astrid would be even more messed up which isn't great but also isn't horribly world breaking.

haymitch wouldnt be as spiteful because he wouldnt have made the promise to paint their posters

if merrilee died, which she would have, there would be no madge. katniss wouldnt get the mockingjay pin (though i think she would still be an icon/symbol of hope) which takes away a huge portion of the story. madge helped save katniss mentally later too, with the morphling she gave them for gale

If Maysilee would’ve died during the carriage scene instead of Louella, do you think they would’ve forced Merrilee to take her place?

lucy gray is the late past, ancient history- she holds on to the traditions of her family and her people. she never let that go, even with the games. what she did isnt very visible, you cant truly see what she did unless you dive into the full history (which somebody DESTROYED *cough* snow *cough*) she fell away to history like so many do, but she still caused much of it to occur. when a butterfly flaps its wings etcetc

haymitch is the early past, kind of like yesterday- he is still there, you can see him and understand what happened, but you dont get the full thing. over time, he's what gets blurry as you progress through the day. his affects may be visible, but they are slowly fading

katniss is the present- shes focused in the here and now. she had no time to reminisce and no time to plan for the future. it was survival and thats it for most of her life. shes the change that you see happening in real time- her effects seem so much bigger because theyre current. she embodies us all at any given time in our lives

peeta is the future- he is hope. while katniss is stuck in the present, he is able to think ahead and plan accordingly. he is the sign that things MAY change, and that they CAN. you may not see it yet, but he will influence the world. you can never figure out what will actually happen or what he'll do, you can only guess

in light of the new book - it annoys me when people talk about the victors of district 12 and talk about lucy gray (the mockingbird, the entertainer (where the other 3 tried to stop the games she actually kept them going by introducing the entertainment factor in her efforts to survive), rigged reaping) and haymitch (the jabberjay, the flintstriker, forced into the games) and katniss (the girl on fire, the mockingjay, volunteered for love) but leave out PEETA. the boy with the bread, the dandelion in the spring, the one who is genuinely reaped and had the most chance of surviving and actually DID have the odds in his favour and yet still was made to join the games. where lucy gray and haymitch and katniss were the rebellion and the rising up of the districts - peeta is the hope for the after. he is the hope for what it takes to survive. the kindness of humanity, that we do good things purely for the rightness of those acts. dont get me wrong, he is rebellion. he can be a calculating game maker in the face of the odds moreso than haymitch or katniss or lucy gray ever was in their somewhat mostly incidental large acts of rebellion. his acts of rebellion were calculated precisely, again, in view of the future. he pushed the star struck lovers act with katniss in calculation that it would push HER in favour where she could not get it herself. so that she could have sponsors and and audience that loved her and the spotlight so that she could win and survive the games. he helped her in the 74th hunger games purely because it was right and kind and the quasi-formed love for her that he could have had for just about any other district partner he could have had - whether if it was prim or whoever. (where his love was also a crush on the surface, i believe that at the start at least, it was mostly out of goodness that he wouldve had in any odds) - peeta would have been wyatt callow again, sacrificing himself immediately for a 12 year old primrose everdeen in the bloodbath of the arena. because that is just who he is. he is goodness and the hope for a future

so, dont discredit him too fast in your pool of district 12 victors.

mild idea to be considered about the whole haymitch/effie/lenore dove shipping crisis (dont know what to call it) warning for a mention of SH, its a very small one though

i think that the reason haymitch latched onto lenore dove after her death and not say his family is because she was the final straw. before she died, he knew his family was gone. he saw her as the only thing that survived, until those gumdrops. theres also the portion about him feeding her the gumdrop and not being able to save her

obviously latching onto someone you dated at 16 for 25+ years isnt exactly normal so im guessing it was a trauma response. haymitch was never able to heal after his games, not until well after the war was over. his epilogue doesnt take place very long after the war from what it looks like. after it ended, he was able to start healing.

