Small fantasy worldbuilding elements you might want to think about:
A currency that isnât gold-standard/having gold be as valuable as tin
A currency that runs entirely on a perishable resource, like cocoa beans
A clock that isnât 24-hours
More or less than four seasons/seasons other than the ones we know
Fantastical weather patterns like irregular cloud formations, iridescent rain
Multiple moons/no moon
Planetary rings
A northern lights effect, but near the equator
Roads that arenât brown or grey/black, like San Juanâs blue bricks
Jewelry beyond precious gems and metals
Marriage signifiers other than wedding bands
The husband taking the wife's name / newlyweds inventing a new surname upon marriage
No concept of virginity or bastardry
More than 2 genders/no concept of gender
Monotheism, but not creationism
Gods that donât look like people
Domesticated pets that arenât re-skinned dogs and cats
Some normalized supernatural element that has nothing to do with the plot
Magical communication that isnât Fantasy Zoom
âBooksâ that arenât bound or scrolls
A nonverbal means of communicating, like sign language
A race of people who are obligate carnivores/ vegetarians/ vegans/ pescatarians (not religious, biological imperative)
Iâve done about half of these myself in one WIP or another and a little detail here or there goes a long way in reminding the audience that this isnât Kansas anymore.

Armor Whump
Insects stuck in the whumpeeâs armor which they canât get out without exposing themself to attack (bonus points if they are allergic to the bug or have a phobia of them)
Whumpee got struck in the chest which bruised their ribs and left a dent in their breastplate. The dent chafes against their tender, swollen flesh for their entire journey home. When they are finally able to take off the breastplate, their skin has been grated off.
A large creature grabbing the whumpee and forcibly ripping their armor off like a child hastily opening a present on Christmas Day.
Impaled while wearing a suit of armor, which makes the foreign object much more difficult to remove safely.
Enemy whumper welding Whumpeeâs armor shut and leaving them outside on a hot day to be cooked alive.
Getting shot in the cracks of their armor, like the knee or elbow joints
Getting put into armor that is slightly too small in the feet because theyâre needed urgently on the battlefield. By the end of the fighting, they have stress fractures in their toes.
Some gruff, battle-hardened caretaker gently removing a pacifistic, unwillingly-fighting whumpeeâs armor when theyâre too exhausted and traumatized to do it themselves.

More Overlooked Whump Details
Getting hit hard in the forehead will make your nose ache, and itâll feel soft, mushy, and tender inside where the cartilage meets the soft tissue
Whumpees wearing gloves who experience pain and numbness in their hands due to the frigid climate may withdraw their fingers into the palms of their gloves and make a fist to keep their fingers warm; which will expose their wrists and make the rest of them cold.
Getting slapped in the eye with a wet tree twig full of leaves is a thing that can happen when you run, bike, ride a horse, etc. and it will wake you up INSTANTLY if you werenât awake to begin with
Stress can cause extreme jaw clenching in the middle of the night which makes you feel like youâre gonna fucking shatter all your teeth and itâs awful and you should definitely inflict it on your characters
If your whumpeeâs thigh is sliced open or shot, it is a bad idea to put objects like phones in the pocket of the injured leg, as they will push on the wound with every move they make and open some wound closures. With how long wound healing takes and how fragile the area feels throughout, keeping their phone (or other object they always carry) in a different pocket will become the new normal even after the wound is healed.
If your character has been vomiting for a long time, their ribs and abdominal muscles will feel like theyâve been stuck in a binder past the recommended time limit for a few days after. This will make it more difficult to sit upright without back support.
For historical or fantasy settings where lightweight clothing hasnât been invented yet: Fur and lined mantles/cloaks are extremely heavy, especially if they are layered on top of even more layers of a similar extremely thick material. After an hour of wearing them, these will weigh heavily on the shoulders and cause pain in the neck, shoulders, and back. One wearing a cloak for a long time will want to lean on things and sit down.
Teeth feeling soft and breakable after throwing up. Ick.
Even if it doesnât actually break, getting hit in the nose will cause the fluids in the cartilage to crack like youâd crack your knuckles which is very concerning and it WILL make your character think their nose is broken for a hot minute.

