Watching Star Wars was a mistake. An Excerpt from my Mind

I was in my evening lit class today and was struck with the sudden urge to write. I wrote this by hand in the span of ~15 minutes. Posting it here bc I feel the need to show it to someone but have no one to at the moment.

I left my parent’s house and never stopped running. I didn’t sleep for more than four hours the first week after I left, if I remember correctly. It was all go, go, go until my head spins and my eyes feel like they’re bulging out of my skull. A moment lying down is a moment wasted. It was as if a switch had flipped.

One day, I remember, I was sitting on the bus—the unreliable, off-time bus. We hit a curb and shook. Left to right. Left to right. My body made no effort to resist the movement; I just looked on and let it happen. I noticed the yellow wire that indicates you need to get off— whatever the hell that’s called. I got off, bought my candy, and chased down the next bus back before I could even process that thin yellow wire. The second I stepped on it was just me and my thoughts again: a liminal space of my own creation.

In this space, those twenty fleeting minutes of shaking, staring at strangers I’ll never see again I was running marathons in my mind. One right after the other. Why does the student across from me have a cake. What happened to him to have such dark circles under his eyes. Poor guy.

In those twenty minutes, I am myself. In those twenty minutes, I have never been further from myself. My life is a bus rocking back and forth, stopping whenever sad, tired passerby waves me down. I hit a curb, or god forbid a red light and it’s all over. What’ll happen to that poor kid with the cake and dark circles if he’s late? If I’m late?

I go and I go and I go until I can’t anymore. That day has not happened yet, but I dread when it will. My only source of comfort is that the fall is always more frightening than the crash. But, nonetheless, it’s not the scary part that kills you, is it?

My head is spinning.
