Separatist Lesbrarian Post
As if my Goddess research book pile isn’t big enough.. I’ve decided to make a post of my work-in-progress separatist booklist; there’s essays, feminist sci-fi, lesbian novels, all-female societies, herstories, etc. Some I’ve read but most are TBR on the Storygraph. If any women know anything that would be a good fit, or praise or criticism of anything here, feel free to add suggestions.
Fiction:
Sultana’s Dream by Rokeya Sakhawat Hossein (only 11 pages and I love it so much)
The Wanderground: Stories of the Hill Women by Sally Miller Gearhart
Womonseed by Sunlight
Daughters of a Coral Dawn trilogy by Katherine V. Forrest
Return to Isis trilogy by Jean Stewart
Journey to Zelindar, Hadra Archives series by Diana Rivers
Ammonite by Nicola Griffith (this one made me want to go to the all female planet so much!)
The Demeter Flower by Rochelle Singer
The Gate to Women’s Country by Sheri S. Tepper
A Door Into Ocean, Elysium series by Joan Slonczewski
*Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (I read this, cw for shameless racism)
Your Faces, O My Sisters! Your Faces Filled of Light, and Houston, Houston, Do You Read?, by James Tiptree Jr. (pen name of Alice Sheldon)
When Women Were Warriors trilogy by Catherine M. Wilson (too many men in last book, some weird scenes but good otherwise, would reread)
*The Stars Are Legion by Kameron Hurley (read this, overall liked it but for the love of Goddess check reviews for content warnings bc idek how to warn for this)
The Carhullan Army/Daughters of the North by Sarah Hall (read, off-putting scenes esp gross het scene but interesting other aspects)
Banner of Souls by Liz Williams, added by suggestion! This looks interesting.
Sister Light, Sister Dark by Jane Yolen, thanks to @violetssunsets for the addition! unfortunately was warned about het content but also a society of warrior women.
Celaeno series by Jane Fletcher, thanks to @unified-multiversal-theory for the suggestion! Has an all-woman society so I need it in my life.
Herstory and Nonfiction:
Separatism and Women’s Community by Dana R. Shugar (got this recently and excited to read this herstory)
Lesbian Land by Joyce Cheney
Sinister Wisdom #98: Landykes of the South: Women’s Land Groups and Lesbian Communities in the South (have this, many listed are of the past)
La Luz Journal by Juana Maria Paz (actively seeking this one atm, racism and esp colonization issues wrt women’s spaces on occupied land are something I want to see addressed)
Country Lesbians: The Story of the Womanshare Collective by Sue Deevy, Nelly Kaufer, Dian Wagner, Carol Newhouse, and Billie Miracle. (Billie gave me a copy of this when I visited Womanshare a few years back)
Weeding at Dawn: A Lesbian Country Life by Hawk Madrone
Amazon Acres, You Beauty: Stories of Women’s Lands, Australia, edited by Sand Hall
Circles of Power: Shifting Dynamics in a Lesbian-Centered Community by La Verne Gagehabib and Barbara Summerhawk
For Lesbians Only: A Separatist Anthology, edited by Sarah Lucia Hoagland and Julia Penelope. (70 essays! I haven’t finished it but I’m trying)
Wild Mares: My Lesbian Back-to-the-Land Life by Dianna Hunter
*Herlands: Exploring the Women’s Land Movement in the United States by Keridwen N Luis (language in synopsis seems to favor male invasion of Female Sovereign Space so my expectations are low)
If any women here have read any of these please let me know your thoughts! I don’t have anon on but I’ll redact asks if you want to write in anonymously, just say the word. Hoping to find more knowledgeable lesbrarians on our beloved hellsite than myself :)

What can we collectively do as a community to improve women's lives?