Rare Whump Tropes
Blood-caked beards and mustaches, or generally just dirty facial hair.
Injuries to the pelvis and buttocks not caused by sexual trauma being treated seriously and not joked about (ie: getting shot in the butt or kicked in the groin). And this makes me mad because itâs such an underused and unappreciated way to hurt a character because it makes sitting impossible, and requires a lot of trust and/or humiliation to treat. But no, because they got shot in the ass instead of the gut, somehow itâs funny.
Someone getting knocked out from a blow to the head in the classic Hollywood style actually getting brain damage from it with a lengthy recovery process like they would in real life.
Tendon injuries. Not only is there deep, black bruising, there is also a hard, raised bump under the skin at the site of injury â on the tendon itself â which is extremely tender to the touch for at least a week. Injuries such as these may require the RICE treatment for a few weeks or longer, depending on how bad it is. The area aches for awhile and sometimes youâll get weird radiating pain at the site of the injury way after it was healed. (Source: I walked on stilts so much during the summer that I strained my forearm due to the way I had to hold them under my arms and also because I started pole vaulting with them like a fucking maniac which is something I definitely wasnât supposed to be doing, especially on the job, in front of impressionable children)
Ammonia poisoning. Depending on how bad it is, it can cause chemical burns to the lungs and for someone to lose all their teeth if they fiddle with them too much.
Flail chest from multiple broken â not fractured â ribs in a row.
Aftercare for a character who just went through a self-injurious meltdown
Wood splinters in wounds

10 Non-Lethal Injuries to Add Pain to Your Writing
New Part: 10 Lethal Injury Ideas
If you need a simple way to make your characters feel pain, here are some ideas:Â
1. Sprained Ankle
A common injury that can severely limit mobility. This is useful because your characters will have to experience a mild struggle and adapt their plans to their new lack of mobiliy. Perfect to add tension to a chase scene.
2. Rib Contusion
A painful bruise on the ribs can make breathing difficult, helping you sneak in those ragged wheezes during a fight scene. Could also be used for something sport-related! It's impactful enough to leave a lingering pain but not enough to hinder their overall movement.
3. Concussions
This common brain injury can lead to confusion, dizziness, and mood swings, affecting a characterâs judgment heavily. It can also cause mild amnesia.
I enjoy using concussions when you need another character to subtly take over the fight/scene, it's an easy way to switch POVs. You could also use it if you need a 'cute' recovery moment with A and B.
4. Fractured Finger
A broken finger can complicate tasks that require fine motor skills. This would be perfect for characters like artists, writers, etc. Or, a fighter who brushes it off as nothing till they try to throw a punch and are hit with pain.
5. Road Rash
Road rash is an abrasion caused by friction. Aka scraping skin. The raw, painful sting resulting from a fall can be a quick but effective way to add pain to your writing. Tip: it's great if you need a mild injury for a child.
6. Shoulder Dislocation
This injury can be excruciating and often leads to an inability to use one arm, forcing characters to confront their limitations while adding urgency to their situation. Good for torture scenes.
7. Deep Laceration
A deep laceration is a cut that requires stitches. As someone who got stitches as a kid, they really aren't that bad! A 2-3 inch wound (in length) provides just enough pain and blood to add that dramatic flair to your writing while not severely deterring your character.
This is also a great wound to look back on since it often scars. Note: the deeper and wider the cut the worse your character's condition. Don't give them a 5 inch deep gash and call that mild.
8. Burns
Whether from fire, chemicals, or hot surfaces, burns can cause intense suffering and lingering trauma. Like the previous injury, the lasting physical and emotional trauma of a burn is a great wound for characters to look back on.
If you want to explore writing burns, read here.
9. Pulled Muscle
This can create ongoing pain and restrict movement, offering a window to force your character to lean on another. Note: I personally use muscle related injuries when I want to focus more on the pain and sprains to focus on a lack of mobility.
10. Tendonitis
Inflammation of a tendon can cause chronic pain and limit a character's ability to perform tasks they usually take for granted. When exploring tendonitis make sure you research well as this can easily turn into a more severe injury.
This is a quick, brief list of ideas to provide writers inspiration. Since it is a shorter blog, I have not covered the injuries in detail. This is inspiration, not a thorough guide. Happy writing! :)

