Don't forget to boycott Eurovision tonight. No support for them being hypocrites banning Russia for invading Ukraine but defending Israel despite its ongoing genocide of Palestinians.

first read of may — a cup of sake beneath the cherry trees by yoshida kenkō
moonlight, sake, spring blossom, idle moments, a woman's hair. 'a cup of sake beneath the cherry trees' is a collection of fragments from the journal of a 13th-century monk, as he reflects on the pleasures of life and its passing moments. i think there's something in here for everyone to admire, with its reflective themes, philosophical undertones, and beautiful writing and imagery.
i definitely recommend!! 🌱

Lets go thoughts on the books that I have read in April
read
The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty
Probably one of the best fantasy books that I have read in a while, if not my new favorite. No more thoughts.
Die Freiheit einer Frau by Édouard Louis
I got this copy of A Woman’s Battles and Transformation from a friend, it'd laid in my physical tbr for months and since I was in a reading slump I thought I could take this little boy with me on a train ride. I. Absorbed. This. Book. The story of Louis’ mother is nothing new. A young girl getting pregnant, a partner that is abusive and finally she finds the courage to leave and live her life on her own. Every once in a while there are little comments of Louis and his thoughts on his mother, how he has thought of himself better because of his education, him being afraid of what his mother will think of him being gay. There is something about French literature that can describe women on so little pages and yet every problem is said. If you have read Annie Ernaux then *A Woman’s Battles and Transformation* will definitely be something for you!
Kleider machen Leute by Gottfried Keller
Not many thoughts on this one tbh. It was a read for a class about fashion in literature. Here and there it made me laugh a little (aka breathing heavily out my nose), but in all Clothes make People is another classic that I get but has no real personality.
The Girl from the Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag
Another little “Maybe I will read it on my train ride” that surprised me. This graphic novel is absolutely cute, tackling the problem of young people facing their sexuality and therefore their identity. Do you really need to tell your friends and family around you that you are gay, when you have planned out to cut them off once you leave your small village? As it is typical with graphic novels the plot moves on pretty fast and many problems are hinted at, and I can see them. I see how a relationship is build, where the problems lay and why emotions arisen, but especially the fast pace let them read
dnf
Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
I have seen this book all over tumblr and thought I should give it a try, I mean, it still sounds promising. Yet I was sceptical once I read the first paragraph. Gideon and the writing style are definitely a choice but it isn’t anything that I like to read now. 16 years old me would have probably eat this shit up: the rebellious “I don't give a fuck” girl. But now? I couldn’t come in terms with the writing nor with Gideon, so I have decided to dnf it.
currently reading
Homer’s Illias
Let's go. One of THE classics. 60 pages in and so far no thought, just me trying to get it.

I think kafka’s diaries are the strongest evidence that journaling is not necessarily good for your mental health

i can't do an april wrap-up/monthly book recommendation post because i only finished one book in april, and it was a short story(🥴)
april was a month of travelling, of exploring, and of heartbreak (having to reject an offer from oxford because i can't afford relocating rn is going to haunt me for the rest of my life). reading, for the first time in a long time, hasn't been a priority for me, and that feels really good??
