Look familiar at all? Ever wonder why Tedros was so useless and bisexual? He was based on Fiyero (nothing but love for Fiyero, just general annoyance towards Tedros). Tedros is The Brainless Ever. Ever wonder why Sophie and Agatha had such gal pal roommate energy in the first book? Why they had a KISS at the end of book one??? (Before Chainani turned them into sisters which he was not planning to do until he realized he could write many more books and people would keep buying them~it’s me, I’m people, unfortunately). THEY ARE BASED ON GELPHIE. It’s the total same, the trope of “the evil one is good and the good one is evil,” it’s the love triangles, even Hort is a weird (not unlovable!) version of Boq.

Not to say the SGE franchise didn’t expand to include SO many more details and plot arcs, just that it’s very clear what the source material was.