I have to rewatch the series but for now this is my faves in order of what I'll rewatch first:
LotR: Fellowship of the Ring
LotR: Two Towers
LotR: Return of the King
Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Hobbit: Battle of Five Armies
Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug
I have so many favourite scenes that stick out to me. I don't know my number one favourite, but Boromir's death from the first movie was oddly beautiful despite the emotional pain I was in.
okay, so this is a beast of a post.
since i've officially watched all 'the hobbit' movies now (as well as 'lord of the rings'), here is my personal ranking of all the movies in a list.
LoTR: Two Towers
LoTR: Return of the King
LoTR: Fellowship of the Ring
Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Hobbit: Battle of Five Armies
Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug
i talk a lot about the movies under the cut ( i accidentally started rambling, whoops ) don't feel like you have to read it all but if you want my supper cluttered opinion, go ahead (spoilers btw)
favorite one overall is clearly 'Two Towers'. it follows three groups of characters in the best fucking way. (Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas | Samwise, Frodo, Smeagol/Gollum | Merry, Pippin) it's been a while since I watched this one but i would really love to rewatch it one day. (we rented this one so we don't have it anymore)
i initially had 'Return of the King' as #4 but i honestly can't rank it that low. everything about this one is perfect and it gave me and my sis some good fucking inside jokes. also aragorn and eowyn slayed imma be real
'An Unexpected Journey' almost came above 'Fellowship of the Ring' but then i remembered the other half of fellowship and i had to rank it higher. maybe i just love the lotr characters more, i dunno, but their journey impacted me more and had me more excited. also, 'one does not simply walk into mordor.'
'An Unexpected Journey' is the only one I've actually rewatched (even if it was only the beginning) solid movie, something old and charming to it. i did watch it when i was younger but i fell asleep multiple times and just caught tid bits of it, so going through it again i annoyed the piss out of my sis by yelling 'i know that part!' over and over again
'Battle of Five Armies' was structured really well. the fight scenes could not have gone any better. the elves, the dwarves, the orcs, all their different unique styles. solid three hours of fighting if you want that. (i would gush about this a little more but i would probably end up repeating myself a bunch and sounding more a mess than typical) ((also this is going on too long))
'Desolation of Smaug' by all intents and purposes should've been ranked higher. if something has a dragon, I'm gonna watch it. (i recently realized i had a not-so-secret love/obsession for dragons) and Smaug being that gold-obsessed dragon from storybooks gave him such an interesting twist and gave me a real appreciation for that trope and he looked really cool and he was probably my favorite part of the movie- (unfortunately i just had a bad experience watching the movie because i was being constantly interrupted to the point that i completely lost track for like two hours. but even with a rewatch, i probably wouldn't rank it higher, but i would definitely have more love for it than i currently do)
Favorite Characters
LoTR: Gimli (i can finally remember his name), Frodo (pathetic bitch, like me fr), Pippin (protect this tree-loving, goofy ass, bard at all costs)
Hobbit: (no character really stuck out to me in the way lotr characters did but these ones did stand out) Balin, Gandalf, Galadriel
and special shout out to:
aragorn (king, literally), legolas (especially from lotr where he's only quiet until he says some wise shit), smaug (big, fire kitty), galadriel (yes, again, i didn't think much of her until the hobbit but lowkey what the fuck, awesome, talented amazing, showstopping, hot as fu-what?), and eowyn (pick your head up queen, your crown is slipping)
and because i can't shut up and this is such an impeccable series
i couldn't pick one, so the two most impactful scenes for me was-
lotr: when the ring had been destroyed and frodo and sam are on the rock surrounded by lava. frodo is remembering everything about the shire and home and he probably finally feels normal again. they were also giving ship vibes, true, but their dynamic in that moment is also so special and i want to rope this into the end where he gives him the book before leaving and the ethereal lighting of it all is everything and-
hobbit: i wasn't too 'wowed' by thorin (he just doesn't match up to aragorn for me) but his character direction is something i can gab about on a later date (cuz i fucking love it dude) . other than that, he didn't touch me emotionally or anything. but holy fuck when the credit mucic started playing?? the song is 'the last goodbye' and i immediately thought of his death scene and the funeral of all of who passed and let me tell you, i have never teared up for movies or songs or stories but i got fucking close during that song man and that's gotta account for something (I've watched endgame with tony stark as my favorite character if that gives you any inclination how much that credit song fucked me up)
and lastly, my favorite songs
The Last Goodbye (this fucking song made me love thorin so much more and it also stole my lunch money, yes 911? i would like to report a crime-)
Edge of Night (wasn't expecting it, thought i'd hate it -because i get uncomfortable with characters singing in movies- fucking loved it, obsessed)
Misty Mountains Cold (had no reason to go so hard, jesus christ-)
I See Fire (i knew this song since i was a kid, never knew it was from the hobbit, got really excited when i heard it at the end of of desolation of smaug)
if you read this, you deserve a reward. but I'll settle for requesting you either reblog or comment with something about lotr/hobbit that you really love. like your favorite movie, character, scene, whichever. i'd love to see all the different things that was special to others (and it doesn't need to be as long as this, please, save yourself the stress)

