going to sit down and create a language, I prefer to go different routes. If you click around in the conlang tab here you may find your way to someone who's done some pretty cool stuff, though.

This cat's name is Peaches, and she is my role model. But let's talk about Russian phonetics.
My neighbours once told me that they honestly believed that her name is Bitches. When I call her home, this is what they hear: Bitches. And there are at least two linguistic reasons why this happens. First, in Russian, we don't have tense and lax vowels. It took me a while just to learn to hear the difference between 'shit' and 'sheet', and I am still tying to re-train my articulation apparatus to make this distinction when I speak. So, "peaches" may well sound like 'pitches' to my English speaking neighbours.
But why B? Well, in Russian, we put a lot of energy to consonants, and we don't aspirate. Even though P is devocalized, the energy I put in P is enough to confuse my poor neighbours. Russian is simply more energy-fuelled and less "breathy" than English.
Well, anyway, Peaches is very independent, always knows what she wants, always looking to make the most of the moment and enjoys life to the fullest. She turned 11 years old a couple of weeks ago and is the happiest cat in the world.

It has been two years of listening to sleep token and I am still obsessed with vessel’s wacky mouth sounds. He does things with his breath, his vowels and consonants that are so deliberate that I can’t help but obsess over. Sometimes I get fixated on the fact that somewhere there are extremely high quality audio files of his vocals and yet I can’t have them. I want to run them through my software and analyze the sound waves. But instead I play vocals only YouTube videos into my computer. What good is a M.A. in speech and hearing science if I can’t get the high quality spectrograms I want. Will Ramos’s larynx is not enough for the SLP’s who like metal community. I will never be satisfied.
(This is a joke obviously. I listened to caramel. I’m not entitled to audio files. I just crave knowledge. But I respect boundaries and am happy with the amount I am given. I’m trying to say I like the new album and am going to tunnel vision on phonemes again. While also shouting out Will Ramos for participating in a YouTube video where he had a laryngoscopy)
