Easter engineering... Taking inspiration from all the different flavoured hot cross buns around t the moment, we came up with our own flavours and used our great launchers to investigate how changing the number struts used to make the cross affected the buns ability to fly!! #homeeducation #tutoring #easter #engineering #sciencekids #homeed (at Boroughbridge) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwCbhx0heON/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=c7aq33wacwqi

So many schools are encouraging children to reflect on how they are feeling and I love going onto schools and seeing how teachers engage their children. ❤️ this chart at St Helens Primary in Bishop Auckland today. Who demonstrates the whole range of human emotions better than Angry birds?! (at Bishop Auckland) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvhF8hBhyDU/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=n0mvwwgmoh30

There's sping in the air so we're finding the perfect conditions for growing beans using homemade eco friendly paper plant pots, seeing how plants are pretty cool at telling which way up they've been planted and setting up a plant maze. Lemon Volcano: Do try this at home!
youtube
Possible swaps:
Half a lemon. You can try other fruits!  The extra juicy and acidic ones, like orange or pineapple, will work best but why not experiment.
Baking Soda. You can also by Bicarbonate of Soda for cleaning, but not baking powder.
Completely Optional:
An dish to do the experiment in. Keep the fizzy lava from making your table sticky, although with lemon and bicarb many surface clean up great!
Lets get started!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The LoveScience bit:
This is a wonderful reaction between the Acidic fruit juice and the Alkali baking soda. The two together cause neutralisation, which results in the release of Carbon Dioxide. The Carbon Dioxide gas causes all the little air bubbles you see which bubble over making a fantastic fizzing mess.
We all take a look at this reaction in more depth during our workshops and clubs, there is nothing better than test-tubes bubbling over at LoveScience.
Problem Solving and Extra Experimenting:
Fruit not fizzing? Make sure the juice of the fruit is making a lot of contact with the baking soda (that’s why more poking often helps). If you see no reaction at all make sure you have not used Baking Powder instead! Unfortunately these are not the same and only baking soda is an alkali capable of causing this reaction.
We encourage anyone to try this reaction with different fruits and let us know the results, the great thing about this is that it can also be an experiment in trying out different fruits when you eat the other halves, two experiments fin one!
Let us know if you gave it a go!

Catching Fish: Do try this at home!
youtube
Tumblr media
Possible swaps:
A Balloon. Some pens may have the right sort of coating to become statically charged and would be worth ago, although they won’t be as comfy to use as a balloon!
Completely Optional:
An dish to keep the fish in. This can make a good “pond” for collecting fish all in one place.
Score cards, stopwatches etc, Extras to make your game more fun.
Lets get started!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The LoveScience bit:
All objects are made up of atoms. These atoms have positive protons, negative electrons and neutral neutrons; overall atoms are neutral.
When you rub the balloon on your hair you cause the transfer or gain of electrons. Once charged up it will attract the opposite charged particle in the tissue paper fish, the protons, and be able to pick them up.
Problem Solving and Extra Experimenting:
Fish not sticking? Make sure your not accidentally discharging your balloon by touching it against something else (such as a table) before you hover over the fish! Sometimes materials other than hair can work better so it’s worth experimenting, and would you believe the build up of static electricity is even effected by the weather!
A good solo version of the game is to time the player and place obstacles to navigate the balloon around.
At our workshops we love a version of this game where everyone plays at the same time, you get 1 point for catching your own fish and -2 for someone elses!
Let us know if you gave it a go!

Jumping Frogs: Do try this at home!
youtube
Tumblr media
Possible swaps:
A hole punch. Any adult can use a sharp object such as scissors to create a hole small enough for a split pin - we recommend some blutack or playdough underneath the paper/card to protect fingers and surfaces when poking your pointy object though!
Completely Optional:
Anything to decorate your jumping mechanism. Get crafty.
Lets get started!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The LoveScience bit:
Today’s activity was all about Levers. Does using your crosses seem familiar? They’re like a pair of scissors! With a couple more scissors connected on the end. Scissors are a Double Lever - as you separate one end of the lever the other end will also open! When we connect more than one the opening motion brings all the pivot points (those are the pins in the middle of our levers) together to shrink the mechanism. The closing motion makes our mechanism grow or jump outwards!
Tumblr media
Problem Solving and Extra Experimenting:
Mechanism a bit floppy? you may need thicker card to use it in the air. It should still work great on a clear table.
If your frog is getting caught on the paper/ card stips he may need to be smaller or thicker (you could glue him onto some card rather than redrawing!) - experiment!
