Do you have any original characters that you would like to talk about or bring more attention to?
Do I?!?!?!
I actually have a whole side blog dedicated to a group of my OCs (@kimberlyandcotv) that I haven’t put as much effort into mostly because I’ve been doing a lot of fan stuff. But I’ve been developing these guys for a few years to make them part of a series I’m hoping to make some decent leeway in this year. To briefly explain a couple of them:
Kimberly, the “main” character, is a psychologist building up a repertoire of being a counselor/therapist focusing on helping people amend their relationships while actively avoiding fixing her own; specifically with her dad. When we say this girl has daddy issues, a lot of her terrible life decisions are based on her trying to get him to acknowledge her existence and see her in a sliver of a positive light. and she’s still being judged by some of them today.
Fabian is a full theater kid and is the biggest flirt known to mankind. He loves playing different roles and personalities because he never felt people wanted him, just somebody else. He recently converted to Christianity and is trying to learn/understand stability in Christ while also learning to stick to one thing with everything else.
Maddie is low-key a self-insert. Likes TMNT, likes My Little Pony, draws for a living (if only that could be me), and like a lot of color. What’s different is, while acting and appearing happy and content with life, it’s all a mask. There’s some deep-rooted fear of rejection and unresolved trauma from her shaky relationship with her mom. But that was like, ages ago and definitely won’t negatively affect her first serious relationship or anything like that.
And there’s the other six of that series that I’m more than willing to go into. Other than that, there are two other stories I say I have characters I’m invested in, but I’m not sure how much is worth sharing. One of them is still early in development and I don’t know what’s up with the characters aside from their names and general collective goal. The other is a fantasy story I’ve been working for… ever, but now kind of doing an overhaul of… everything. Can confirm that the main female lead is ambitious and a bit idealistic and wants to do what she can to help others but a secret unknownst to her could make that difficult. and the main male lead has a duty thrust upon him he doesn't want, but is willing to do so long as it helps towards his goals.

people might think creating OC lore involves a lot of thinking & planning, but in my personal experience, OC development is more like a divine vision from a god slamming you over the head with a mallet while ur doing the fuckin dishes or folding laundry

The sad and harsh reality is that you only think of me when you need something or when life gets tough. That’s when you remember I exist. But me? You’re on my mind constantly. It hurts knowing I care so deeply while you only seem to remember me when it’s convenient for you.

scenarios for that grump x sunshine dynamic
a prompt list by @novelbear ᵔᴥᵔ
letting their chatty partner ramble about their day, listening with a small smile
sunshine toppling over them with the biggest hug they could muster and grump just giving them tiny little pats to reciprocate
grumpy going out of their comfort zone to cheer up their sunshine who's having a bad day
^ "look, i made pancakes! i even made a smiley face out of the whipped cream, see?" "oh, that's what it's supposed to be? you're so cute.."
grumpy calling sunshine names (dummy, idiot, chatterbox) knowing they take no offense to them, but the moment someone else does, they snap
"are you always this happy?" "i try to be, but especially when i'm with you."
sunshine knowing when it's okay to push but never crosses a line when it comes to grumpy's boundaries
sunshine comforting the grump when they're a little more quiet and snappy than usual, leaving grump a flustered mess because they're used to people actually listening when they tell them to leave them alone
"i'm not leaving you like this, i care about you."
sunshine taking grumpy on more active dates than they're used to (like ice skating for example)
[while cloudgazing] "i see a duckling!" "literally how."
sunshine making lunch for grumpy in the cutest way possible (little notes, heart-shaped sandwiches, always adding their fave snack)
getting into arguments about how nice sunshine can be and where it gets out of hand
^ "i was just trying to be nice!" "they were clearly taking advantage of that!" "since when do you care so much?" "i'm trying to look out for you!"
grumpy letting sunshine play with/do their hair
when laundry piles up and grumpy has no choice but to borrow one of sunshine's colorful little sweaters
^ and of course, sunshine coos and smothers them all day over it
"i love you." "i know." "say it back!"

The Anthropology
I made a small collection of various writing things for my series concept and put it up on Archive of Our Own. Some things will also be published here with links to the A03 version if people want to read it that way. It would mean a lot if you were to check it out and subscribe to it for whenever I add to it

How Your Characters Might Flirt Using Food (Because Food = Love)
Because sometimes “I love you” sounds like “did you eat?”
“I saved the last piece for you.” → Literal affection disguised as generosity.
“This isn’t as good as the one you like, but it’s close.” → Translation: I pay attention.
“Try this. No, just—trust me.” → Feeding them is flirting. End of story.
“I remembered you don’t like onions, so I left them out.” → That’s a love letter.
“I burned it. You’re eating it anyway.” → Domestic chaos = love language unlocked.
“You always steal bites, so I got you your own.” → He saw, he adapted. Soulmate.
“You’re not allowed to fall in love with anyone who cooks better than me.” → Petty? Maybe. Adorable? Absolutely.
#perfect for Luci#food is her love language#so this is how she’d show affection#writer on tumblr#original characters