once he starts healing, maybe lenore dove will fade into a happy memory and not somebody who technically haunts him (even though he sees it in a good way). maybe he gets to see her in his dreams, dying peacefully from old age, holding his hand. thats a much better image to hold on to than what actually happened

after he heals some, effie could totally be a possibility. they understand each other and know what they went through. they can trust each other! maybe their relationship started before that, if haymitch did it to hurt himself (definitely something that can happen) though i dont see this happening

after the war, after his epilogue, maybe haymitch quit drinking. maybe he went on to heal and was able to work through the trauma he went through. maybe he can finally put lenore dove to rest mentally, and move on (though this isnt in a bad way, his love for her will never go away. its not like when someone tells you 'move on, get over it). maybe effie was always there as a rock for him, and eventually that led to something more as they aged

thinking about the similarities between katniss and peeta to haymitchs fellow tributes, beyond just the obvious ones

(kind of long so under the cut)

louella:

the most obvious one is with katniss, literally stated in the book that he found them similar. that one isnt too hard to look at so i wont spend as much time on it

but peeta also has a large similarity i can see. louella and peeta both seem/are very gentle characters. peeta didnt hunt anybody down, didnt intentionally kill anyone. i truly dont believe that louella would have killed anyone if she had lived. she would try and survive, but i cant imagine her killing somebody. theyre both beloved and gentle people

lou lou-

less of a common one from what ive seen, but very striking. both examples come from after the games, during the war. a more obvious similarity is with peeta. louella got replaced and peeta didnt act like himself when he got back from the capitol. they present in very different ways but that quality of not being the person they were/should be is there

katniss i see more in the way lou lou acted without her snake. when katniss was in 13, she would hide and avoid people. lou lou seemed similar to me in that she was very scared. lou lou was hurt a lot, just like katniss, and they both struggled a lot in the early stages (coming to the games and going to 13), but eventually opened up

maysilee-

i see her in katniss in the initial impressions. katniss (though probably not true) saw herself as unfriendly and hard to talk to. before he got to know maysilee, haymitch thought she was rude and self centered. it wasnt until after they really talked that he understood and saw the kinder part of her- just like you could say happened with katniss

peeta is definitely there in the 'they slap back', though more verbally. maysilee LITERALLY slapped back but was also savage in her remarks. peeta was very similar in how he responded to things, though more self deprecating. you see this a lot after his hijacking, which can be the capitols fault entirely HOWEVER. peeta always had the sass. he was just a genuinely good person and wouldnt hurt people like that. after that goodness was messed up? that sassiness and general asshole remarks came out hard. i think it was a part of him the whole time, just not one we ever saw before because it just wasnt who he was

wyatt-

both peeta and katniss exhibit his traits similarly. they are both very capable people, and they know that deep down even if they dont acknowledge it. but, like wyatt, they immediately went to protecting people weaker than them. katniss protected rue, peeta helped the morphling, and wyatt protected lou lou. they could have chosen not to do this and instead focused on themselves, but they didnt. theyre all genuinely caring people who may not always seem that way but when it comes down to it if its them or someone weaker, theyll try to help the weaker person

obviously these traits can be shown in anyone, but theyre the ones that stick out the most to me. i also see lenore dove in them but not in a fleshed out enough way to detail like the others. they all are so similar that i can only imagine how much it all pained haymitch. his fellow tributes all truly came back, to help and haunt them (theyre just cool like that). i probably have more to say but cant articulate as much right now

Thinking about the discussion on Haymitch's hair in the movies vs books recently...

Both stress and alcoholism can change your hair color, though usually to white/gray

Just an interesting possible explanation that could be used! They could even say that his hair was colored blond not only for the social standards but to cover up that he was going gray so early in life

here is a fact for you: rescued baby bats are regularly given little blankets and swaddled up like itty bitty bat burritos! this is a whole Thing

Oh, and sometimes they get tiny pillows!

And they get fed out of teensy baby bottles!

They are even given mini bat pacifiers to nurse on 💕