12 Emotional Wounds in Fiction Storys
Betraying a Loved One. Your character made a choice, and it backfired, badly. They betrayed someone close to them, maybe on purpose, maybe by accident. Now, the guiltâs eating them alive. They might try to fix things, but can they even make up for what they did?
Guilt Over a Past Mistake. They made a mistake, one that cost someone else. Maybe it was reckless, maybe it was a dumb decision, but now it haunts them. They canât stop thinking about it, and no matter how hard they try to make things right, the past keeps pulling them back.
Survivorâs Guilt. Imagine surviving something awful, an accident, a disaster, but someone else didnât make it. Now your character is stuck asking, âWhy me? Why am I still here?â They push people away, convinced they donât deserve to be happy or even alive.
Feeling Powerless. Your character is trapped, maybe in an abusive home, a toxic relationship, or just in life itself. They feel stuck, with no control over their own future.
Being Wrongly Accused. They didnât do it. But no one believes them. Your character has been falsely accused of something serious, maybe even a crime and now theyâre fighting to clear their name. Itâs not just about proving their innocence, though. Theyâre also battling the pain of being abandoned by people who were supposed to stand by them.
Public Humiliation. Theyâve just been humiliated in front of everyone, maybe itâs a video gone viral, or they were betrayed by someone they trusted. Now, they canât even look people in the eye.
Living in Someoneâs Shadow. No matter what they do, itâs never enough. Someone else, a sibling, a friend, a partner, always shines brighter. They feel stuck in that personâs shadow, invisible and overlooked.
Abandoning a Dream. They had big dreams, but somewhere along the way, life got in the way, and now theyâve given up. Maybe it was because of fear or circumstances beyond their control, but the loss of that dream has left them feeling empty.
Childhood Trauma. Something happened to them when they were young, something painful that still affects them today. Whether it was abuse, neglect, or a significant loss, the trauma follows them into adulthood, shaping how they see themselves and the world.
Being an Outsider. Theyâve never felt like they fit in, whether because of their background, their personality, or something else. They long for acceptance but fear theyâll never find it.
Struggling with Addiction. Theyâre caught in a destructive cycle, whether itâs with substances, behaviors, or even people. The shame and struggle to break free from addiction are real and raw.
Living with Chronic Illness. Theyâre living with a chronic illness or disability, and itâs not just the physical challenges that weigh them down, itâs the emotional toll, too. Maybe they feel isolated, or like theyâre a burden to others.

Prompts for AI-less Whumptober 2024
As promised, we're bringing you the official prompt list of AI-less Whumptober 2024 today!
We have 31 days of excellent whump prompts, with three prompts per day to pick from, fun themes, and 10 alt prompts to play around with. We hope you enjoy! Additional info + plain text versions of the prompts can be found under the cut.
FAQ and Rules
What sort of content can I create for this event?
You can create whatever you want (fic, art, edits, etc). Any fandom is allowed, as well as OC stuff. NSFW is allowed, but please tag your content accordingly! The only thing not allowed is AI-generated content.
Do I need to make 31 things to participate?
Oh heavens no! You can make as much or as little content as you like, skip days when desired, or combine prompts (so for example, write something that covers a prompt from day 1, 2, AND 3). You don't have to do the days in order either, go wild! To be considered a 'completionist', you only have to make sure that at the end of the month, you've covered 31 prompts from 31 different days, but whether you do that in 31 works or just 1 is up to you.
What are these alts about?
If none of the three prompts of a particular day are your cup of tea, you can swap them out for an alt prompt of your choice.
What are these themes about?
Just a little bit of extra fun for the mods. Like last year, we'll be handing out various badges for people participating in the event. A full list will be posted later (and linked here once that happens), but perhaps there will be a special badge or two for people who can't be completionists but who do manage to finish every single day of a specific theme ;)
How do I tag and is there an AO3 collection?
It suffices to tag your work with #AIlesswhumptober2024 for us to see and reblog it! Please also tag nsfw, since we'll be using that tag too. Tagging the day is optional but does help the mods along.
There will be an AO3 collection for the writers to share their works in, this will be made available once we're closer to October (and linked here once that happens).
That should be all. If you have any additional questions, check our pinned or hit us up in the ask box. Or join our discord maybe, whumping can be a great group activity!
---
Plain text versions of the prompts:

public torture/public use, stress position, âIf you cry, weâll go easy on you.â