poor people get treated as dumb and ignorant bc we don't always know how shit works but that's usually not ignorance or stupidity imo.
I have a haircut tomorrow. I've done it in my bathroom since I was in middle school, save for twice as birthday gifts over the past 8-12 years. I don't know what to expect, what the etiquette is, what they even do, because I genuinely didn't think to go somewhere to cut my hair for 10ish years.
when I lived in a city, I had a friend visit. she couldn't figure out the transit system, rideshares, or anything. the town we grew up in has none of that. she's a smart woman, but people got so confused when she couldn't figure it out.
this is just basic stuff, but my point is that poor people are left without what seems like basic knowledge because we just don't have the money to need to know how to use it or our communities just lack it, be it haircuts or uber. and that's small, silly stuff compared to things like credit scores or retirement funds. why and how are you supposed to know what an IRA is when you can't afford to put money into it? how do you shop for healthcare, for fair interest rates when buying a car or house, when there's never been enough money to make that even seem relevant to your life?
then so many of these companies know you don't know. yeah, 200% interest for a payday loan is normal because you've never had the ability to build credit and get a less predatory loan. you have to have car insurance in the US, and very specific, expensive insurance if you've had certain criminal convictions like a DUI, but you need to drive for work. so you pick the cheapest policy, especially if you have a record, and it covers nothing. you crash or get hit, it goes up and you're left w the fees, not the company.
we can talk about financial literacy being an issue, but we don't really talk about why. or the fact that, even if you know you're very well-educated on why this whole system is clownery all the way down, you're still stuck with lack of experience, lack of credit, and lack of options. and you get to hear middle class and rich liberals talk about how you just need more education, when that education can't be applied on the regular. so you say smth and it's just "oh, yeah, I have student loans, I get it." like no, dude, I'm talking payday loans, shitty insurance, evictions on record from not knowing your own rights because you're too busy working for $7.25 or $15 or whatever.
we don't need education so much as we need options, especially for women.

Do not let men gaslight you into thinking that the reason women live longer than men is because we are cowards, prudes, rule followers etc. The female biology is an intricate expression of the evolution's magnum opus. We outlive men because of our far better immune systems. We mould lives within our wombs and nurture love. We live longer because the world would collapse without us.

Isn't it weird that amongst all mammals, females make up a major part of the population and the males compete with each other to attract female attention. Almost all animals have long courting rituals and mating calls. Male animals tend to be colourful and decorate themselves to ensue sex appeal due to which they are hunted more than their female counterparts leading to an even lower sex ratio. It's funny that the opposite is true for humans. In today's world, the sex ratio skews towards men. It's against nature, against evolution, against our future and against us women.

How can you be a radfem and use misogynistic slurs like cunt and bitch?? "I use them in a different context", "I am reclaiming them", "I use it at men only". Yet you are still propagating the degradation that surrounds females and their genitalia. Your casual use insinuates the lack of weight, the lack of misogyny surrounding them.

Having sex with men is a biohazard, pass it on.

Misogyny is apparent in the lack of funding women-only spaces recieve from the government. What's worse is that private run shelters usually have a religious backing wherein women often experience sexual or emotional abuse. The cases of male workers taking advantage of vulnerable women haunts me.

I'm really glad I joined radfem spaces early enough. I have never once shaven and never will.

Why Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend
Women and their jewellery have a very intricate relationship. The tale of the nagging wife troubling her husband for new jewellery is as old as time. It is a reflection on a woman's vanity. Folk tales mock her ignorance of worldly ways and her frivolous obsession with being adorned. She is redundant to a mere crow that admires shiny things. However, this begs the question, is a woman's desire to collect jewellery as absurd as men paint it to be?
The world has forgotten that until very recently, women were forbidden from owning any form of capital. Be it property, money or even small inanimate objects, they belonged first to her father then her husband. The roof above her could be taken away on a whim with a clock's tick. In these trying times, jewellery emerged as a beacon of financial security for most women of the globe.
Mother of pearls, diamond earrings, gold necklaces etc. were-- although not in print-- under a woman's reign of control. They had an impressive resale value and could last several generations under proper care. More so, they could be secretly sold usually without paperwork to acquire a woman some monetary freedom. If her husband gambled all their assets away, atleast she'll have enough money to put some food on the table for her children.
Jewellery has often times saved people from calamities. Unlike land, jewellery is easier to sell. In case of an emergency, a large sum of money could be obtained without much trouble. Jewellery are an excellent heirloom. The wisdom of grandmothers is passed down to granddaughters to come, allowing them some command over their own life.
Jewellery is a form of investment just like land and shares. Its value is diminished solely due to its association with women. It is not a woman's vice but a survival tactic against the suffocating patriarchy. Jewellery is something she can have under her own name--no matter how small or how futile-- it is her sole capital, her best friend.
