That ol’ chart of mine makes the rounds online periodically and it drives me crazy because it’s frankly not very good. So, I finally got around to remaking it.

I doubt this will get anywhere near as popular, but I wanted to make it.

One random thing that I love is the tireless effort of birders/ornithologists to try and phonetically render all the bird calls into text in an accurate manner. I am so bad at processing sounds that I could literally never do this. Like how many times would you have to listen to that bird call before deciding which letters to place in what order??

I have been challenging myself to listen to a bird call, try and write down my translation, then look up the accepted birder one to compare… let’s just say I am not fluent in bird

I’m obsessed with vessels wacky mouth sounds. The inhales exhales he leaves audible. The sucking of air through his teeth. The way he removes voicing from voiced stops at the end of utterances. It shouldn’t work, it should sound like its unvoiced counterparts, but it works. It’s a magic trick. I’m obsessed with how he pronounces his diphthongs, painstakingly drawing out the gliding of his tongue from one place to another. My theory is that he must be very familiar with certain concepts of phonetics in order to pull off all the techniques that he does. And that knowledge makes him beautiful to listen to.

i feel bad when non-native English speakers apologise for making mistakes or getting confused like babe no you're doing great. this isn't on you. the fact that I've seen so many native English speakers mispronounce the word pronunciation and misspell the word spelling should tell you everything you need to know about this goddamn language.
