Hello it’s a self portrait of me from many years ago! Hi hi what would a self portrait of me now look like? We all look different all the time throughout our days. I feel like self portraits are an avenue that people use to accurately depict who they really are or provide a space to explore a side of ourselves we want but don’t fully have yet. Sometimes the first draft that you’re in LOVE with just gets stale after a few days of looking at it! That’s what happened with this piece, which was the initial stab i took at @dependableson’s album cover for “Quidnunc” (streaming everywhere currently!). Initially when i listened to Stone’s album, i closed my eyes and heard his voice - sometimes close and sometimes far away mixed in with sounds and audio wiggles muddy and bold, thin and foggy! I tried to feel what colors made sense, and saw dirty muted greens and blues with splashes of yellow and pink. Sometimes minimalism can be impressive in the certainty and confidence of the few marks they put on the table. i sometimes kinda edge on maximalism and wanted to leave space in this piece. Stone puts a lot of intention into this album and at the same time a feeling of perfect looseness and unclutteredness is there too. I tried to put all that into this piece and really liked it for a few days, maybe a week and asked stone lots of questions, probably too many questions! At one point i told him, if we weren’t dating i’d probably leave you more alone and just get it done but I want to get this right for you! In the end i looked at the album art from far away and just felt like it didn’t grab me and that there were too few exciting details for it to be an accurate representation of Quidnunc. A few days later i was doodling during a long christmas zoom call, just making scribbles and choosing colors and playing with effects brushes to busy my hands while the fam chatted, waiting to jump in when a subject arose i wanted to participate in. Listening and scribbling and thinking. When i felt done, it was better than the album cover I tried so hard to make with all my logic. So I scrapped preciousness and took the christmas gift. Sometimes you sur on your lover’s bed and draw the cups you drink water and kombucha and mud from! And then u watch twitch streams of your best friend and her lovely gf dancing and then you have a long call and talk about everything the past and the future and the ways we have grown! And sometimes u ringading dong and baby is about to watch anime with the squad and u say hehe uwu. Sometimes the flowers he gave u get old and you let them stay so long in the vase that they get mold oops! And then u give some plants to ur friend because his gf loves succulents and your mom takes photos of halloween masks to sell on etsy as the clothes dry on the rack. Good morning, afternoon, evening, and dark dream void of the night! Here’s a still life I painted in in college! I was a sculpture major so only had maybe 2-3 oil painting classes and to be honest, painting kind of annoys me! The endless mixing of colors, adding just a little more green into the red to dull it out only to get a dark grey mush because you used the wrong type of green that doesn’t stay pure when mixed. It can be looked at as incredibly monklike and focused and unrelenting. For me it sometimes just felt like a tedious obstacle to the focus of making a 2D image look like the 3D object in front of you. But then, there’s lots of tediousness and obstacles within sculpting work that i DO like steadily working through - endleslly sanding surfaces, measuring and cutting straight strips of wood, figuring out the easiest and quickest way to replicate a blimp that looks like vegetables, testing balloon rubber and foam carving ect ect. I think it’s because with sculpting i can switch around to a few strange and physical tasks and my hands are always holding strange and toy-like objects. When sculpting gets frustrating, i can grip it and hold it tightly but when painting gets frustrating all i can do is gently mix and gently let the soft brush bend against the canvas. Lol Maddie’s an Aries, did ya know!?!? In the end I think everyone has their repetitive tediousness that they can handle and that they look at as rewarding.
