Novel sneak peek!

When designing and writing the eldrich horror entities and imagery in the novel, I took a different approach to what might be expected.

In my normal life, I am a marine disease biologist. For me, octopus and squid don't fit the vibe. Their appearance maybe fits, but their personalities are not eldrich at all, they are just sweet and friendly, so it feels too flat for me to use them as inspiration even though that is a pretty well loved trope. And yeah, moray eels look spooky and all, but they literally just have the personality of a bratty house cat.

But the creatures that DO inspire simultaneous awe and amazement and a weird unsettling feeling at the same time are these guys:

1. Basket sea stars - OH MY GOD guys look at all those little creepy tendril arms! The way the cartilage of their body looks so bony but simultaneously also being twisty tendrils!

2. Sunflower sea stars - look at all those tube feet! They swallow prey whole, and secrete a toxin that can rupture red blood cells when threatened. Omg everything about them including their personality and behavior is a beautiful eldrich dream.

So yeah! This is just a small creature-feature to highlight the themes for one of the eldrich entities in the story, and also maybe get people interested in some cool animals you might have never seen otherwise :)

Writing a side character whose animal companion is a hulking alligator/tiger hybrid monstrosity with a jaw that splits open four ways, and he just talks to it and dotes on it like those horse girls in the hallmark movies talk to their horses 🤣

I wrote those scenes with silly filler dialogue in my first draft and planned on changing it, but my editor laughed her ass off over it and won't let me take it out because she said it's "unhinged in the best way, let the girlies drool over a man who is a horse girl" 😂

Writing a character who experiences limerance and basically becomes obsessed with another character to an unhealthy degree has been so enjoyable.

Just a little toxic yaoi and extreme yearning with a little eldrich horror mixed in. As a treat ✨️

I have never experienced a character in any media who has made me feel more seen than the Biologist in the Southern Reach Trilogy.

It was like someone took a piece of my soul and placed it into a book. I literally was at work, nearly in tears listening to the audiobook, when she returned as the eldrich sea beast in the 3rd book. Because I was so HAPPY for her that she became that beautiful monstrosity, that she got to become the tide pools that she loved so much and the very essence of nature.

But like, I'm also so jealous because I WOULD ALSO like to forsake my humanity and become an eldrich creature composed of the ecosystem and animals that I work with and love so dearly. But like, how do you explain that to someone without sounding absolutely CRAZY???

A beta reader of mine described Theo at the very start of the novel as "equal parts humor and relatable despair."

And I don't think I've ever heard something that describes the start of a character who is a piece of my soul more accurately, and I can't stop laughing about it.
