In the two decades following the identification and synthesis of THC by Raphael Mechoulam PHD and Yehiel Gaoni PHD in 1964, know one really knew how it worked-what it actually did inside the brain on a molecular level to alter consciousness, stimulate appetite, dampen nausea, quell seizures and relieve pain. Sir Patrick Stewart has opened up about his struggle with arthritis and how he turns to marijuana on a daily basis to combat its symptoms according to a report from The Telegraph. Parkinson's Disease is a neurodegenerative disease of the brain. Parkinson's is a progressive disease and tends to worsen over time. In a healthy brain, brain cells produce a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine is responsible for relaying messages within the brain that control movement in the human body. Cannabis contains more than 60 different compounds referred to as cannabinoids. Our body naturally make our own cannabinoids that bind to receptors found in the body and brain, called the endocannabinoid system. When these cannabinoids bind to receptors, they can impact brain chemicals, including dopamine, which decreases in Parkinson's. One area of the brain that contains a high number of these receptors is the basal ganglia - the complex of cells that control movement and is affected by Parkinson's. Cannabinoids in marijuana work in the same ways as cannabinoids made by our own body, providing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. Researchers at Cornell University recently conducted a study on the effects of CBD oil given to elderly dogs suffering from the pain of osteoarthritis.
