Back in January, I was incredibly lucky to be invited back to my university to give a Professional Practice talk. I talked about my experience working in Film/TV in Costume and put together a presentation explaining the costume department from what I’ve learned so far. So here is the presentation with some speaker notes at the bottom of each page. Hopefully this will be useful for any students or anyone interested in Costume for Film and TV.

Here’s the artwork I did for Cowgirl Barbie’s neck scarf(2023). The artwork was inspired by tranditional paisley prints.

Batsuit for The Flash(2023).

You briefly get to see a collection of Batsuits in the film which I had the opportunity to breakdown and age. Not gonna lie though, I spent the first 5 mins playing with the utility belt and pressing all the buttons.

Love that they put a horse print for the doll!

Supergirl’s medical prison gown from Flash(2023). When I was briefed on how to breakdown and age this costume I was told to make it look like a rusty ship. It was an extremely long process of repetitive spraying/washing/drying to create the water marks.

I helped print Weird Barbie’s dress, it’s one of my favourite costumes from the film. The big initial shapes were screen printed and then we hand painted the splatters with silk dye.

You barely see Sugar Daddy Ken in the film but re-creating the artwork for his blazer was one of the most memorable. It’s a nice little Easter egg in the film, the Ken doll was only released for a few years in 2009 and the doll we got to study was one of the last of his kind. Artwork done by hand cut stencilling.

Art work for Barbie’s Blue Heart dress. The artwork was an inspired by beach ropes and done by hand cut stencilling. There is a rope motif that runs throughout the costumes in the film.