Grumpy x Sunshine – Romantic Gestures They’d Actually Do
GRUMPY’S VERSION OF ROMANCE (Spoiler: It’s Feral and Subtle)
They’re emotionally constipated and probably communicate in grunts, but when they fall? They fall hard. Their gestures are quiet, practical, but deeply telling.
╰ Acts of Silent Protection They walk on the outside of the sidewalk. They check your tires. They hand you your umbrella without a word when it rains. They love you like a bodyguard with a soft spot.
╰ “I Noticed You’re Tired, So I Took Over” Energy They won’t say, “You deserve rest.” They’ll just do the laundry, make sure you eat, and leave you alone with a hot drink and a blanket like a cryptic little caretaker.
╰ The Reluctant Vulnerability Gift “I saw this and thought you’d like it. It’s dumb.” (It’s not dumb. It’s a first-edition copy of your favorite book. And they had to talk to a bookseller. The horror.)
╰ Jealousy in Microdoses The way their jaw tightens when someone flirts with you. The “I’m fine” that clearly means I will fight for your honor, please let me.
╰ Being Soft Only for You Sunshine gets to see the grumpy one laugh, maybe cry, maybe be human for once. If they fall asleep on you mid-rant, that’s basically a marriage proposal.
SUNSHINE’S VERSION OF ROMANCE (They’re Basically a Walking Hallmark Card)
They love big, loud, and with no chill. Their gestures are joyful, sometimes chaotic, and always from the heart.
╰ Loving the Grump Out Loud Compliments like confetti. Constant check-ins. Arms flung around them in front of people, daring them to pretend they’re not affected. (They are. Deeply.)
╰ Baking When They’re Sad “Oh, you’re mad? Here, I made brownies shaped like hearts. Do you want to talk about it or just eat six?”
╰ Pet Names for DAYS Babe, sweetie, honey-bear, muffin. Even “angry cloud man.” Sunshine will name their grumpy love interest like they’re a collection of Build-A-Bears.
╰ Surprise Playlists and Stickers on Their Laptop “This song made me think of you!” / “I put a little cartoon possum sticker on your laptop because it looks like you when you’re mad!”
╰ They Bring the Spark Back Sunshine doesn’t just love. They light up the relationship, especially when the grump forgets what it’s like to feel safe or wanted. That’s not just cute. That’s healing.

Ways to show a Character is Hiding a Secret They’re Desperate to Protect
Secrets are juicy. But the best ones aren’t just plot bombs—they’re personal, shameful, dangerous because they mean something...
They flinch when a specific topic comes up. Just a little. Not enough for anyone to call it out, but enough to tell you they’re holding something back.
They avoid eye contact when someone asks a question they almost can’t dodge.
They rehearse conversations in their head, just in case “it” comes up. Always planning a version of the truth that’ll hold water without leaking too much.
They hate silence, not because they’re bored, but because it gives people time to think.
They keep a part of their past oddly vague. “Oh yeah, I lived in Boston for a bit,” they say, casually skipping over the why like it’s not loaded with dynamite.
They’re overly controlling of one specific detail. Always driving. Always cleaning. Always checking someone’s phone is face-down. Not because they’re picky—because if that one thread unravels, it all falls apart.
They sometimes seem exhausted by the lie they’re living. The weight of holding it together shows in subtle ways: headaches, bad sleep, irritability. Their body is cracking before the truth ever does.

Ways I Show a Character is Emotionally Burned Out (Before They Even Realize It Themselves)
I love writing characters who think they’re fine but are actually walking emotional house fires with bad coping mechanisms.
They stop doing the things they used to love and don’t even notice. Their guitar gathers dust. Their favorite podcast becomes background noise. Their hobbies feel like homework now.
They pick the path of least resistance every time, even when it hurts them. No, they don’t want to go to that thing. No, they don’t want to talk to that person. But whatever’s easier. That’s the motto now.
They’re tired but can’t sleep. Or they sleep but wake up more tired. Classic burnout move: lying in bed with their brain racing like a toddler on espresso.
They give other people emotional advice they refuse to take themselves. “You have to set boundaries!” they say—while ignoring 8 texts from someone they should’ve cut off three emotional breakdowns ago.
They cry at something stupidly small. Like spilling soup. Or a dog in a commercial. Or losing their pen. The soup is never just soup.
They say “I’m just tired” like it’s a personality trait now. And not like… emotionally drained to the bone but afraid to admit it out loud.
They ghost people they love, not out of malice, but because even replying feels like too much. Social battery? Absolutely obliterated. Texting back feels like filing taxes.
They stop reacting to big things. Catastrophes get a blank stare. Disasters feel like “just another Tuesday.” The well of feeling is running dry.
They avoid being alone with their own thoughts. Constant noise. TV always on. Music blasting. Because silence = reckoning, and reckoning is terrifying.
They start hoping something will force them to stop. An accident. A missed deadline. Someone else finally telling them, “You need a break.” Because asking for help? Unthinkable.

Ways I Show a Character is Deeply Lonely (Even if They’re Surrounded by People)
Loneliness isn’t always a dramatic soliloquy in the rain. It’s quieter than that. Sadder. Here’s how I like to show a character is lonely without ever using the word “lonely”
They make plans just to cancel them. The thought of being alone is scarier than the energy it’ll take to bail last-minute.
They scroll through their contacts looking for someone to talk to, but never text anyone. Because no one feels “safe” enough. Or worth the effort. Or like they’d get it.
They talk too much when someone gives them attention. Oversharing not because they trust you, but because it might be their only conversation all day.
They linger too long in shared spaces. Grocery stores, coffee shops, post offices. Anywhere that buzzes with humanity. Even if they don’t interact with a soul.
They create little rituals just to feel seen. Same café, same order, hoping the barista notices. Same bus seat. Same podcast, pretending someone’s talking tothem.
They fill their life with noise. Music, TV, background YouTube videos of people talking—anything to mute the silence they’re drowning in.
