Punctuating Dialogue

➸ “This is a sentence.”

➸ “This is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,” she said.

➸ “This,” he said, “is a sentence split by a dialogue tag.”

➸ “This is a sentence,” she said. “This is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.”

➸ “This is a sentence followed by an action.” He stood. “They are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.”

➸ She said, “Use a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.”

➸ “Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,” he said.

“Unless there is a question mark?” she asked.

“Or an exclamation point!” he answered. “The dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because it’s not truly the end of the sentence.”

➸ “Periods and commas should be inside closing quotations.”

➸ “Hey!” she shouted, “Sometimes exclamation points are inside quotations.”

However, if it’s not dialogue exclamation points can also be “outside”!

➸ “Does this apply to question marks too?” he asked.

If it’s not dialogue, can question marks be “outside”? (Yes, they can.)

➸ “This applies to dashes too. Inside quotations dashes typically express—“

“Interruption” — but there are situations dashes may be outside.

➸ “You’ll notice that exclamation marks, question marks, and dashes do not have a comma after them. Ellipses don’t have a comma after them either…” she said.

➸ “My teacher said, ‘Use single quotation marks when quoting within dialogue.’”

➸ “Use paragraph breaks to indicate a new speaker,” he said.

“The readers will know it’s someone else speaking.”

➸ “If it’s the same speaker but different paragraph, keep the closing quotation off.

“This shows it’s the same character continuing to speak.”

What's the last book you gave up on and stopped reading?

Mistborn... I liked the first half but I didn't have time to read the second half in one seating so it all got scrambled and I didn't like it anymore if that makes sense... Maybe I'll pick it up again in a few months.

You realize that a fictional relationship is toxic only when you try and put yourself in their place (aside from the really obvious ones).

Books promote unrealistic relationship ideals, the key is communication. Find out what works for you, if a particular guy or girl makes you feel insignificant, anxious or stressed, remember that's not how a relationship works.

It's important for us to know the difference between fantasy and reality. Toxic relationships do not make you look cool, they just ruin you from within.

The tall, dark and mysterious guy only gets you excited in a book. Thee controlling one, you would get really pissed if your boyfriend kept a track of all your activities when you have been dating for a month.

Be in healthy relationships people, don't hesitate to leave ur toxic partner.

What if they visited him on the farm and discovered that Kaz Rietveld is even more punchable than Kaz Brekker? What then?

Sirius' patronus is a small, slender cat. It's fussy and pretends to scratch him every so often. The cat looks like it's partway between being a kitten and a fully grown cat. Sirius will never know that his patronus has a counterpart.

Regulus will know.

Kaz loves the crows. He just does not know how to show his affection.

Kaz was traumatized as a kid, then had to raise himself in the Barrel. He had no one care about him after Jordie died. Before the crows.

Kaz never saw people showing each other genuine love, there was always a motive, always a fear of betrayal.

So Kaz learns to show he cares by watching Inej silently slip into his room after a fight. How Jesper hugs Wylan so casually, how Matthias always has a fond expression while Nina speaks.

Inej knew that Kaz was not perfect, she did not force him to change. She knew her worth and was not willing to settle for anything less.

She did not try to fix him for his love. He decided to better himself for hers.

Kaz himself decided to change, open up, to have a chance with Inej. She gave him a choice, he chose to lose his armor than losing her.
