The whole "adapt or die" thing is huge for dying. Best marketing campaign dying has had in years. Big Death really pulled through this year.

Getting into tech was a mistake. It was all a trap. I'm quitting design and webdev and applying to be an assistant on a museum, or a library, or some environmental preservation thing. I'm gonna learn to dance and buy rollerskates. I'm done hearing about AI and shit. I'm sorry I liked computers as a kid and started a nightmare domino effect. I'm setting my self freeeeee

In/at/tention
I've been here a while. Online. Chasing hyperfixations, riding the cyclone. At some point, the ecosystem changed, and I started letting some java function somewhere decide what media I experience every day. We all know how feeds erode our attention and energy, how they're optimized for engagement and don't care if it's negative, but the alternatives are... nebulous?
I think that's the issue (at least for me). The wording of social media addiction is a bit deceiving, it's not so much about dependence but routine, lack of parallel structures. I don't keep coming back to it because of an urge or abstinence, but because there's not much else to do online. It's easy to feel negative about it, here: every other website is buried in captchas, paywalls and popups, the open web lost an endless war of escalation against spam bots and SEO tricks, not to mention the pages that just get deleted for either poor server maintenance or just cost-cutting measures. Even wikipedia is begging, the internet archive is fighting lawsuits; imagine how many corners of the web are living out their next days just long enough to be absorbed into the database of some AI. Of course I keep looking at my tiktok feed, everything else is ashes! And they're feeding the ashes to robots now!
See, easy. And that's all true, but not the whole truth. Depending on who you talk to, they'll tell you about their solutions. You'll have to get past some influencers who live in big metropolises with thriving art scenes and just can't understand why you don't simply touch grass and build community in your neighborhood that looks at you a little weird if you so much as dye your hair a primary color; then you get to the folks who get it and have some real options.
Someone's got a neocities feed full of people commenting on each other's indie comics, someone eles's on a mastodon server with cyber-anarchist book clubs every tuesday night and somehow more drama than you've ever experienced your entire life, the most put-together person you know is cultivating an online garden on obsidian (and you're still not fully sure what that means). A hermit somewhere is waking up every day and reading 5 different e-zines they get through email. You're not starbucks enough for substack. Is anyone on nekoweb actually your age or are they all 13 year olds who found y2k on the aesthetic wiki?
You reactivate your tumblr. You spend some time on are.na. You make a discord server for the 5 cool souls who read your cybergrunge action comic, you try to build a viable online routine outside of the algorithm vortex and exist in peace. You make a patreon and promise yourself to write more there. You know you can't be adrift anymore, and it's time to live with some intention. And hey, why not take that direction and apply to art?
This is my intention, now. To journey away from the feed abyss and back into the human internet, and to share my findings with whoever finds them useful, making a bunch of cool glitchy stories along the way.

I wanna disengage from social media and curate a careful daily feed of art e-zines and indie comics. I want to control my online experience again. I don't want to spend the rest of my life involuntarily developing takes on whatever new hype bubble is being pushed to venture capitalists on silicon valley, I want to curate my digital garden and escape the vortex of the rage industry, I want to channel my energy into creative work instead of vampires misinterpreting media for engagement. I must escape the vortex.
I can't cultivate enrichment on my physical environment, but I used to be able to do it here. I don't know how yet, I don't know where the good stuff is anymore, I feel adrift, I must escape the vortex I must escape the vortex I must

In breaking news, a physical human being cannot occupy a physical space on the merits of abstract currency, cannot physically love on the orders of an abstract entity, and cannot physically leave the limits set by abstract borders. Should the physical human disobey, other physical humans will physically kill them in the service of the abstract. Matter lost the war to energy, thought killed the flesh and tulpas walk the earth in human suits.

a day in the
wake up with my eyes still strained. my mouth feels dry. I can feel my teeth. I brush and shower. I stumble toward my computer. I read the news. the devil has been crowned king of armyland and his cohorts are gesticulating the kinesics of the masacre. I should trim my nails. the thoughtspace is swarmed by robots arguing every side on phantom debates. I should buy more groceries. hearts are failing all over town and banking apps have been weaponized by a cyber psychopomp to send zeta-waves that make your brain bleed. a law firm is asking me why I didn't fix a typo on their website yet. they asked me yesterday. they're telling me to change the order the staff is displayed. they explain to me that alphabetically won't do, a receptionist is appearing before one of the partners. I haven't left the house in a week. the last unicorn just got hunted down by hobbyist billionaire cyborgs. I get an ad for cereal by the water poison collective. I get a snippet of a podcast on why women should burn. my desk chair is sinking by itself again. "evil" was declared word of the year every year backwards and forwards by the time magazine app AI. my hair is too frizzy. I see the most beautiful art piece my eyes have ever experienced, drawn by a 5 year old with 27 art scholarship offers. I told myself I would draw more this year. the feed auto-refreshes before I can bookmark it. I accidentally bookmark a distorted copy regurgitated by a robot. the app vows to never show me anything human again. I'm stress-eating again. I get a notification from my clock app telling me it will never end. go to sleep.
